This week's episode comes with a small technical disclaimer: we absolutely butchered the video file, so due to corrupted footage, this one is mostly audio-only with a few tiny video scraps sprinkled in. Apologies — although, to be fair, we've never looked better. But fear not, because the rugby chat survives. After the usual world-class nonsense, we dive into the URC, where the semi-finalists are locked in and rugby fans in New Zealand are, of course, absolutely buzzing with excitement. No irony there whatsoever. In all seriousness, though, the final four should make for some cracking clashes, and we break down what's coming. Then it's over to the final round of Super Rugby, where the Blues continued their late-season collapse by getting absolutely pumped by the Mooloo men of Waikato. Moana Pasifika delivered the feel-good story of the week, grabbing a win in what may sadly be their final game in existence. Meanwhile, the Crusaders — being the absolute bastards they are — appear to be coming right at exactly the right time. And who gets to face them next week in Christchurch, at their shiny new stadium? The Auckland Blues, currently riding a four-game losing streak. Lovely.Even better, thanks to the bizarre “lucky loser” setup, the Blues might still sneak through even if they lose. Because apparently even finals rugby doesn't need actual jeopardy anymore. We also touch on the Force, Waratahs, Highlanders, and look ahead to a weekend of knockout rugby, jump flights, jump sticks, and all the usual nonsense.Grab a beer and enjoy.
This week on the KOKO Show we are joined by our favourite Trans-Tasman talisman, a bloke that brings the vibes to Kiwi Rugby and used to go by the nickname Sops but now for obvious reasons now goes by Slops. It is the one and only Mr Lima Sopoaga. With Lima riding pillion on this hot throbbing hog of a podcast, the boys get stuck into the Super Rugby Playoff picture, they reminisce about the Highlanders win in 2015 and they talk about how the kiwis can find the motivation to win in absolutely anything. Plus, the lads have a little fun with a game we like to call ‘A Schooner Of…' where they have to name a beverage that best suits a certain rugby union superstar. Despite the fact that Swoop's Temu Cupboard is still shut for a few more weeks the content mastermind was hard at work with a new segment called ‘The Great Pie Off'. In this segment the boys taste test three pies from Aus and NZ to crown the ultimate thick crust king. So sit back, relax and insert your electronic chess cheating device of choice. Let this be a lesson to all those who argue against the simple truism that the market, most of the time, tends to be right. Moana Pasifika are in liquidation, the vote was held and the story ends here. The trouble is the taxpayer footed a lot of the bill and the money is gone, flushed down an ideological toilet. If the idea was such a sensational one, someone actually using their own money would have thought of it and further put it into practice. But the idea wasn't a sensational one. It was an artificial one propped up with other people's money. The most immediate alarm bells should be ringing in the NRL with their PNG venture. Having been handed millions by the Australian Government, players will live in a compound because it's too unsafe not to, and their pay will be artificially jacked up by tax treatment. Otherwise, if it wasn't, no one would want to play in PNG. Gosh I wonder why. The fact this harebrained idea has got as far as it has actually defies what is going on elsewhere in the sport, which is good. And what else it defies is belief. But back to Moana Pasifika, it was taxpayers' money through a series of very, very loosely connected organisations to sport i.e. a medical group who, if you join some dots, you can argue if you run around you might be a bit fitter and then not end up dying young. That sort of logic. Anyway, a medical group who ended up in charge of a professional sports team who didn't really attract a crowd and didn't really turn out to be that good. Which is one of the great ironies – young Pacific kids were supposed to see their heroes and be inspired to be fit and play sport. You know what inspires kids? Winners. You've got to win. And those kids could see their heroes anyway in the Crusaders, the Chiefs, the Hurricanes, the Highlanders, and the Blues. No one ever watched Lomu or Jones and wondered aloud to themselves, "wouldn't it be cool if they had their own, local team?" So it ends in liquidation, a bad idea, with easy money, not properly executed and ending in the poor house. In a world where successful sport is all around us, why would you try and gerrymander it in such an amateurish fashion? See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

The Chiefs are relishing in their victory against the Highlanders in last nights clash, ticking up vital points as the Super Rugby season slowly draws to a close. Their 42-12 win came at the expense of injured fullback Damian Mackenzie, who was knocked out in the second half after copping a boot to the chin, while the Highlanders lost Caleb Tangitau to a non-contact knee injury at the end of the match. The result shifts them back near the top of the ladder, putting them on track to host the playoffs as the end of the season draws near. The Chiefs have made it to the grand final three times in the past, but have yet to claim the title, and first five Josh Jacomb told Piney if they're lucky enough to reach the final then they'll have to address it, but also understand that it's in the past. “All we can focus on is what's in front of us.” LISTEN ABOVE See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Welcome back to another week of the Pick & Go. How did Fehi Fineanganofo not break the Super Rugby season try scoring record when the Hurricanes managed to put 50pts on Moana. Does he have the record on his mind or was he just unlucky. We look back at the results from the weekend and breakdown what went wrong with the Blues against the Crusaders. Jeff Wilson lets us know his criteria for getting into his All Blacks team, and what he wants to see more of if he was in charge. The Refs come under fire for their performance in the Highlanders game with our panel thinking that had the result not gone the Highlanders way there could have been problems. Finally, we've already picked Dave Rennie's team, but what about the new ABs captain. Do our panel all agree on who will be leading out the team for the first test of the year, or is there a surprise pick?

