Rick welcomes Quincy Scott Jones to the podcast to talk about Blade. We get into the comic books, Blade kicking off Marvel in cinema, Wesley Snipes, Stephen Dorff, N'bushe Wright, Kris Kristofferson, super hero landings & how blood raves were fairly common during the 90s. We also go off on tangents about how W Kamau Bell is a great hugger, generation X having too much reverence for Harrison Ford, Rick's assumption that every actress that drops off the radar is because of Harvey Weinstein, how Rick wouldn't let people rent specific movies if they couldn't say the title correctly, tease a potential future episode & more! Denzel Washington's rise to cultural dominance can be traced through three defining performances that showcase his evolution as both actor and box-office draw. In Glory (1989), directed by Edward Zwick, Washington's portrayal of Trip earned him the Academy Award for Best Supporting Actor and introduced him as a performer of raw intensity and emotional gravity. The film grossed over $26 million domestically on a modest budget and became a prestige historical staple. Just one year later, in Spike Lee's Mo' Better Blues (1990), Washington headlined opposite Wesley Snipes, anchoring a jazz drama aimed at adult urban audiences; while its box office was modest, it reinforced his leading-man charisma within Black cinema. By the time John Q (2002) arrived, Washington was a certified star. The film opened at number one and grossed over $100 million worldwide, tapping into working-class anxieties around healthcare. Across genres—historical epic, auteur drama, populist thriller—Washington proved bankable, award-winning, and culturally resonant, cementing his legacy as one of Hollywood's most durable and influential leading men.Disclaimer: The following may contain offensive language, adult humor, and/or content that some viewers may find offensive – The views and opinions expressed by any one speaker does not explicitly or necessarily reflect or represent those of Mark Radulich or W2M Network.Mark Radulich and his wacky podcast on all the things:https://linktr.ee/markkind76alsohttps://www.teepublic.com/user/radulich-in-broadcasting-networkFB Messenger: Mark Radulich LCSWTiktok: @markradulichtwitter: @MarkRadulichInstagram: markkind76RIBN Album Playlist: https://suno.com/playlist/91d704c9-d1ea-45a0-9ffe-5069497bad59

Jane, the 1997 military drama directed by Ridley Scott and starring Demi Moore and Viggo Mortenson. It's the late 1980's, the crack cocaine epidemic has hit New York City, and one rising drug kingpin is taking over the market - his hame is Nine Brown and he's played Wesley Snipes in what would be his breakout performance. On his trail and trying to stop him is NYPD Detective Scotty Appleton played by Ice-T in what would be his first major on-screen perfomance. And what results is a violent war to win the city in this heightened crime drama directed by Mario Van Peebles (Posse, Panther) who also co-stars among a stacked cast including Allen Payne, Judd Nelson, Bill Nunn, Vanessa Williams, Bill Cobb, and Chris Rock in an unforgettable performance as Pookie, a recovering crack addict who Scotty takes under his wing. This film was a suprise box office hit upon release also featuring a very popular soundtrack with songs by Color Me Badd, Queen Latifah, Levert, and Keith Sweat among several others. Last February, having just inherited the title of Black Lens programmer at Milwaukee Film, Ty Williams absolutely nailed his selections for a series showing off the range of Black stories that have come to the big screen over the years. Now, he's putting that UW-Milwaukee film degree to good use once again. This time, however, he pulled in his picks around a particular theme. “Afrofuturism: Fates Beyond Fiction” includes six works — two short films and four full-length features — that jump from comic books to sci-fi horror to just plain weird. As you'll hear Williams explain in this episode, what unifies his selections are how they “focus on the concept of dreaming a better future or a different world than the one we live in now.” That comes across in a bunch of different ways during the series, including the bad-assery of Wesley Snipes in Blade, the code-switching absurdity of Sorry to Bother You, and the messianic star turn by music legend and generally far-out dude Sun Ra in Space Is the Place. You'll get to hear Williams and our trusty co-hosts talk about how he put together the full lineup, as well as how generally awesome the theater staff are at the Oriental and Downer theaters, and whether the third movie in a trilogy is ever the best one.#####Cinebuds is sponsored by Joe Wilde Garage Door Company.

