Thanks to our Partners, Pico Technology, and AutelWatch Full Video EpisodeMatt Fanslow continues his exploration of game theory by examining the difference between a shop's official game and its shadow game. The official game is what ownership and management say the shop values: quality work, safety, fairness, employee support, customer care, and doing things the right way.The shadow game is what the shop's systems, incentives, habits, exceptions, and unwritten rules actually reward. Those two games are not always completely opposed, and the gap between them is not necessarily created intentionally. Management may sincerely believe in the official game while remaining unaware of the behaviors being produced by compensation plans, workflow problems, favoritism, poor communication, broken equipment, or inadequate support.Matt looks at how employees can respond rationally to the system in front of them, even when those responses undermine the shop's stated purpose. That may help explain dishonest, deviant, or destructive behavior, but it does not necessarily excuse it.The goal is not to pretend the shadow game does not exist. It is to identify it, understand what is creating it, and bring it into the light so the shop's actual systems move closer to its stated values. The episode then takes a much less serious turn as Matt attempts to choose his Mount Rushmore of stand-up comedians. Richard Pryor, Lenny Bruce, Joan Rivers, and Dave Chappelle make the final cut, but not without considerable hesitation and several deserving names being left behind.Topics DiscussedThe difference between the official game and the shadow gameWhy stated values and actual incentives often conflictProduction-based compensation versus quality expectationsUnpaid inspections and the behavior they may encourageFavoritism, gravy work, and inconsistent enforcementSafety claims versus unsafe or neglected equipmentFront-of-house and back-of-house information gapsHow imperfect information allows assumptions to spreadLocally rational behavior inside a dysfunctional systemExplaining behavior without excusing itManagement's responsibility to understand the real systemEmployees' responsibility to communicate problems honestlyWhen trying to improve a workplace becomes less reasonable than leaving itGolden handcuffs and the personal cost of remaining in a misaligned organizationWhether mission statements represent actual beliefs or marketing languageMatt's Mount Rushmore of stand-up comediansQuestions Raised in the EpisodeWhat does a shop say it rewards? What does it actually reward?Do compensation and workflow systems support the quality standards discussed in meetings? Are safety problems addressed when employees report them? Are rules and opportunities applied consistently? What behaviors are employees learning from the system, regardless of what management says? How closely does the shadow game align with the official game?Who belongs on the Mount Rushmore of stand-up comedy?Matt's Comedy Mount RushmoreRichard PryorLenny BruceJoan RiversDave ChappelleOther comedians considered include George Carlin, Robin Williams, Bill Burr, Chris Rock, Eddie Murphy, Steve Martin, Steven Wright, Sam Kinison, Andrew Dice Clay, Norm Macdonald, and Bob Uecker. Thanks to our Partner, Pico TechnologyAre you chasing elusive automotive problems? Welcome back to the Video Store Podcast. It is a complete coincidence that today, on 4/20, I am taking a look at some of the best “stoner comedies” of all time. While I personally “just say no,” I like celebrating 4/20 my own way — by revisiting films that are “high”ly recommended. In Up in Smoke (1978), Cheech and Chong's first film, Pedro (Cheech Marin) picks up a hitchhiking “Man” (Tommy Chong) and the two of them spend the next 90 minutes criss-crossing both southern California and Mexico searching for increasingly strong strains of dope. Pulling material from their multiple gold and platinum comedy albums, Up in Smoke is considered to be the godfather of all stoner comedies. Half Baked (1998), co-written by and starring Dave Chappelle, is considered to be the hand-off between two generations of stoners. In the film, lifelong stoners and best friends Thurgood Jenkins (Chappelle), Scarface, and Brian devise a plan to bail their bestie Kenny out of jail after he is arrested for accidentally murdering a police officer's horse. Despite being considered a classic of the genre, Chappelle promptly and publicly disowned the film after its release due to changes Universal forcded him to make to the script. Featuring over a dozen comedians and musicians from Steven Wright and Jim Breuer to Snoop Dogg and Willie Nelson, Half Baked remains a full classic. Dazed and Confused (1993) takes place in 1976 on the last day of school in a small Texas town. This Richard Linkletter film follows dozens of students as they prepare to escape the confines of high school and enter adulthood, whether