Anika and Liz don their sparkliest shirts and biggest earrings, and sit down to watch Star Trek: Of Gods And Men, a fan film starring Nichelle Nichols, Alan Ruck, Walter Koenig and more. You can watch it here, or -- in a much smaller window -- watch an unauthorised HD remaster.  We're in our Alan Ruck era, but we were not prepared for the unbelievable hotness of Garrett Wang, or the SURPRISE LIBERTARIANISM. We take … issue. With the timeline-changing catalyst.  This comment from a Redditor who claims to have worked on the production sets it in context.  Of Gods and Men is in conversation with the other science fiction of its era (2006-2008) in an interesting way. Nichelle Nichols carried this movie, and it is tragic she never got a showcase like this in official Trek Alternate Universe Chekov is a LIBERTARIAN FREEDOM FIGHTER with an unspeakable wig Alan Ruck and Chase Masterton have great chemistry The costumes are … hmm. Well. You should know that the entire time Anika is talking about Alien Nation, Liz was thinking of Coneheads

Putting together VideoFuzzy ep. 100 -- coffee certainly helps!   Hi! My name is Terry J. Aman, marking my 100th episode of VideoFuzzy, reporting the progress I've made in cataloging thousands of VHS transfers and digital recordings. This set covers discs 1751 to 1800 in my Classic Collection. I open with a project overview highlighting some of my finds. For my Fuzzy Feature, I encountered the 100th episode of "Bones" that recalled the first case Booth and Bones worked on together. I found a similar story construction in "In Plain Sight," and talked about that one as well. Under Cross Connections I trace Golden Threads Todd Giebenhain and, later, Michael Shamus Wiles. Also, appearances by Amy Acker, Lee Majors, Kathy Najimy, Bryan Batt, Alan Ruck, Stephen Root, Katie Sackhoff, Mark Bergeron, Angela Bassett, Sarah Silverman, Rita Moreno, Dana Delany, Sheryl Crow, Mary Pat Gleason, Marc A. Sheppard, Charlotte Arren, Johnny Broderick, Cyd Cherise, Fred Astaire, Jane Lynch, Olivia Munn and Brian Skala. And under Fond Reflections, love for Michelle Trachtenberg of "Buffy," "Mercy" and "Six Feet Under," and I share some headcanon from an "Angel" chat group I was in. In Video Outreach, I share comments from author and fellow podcaster Kemper Donovan on my review of "Loose Lips," available here: https://bit.ly/3C11ENN Kemper hosts the "All About Agatha" podcast here: https://bit.ly/43j4hnB Then I chat with my sister, Patti Ellingson, about shows we've enjoyed, including "Doctor Who," "Buffy the Vampire Slayer," "Bridgerton" and "Stranger Things." I know I've mentioned my sister's influence on my television viewing different times over the course of this production, and this felt like a fantastic opportunity to chat with her directly. So much fun! In my Classic Collection, I take almost a disc-by-disc deep dive on what I was finding in this set, beginning with a third meet-cute storyline I encountered in this set: the first season finale of "Human Target." Also, comments on "Arrested Development," "The Simpsons," "FlashForward," "Archer," "24," "Caprica," "Community," "Mercy," "Ugly Betty," "Parks and Recreation," "Justified," 2002 and 2005 MTV Movie Award shows, "The Daily Show" and "The Colbert Report," "Whose Line Is It Anyway?" C-SPAN coverage of the Affordable Care Act, "Breaking Bad," "The Big Bang Theory," "Jawbreaker," "Who's Afraid of Virginia Woolf?" "Batman Returns," "The Three Faces of Eve," "Sybil," Union activity at The Minot Daily News, "Star Trek Voyager," "Fawlty Towers," "Monty Python's Flying Circus," commercials and music videos, "LOST," "Cougar Town," "Castle," "Fringe," "Chuck," "Broadway Melody of 1940," "Silk Stockings," "V" and "Damages."  Also surfacing in this cataloging effort I found home movies, including a one-act presented at the Carnegie Center in Minot in 2002 or so called "Excerpts." Friends of mine read from books in my collection: https://bit.ly/3DslFO6 It's a bit silly, but if you think of books on your shelves murmuring to one another, that was the idea I was going for. Then, from 100 episodes, I share 100 clips! But there'd only be 99, right? Well, one of the clips I shared referenced outtakes from a "Michael Caine in Space" sketch on "The Late Late Show with Craig Ferguson" which, at the time, I had trouble locating. Since then, I was able to locate it here: https://bit.ly/4hnn9XM Enjoy! Finally, in What I've Been Watching, Ralph and I took in Larry Shue's "The Nerd" at the Vernal Theatre downtown, and I shared some thoughts. The company closes out its season with a production of Cole Porter's "Kiss Me Kate" coming up in mid-April, and we're looking forward to it. Tickets and information at https://www.vernaltheatre.com. TOP FIFTEEN: Here's a "Top Fifteen" episode guide for people looking for a quick read-in on this blog and podcast effort: https://videofuzzy.libsyn.com/about. Enjoy!

