Welcome to Dev Game Club, where this week we enjoy a bonus conversation capping our series on Portal. We talk Portal 2, the tension between story and gameplay, its length, and yes, even some co-op. And we do it all live on Twitch. Dev Game Club looks at classic video games and plays through them over several episodes, providing commentary. Sections played: Much of SP, all of Co-op Issues covered: recording on video, our history with Portal 2, being surprised that Portal 2 was a thing, the Valve employee handbook release, wanting a different sequel, a long campaign with many puzzles and mechanics, following up a perfect game, not cashing in, adding mechanics and the puzzles that teach you, character development and delivering more lore perfectly, a miracle, the progression of the Cave Johnson story, worldbuilding conflicting with gameplay, breaking out with Wheatley, cognitive dissonance, seeing all the behind the scenes, being re-tested, potato GladOS, the magic of how narrative connects, the chicken and the egg, a successful length for the format, a whole Portal inside the penultimate chapter, embedding lore successfully, back-propagating story, sympathy for the devil (i.e. GladOS), 2 + 2 = 4, being drawn to the financially productive projects, killer app for VR, the loss of single player, VR problems for consumers, adding portals to their hero-based MOBA shooter, lack of narrative progression in the co-op campaign, co-op for the sake of co-op?, helping the player vs not helping the player, not aligning well for a controller, more portals plus more mechanics become untenable, doing the impossible alongside the possible, potential solutions for portal confusion, playtesting and confidence in your solutions, specific buttons, the doorway effect, shape language, police procedure vs police procedural, inspecting tires, bread and butter TV format, empty JRPG chests and meaningless clues, the salience problem, getting the reward as if you had the skills. Marco... ¡Polo! This week, we’ll hear from Dan and Sam Mathews, full-time content creators who’ve built a life rooted in creativity, family, and a passion for adventure. From backcountry camping and RV renovations to raising their kids on the road, they’ve shared their journey online—offering an honest look at the challenges and joys of living boldly and encouraging others to step outside their comfort zones and choose a more adventurous route. Later in the episode, we’ll hear from Jacob Robinson, founder of Dig World, a construction theme park where kids and adults can operate real equipment. Behind the fun lies a deeply personal story. After a life-changing medical crisis with their son Pierce, Jacob’s world shifted, pushing him to navigate grief, hope, and a new way forward. Today, Dig World isn’t just a park—it’s a place where families connect, challenges are embraced, and joy is celebrated in its purest form. As long as it’s in line with the Lord’s will and we have a peace about it, we just look through the door and go, ‘Which one’s more adventurous?’” - Dan Mathews “The more you have, it can become a distraction in a way that keeps you from fully experiencing what God has.” - Dan Mathews “Chasing a new job title or a bigger house or nicer car or more zeros in your bank account—at the end of the day, it just leaves you unfulfilled. Having time to do what we love, to share Jesus with people, to love on one another, to spend time with our kids, to go and see new places, that became our idea of success. If we don’t have the time to do what we love and to spend time with each other, then all other measures of success don’t matter.” - Dan Mathews “Adventure isn’t one-size-fits-all. Adventure can just be getting outside of your comfort zone and trying something new.” - Dan Mathews “God doesn’t want us to live a stagnant life. If you look through the stories in the Bible, you can’t find anywhere God is like, ‘Hey, just stay where you’re at. Don’t change a thing. Long-term, we just want you to hunker down and be comfortable.’ He’s always calling people. He’s telling people to go.” - Dan Mathews “Jesus welcomes us through tough questions. He says, ‘I see you, I understand you, my heart is breaking with you and I love you. And there is a bigger plan.’” - Jacob Robinson “[My son] Pierce is now profoundly deaf in both ears. He’s nonverbal, he’s epileptic, and he’s in a wheelchair. But he is the happiest little dude you’ll ever meet. He radiates joy. He sees life the way that I think Jesus wants us to see life. He doesn’t see your skin color. He doesn’t see how much money you make. He doesn’t see what car you drive or what your house looks like. He truly just wants to be with you, and I think that’s how Jesus would want us to live.” - Jacob Robinson “Don’t try to figure out your faith until you have a life experience that turns you upside down. Figure out what your faith is and lean into that faith when those times come, because Jesus promises us that challenges will come. Lean into that, and lean into Him.” - Jacob Robinson ________________________ Enjoy watching these additional videos from Jesus Calling YouTube channel! The decisions you sidestep often carry the heaviest consequences. Embracing a “NO” can lead uncovering your greatest victories. Taking small, bold actions consistently over time equips you for the more significant leaps ahead. Your mindset around confidence, setbacks, and daily activities can determine whether your business succeeds or fails. It's high time to stop shying away from the information that enriches your decision-making process. Those cozy chairs may remain unnoticed until you actively seek them out. This conversation is about the importance of reaching out to the right people about your strategic ideas, as this can often be a limiting factor. Furthermore, you'll learn that developing your own decision-making framework is crucial for engaging with your growth strategy. It's all about taking consistent actions that enable your company to push forward, refine which ideas to explore, and then experiment with them. In this UNCHARTED episode, Jess Dewell speaks with Rosco Graves Jr., Managing Director at Polaxis. They discuss the vital balance of optimism and realism necessary to confront the discomfort that comes with scaling, and what makes it BOLD to step away from the temptation of easy wins. —----------------- If you want to identify business bottlenecks, the necessary skills, the initial actions to take, the expected milestones, and the priorities for achieving growth, try the "Growth Framework Reset" approach. This will help you keep learning and growing while working strategically on your business. -------------------- You can get in touch with Jess Dewell on Twitter, LinkedIn or Red Direction website.

