Tonight we celebrate the career of Terry Gilliam! What happens when the animator from Monty Python decides to direct movies? You get Terry Gilliam — an American who somehow made the most British films imaginable.Gilliam's fingerprints are all over Monty Python's Flying Circus — those cut-out animations, the grotesque faces, the surreal leaps between worlds. And when he moved into directing, he carried that style with him: cluttered sets, exaggerated characters, satire of authority, and a constant blur between dream and reality. You see it evolve across three films. Time Bandits — childhood fantasy meets biting satire, a boy escaping his consumer-obsessed parents to loot history with dwarves. The Adventures of Baron Munchausen — a sprawling tale of impossible adventures, about how imagination itself becomes resistance in a world closing in. And Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas — Hunter S. Thompson's American nightmare, filtered through Gilliam's absurd, grotesque lens, with Johnny Depp mumbling like a Monty Python character for two straight hours.Gilliam's films are infamous for their production disasters — blown budgets, lawsuits, near career-enders. But that's exactly why he matters. In an age of safe blockbusters, Gilliam shows what happens when you chase imagination at any cost. His movies are messy, personal, and unforgettable.Terry Gilliam isn't just a filmmaker. He's the warning and the inspiration — proof that cinema can still be wild.Disclaimer: The following may contain offensive language, adult humor, and/or content that some viewers may find offensive – The views and opinions expressed by any one speaker does not explicitly or necessarily reflect or represent those of Mark Radulich or W2M Network.Mark Radulich and his wacky podcast on all the things:https://linktr.ee/markkind76alsohttps://www.teepublic.com/user/radulich-in-broadcasting-networkFB Messenger: Mark Radulich LCSWTiktok: @markradulichtwitter: @MarkRadulichInstagram: markkind76RIBN Album Playlist: https://suno.com/playlist/91d704c9-d1ea-45a0-9ffe-5069497bad59

*Apologies for the sound quality this episode, we had lost the original file but used a lower quality backup* Despite mixed results with previous movies, the GBGBs embarked on their 3rd Terry Gilliam project with The Adventures of Baron Munchausen (1988)! This movie stars John Neville as our titular Baron who spins a wild tale of his exploits to a beleaguered theater crowd while the Ottoman empire lays siege to their city. To say hijinks ensue would be an understatement. This fella gets into some real wacky stuff. Denali does his best to be fair but did NOT like this watch, but we may have some diverging opinions in the mix this episode.    Also discussed: telling tall tales, how safe are hot air balloons really? and where does this movie fit in the DC Cinematic Universe?   Thanks for stopping by!

This week on Shoot the Hostage, Sarah and Dan are taking a hit out of the little brown bottle as they dive headfirst into the quintessential drug-induced fever dream that is Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas (1998). Join us as we navigate the most paranoid movie known to man, based on Hunter S. Thompson's unreadably long-titled 1971 book. We'll explore why Johnny Depp's portrayal of Raoul Duke might be his career best, topped only by his co-star Benicio del Toro as Dr. Gonzo, the lawyer who leads you astray, overpays for lemon meringue pie and steals every scene he's in.   Director Terry Gilliam was the perfect choice for this savage journey to the heart of the American dream, infusing it with his signature blend of surrealism, satire and more Dutch angles than you can shake a stick at. What to expect from the episode: The casting choices of Johnny Depp and Benicio del Toro and what could have been if the project had gotten off the ground in the 1970's. Discussion around Terry Gilliams work and his surreal style, from Dutch angles to reptile people (thank you Rob Bottin). How the film captures the end of the American Dream. Discussions on Gonzo journalism and its relevance to modern documentary filmmaking. Our take on the Christina Ricci scene and why is still makes us uncomfortable Whether the movie glorifies drugs or is a cautionary tale of hedonism. Kerry and Collin are joined by Jeff Broitman (formerly of the podcast Fresh Perspective) to talk about one of Collin's all-time favorite films, Terry Gilliam's 1985 masterpiece "Brazil." It also happens to be one of Jeff's favorite movies as well. While the film certainly belongs in the "Christmas adjacent" category of Christmas movies, there is nevertheless a richness to it that warrants a long discussion on the film's artistic merit, its place in film history and the role it played in completely disrupting the studio system at the time of its release. It's not a movie for everybody and was never meant to be, but Gilliam's off-center vision of "the future" keeps gaining relevance and becomes more prescient with each passing decade. A very Happy Christmas! The film also rightfully earns its place in... the Book.  Book movies covered: "Brazil" (1985) "Juliet of the Spirits" (1965) "The Killing Fields" (1984)

