On the exciting conclusion of May of Damon, we are discussing a cult classic that helped launch the poker boom of the early 2000s, inspired millions of dudes to think they could turn $100 into a Vegas bankroll, and gave us the most unhinged Oreo-eating villain of all time. It's Matt Damon playing a genius again, Ed Norton being a menace, and John Malkovich going full cartoon Russian mobster. We are of course talking about 1998's Rounders. •0:00:00 - Introductions •0:03:30 - Memories of first viewing •0:09:00 - Pertinent movie details •0:12:30- Critical and fan reviews •0:20:00 - Scene by scene breakdown •1:30:00 - Modern day ratings ————————————————— **Support us at http://patreon.com/confusedbreakfast for bonus weekly episodes, voting on upcoming movies, giving your modern-day ratings on our movies and much more. **Mail us something The Confused Breakfast PO Box 10016 Cedar Rapids, IA 52402-9802 Special thanks to our executive producers- Josh Miller, Starling, Michael Guiliano and NicMad. How did they manage to fuck up a simple western? How does Jeb know the logic of Hex's fabricated powers??? WHY?!
In the first half of this two-part episode, author Rae Wilde ("Merciless Waters," I Do Not Apologize For My Position on Men") returns to talk about her upcoming novella "I Can Fix Her" (June 3, CLASH Books). They discuss the terror of "nightmare logic," Rae's interest in exploring toxic sapphic romance, the "Wilde Test" (i.e. decentering men altogether as significant drivers of plot in narrative), the unique lure of obsession, and the hazards of power in relationships. Rae and Scotty also dive into an impromptu conversation about Darren Aronofsky's divisive 2017 psychological horror film "mother!" In the second half, Scotty welcomes Albuquerque-based actor Peter Diseth ("Roswell, New Mexico," "Better Call Saul") to talk about his performance as Jorg in the new satirical horror film "Opus" (2025), starring Ayo Edebiri, John Malkovich, Juliette Lewis, and written/directed by newcomer Mark Anthony Green. Aside from discussing his experience on the film itself, they spend a few minutes on Peter's background in the New Mexico film and theatre scene, explore the fine line between comedy and horror, and consider the trend towards "the horror of politeness" in film like "Opus," "The Invitation" (2015), "Speak No Evil" (2022), and "The Menu" (2022). PUBLIC VERSION. Filmmaker Mark Anthony Green (OPUS) joins Joe to discuss the making of his debut feature film. From how Mark's former career as a journalist informed the plot of OPUS (now available on VOD)… to the films that inspired him to pursue filmmaking… to the biggest learning curve he experienced transitioning from one medium to another… to the joy of collaborating with actors like John Malkovich, Ayo Edebiri, Murray Bartlett and Parker Posey… to being a leader and collaborator to the point of sweeping his own sets down… to working with legendary musician Nile Rogers on the music… to the film's triumphant premiere at this year's Sundance Film Festival and its subsequent theatrical release… Mark's first time experience is one that every aspiring filmmaker will enjoy hearing about. PLUS Adam returns from Malta to discuss his experience shooting his latest film ASCENT, share some fun anecdotes on the production and explain why the experience made Adam feel so old.
Presence and mystique are two words that best describe the one and only John Malkovich. He has mastered both the stage and the screen. John continues to act and direct all around the world. He is one of the most well respected artists of the past 50 years.
We're diving into one another's heads to explore the romance of Spike Jonze's 1999 genre-defying hit Being John Malkovich! Join in as we discuss the 7 1/2th floor, the script's sparse character descriptions, the movie's exploration of gender and sexuality, and our own experiences with Malkovich. Plus: Does Malkovich ever sleep? How are they retrieving their clients in New Jersey? What's Maxine's job? And, most importantly, why couldn't it be Being Tom Cruise? A viewing of an old 80s movie has Andrew and Luke wondering when John Malkovich became a Serious Actor. And Luke is still embarrassed about a “four grape breakfast” situation that unfolded in his hotel this morning.
