See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

We're diving headfirst into high-flying mayhem with Con Air, a chaotic symphony of explosions, one-liners, and mid-air madness—handpicked by our awesome Patreon supporter Susan from the Geek Girl Soup podcast!Con Air (1997) was born out of the mid-90s action movie boom, with producer Jerry Bruckheimer riding high from previous hits like The Rock and Crimson Tide. Wanting to blend testosterone-fueled chaos with a high-concept premise, Bruckheimer and the team crafted a story about a maximum-security prisoner transport gone wildly off the rails. The script, written by Scott Rosenberg, was inspired in part by a real federal program, but the film quickly ditched realism in favor of bombast and explosions. Simon West, a former music video director making his feature debut, was brought on to direct, bringing a flashy style that matched Bruckheimer's over-the-top vision. The production faced major challenges, especially with the practical effects and large set pieces involving planes, crashes, and convicts with very short fuses. Shot primarily in Utah and Nevada, including sequences at the infamous "Boneyard" in the Mojave Desert, the film used a combination of real aircraft, full-scale models, and miniature effects. Despite the logistical headaches, Con Air brought together a ludicrously stacked cast including Nicolas Cage, John Malkovich, Steve Buscemi, and Ving Rhames. Cage famously trained with DEA agents and adopted a Southern accent for his role — choices that added to the movie's now-iconic (and deeply memeable) legacy. If you enjoy the show we have a Patreon, so become a supporter.www.patreon.com/thevhsstrikesbackTrailer Guy Plot SummaryIn a world where justice is served on wings of chaos, Con Air follows newly paroled Army Ranger Cameron Poe, who just wants to get home to his wife and daughter—but finds himself trapped on a high-security prisoner transport flight hijacked by some of the most dangerous criminals in America. With time running out and a plane full of maniacs soaring toward disaster, Poe must fight from the inside to stop the carnage, clear his name, and maybe deliver a heartfelt bunny rabbit along the way. Buckle up—this flight's going down in action-packed, slow-mo glory.thevhsstrikesback@gmail.comhttps://linktr.ee/vhsstrikesback