they have a plan in place or not. Similar to movies like American Graffiti and The Breakfast Club, Dazed and Confused is a coming of age story that reminds us regardless of a story's setting, some high school experiences remain timeless. Dazed and Confused is better than okay; it's “All right, all right, all right.” In The Big Lebowski (1998) we learn what happens when thugs break into a man's apartment, dunk his head into the toilet, demand money for unknown reasons, and relieve themselves on his rug — not just any run, but one that “really tied the room together, man.” The recipient of this injustice is “The Dude,” a laid-bac stoner who, with help from his bowling partners and friends Walter and Donny, discover the he — Jeffrey “The Dude” Lebowski — share a name with another, much richer business man. Convinced the “Big” Lebowski was the intended target of this break-in, the Dude is coaxed into confronting the Big Lebowski and demanding compensation for his damaged rug. Written and directed by the Coen Brothers (Raising Arizona, Fargo), before long The Dude (Jeff Bridges), Walter (John Goodman) and Donny (Steve Buscemi) have stumbled into a kidnapping for ransom plot that will leave one person missing a toe, one person dead, and a lot of people confused. A cult-classic where every scene is memorable and every line is quotable. Best watched with a White Russian in hand. The Video Store would like to apologize for the snack bar being completely depleted this week. Someone must have had the munchies. If you're like me and don't, uh, “partake,” feel free to celebrate 4/20 with me by revisiting some of the best stoner movies of all time. Thanks for reading Video Store Podcast! The disruption around the Strait of Hormuz has posed a great threat to global energy security. The crisis is once again drawing our attention to renewable energy. According to energy think tank Ember's research, solar power growth in 2025 alone could displace gas-fired electricity equal to all liquified natural gas exported through Hormuz in the same year. Are renewable energy's benefits such as price stability and domestic energy resilience becoming more relevant in a turbulent world? John Byrne, author of "Useful Art- How Activist Artists Can Change the World," and professor of Useful Art at Liverpool John Moores University's School of Art and Design, talks about: The city of Liverpool and its art community, with about 20 total galleries, and how he fits into it; where he'll be book touring the book; a key framing in the book, being in a 'neo-liberal occupation' that we live under, which has a huge impact on the culture industries and means the financialization of essentially everything; the surprising pushback there's been at conferences and other events where Useful Art is discussed, including a lot of resistance from those in the art world who may feel that their positions of power are being threatened; the complex but far too under-considered distinction between "use value" and "aesthetic value," and why it's worth considering "use value" as a legitimate part of art-making (and which can even somehow manage to incorporate some aesthetic value); how one of the things he's interested in is having a radical re-think of what aesthetics are but also what they can be; some among many Useful Art projects, including by individual artist Tania Bruguera and Indonesian collective Ruangrupa, which curated Documenta 15, and how they came to be as a group…and, in turn, what the effect of having Ruangrupa curate that Documenta, which was an adventurous choice of curation, a role that John has heard described as "the curatorial Everest." In the 2nd half of our conversation, available to Patreon supporters of The Conversation, John Byrne talks about: how ruangrupa came to be, a very different trajectory as they didn't grow up in a culture with contemporary galleries or museums (though they did go to art schools abroad), but had a goal to make a living as artists through the collective, more specifically the "lumbung," equivalent to a co-operative;  how the controversy that arose from a single figure with a swastika in the much, much broader scope of ruangrupa's curation led to calls of anti-semitism which overshadowed that Documenta from an outsider's and the press's perspective, and how John believes this distraction was used by many as a way of avoiding discussing some of the core meanings and significance of ruangrupa's contributions to the vaunted art event; the importance of "switching the aperture of the Overton Window," a term he mentions several times, which is about re-orienting your settings in terms of shared understandings of what big concepts are, like Art with a capital A, and how venturing into Useful Art doesn't in any way mean excluding being an individual artist who works solo- they can exist simultaneously; it's also that if we don't open up and expand the definition of what