It's our 300th episode and we honor a listener request for this milestone. The Fisher King (1991) could not be made today–not because of politics or cultural changes, but because it's impossible to neatly classify. A love story, a tale of redemption, a disturbing study of psychosis, a romantic comedy, and an Artthurian quest, the film combines genres in ways that some audiences–or at least producers–might not appreciate. But the film is hilarious, frightening, and ultimately affirming of its two lead characters' decisions to abandon their despair and find meaning in their lives. This week on the Exciting & New podcast, Jason, Andy and Dana welcome Jim back on the podcast as we discuss the 1985 surreal comedy Brazi.  This one was a divisive one (at least from the point of veiw of one person).  A little too Monty Python for some, a little too batshit crazy for others.  Robert DeNiro for some reason shows up.  There's a Hobbit (or is he an Android) and Super Mario shows up.  This move was a weird one.  Apparently this is part 2 of Terry Gilliam's "Trilogy of Imagination".  If this is what he is imagining, I feel sorry for this guy when he closes his eyes to go to sleep at night.  Anyway, the podcast is just about as weird as the movie we are discussing.  Enjoy!

SEASON 3 EPISODE 120: COUNTDOWN WITH KEITH OLBERMANN A-Block (1:45) SPECIAL COMMENT: We’ve all known it would come to this; we’ve all WARNED it would come to this; we’ve all PREDICTED they’d try to ease the knife in slowly, they’d take the boiling frog route, and here it comes. It’s in every piece of political science fiction from "1984" to "Brazil" to "V For Vendetta." And it is now real: if everything Trump does deserves criticism and gets criticism there is only one thing for Trump and his gang to do: prosecute criticism of Trump and claim those WHO criticize him are aiding and abetting terrorists. The ultimate Thought Crime was given voice by no less a figure than Trump's Counterterrorism Director, who, since Trump found the worst possible person to do each job (and bin Laden is dead) is Sebastian Gorka. The threat is connected to the push to send not just immigrants to rot in a For-Profit El Salvador Rendition Center, but American citizens too, especially those who standup to Trump's attempt to purge Hispanics from this country. Axios reports that one of the other potential new Orwellian crimes would be advising detainees of their rights. If that's not directed at AOC I don't know what could be. B-Block (25:20) THE WORST PERSONS IN THE WORLD: Derrick Van Orden attacks Wisconsin's governor because Van Orden thinks Milwaukee kids are stupid - and he misspells the word "how" in his post. Brian Kilmeade's Hegseth spoiler alert: he calls him "former secretary." And we are all very proud here that one of 'our own' has reduced Bill Maher to graffiti. Further details on "My Dinner With Adolf." C-Block (37:45) THINGS I PROMISED NOT TO TELL: I had literally forgotten - until I literally worked through the neighborhood - that I made my Broadway singing and dancing debut seven years ago. I mean literally, on stage, during an actual Broadway show. If it made that much of an impression on me, imagine how bored the audience was! See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Gonzo Hellscape: Terry Gilliam's Fear & Loathing in Las Vegas In 1998 Director Terry Gilliam - a director whose cinematic career has been fraught with difficulty on the level of Job (see 2002s Lost in La Mancha) was finally successful in bringing to the screen Hunter S. Thompson's 1971 Classic roman á clef of excess, paranoia, idealism, and disappointment, Fear & Loathing in Las Vegas: A Savage Journey to the Heart of the American Dream. A polariizing film upon its release in 1998, Giliam's interpretation of Thompson's 1971 vision is both awe-inspiring and troubling. There is a tremendous amount to admire in this film while at the same time there is a tremendous amount to be critical of . . . We tackle both perspectives and struggle to find some greater understanding of the late 60s, early 70s, and pain and disappointment of the 2nd decade of a new millennium. It's an interesting and volatile discussion between two friends. Take a listen and let us know what yout think about our reaction to Thompson's vision as rendered through the mind of Terry Gilliam and the equally outrageous and powerful performances of stars Johnny Depp (as Thompson) and Benicio Del Toro (as Chicano activist Oscar Zeta Acosta - the 300lb Samoan of Thompson's writing). Two movies here where audiences went in expecting one thing, and might just have got another. 1991's The Fisher King though for a time was going to be a Disney movie, before the studio decided it was too dark. Directors such as Steven Spielberg and James Cameron were mentioned, before Terry Gilliam - coming off the back of a commercial flop - decided to break all three of his conditions for taking on a film. Director Joe Carnahan meanwhile was coming off his big studio movie - The A-Team - when he decided he wanted to pivot to something smaller. He chose The Grey, a film he developed, and which would be sold off the back of imagery of Liam Neeson getting ready to punch a wolf. That, though, wasn't the full picture...