Warmest of Welcomes everybody. This month on the Mooglecast we are joined by Will (Sqweezy) from Australia for a bunch of random topics including some of our favourite voice actors/actresses, what games we'd apply the nemesis system to if the patent ended and what special items we'd like to see included in a collectors edition for a game. The usual run of the show includes 'plat shout outs', 'the record' and as usual a meaty 'what we have been playing', where Max finally gives his thoughts on his first playthrough of his first Uncharted game (Drakes Fortune), and how keeping his teenage arms folded prevented him from entering this series for so long. Will as Norman Reedus with a Fetus slowly walks towards the Death Stranding platinum and Zac inches ever so slightly towards the finish line in Trackmania. We hope you enjoy Octobers episode of the Mooglecast, we'll be back in November alongside Theportlandkevin for a Bioshock retrospective, but until then, be excellent to eachother.

One Battle After Another, is what I should rename this podcast, because the movie was that good, and a full review is inside. Plus Xbox takes another self imposed L, Sony gives itself a gold medal, and EA goes private. The Simpsons are headed back to the big screen, and an AI "actress" has Hollywood in a fervor. Plus Forza Horizon is finally headed to the land of the Rising Sun, and Ubisoft gives Assassin's Creed a new home.

Conspiracy, mutiny and liberation on America's waterfront by the award-winning author of The Slave Ship. Freedom Ship: The Uncharted History of Escaping Slavery by Sea (Penguin Group, 2025) is a gripping history of stowaway slaves and the vessels that carried them to liberty. Up to 100,000 fugitives successfully fled the horrors of bondage in the American South. Many were ushered clandestinely northwards from safe house to safe house: know as the Underground Railway. Thousands of others escaped not by land, but by sea. Their dramatic tales of whispered conspiracy and billowing sails make Freedom Ship essential and enthralling reading.Through the intricate riverways of the Carolinas to the banks of the Chesapeake Bay, Freedom Ship traces the freedom seekers who turned their sights to the sea. Sailaways regularly arrived in Britain on cotton ships from New York or Southern ports. For example, Moses Roper, one of the most determined runaways in American history, traveled 350 miles through slave country before eventually taking a ship named the Napoleon to Liverpool. Both legendary abolitionists Frederick Douglass and Harriet Tubman used the waterfront as a path to freedom. Marcus Rediker is Distinguished Professor of Atlantic History at the University of Pittsburgh. His “histories from below,” including The Slave Ship: A Human History, have won numerous awards, including the George Washington Book Prize, and have been translated into seventeen languages worldwide. He has produced a film, Ghosts of Amistad, with director Tony Buba, and written a play, “The Return of Benjamin Lay,” with playwright Naomi Wallace. He is currently writing a book about escaping slavery by sea in antebellum America. Morteza Hajizadeh is a Ph.D. graduate in English from the University of Auckland in New Zealand. His research interests are Cultural Studies; Critical Theory; Environmental History; Medieval (Intellectual) History; Gothic Studies; 18th and 19th Century British Literature. TCW Podcast Episode 242- Fumito Ueda Fumito Ueda entered game design through art rather than a love of traditional play. Influenced by titles like Flashback and Another World, he sought to tell stories with minimal interfaces and expansive environments rich in mood. After early work on D and Enemy Zero, Sony gave him a trial period that led to ICO, a game shaped by surreal landscapes inspired by Giorgio de Chirico and a hand-holding mechanic to convey emotional connection. ICO struggled in Japan but became a critical hit abroad, influencing games from Uncharted 3, The Last of Us, Dark Souls, and Journey. Ueda expanded his ideas in Shadow of the Colossus, a meditation on cruelty and consequence that inspired epic boss battles in other franchises such as God of War. His long-delayed The Last Guardian explored companionship through a giant creature, though with mixed reception. Now independent, Ueda continues to shape gaming with projects yet to be revealed. While Ghost of Yotei has gone gold and is now right around the corner, other segments of PlayStation Studios are on far less sturdy ground. Fairgames (or Fairgame$, if you like marketing) is seemingly the latest victim of an unprecedented run of bad decision-making, execution, and leadership within Sony's first party, as the upcoming shooter has shed its director, often (though not always) a dire sign for any project. Taken with recent reports (from this very show) of poor internal playtesting -- all the while Haven has already shed its major front-facing face and co-founder Jade Raymond -- we simply have to wonder whether Fairgames will ever launch at all. And if it does, does it have any potential to succeed whatsoever? Other news this week includes the rumored reemergence of Insomniac's Wolverine project, downward-revised SSD space for upcoming PS5 consoles, a fresh look at the promising Uncharted-like IO title 007: First Light, and much more. Then: Listener inquiries! Does Naughty Dog actually represent the pinnacle of game dev? How much can people twist themselves into a knot to justify piracy? What kind of pressure are studios and publishers under to adopt AI solutions? Will "Alleghany Hogs" catch on around the world? A new job listing over at PlayStation shows that more games are headed to Xbox. Naturally, the internet did its thing and we saw some crazy titles get tossed out as ideas for ports: The Last Of Us, Uncharted, Spider-Man, God Of War, and so on.