an artist can be and art can be and who can make it, we run the risk of surrendering Art to the neoliberal occupation; his interest, back in the day when he was a young person, in DIY culture (Rough Trade Records,  et al.) and how that's a good analog for Useful Art projects; the artist Ahmet Ögüt, a former student of John's who started The Silent University, a knowledge exchange which evolved into a significant cultural platform; Tania Bruguera's project for the Tate Modern which entailed accessing/experiencing police horses and their corralling, and how inside the institution it follows certain basic and old-school protocols, whereas she also has done several projects outside the institution/into the street/community; the concept of 1:1 Scale Art, which the critic Steven Wright appropriates from a Lewis Carol story, in which a map is produced that is so elaborate that it covers everything that exists in the 'real world' of that map, and Wright takes that perspective and applies it as the idea that artists jettison making representations of the real world, and instead affecting change in the real worlds itself (one of the cruxes of the book), which the art world hasn't been able to understand because of the condition of neoliberal capture; a former student who's working on a project in which public libraries become spaces of the Commons, open to all kinds community members including especially those on the margins (whether pensioners, immigrants, etc.); and how posting some of the entries from the Association of Arte Util in open community meetings/events has been a great starting point – another bringing someone in to introduce a skill – to get people engaged in a Useful Art project and think and live artfully.

It's New Orleans: Out to Lunch

People who try and explain the complexity of human existence sometimes talk about “the seen and unseen world.” The seen world is the world of everyday reality in which we live. The theory of the unseen world attempts to explain some events in the real world - like love, happiness, and talent - in terms of the intangible. These explanations might range from suggestions of the existence of a soul, to past lives and karma. There is, of course, no substantiated evidence of the existence of an unseen world. Unless you’re talking about the restaurant business. In a restaurant, a diner’s real-world experience of sitting down at a table, enjoying a drink and a professionally prepared and served meal, is undeniably affected by a complex web of unseen causes. The interpersonal relationships in the kitchen... Whether or not the staff have health insurance... And chains of events like the restaurant’s ability to secure a minimum order of fresh shrimp from a supplier at a decent price - the profitability of which depends on the number of customers who show up and order the shrimp special - which itself is dependent on server education and a successful social media marketing campaign. At a big and successful restaurant, these demanding complexities are handled by a range of personnel – typically as many as 20 people – employing a range of complex systems. Here in New Orleans, Elizabeth Tilton realized if smaller restaurants – which most restaurants in the United States are – had access to these same personnel and systems, they would greatly increase their chances of success. That’s why, in 2019, she founded her company, Oyster Sunday. Oyster Sunday provides restaurants with concept development, financial strategy, project management, branding, marketing, PR, human resources, operations, and much more. Their clients are scattered all across the United States, and even around the world. The comedian Steven Wright has a great line: “It’s a small world. But I wouldn’t want to paint it.” When you step into an actual small world - like a music festival or a convention - you’ll notice there’s typically a whole other reality. It ranges from functional construction – like stages or booths - to decorations. These elements create both the infrastructure and the vibe of events. And despite Steven Wright’s trepidation, somebody has to not just paint all of that, they also have to design and build it. Here in New Orleans, and across the country too, the fabrication of those worlds is the work of a company called Downtown FabWorks. The Founder and President of the company is Daniel Krall. if there are two things we know something about in New Orleans – better than probably anywhere in the country – it’s eating out, and getting out and having fun. So, perhaps it’s not surprising that two industry leading, innovative businesses in these fields are the creations of two New Orleanians. Out to Lunch was recorded live over lunch at Columns in Uptown New Orleans. You can find photos from this show by Jill Lafleur at itsneworleans.com. Are you feeling bloated, tired, or stuck with stubborn digestive issues—even though you're doing “everything