Jamelle and John are back for the new year with an episode on the 1997 thriller Murder at 1600, directed by Dwight Little and starring Wesley Snipes, Diane Lane, Alan Alda and Dennis Miller. It is yet another entry into the mini-boomlet of films whose premise, essentially, is what if the president were horny…and murderous. In their conversation, Jamelle and John discuss the relationship between the media and Americans' conception of power, and how this even influences decision makers at the very top. They also discuss the difference between conspiracies in the public mind and conspiracies in reality.A reminder that they also have a Patreon where they cover the films as of the Cold War as well as produce a weekly politics show. You can find that at patreon.com/unclearpod.
This week, we review Demolition Man (1993), Marco Brambilla's explosive blend of sci-fi action and satirical social commentary. Sylvester Stallone stars as John Spartan, a no-nonsense cop thawed out of cryo-prison to hunt down Wesley Snipes' chaotic super-criminal, Simon Phoenix, in a future where violence—and toilet paper—have both been outlawed. With its dystopian Los Angeles turned pacified utopia, the film hilariously critiques political correctness, surveillance culture, and the cost of enforced peace. Is the future a sanitized paradise or a freedomless nightmare? Originally Arnold Schwarzenegger and Sylvester Stallone were in mind to play the lead roles. When John Woo was brought in to direct, he decided that John Travolta and Nicolas Cage would be more suited to the roles. Other pairs that the studio wanted was Michael Douglas (who was the executive producer for this movie) and Harrison Ford, Bruce Willis and Alec Baldwin, Jean-Claude Van Damme and Steven Seagal, Denzel Washington and Wesley Snipes, and Robert De Niro and Al Pacino.Face/Off (1997)"To foil a terrorist plot, an FBI agent assumes the identity of the criminal who murdered his son via facial transplant surgery, but the crook wakes up prematurely and vows revenge." (Synopsis via IMDB)
Bleek Gilliam (Denzel Washington) is a hot-shot young trumpet player leading his own jazz quintet who loves the music and has a way with the ladies but can't figure out how to reconcile those two things. He's also dating two women (Joie Lee, Cynda Williams) at the same time and can't commit to either of them. He has also a manager (Spike Lee) who's a gambling addict and a saxophonist band-mate (Wesley Snipes) who has developed a rivalry with him. So where does he go from here? In this sprawling romantic musical drama, we follow his complicated story and hear a lot of great music along the way! This was Oscar-Winner director Spike Lee's immediate follow-up to Do the Right Thing and even though it was a pretty unconventional choice to come right after such a seminal film, its reputation has only grown over the past thirty-five years thanks to several sterling peformances from its leads along with a stacked supporting cast including Giancarlo Esposito, Bill Nunn, John Turturro, NIcholas Turturro, Ruben Blades, Samuel L. Jackson, and the late, great Robin Harris in his last live action on-screen role. Mark and Professor Mike Dillon discuss the 1993 sci-fi action film Demolition Man. It's the most wonderful time of the year! Denzember 2 kicks off with a conversation about Spike Lee and Denzel Washington's first collaboration, 1990's Mo' Better Blues, a film about jazz, art-making, and the pursuit of greatness at the expense of personal relationships. The terrific Minnie Zondi is our guest! We discuss the film's tepid reception upon release, and how a (predominantly white) critical audience failed to understand the political dimensions of a film about Black music and its commercial and social appropriation. Then, we reflect on Spike Lee's career and his brilliant cohort of collaborators, including composer Terence Blanchard (making his first appearance on a Spike Lee soundtrack), cinematographer Ernest R. Dickerson, and the electric stylings of costume designer Ruth E. Carter. Finally, we reflect on the movie's complicated ending, and what we're to make of its reflections on artistry, family, and whether exceptional talents can hold the two in balance. Revisit the 1993 sci-fi action classic Demolition Man and discover that it's way better (and funnier) than you remembered. This movie has surprisingly strong world-building, with bold satire baked into its future society. We noticed how Sylvester Stallone, Wesley Snipes, and Sandra Bullock all leaned into cartoonish, larger-than-life versions of themselves. What could've been a generic action movie turned into a smart, absurd, and highly rewatchable time capsule that somehow feels even more relevant today.Stick around after the conversation for a round of trivia!Simon says 'Safe travels, nomads.'