Inspired by such classics as The Birds and The Blob, M. Night subverted audience expectations to bring them a film about a whole new kind of terror... nothing at all! So, what really happened in M. Night Shyamalan's 2008 sci-fi / thriller, THE HAPPENING? With a cast that boasts Mark Wahlberg, Zooey Deschanel, John Leguizamo, and Succession's Jeremy Strong and Alan Ruck, it was a murderers row of actors who can go either way on the "are they bad or good" scale forced to compete with one of the worst scripts yet. Not much may have been happening, but it surely was fun watching it happen. Even more fun when you have a look at M. Night fans seriously trying to defend it. To think this isn't even as bad as it gets... "An act of nature, and we'll never fully understand it."

This week, it wouldn't be the final episode of July if we weren't talking about a huge new theatrical release, but we're doing it a bit differently this time around as for the very first time (officially anyway) we review two movies at the same time! July's canon consideration is 1996's Twister, directed by Jan de Bont and starring Helen Hunt, Bill Paxton, Jami Gertz, Cary Elwes, Lois Smith, Philip Seymour Hoffman, Alan Ruck, Todd Field, Joey Slotnick, Jeremy Davies and Zach Grenier, but we spend just as much if not more time discussing 2024's Twisters, directed Lee Isaac Chung and starring Daisy Edgar-Jones, Glen Powell, Anthony Ramos, Brandon Perea, Maura Tierney, Sasha Lane, Katy O'Brian, Kiernan Shipka, David Corenswet and Paul Scheer. And we're joined to discuss both by returning favourite / girlfriend of the show Ashley Olson, a self-confessed "weather girlie" for whom the original film has been a lifelong fave. It's a delightful chat as two prairie girls roast an ignorant city boy for knowing nothing about storm tracking. If you'd like to watch the films before listening along to our conversation, Twister is currently streaming on Crave and Starz in Canada at the time of publication, while Twisters can be found in theaters everywhere. Oh, you thought we would be discussing other works this week as well? Well, we're not. Two movies is more than enough, you sickos. We'll be back next week to kick off P.T.August, a month-long celebration of the works of Paul Thomas Anderson, beginning with 2012's The Master, a movie J Mo's been hauling around on Blu-ray for 11 years without ever having watched it. That all changes next Friday! So come on back now, as the rest of our PTA slate includes Phantom Thread, Inherent Vice, Licorice Pizza and concludes with our August canon entry Boogie Nights. Until then, we'll see you at the movies!!