Our 'movies about presidents' series continues (probably for four more years) with a much better movie this time. 1993's Wolfgang Peterson joint In the Line of Fire, featuring Clint Eastwood again (are we... doing a Clint Eastwood season now?) as jaded old Secret Service agent Frank Horrigan, veteran of a particular epic fail in Dallas 1963, up against the 90s serial killer shtick of rogue CIA super-assassin John Malkovich and, even more dauntingly, the merciless side-eye of fellow agent Rene Russo. A superior slice of 90s Hollywood nonsense with a nice line in gentle self-mockery and some adorable early digital effects. This is a fun one, kids. Full episode exclusive for Patreon subscribers. On the latest episode of Cinema Royale, it's kind of a throwback to when we reviewed multiple movies all the time. I'm joined by my homie Chris Bumbray of Joblo.com to talk about A24's two most recent genre flicks, Opus starring Ayo Edibiri and John Malkovich, and Death of a Unicorn with Paul Rudd and Jenna Ortega. The boutique distributor keeps taking big swings with these high concept satirical thrillers but why don't they seem to be working as they should? Plus, Chris and I get back into our comfort zone with A Working Man, Jason Statham's reunion with The Beekeeper director David Ayer! Send us a textEvery March, Hollywood seems to enter a strange twilight zone – award season is over, summer blockbusters remain months away, and the theatrical landscape becomes a curious mix of studio castoffs and hidden gems. This year proves particularly fascinating as we've witnessed an unprecedented $320 million Netflix disaster alongside genuinely brilliant filmmaking that's struggling to find its audience. The stark contrast between something like The Electric State – a bloated, CGI-heavy disappointment from the once-celebrated Russo Brothers – and Steven Soderbergh's masterfully crafted spy thriller Black Bag perfectly illustrates the film industry's current identity crisis. While Netflix burns through hundreds of millions for minimal cultural impact, filmmakers like Paul Schrader continue creating thought-provoking character studies like O Canada with a fraction of those resources. We're particularly excited about Opus, a psychological folk horror that blends elements of Get Out and Midsommar with John Malkovich delivering some of his finest work as an aging pop star. This divisive but mesmerizing directorial debut from Mark Anthony Green represents exactly the kind of original filmmaking that deserves theatrical support. Meanwhile, smaller releases like Borderline demonstrate how even promising premises with talented leads like Samara Weaving can falter without proper development. What's becoming increasingly clear is that budget size bears little correlation to quality or cultural significance. The most memorable cinematic experiences of the season come from filmmakers with clear vision and artistic purpose rather than those with the deepest pockets. Whether you're planning your next theater visit or deciding what to stream, let quality guide your choices rather than marketing budgets or algorithm recommendations.Support the show
Hello and thank you for downloading another episode of The Flixters Podcast! On this week's episode we discuss the latest release from hitmakers, A24. This is the studio that brought us Oscar winning Everything, Everywhere All At Once, or horror classic Hereditary. These guys know a thing or two about being off kilter, and dare we say it, edgy? Sometimes the mix is hard to get right but if a film studio can do it, it's them. Opus, their latest offering, starring the wonderful Ayo Edibiri (The Bear) and Hollywood veteran John Malkovich, comes across as a comedy but beneath the veneer lies a dark psychological twist. Does that twist pay off? Check out the show for more deets! And if you've seen the film hit us up on our YouTube channel and let us know your thoughts. In Mark Anthony Green's debut feature, “Opus,” a young journalist (Ayo Edebiri) is invited to the home of a reclusive pop icon (John Malkovich) who mysteriously disappeared 30 years ago. The first-time director drew on his own experience as a former GQ editor who covered celebrity and style for 13 years. He joins Tom Power to talk about the film and how it explores the illusion of celebrity culture from the perspective of a journalist. After writing out some of my reviews on Instagram, I felt that some movies deserved a longer conversation, so I gave it one! These are the mini episodes, mainly focussed on new (or at least released in the last few months) that I would normally write about, but felt like talking about. These pods won't be as long or have as much info as the larger episodes, but you'll get my opinion on them and a little background. Opus hit theaters March 14th, and I checked out the thriller from A24. The lackluster reviews don't make the film seem promising, but it does have a nice "celebrity cult vs investigative journalist" feel to it. I tried my best not to spoil it.If you're not doing so already, please like and follow Classic American Movies on Instagram and Facebook. I do free movie giveaways, mini movie reviews and more! Also, I decided to dabble in making my own slasher film entitled “Bishop's Day”. Check out the Instagram page for updates.

We begin with "The Electric State," an empty, ugly, $320 million action extravaganza from longtime MCU directors Anthony and Joe Russo. It's a retro-futuristic, post-apocalyptic story set in the '90s, after humans and robots have gone to war. The ridiculous cast includes Millie Bobby Brown, Chris Pratt, Stanley Tucci, Anthony Mackie, Brian Cox, Jenny Slate, Ke Huy Quan and Woody Harrelson as Mr. Peanut. Yes, you read that right. Streaming now on Netflix. We were also disappointed with "Opus," about a legendary pop star who invites a group of journalists to his remote retreat to listen to his first album in three decades. It's an A24 horror movie, and it feels awfully familiar. It also features an impressive cast including Ayo Edebiri, John Malkovich, Murray Bartlett, Juliette Lewis and Amber Midthunder. In theaters now. And over at our Patreon, we recap the latest episode of "Daredevil: Born Again" on Disney+. Thanks for sharing some of your time with us -- we'll try to do this in person again soon! Steve Prokopy looks at the chaos of a young woman and her Zambian family (On Becoming a Guinea Fowl) while Samara Weaving plays a pop star dealing with a stalker (Borderline). Daffy Duck and Porky Pig try to save the world from zombies and aliens (The Day the Earth Blew Up: A Looney Tunes Movie) while Chris Pratt and Millie Bobbie Brown live in a world of robots (The Electric State). Jack Quaid can feel no pain while trying to rescue his girlfriend (Novocaine) and Steven Soderbergh gives us Cate Blanchett and Michael Fassbender as married spies (Black Bag). 0:00 - Intro 1:17 - On Becoming a Guinea Fowl 9:04 - Borderline 16:14 – The Day the Earth Blew Up: A Looney Tunes Movie 23:41 – The Electric State 36:24 - Opus 50:17 - Novocaine 1:03:08 - Black Bag 1:14:59 - Outro