right”? From probiotics to digestive enzymes, it seems like every influencer is promoting a new supplement that promises better gut health, more energy, and effortless weight loss. But here's the truth: not every supplement is helping you—and some could actually be making your symptoms worse. In this episode, I sit down with Steven Wright, founder of Healthy Gut, to unpack what's really going on with supplements like probiotics, enzymes, and paraprobiotics. We'll explore how to choose the right ones for your body, the science behind “dead” probiotics that support immune and brain health, and why sequencing your supplements could be the missing link in your healing journey. If you've ever felt confused standing in the supplement aisle or frustrated that your probiotics aren't working, this conversation is going to give you the clarity you've been craving. What You'll Learn in This Episode • Why your probiotic might be making your bloating, IBS, or fatigue worse—and how to know when to stop taking it. • The surprising truth about “dead” probiotics (paraprobiotics) and how they can actually calm your immune system and support brain health. • The difference between digestive enzymes taken with meals versus on an empty stomach—and how that timing can completely change your results. • Why sequencing your supplements matters: when to use probiotics, when to focus on enzymes, and when to let your gut rest. If you're tired of guessing what your body needs, this episode gives you a grounded, science-backed framework to make smarter supplement choices. You'll walk away understanding how to support gut health, energy, metabolism, and hormone balance—without wasting money on supplements that don't serve you. We cover everything from IBS, bloating, histamine intolerance, and brain fog to how chronic stress and inflammation influence digestion. You'll learn why fixing your gut is about timing, awareness, and the right tools—not just piling on more pills. Ready to simplify your supplement routine and finally feel better from the inside out? Listen now to uncover the truth about probiotics, enzymes, and the smarter way to heal your gut. Stop wasting time (and money) on products that don't work. In this special reverse interview episode, my friend and colleague Steven Wright from Healthy Gut interviews me about the core concepts from my upcoming book, The Biology of Trauma. Steven understands the somatic work, the parts work, the biology, the capacity, and the overwhelm from his own healing journey, making this conversation uniquely insightful. I share stories I haven't told anywhere else - including my keto diet disaster during surgery residency that became my first clue about the biology of trauma. We explore why I rewrote this book seven times, how I discovered I had all three major biochemical imbalances, and the painful decision to place my adopted son Miguel in a different home - the grief that ultimately led to my autoimmune diagnosis and this entire body of work. Key Topics & Timestamps [00:00] The Eight Drafts of the book: Dr. Aimie's journey as an author [04:12] Beyond ACEs Scores: Why we can become obsessed with our score  [08:36] Capacity is Everything: Understanding your nervous system's dynamic capacity  [13:47] The Biology Block: How Dr. Aimie discovered her own biology was sabotaging her trauma healing [21:55] The Pain Equation: When humans decide to change  [25:44] Perception vs. Reality: How we create mountains from molehills  [28:19] The Healing Timeline: Why trauma work doesn't have to be a lifelong journey [34:04] Safety First: The critical sequence for healing trauma without retraumatization [37:18] Stress vs. Trauma: The crucial distinction that changes everything [38:18] Miguel's Story: The heartbreaking adoption journey that changed Dr. Aimie Main Takeaways The Three-Legged Stool: True trauma healing requires addressing psychological, emotional, AND biological aspects simultaneously Biology Keeps You Stuck: Inflammation, oxidative stress, and biochemical imbalances create internal danger signals that perpetuate trauma responses Capacity Changes Moment to Moment: Your nervous system's capacity is dynamic and requires constant awareness, not just daily check-ins Perception Creates Your Reality: Your body responds to your perception of danger, not actual danger - making that molehill into a mountain The Right Sequence Matters: Creating safety must come before attempting to process trauma, or symptoms worsen Fast Healing is Possible: When addressing all three domains properly, healing happens faster than medication with only positive "side effects" Notable Quotes "If something makes you sick, that is not stress. Let's call it for what it is. That is your body having gone into a trauma response." "Our capacity is not being measured up against our reality, it's being measured up against our perceptions." "The pain of staying the same has to become so bad that we're willing to undergo the pain of change." "If their body had already felt safe, it would have already opened up all of this stuff and let all of these emotions and trauma go. It hasn't felt safe." Episode Takeaway Trauma healing doesn't have to be a lifelong journey. By understanding that trauma lives in your biology - not just your mind - and following the proper sequence of safety, support, then expansion, you can heal faster than traditional approaches suggest. The key is addressing all three aspects: psychological, emotional, and biological, rather than focusing on just one. Former leaders of Bonneville Power say federal staffing cuts threaten stability and safety of NW power grid