The (air) pressure is on as we dive into some on-set stories, Wizard of Oz references, and barometric gossip as we break down the science and story logic behind a beloved 90s movie: 1996's Twister.Alright, buckle up, because we're diving into the whirlwind world of Twister! Picture this: back in '96, director Jan de Bont dropped a disaster thrill ride that had us all glued to the screen, courtesy of writers Michael Crichton and Anne-Marie Martin. It's about a bunch of gutsy storm chasers in Oklahoma, led by the tornado-whisperer Jo (Helen Hunt). Meanwhile, her ex, Bill (Bill Paxton), shows up with divorce papers just in time for a tornado party. But hold onto your weather-predicting prototypes - Jo unveils her brainchild, Dorothy, a cutting-edge weather gadget packed with sensors that could rewrite tornado research, which promises to beef up our tornado warning systems from a measly three minutes to a solid 15. Of course, no good blockbuster is complete without a villain. Enter Jonas Miller (Cary Elwes), a rival chaser with a snazzy device of his own, the DOT 3, which is basically a knockoff Dorothy. Talk about stormy competition! Cue a wild chase through tornado alley, with trucks in ditches, Dorothy prototypes flying, and power lines crashing down faster than you can say "F5!" And here's the kicker: amidst all the chaos, Twister isn't just Hollywood blowing hot air. It's inspired by real-life storm science, like the TOtable Tornado Observatory (TOTO), which paved the way for Dorothy. Sure, TOTO had its quirks (ever heard about its tango with an Oklahoma storm?), but it laid the groundwork for sticking sensors in tornadoes like nobody's business. So, while Twister cranks up the drama to eleven (seriously, who drives into an F5 tornado?) it sparked serious conversations about the future of tornado research. Could Dorothy's sensor-packed canisters really hold up in the eye of a twister? The jury's out, but in this episode, one thing's for sure: whether you're a weather buff or just in it for the flying cows, Twister makes you believe in the power of science, storms, and a good ol' fashioned summer blockbuster. SUGGESTED VIEWING Unfortunately, the only recommendation you're going to get here is the film itself! Don't worry, it's not a slog – Cary Elwes, Philip Seymour Hoffman, and a young Alan Ruck are a lot of fun. Buckle up for two hours and come back to us when you're ready to challenge colleagues to get scientific measurements as fast as you can. You know, the crazy stuff. And there's even a sequel, Twisters, in theaters now! Just note that we hadn't seen Twisters when we were researching this episode, so we're only discussing the original movie here, spoilers and all. FURTHER READING Want to get a little deeper into the science - on set, within the film, and in real life? We got you. Here are some references for all of those hoping to start jumping into tornadoes! Tornado Measuring  “What you're talking about, about gathering data, can really be looked at like a scientific principle. All the data that is possible to get, that's what you want to get. Ideally, you'd have satellites. You'd have ground base sensors.”  See also: Response Times and Intensity   TOTO  “Balls in a barrel in windy conditions wouldn't stay in a barrel. Most would probably stay in as it spinned around!” Barometric Pressure  “They have such low pressure… that homes basically explode. High pressure on the outside, low pressure on the inside, that makes an explosion occur.”  See also: Pressure Measurements and Intensity Distribution The VFX Challenge “Visual effects are the effects that are done after you're done shooting. Special effects, or sometimes referred to as practical effects, are done on set. The origin of this film starts with visual effects.”  WANT MORE FROM DOES IT FLY?Star Wars: The Acolyte just completed its inaugural season on Disney+. Bill gives Jo one day to try to get Dorothy flying, and his new fiancée, Melissa (Jami Gertz), gets dragged along for the ride. Zach and Chris discuss what would probably really happen if you were super close to an F5 tornado, what Dusty's (Phillip Seymour Hoffman) job on Jo's team is, who is sponsoring the "evil" team led by Cary Elwes, the various mishaps and injuries that happened on set and more. You can watch Twister currently on Max. In anticipation of the soon-to-be-released sequel, Anne and Ryan take a look back at 1996's original TWISTER starring Helen Hunt, Bill Paxton, Jami Gertz, Cary Elwes, Philip Seymour Hoffman, Lois Smith, Jeremy Davies, Todd Field and Alan Ruck. Director Jan de Bont's disaster spectacular follows a group of amateur storm chasers across Oklahoma, flirting dangerously close with tornados as old flames Jo (Hunt) and Bill (Paxton) flirt with each other. Michael Crichton and Anne-Marie Martin co-wrote TWISTER, which turned out to be the second highest grossing movie of 1996, stirring up $242 million at the box office. As Lee Isaac Chung's remake touches down this week, we look back at the original that started it all, along with diversions off path into The Bear, Jurassic Park, Outbreak, Nightcrawler, Los Angeles Plays Itself, Longlegs, Daddy Longlegs, and much much more!

In this episode of Overlapping Dialogue, we eagerly head full speed into the danger zone with two thrilling disaster pictures intent on traumatizing their characters and relentlessly entertaining their audiences: Black Sunday and Twister! But before we masochistically chase storms of both the physical and emotional variety, we stock up on a Blue Plate Special selection focusing on some new releases (In a Violent Nature) and filmmakers (Jane Schoenbrun, director of We're All Going to the World's Fair and I Saw the TV Glow) that hopefully suggest that maybe the spirit of cinema isn't dead after all. Eventually, we abandon all decorum and good sense by embracing the chaos of our double feature: join us as we delight in the unabashed 70s-ness of John Frankenheimer's B-movie epic (we also take the opportunity to induct not one but *two* members into our Hall of Fame, the Immune) and celebrate Jan de Bont's fabulous piece of 90s nonsense, filled with more of its era's character actors than any act of nature could every whisk away.