Finishing halves strong is a key focus for the Blues as Super Rugby Pacific approaches its business end. The Aucklanders conceded 26 of their 33 points to the Reds in the last 10 minutes of each half at Super Round, a week after conceding 21 points to the Highlanders in the same time frame. This weekend they're travelling across the bridge to take on Moana Pasifika at North Harbour Stadium. Super Round heads to the brand-new Te Kaha Stadium in Christchurch… and what a way to christen it. A full weekend of footy, packed stands, cracking atmosphere, and a proper festival feel — the kind of rugby showcase Super Rugby dreams about. The stadium? Unreal. The crowds? Even better. The results? Well… depends which side of the Tasman you're sitting on. The Kiwi teams absolutely ran the table. The Crusaders kicked things off by beating Waratahs, sending the Christchurch faithful home very happy in game one. The Blues nearly gave their fans heart failure but somehow scraped past the Queensland Reds in full squeaky-bum, extra-time chaos — thanks in part to a late penalty from Fraser McReight that went the wrong way. The Highlanders got the job done over Moana Pasifika, while the Chiefs handled the Fijian Drua. And the Hurricanes? Fehi Fineanganofo, WHAT A FREAK, too bad he's going to Newxastle. All in all — an absolute belter of a weekend, unless you're Australian… in which case, maybe skip this one. We crack a couple of beers, break down the action, butcher a few names, and talk a healthy amount of nonsense along the way. Grab a beer and enjoy

Welcome back to the Pick and Go podcast. Inspired by the amazing 6 Nations finale between England and France we have to ask: Was that the greatest game of rugby ever? Was it the perfect advertisement for the game going forward. Of course we bring it home, and talk about Super Rugby. The Crusaders hit and miss season continues with them winning against the Highlanders, but will this finally bring consistency to their season or will we see them stumble against Moana? We also have an NZ derby this week and we will preview the Highlanders vs Hurricanes game. AI makes it's final decision on our Super Rugby draft and there is a surprise loser in the comp.
Now, When people think of the British Army in the age of Napoleon, they usually picture the big stuff - Waterloo. Salamanca. Lines of redcoats smashing French columns. But that was only part of the story. Because the British Army of this era was not just fighting set-piece battles in Spain and Belgium. It was everywhere. Corsica. Egypt. The Low Countries. Strange little expeditions, half-forgotten raids, awkward amphibious landings, sieges, disasters, and operations that now sit in the shadows of the more famous campaigns. And some of them are extraordinary. In this episode, I'm joined once again by historian Steve Brown - he is a Goliath of British military history of the Napoleonic era and his books are incredible . Today he is digging into three neglected actions: the invasion of Corsica in 1794, the Ostend raid of 1798, and the Fraser expedition to Egypt in 1807. They may be obscure, but they are anything but dull. We've got Horatio Nelson losing the sight in an eye, British troops smashing their objectives and then being wrecked by the weather and Highlanders and Swiss soldiers ending up in Egyptian slave markets. So put the big battles out of your mind for a bit and grab a brew. I started off by asking Steve what made him want to research these obscure corners of the Great War against France. AJ's back for Part 2 — and it starts with the obvious question: how bad was the Wilson car park damage? ($300… and they basically gave up issuing tickets.)Then AJ tells the story of his return to Forsyth Barr Stadium years later, this time asked to suit up as William Wallace again for a halftime dance comp (with an iPad on the line)… except he stops at a student flat, turns a “warm-up” into a full bottle of vodka, and the whole mission spirals. From falling over at a crossing and losing his gear, to roaming the stadium yelling Braveheart quotes, to pulling himself into the marketing room and spewing on the costume, it's an absolute trainwreck. Then comes the infamous toilet incident - including the alleged wall-writing that AJ swears was a setup - and two cleaners reportedly running out screaming.Somehow he isn't banned, eventually gets welcomed back as a megaphone hype-man, and AJ says he's even been invited to MC the 2026 season - full circle.