The Bonneville Power Administration is among the federal agencies currently being gutted by Elon Musk at Pres. Donald Trump’s direction. The ostensible reason for federal government layoffs and buyouts is to save taxpayer dollars. In the case of the BPA, it’s funded by its ratepayers, not taxpayers, but that hasn’t stopped the departure of hundreds of the agency’s skilled and specialized workers. And additional staffers who were considered probationary were let go without notice last week. And that has industry watchers, including two former heads of the BPA, sounding the alarm about the potential catastrophic impacts on the power grid and the people who rely on it. Steven Wright and Randy Hardy wrote a joint article in an industry newsletter Friday detailing those possible threats. The BPA can be thought of as the backbone of the Northwest power grid. It sells wholesale electricity to the utilities, companies and other entities that sell power to residents all over the region. Sources include hydropower from Columbia River dams and the region’s only operating nuclear power plant. It also transmits energy through 15,000 miles of high voltage lines. The thousands of BPA employees perform tasks from engineering and line work to complex demand modeling and resource planning. That planning includes decisions around sources of power and how to prioritize and price the power. Energy consultant and former BPA administrator Randy Hardy joins us to discuss the details and possible impacts of the Elon Musk-led reductions on the Northwest

Imagine if hundreds of tiny particles you can't even see were making their way deep into your body's tissues—affecting everything from your hormones to your weight, mood, gut health, brain, and more.  Every. Single. Day.  This isn't some weird sci-fi movie plot.  It's the reality we're living with microplastics. Which is why I'm SO excited to welcome Dr. Vincent Pedre to my podcast this week! Dr. Pedre, an integrative gut health expert, author, and my go-to resource for all things microbiome, is here to bring you up to speed on the hidden threat of microplastics on your well-being.  From that “harmless” coffee lid to the convenient food containers you use every day, microplastics are everywhere. And they're hijacking your gut and wreaking havoc on your hormones, weight, mood, and brain.   But don't worry—we've got your back.  You're about to hear ALL the latest science, solutions, and practical steps you can take to reduce your exposure and restore your gut NOW. So if you're ready to get ahead of the game when it comes to protecting yourself and your family from this invisible invader… Tune in now for this life-changing conversation! IN THIS EPISODE The everyday sources of microplastics—like coffee cups and takeout containers—that may be affecting your health How microplastics act as endocrine disruptors and mimic estrogen, throwing hormones out of balance The surprising role of microplastics in gut health issues like dysbiosis and leaky gut Why microplastics may be a hidden cause behind weight gain and metabolic issues Real-life tips from Dr. Pedre to reduce your exposure to microplastics every day How making a few key changes in your routine can make a huge difference for your hormone and gut health QUOTES "Microplastics are the rising hidden danger that is a threat to our health, to our metabolism, to our hormones, that is right under our noses...and they are being consumed without people realizing it." "Every time you drink a hot beverage through a plastic lid, you're absorbing microplastics that can act like estrogen in the body—scrambling your hormones and disrupting everything from weight to mood." "Microplastics break down the gut's mucus layer, overgrow harmful bacteria, and eventually lead to leaky gut. Once you have leaky gut, the pathway to inflammation is wide open." "We're exposed to microplastics everywhere. So the best line of defense is to be really mindful—use glass, use stainless steel, and avoid heating food or drinks in plastic." "Even our coffee makers can be a source of microplastic exposure. If your coffee maker has plastic tubing or a plastic reservoir, hot water is leaching microplastics into your coffee every day."