Assistant Coach Trevor Hogg returned to the bench, along with Benchbro Tommy Wortz for this Snyder-hosted game. Both teams took ABBA-themed names for no apparent reason. Tommy asked if "Saturn Nuts" means what we all think, and Scott decided that Bae-Blade had to be the nickname of Wesley Snipes' wife. Local connections between Trevor and Tommy were revealed, leading David to ask "What's a Wilmer?" Snyder's second quarter again saps the teams, as Trevor remarks "Mamma Mia - I'm all out of brain power". A new halftime style with audio clips leads to more Luks overthinking...or does it? And off the bat, he goes hard after every rival gang and starts to see success.....only there's crew of NYPD cops who are after him lead by Roy Bishop (Victor Argo) and they're getting close. Tara Erickson & Aaron Alexander react to Blade: Trinity (2004), the explosive horror-action comic book sequel directed by David S. Goyer (Batman Begins, The Dark Knight). The film marks the third chapter in Marvel's original vampire-slayer trilogy, led by Wesley Snipes (Demolition Man, New Jack City) as the half-human, half-vampire hunter Blade, battling to rid the world of bloodsuckers once and for all. This time, Blade faces his most dangerous enemy yet — the resurrected Dracula, known here as Drake, played by Dominic Purcell (Prison Break, Legends of Tomorrow). He's not alone in the fight: joining him are Ryan Reynolds (Deadpool, Free Guy) as the wisecracking Hannibal King and Jessica Biel (The Illusionist, 7th Heaven) as the fierce and tech-savvy Abigail Whistler, daughter of Blade's longtime mentor. The film also stars Kris Kristofferson (A Star Is Born, Payback) reprising his role as Whistler, Parker Posey (Superman Returns, Dazed and Confused) as the stylish and scheming Danica Talos, and Patton Oswalt (Ratatouille, Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.) in a supporting turn as Hedges, a weapons expert for the Nightstalkers team. Iconic and highly searched moments include the opening vampire raid, Ryan Reynolds' hilarious one-liners, Blade's showdown with Dracula, and the UV light final battle, all set to a pounding early-2000s soundtrack. Blending gothic horror, comic-book spectacle, and razor-sharp martial arts, Blade: Trinity brings the trilogy to a fiery close and showcases Snipes' final turn as the Daywalker. Directed by Academy Award winner Guillermo del Toro (The Shape of Water, Pan's Labyrinth), Blade II (2002) takes Marvel's Daywalker saga to new, blood-soaked heights. Wesley Snipes (Demolition Man, White Men Can't Jump) returns as Blade, the half-human, half-vampire warrior sworn to rid the world of the undead. This time, Blade must form an uneasy alliance with the Bloodpack — a lethal team of vampires led by Nyssa Damaskinos (Leonor Varela – Cleopatra, Arrested Development) and Asad (Danny John-Jules – Red Dwarf, Maid Marian and Her Merry Men) — to stop a terrifying new breed of predator: the Reapers. With their grotesque split jaws and insatiable thirst, the Reapers threaten both humans and vampires alike. Memorable moments include the explosive nightclub fight, Blade's intense sword battles, and the shocking reveal of Nomak (Luke Goss – Hellboy II: The Golden Army, Death Race 2) as the first of the Reapers and Nyssa's brother. Also starring Kris Kristofferson (A Star Is Born, Lone Star) as Whistler, Norman Reedus (The Walking Dead, The Boondock Saints) as Scud, and Ron Perlman (Hellboy, Sons of Anarchy) as Reinhardt, Blade II is a gothic action-horror classic filled with del Toro's signature visuals, martial arts spectacle, and bloody mayhem. Seanan is back in MO and we're back with a new episode talking about one of the OG Marvel films before the MCU made a trillion dollars - Blade, starring Wesley Snipes! Something something ice skating uphill!
No it's not the sequel to the 1998 hit Blade where they add another Wesley Snipes; it's the golf course lawnmower parody of Jaws. Brought into homes by Troma, of course, and inflicted upon this show by Bigfoot Ben. Brian and Steve suffer through this no-Pro, only Am joke that should've been a 3 minute fake trailer instead of full length film over 90 minutes. Plus our November Showdown topic announced!