Clint Eastwood might be known for playing grizzled, hard-as-nails lawmen, but in our In the Line of Fire (1993) Review, he takes things in a different direction, just slightly. This week, the Born to Watch crew dives into this overlooked 90s political thriller that pits Eastwood's aging Secret Service agent Frank Horrigan against one of cinema's most memorable villains: John Malkovich as the terrifying Mitch Leary.Whitey, G-Man, and Will “The Worky” are in studio to unpack the deadly game of cat and mouse that unfolds in Wolfgang Petersen's taut, tense, and occasionally trope-heavy flick. What follows is a mix of movie breakdowns, personal throwbacks, accidental roastings, and a bold declaration that Malkovich might just rival Hannibal Lecter as one of the great screen psychopaths.Eastwood: Still Got It (But Also, He's 63) Gow calls Eastwood's performance “Dirty Harry with a blue pill next to the bed.” Whitey thinks it's flirty, even charming, a rare side of Clint. Will just seems shocked that he's now the Born to Watch Eastwood expert. The team debates whether Frank Horrigan is one of Clint's best post-Unforgiven roles or just another iteration of his go-to tough guy with a badge and a haunted past.Malkovich: BAFTA Noms, Creepy Vibes, and a Murderous Basement John Malkovich steals the show as Mitch Leary, a former CIA assassin with a grudge, a creepy lair that looks suspiciously like Buffalo Bill's basement, and a habit of tormenting Clint over the phone. His calm delivery, terrifying intensity, and sheer unpredictability earned him an Academy Award nomination and earned our crew's unanimous praise. The guys marvel at his screen presence, his range, and yes, his mysterious career choices.'90s Tropes and Why We Love Them The gang agrees: In the Line of Fire is soaked in ‘90s action movie tropes, and that's not a complaint. From overbearing chiefs of staff and cheesy one-liners to conveniently timed sniper reveals and romantic subplots with massive age gaps, the movie wears its era on its sleeve. Renee Russo's chemistry with Clint is questionable at best, and her role sparks a deep (and hilarious) debate about whether she's “a good sort” or a “right-light good sort.”Clint's Dating Age Gap: A Cinematic Tradition With Eastwood at 63 and Russo at 39, the romantic tension raises eyebrows. “She's two years younger than his daughter,” Whitey points out. “It could've been a father-daughter thing.” The conversation doesn't stop there; it spirals into references to Seinfeld, Once Upon a Time in Hollywood, and Monty Burns.Cat, Mouse, and Jazz Piano This movie isn't just about bullets and bravado — it's got emotional weight too. Frank's regret over JFK's assassination adds gravitas to the plot, and the constant tension between him and Leary plays out over landlines and cassette recorders. The team loves the phone calls, the psychological warfare, and yes, Clint's real-life jazz piano skills.IN THIS EPISODE:Eastwood's “grizzled flirt” energy gets ratedMalkovich's villain performance gets compared to movie greatsThe trailer's original JFK-themed edit sparks a nostalgic digression‘90s newsagents, porno mags, and the glory days of inside sport magazinesDamo cops heat in the Snobs Report beef from a random footy guyIt's a movie about obsession, redemption, and running beside the presidential limo at 60+. Our 'movies about presidents' series continues (probably for four more years) with a much better movie this time. 1993's Wolfgang Peterson joint In the Line of Fire, featuring Clint Eastwood again (are we... doing a Clint Eastwood season now?) as jaded old Secret Service agent Frank Horrigan, veteran of a particular epic fail in Dallas 1963, up against the 90s serial killer shtick of rogue CIA super-assassin John Malkovich and, even more dauntingly, the merciless side-eye of fellow agent Rene Russo. Send us a textEvery March, Hollywood seems to enter a strange twilight zone – award season is over, summer blockbusters remain months away, and the theatrical landscape becomes a curious mix of studio castoffs and hidden gems. This year proves particularly fascinating as we've witnessed an unprecedented $320 million Netflix disaster alongside genuinely brilliant filmmaking that's struggling to find its audience. The stark contrast between something like The Electric State – a bloated, CGI-heavy disappointment from the once-celebrated Russo Brothers – and Steven Soderbergh's masterfully crafted spy thriller Black Bag perfectly illustrates the film industry's current identity crisis. While Netflix burns through hundreds of millions for minimal cultural impact, filmmakers like Paul Schrader continue creating thought-provoking character studies like O Canada with a fraction of those resources. We're particularly excited about Opus, a psychological folk horror that blends elements of Get Out and Midsommar with John Malkovich delivering some of his finest work as an aging pop star. This divisive but mesmerizing directorial debut from Mark Anthony Green represents exactly the kind of original filmmaking that deserves theatrical support. Meanwhile, smaller releases like Borderline demonstrate how even promising premises with talented leads like Samara Weaving can falter without proper development. What's becoming increasingly clear is that budget size bears little correlation to quality or cultural significance. The most memorable cinematic experiences of the season come from filmmakers with clear vision and artistic purpose rather than those with the deepest pockets. Whether you're planning your next theater visit or deciding what to stream, let quality guide your choices rather than marketing budgets or algorithm recommendations.Support the show

After writing out some of my reviews on Instagram, I felt that some movies deserved a longer conversation, so I gave it one! These are the mini episodes, mainly focussed on new (or at least released in the last few months) that I would normally write about, but felt like talking about. These pods won't be as long or have as much info as the larger episodes, but you'll get my opinion on them and a little background. Opus hit theaters March 14th, and I checked out the thriller from A24. The lackluster reviews don't make the film seem promising, but it does have a nice "celebrity cult vs investigative journalist" feel to it. It's a Pi Day miracle: We recorded these reviews in the same place at the same time for the first time in a long time. Five years, to be exact. And it was so nice to be together again at Alonso's apartment on this rainy day in LA. We begin with "The Electric State," an empty, ugly, $320 million action extravaganza from longtime MCU directors Anthony and Joe Russo. It's a retro-futuristic, post-apocalyptic story set in the '90s, after humans and robots have gone to war. The ridiculous cast includes Millie Bobby Brown, Chris Pratt, Stanley Tucci, Anthony Mackie, Brian Cox, Jenny Slate, Ke Huy Quan and Woody Harrelson as Mr. Peanut. Yes, you read that right. Streaming now on Netflix. We were also disappointed with "Opus," about a legendary pop star who invites a group of journalists to his remote retreat to listen to his first album in three decades. It's an A24 horror movie, and it feels awfully familiar. It also features an impressive cast including Ayo Edebiri, John Malkovich, Murray Bartlett, Juliette Lewis and Amber Midthunder. In theaters now. And over at our Patreon, we recap the latest episode of "Daredevil: Born Again" on Disney+. Thanks for sharing some of your time with us -- we'll try to do this in person again soon!