#propertrueyarn Hosted on Acast. AJ rolls in dusty after a big night and immediately delivers one of the loosest sports yarns you'll ever hear.Back in 2013 in Dunedin, AJ gets recruited to fire up the Highlanders student section (“The Zoo”) at Forsyth Barr Stadium - but instead of a normal mascot gig, he ends up in a full chicken suit, half cut, and armed with a “bag of gags”… including a black dildo that (somehow) becomes part of the entertainment. It goes exactly as you'd expect: the sponsor finds out, emails start flying, and AJ cops a life ban… until they change their mind and invite him back with one condition: no dildos. Then it levels up. Mid-season, a streaker hits the field and AJ - still dressed as a chicken — absolutely crunches him in a tackle that blows up across radio, news, and even lands on ESPN Top 10 plays. But the fame comes with a cost: a news outlet tries to unmask the mascot, forcing AJ into a choice that changes everything. From there it turns into a three-week Highlanders championship bender: packed pubs, the “Landers Army,” printing champions tees, trophy tours, a cooked Bedford bus with shithouse brakes, cops pulling them over, and a 21-day tear that ends in pneumonia… and a relationship ultimatum he definitely ignores. This is pure chaos, pure NZ rugby culture, and a proper true yarn from start to finish.#propertrueyarn Hosted on Acast. Since the time of it's opening over 100 years ago, Old Yankees Stadium housed the most prolific team in all of American team sport, and some of the games brightest stars. The Yankees did not have an auspicious beginning to their franchise. They were originally nicknamed the Highlanders, and from 1903-1915, they never won a World Series and they had losing seasons in 8 of 13 years. All that changes when the rebranded Yankees buy Babe Ruth from the Boston Red Sox in 1919. At this time they are sharing the Polo Grounds with their landlord, the New York Giants, and with the star-power of Ruth, they routinely outdraw their inter-city rivals in their own crib. Yankees owner Jacob Rupert realizes that his superstar slugger needs a stadium of his own. After scouting areas throughout New York City, Rupert decides to build his cathedral in the Bronx, just a long fly ball over the Harlem River from the Polo Grounds. After Babe hits the first home-run in Yankees Stadium History in a 4-1 win over the Red Sox, sports writer Fred Lieb dubbed the new structure, The House That Ruth Built; a moniker that would last throughout it's 85 year history. This week we chronicle the construction, history, moments and all the legendary players who called the stadium home, and the indelible mark they left behind in baseball history. #YankeesStadium #TheHouseThatRuthBuilt #JacobRuppert #BabeRuth #JohnMcGraw #DeathValley #FredLieb #GeorgeSteinbrenner #MonumentPark #OldTimersGame #BronxNewYork
It's the Second Doctor's second story, and he's already cross-dressing, bashing heads, and doing the worst German accent this side of Oktoberfest. The Highlanders is a story where the Doctor flails through post-regeneration weirdness while Ben, Polly, and proto-companion Jamie navigate the aftermath of Culloden and a plot to sell Scots into slavery. With violent slapstick, dodgy disguises, and an unexpected showdown on a boat, this might be the most violent—and historically faithful—Doctor Who story ever made. But does the Randomizer's gift of Jamie McCrimmon come wrapped in tartan triumph… or just more post-battle trauma?Give your own rating for The Highlanders on Spotify!Subscribe to our YouTube Channel and become a True Companion of the podcast to get new episodes before everyone else!Subscribe to our newsletter at pulltoopen.net for extended notes on The Highlanders.Support the podcast by becoming a patron of Pull To Open on Patreon. Please review Pull To Open on Apple Podcasts.Timeline:Intro 00:00:00Previously… 00:03:05Whomoji Challenge 00:07:07POLL to Open 00:13:23TL;DW 00:19:55Commentary: The Highlanders 00:22:26History Corner 00:47:20Four Questions to Doomsday 01:02:08What If the Evil Plot Had Succeeded? 01:05:13Where Is the Clara Splinter? 01:09:10Final Judgment 01:12:57Randomizer! 01:17:14Follow us on:TikTok: @pulltoopenInstagram: @pulltoopen63Facebook: @pulltoopen63X: @pulltoopen63Threads: @pulltoopen63Bluesky: @pulltoopenPlay Pull To Open BingoStory EssentialsSeason 4, Serial 4Story number: 30, per the The Pull To Open CodexWriters: Elwyn Jones, Gerry DavisDirector: Hugh DavidScript Editor: Gerry DavisProducer: Innes LloydAired 17 December 1966–7 January 1967Pull To Open: The HighlandersSeason 7Episode 2Hosts: Pete Pachal and Chris TaylorMusic: Martin West/Thinking Fish©️AnyWho Media LLC 2026Doctor Who ©️BBC 1963
