"TAKE MY HAND..." 2014 was a pretty big year for comic book movies. The Winter Soldier got the MCU back on track, Days of Future Past was an awesome movie written and directed by nobody, and The Amazing Spider-Man 2 certainly had a lot of money spent on it! What seemed up in the air at the time was the the tale of Peter Quill and his band of misfits, considered to be MCU's biggest gamble and first potential failure at the time. Little did we all know it'd become one of its biggest hits that would cement the franchise's inability to fail forever (or at least until after Endgame). Before we were spooky cinephiles, we were sugar-starved gremlins in plastic masks that smelled like burning tires. Childhood Halloween was pure chaos: sprinting across lawns, breathing through a pinhole mask, and trying not to barf after inhaling three mini Snickers in a row. Then came teenage Halloween - suddenly we were “too cool” for trick-or-treating, yet somehow still roaming the streets, sneaking into haunted houses, and ending up at a bonfire wearing eyeliner we pretended wasn't eyeliner. Now as adults, we pour way too much effort into costumes, buy candy no kids ever show up for, and stay up way past our bedtime watching movies we used to have to sneak. Turns out we never outgrew Halloween - we just swapped the plastic fangs for spirit gum and the pillowcase for a tote bag with bats on it.

If you want to know which artist is having the biggest year in museums, there is one name that springs to mind for me: Cara Romero. Since her first big breakout a decade ago at Santa Fe Indian Market, Romero has been steadily growing in influence. If you don't know it yet, her photo-based art is full of color, drama, and detail. It's sometimes funny, sometimes fantastical. And it moves between a variety of themes that are extremely important in museums right now: Indigenous identities, environmental concern, science fiction, and staged or set-up photography, to name a few. For that reason, Romero finds her work part of many surveys and touring exhibitions at the moment. She had this year a mid-career retrospective at the Hood Museum at Dartmouth, “Cara Romero: Panûpünüwügai,” meaning “Living Light.” She also has a two-person spotlight with her husband, the artist Diego Romero, called “Tales of Future Past,” currently at the Crocker art Museum in Sacramento. For someone who has risen to the very top of the museum circuit, Romero has had a unique career path and story.
