Uncharted Space

Our Season 1 ends with a blast from the past, in the form of the 2014 time travel flick, X-Men: Days of Future Past. We'll take a deepish dive into the world of comic book movies, while dancing around the implied question: "is Josh having never read a single comic book an even greater geek-cred scarlet letter than Craig having never watched Deep Space Nine?"

On the penultimate episode of Season One we're talking about The Orville, Seth McFarlane's actually-really-good Star Trek pastiche/vanity project that has been compared favorably with contemporary Trek (mostly in good faith, but sometimes not so much). On the way, we'll pay tribute to some of the other great sci-fi parodies that walked so The Orville could fly at "quantum speed" (which is totally not warp speed, Paramount).

This week, a conversation about the beloved late-90s Japanese space western Cowboy Bebop exposes just how completely unqualified our distinguished hosts are to talk about anime. Fortunately, that's never stopped them before, and it's not going to stop them now. Enjoy!

 On today's episode, we stand resolute against Nerd Rage to take a balanced look at an ambitious show that got plenty of things right, plenty more wrong, and ultimately may not have been written for crusty old Trek fans like us in the first place. Later we'll ask the question: If Star Trek: Picard gave Jean Luc a chance to process his trauma, surely we also deserve a Star Trek: O'Brien?

This week it's Fallout--a show about a fictional apocalypse, brought to you by the company that will probably bring about the real one. We sing the praises of the great Walton Goggins, Craig makes a surprisingly coherent comparison to the film Amadeus, and Josh reveals himself to know only slightly more about video games than he does about comics. 

On today's episode, Craig stands in for all the 80s and 90s kids who loved TNG but never got into DS9, while Josh makes the case that it's never too late to start watching the BEST STAR TREK SERIES EVER (FIGHT ME). Later, we compare Trills favorably to both the Goa'uld and to John Malkovich's head portal.  It's a very special episode (but not a "Very Special Episode"--like, nobody dies, it's just good) of Uncharted Space

This week we're testing the limits of what we can call sci-fi with the 1986 Connery classic, Highlander, but apparently a sequel retcons that the Highlanders are aliens (?) so we're probably good. Also, this movie *probably* isn't a prequel to The Rock, but we still spend a significant chunk of the episode talking about it

This week we talk about the great 1990 Verhoeven/Schwarzenegger film Total Recall, plus another bombshell revelation about Craig's Trek-nerd bona fides (or lack thereof?)

Craig can't risk a subversive, crude, anti-superhero story, which means the 2009 U.K. sci-fi dramedy series Misfits is right up his alley. Josh does his best to go off on every tangent possible, but to no avail; the appeal of Misfits is undeniable.

On today's episode we're talking about Dark Matter, yet another Syfy show that was cancelled on a tantalizing cliffhanger. Seriously, why do they keep doing that?!

This week, Matthew McConaughey teams up with Batman and the 300 guy to defend Apocalypseburg from a bunch of wanna-be Smaugs. It's the critically-panned-but-beloved-by-many (podcast hosts named Craig), 2002 dragon flick Reign of Fire!

This week we talk about the Ronald D. More joint For All Mankind, and envision a world in which two of the world's biggest corporate rivals join forces to turn a batshit fan theory into reality.

This week our hosts officially give up all pretense of not having swears on the pod, and Josh gives up all pretense of knowing literally anything about comic books. 

The fellas get sucked back into Charted Space for this week's ep with the shocking revelation that Craig has never watched Star Trek: Voyager.

Today we're talking about Freejack, the 1992 time-travel-body-snatching dystopia, set in the futuristic hellscape of the year 2009; a film whose predictions about the future of the United States included FaceTime and a shotgun-wielding nun (so basically they were two for two).

Today we're talking about the TV series The Expanse, based on a series of novels whose similarity to Game of Thrones is probably just a coincidence. We'll also ask the question: did Jeff Bezos not know the show was anti-capitalist, or was he just too rich to care?

This week it's Brazil, Terry Gilliam's dystopian comedy from 1985. We also delve into Josh's sordid past in public school music education, have a totally unpretentious discussion of Franz Kafka, and Craig talks about Michael Stipe more than he should, but not nearly as much as he wants to.

It's Muppets in Space! But not the one you're thinking of. This week, we talks about Farscape, the bizarre (and immensely entertaining) Henson-produced show from the late 90s. Later, Josh goes to nerd therapy, and we spoil the passing of major celebrity for the listeners who have spent the last 8 years in Rura Penthe.
