HEAVY Music Interviews
Death. War. Fire With BENNO And RYAN From AWAKEN THE HATE

HEAVY Music Interviews

Interview by Kris PetersBrisbane groove metal outfit Awaken The Hate are a band in transition. Transition within themselves, their membership, their direction and their sound. But one thing they are not, at least internally, is a band in conflict. Far from it.As a band, their vision for the future is clearer than ever, their goals resolute. For Awaken The Hate, the future is now, and is coming off the back of a trilogy of singles dubbed Death. War. Fire that was recently completed with the release of the third and final single, Planet Death. Each of the three songs, started by Reign Of Fire before Contradiction Of War seconded the trilogy and Planet Death rounded things out, portrays a subtle changing of musical landscape for Awaken The Hate and casts an ominous eye into what the future holds for those who dare to follow.Concluding this ambitious new movement for the band, Awaken The Hate next week take the new tracks on the road for their first full national tour, starting in Perth on May 8 before hitting Adelaide, Melbourne and Sydney over consecutive days. Welcome to Awaken The Hate, and board the train if you have the mettle.HEAVY was joined earlier today by frontman Benno and drummer Ryan to dive deeper into the Death. War. Fire trilogy and what it means for Awaken The Hate moving forward."Steve, who started Awaken The Hate, made the decision at the end of last year to step away," Benno began. "That was all for his personal reasons. These were the last of the three songs that he wrote with the band, and we thought this would be a fitting way to say goodbye. He actually came back to record them with us. He's still a very good friend of the band, and the door's always open if he ever wants to come back.""Planet Death is environmental, Contradiction of War is very political, and then Reign of Fire is a bit more spiritual about the whole thing," he continued, focusing on the three songs. "So that's what the concept about it was, and then releasing them as a trilogy was to say thanks to Steve and also finally get a bit more than two tracks out there for people (laughs)."In the full interview, we focused more on their recent single releases, particularly Planet Death, which received positive feedback from band members. We discussed the trilogy of singles honouring former member Steve, with each song addressing different themes. Reign of Fire was highlighted for its unique inspiration and straightforward approach, while Contradiction of War, released on Anzac Day, aimed to honour veterans and provoke thought about military service. We talked about recording thir latest tracks live, enhancing the emotional resonance, and are eager to test new material during their upcoming national tour. We also chat about balancing their music careers with personal responsibilities while engaging audiences and supporting local acts, plus more.Become a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/heavy-music-interviews--2687660/support.

Welcome back to Not A Bomb! This is the podcast where we explore some of cinema's biggest box failures and decide if they deserve a second chance. January has become an impromptu Matthew McConaughey month or “McConaughthon.” Last week, the guys tackled Tiptoes. This week, they had to do a hard turn into science-fiction with 2002's post-apocalyptic film - Reign of Fire. Both a financial and critical disappointment, Reign of Fire finds a stellar early 2000's cast fighting fire-breathing dragons. The film has become somewhat of a cult classic, but do Troy and Brad agree? Download to find out! Reign of Fire is directed by Rob Bowman and stars Matthew McConaughey, Christian Bale, Izabella Scorupco, and Gerald Butler. Head over to the Not A Bomb Tee Public store and check them out. Special thanks to Ted Blair for the amazing designs! We're committed to hearing your feedback and suggestions. 1991 was a year unlike any other. KFC changed their name to avoid paying royalties to the “trademarked” commonwealth for which they were named (whereas K-Y Jelly could not be reached for comment), Terminator 2:  Judgment Day was blowing up the box office as the number one movie in America, the first ever “world wide web” website was introduced to the world by Tim Berners-Lee, and just 6 days after that, on August 12th, 1991, Coroner's fourth album (Mental Vortex) AND Metallica's self-titled fifth album were BOLTH released on the EXACT same day.    It's time to get in the time machine and get ready to start “shooting ropes & painting walls” with our “squeezies” as we reveal the name of the band many have notoriously deemed “the hawk-tuah of metal”, as well as the frontman who resembled “a hot Canadian chick” (back in the day) before touring with Pantera, because we're going back to a time when high school was everything and the idea of retiring to the swingingest, most syphilis-infested subdivision in The Sunshine State was some abstract, fantastical, utopian concept that stretched far beyond the comprehension of our young, teenage, “brain snagged” minds.   “AwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwMannnnnnn” it's time to learn the key ingredients of “vampire jerky” and remember that “you can still rock with a high voice” (even if you've got on your “gloves of shame”). Find out where you DO NOT want to get “heartworms”, be sure to establish firm boundaries so you'll know exactly where “the aftermarket stuff stops with the ladies”, prepare to enjoy some “tangy flan” (courtesy of the outro-reel super-mix) and JOIN US as we reflect on all the fantastic metal released on August 12th, 1991 and the other 364 days of that year as we travel back in time to THE YEAR OF OUR RIFF LORD: 1991.   Visit www.metalnerdery.com/podcast for more on this episode Help Support Metal Nerdery https://www.patreon.com/metalnerderypodcast Leave us a Voicemail to be played on a future episode: 980-666-8182   Metal Nerdery Tees and Hoodies – metalnerdery.com/merch and kindly leave us a review and/or rating on the iTunes/Apple Podcasts - Spotify or your favorite Podcast app Listen on iTunes, Spotify, Podbean, or wherever you get your Podcasts. Welcome to season 8!!!! What better way to start the season than with a Matthew McConaughey film, and one I hadn't seen before. In present-day London, 12-year-old Quinn watches as his mother wakes an enormous fire-breathing beast from its centuries-long slumber. Twenty years later, much of the world has been scarred by the beast and its offspring. As a fire chief, Quinn (Christian Bale) is responsible for warding off the beasts and keeping a community alive as they eke out a meager existence. Into their midst comes a hotshot American, Van Zan (Matthew McConaughey), who says he has a way to kill the beasts. Decoding Reign of Fire: Dragons as an Allegory for Sin

Men at the Movies

Coming up on the men at the movies podcast, we slay some dragons with Reign of Fire. If the dragons are symbols for sin, we see two flawed approaches. For Van Zandt, his life is obsessed with killing dragons and taking back territory in a legalistic manner. Quinn is always on defense and has a defeatist mentality. The problem with both perspectives is that they focus on the dragons, and not life. In the same way, we focus on sin when we should be focused on the Savior. It's time to kick out the squatters, and take some territory back this week on the Men at the Movies podcast. Questions Which approach to sin have you taken in your life? How have you seen one little decision snowball into “thousands” of regrets? Where do you feel helpless from sin? What territory has it taken? What would it look like to take territory back from the dragons in your life? How have you identified by your sin instead of your salvation? What do you think about the idea that all of your sins (past and future) are already forgiven? Why are you squabbling in the mud and hiding in the castle? What does freedom look like? Where are you focusing: your sin or your savior? Check out our YouTube channel (www.youtube.com/@menatthemovies) for bonus content. Gerard Butler's accent isn't the only thing that's fire-hot in this episode; our latest podcast episode delves deep into the heart of this dragon epic, exploring the risks and creative choices that defined its production. The journey begins with a discussion on the medieval-meets-military elements that gave "Reign of Fire" its unique flavor. Producer Richard 'Dick' Zanuck, known for his work on classics like "Jaws," took a calculated risk on a spec script by novice Wisconsin writers Greg Chabot and Kevin Paterka, resulting in a tale that melded apocalyptic destruction with dragon lore.
