Tom Hanks and Julia Roberts bring the star power, but is that enough to make Larry Crowne memorable? In this episode of Forgotten Cinema, the Mikes head back to 2011 for a charming-but-lightweight romantic dramedy written and directed by Hanks himself. It plays like cinematic comfort food—pleasant while you're watching, but not much to chew on afterward.Mike Butler and Mike Field talk about the film's easygoing vibe, Hanks' likable lead performance, and the strange sense that nothing ever really happens. Is that the point? Or is Larry Crowne just too laid-back for its own good? Plus, shoutout to a surprisingly stacked supporting cast—including Cedric the Entertainer, Taraji P. Henson, and Bryan Cranston. So, grab your popcorn and soda, please notice the exits to the left and right of you and settle down for Forgotten Cinema. Dan & Manny welcome Jen & P.T. from The Long Take Review to put Jim Henson's classic Labyrinth to the ultimate test—THE NOSTALGIA TEST! “We might spend the most time on fart jokes.” -P.T. Much like the topic of this episode, the conversation is a collection of twists, turns, deceptions, off-color fart jokes, confusion about David Bowie's tights, and hallucinations. The gang goes into their love of Henson's use practical effects, they talk about all the memorable characters, the film's lasting impact on cinematic history, and did we say fart jokes. They also touch on the announcement of a sequel directed by Robert Eggers, is Gremlins 2 better than the OG, the influence of David Bowie's performance, and the broader legacy of Jim Henson's creations like The Dark Crystal. "Everything I've done, I've done for you. I move the stars for no one.” After the release of THE DARK CRYSTAL — and its critical and commercial failure — Jim Henson and his collaborator on that project, illustrator Brian Froud, went back to the drawing board for their next ambitious fantasy project. Utilizing the lessons that they'd learned on that film, they looked to craft another story with the same amount of imagination, but with more humor, more heart, more music and… more humans. The resulting film, LABYRINTH, was not much more well-received at the time of its release, but like its predecessor, it's gone on to become a beloved film, one that's now considered a classic and one of the creative pinnacles of Henson's career. In this episode, we tell down the full story of how LABYRINTH was made, from its original concept, to the dozens of script drafts that it went through during its development, to the casting of David Bowie and Jennifer Connelly (and the actors who almost got the parts instead), and all of the innovative puppetry and creature creation that brought it to life. Mountain top experiences are great. But what happens when you hit rock bottom? Like Peter in Matthew 26:69-75 after he denied Jesus three times. Are there lessons we can learn from Peter's lowest point? Henson draws from Peter's rock bottom experience and shares implications for all disciples of Jesus Christ.

As I delve into the intricacies of Project 2025, it becomes clear that this initiative is more than just a policy blueprint; it's a comprehensive vision for transforming the American government, rooted in conservative ideals and backed by a formidable array of scholars and policy experts.Project 2025, spearheaded by the Heritage Foundation, is the latest in a series of "Mandate for Leadership" guides that have been influential in shaping conservative policy agendas since Ronald Reagan's presidency. This 900-page document is the culmination of efforts by over 400 scholars and policy experts from across the conservative movement, aiming to provide a detailed roadmap for a future conservative administration[3][4].At its core, Project 2025 is about centralizing power and reshaping the federal government to align more closely with conservative values. One of the most contentious aspects is the proposal to significantly expand presidential powers, particularly through the reissuance of Trump's Schedule F executive order. This measure would allow the president to dismiss federal employees deemed 'non-performing' or insufficiently loyal, potentially targeting the vast majority of career civil servants who are crucial for the continuity and integrity of government operations[1][2].The plan also outlines drastic changes to federal agencies, such as the elimination of the Department of Education and the de-weaponization of the Federal Government by increasing accountability and oversight of the FBI and DOJ. For instance, Project 2025 suggests transferring the custody of immigrant children from Health and Human Services (HHS) to the Department of Homeland Security (DHS), a move that critics argue would prioritize enforcement over welfare and exacerbate the safety and psychological well-being risks for vulnerable immigrant children[1][3].In the realm of reproductive rights, Project 2025 proposes stringent restrictions on abortion, going even further than some of the policies advocated by former President Donald Trump. Recent legal battles, such as the case involving the FDA's approval of mifepristone, serve as a precursor to how these policies might be implemented. Despite the Supreme Court dismissing the case on procedural grounds, it set a precedent for future legal challenges aimed at limiting access to abortion medication[1].The project's ambition extends to other critical areas, including education and energy policy. It advocates for moving control and funding of education from federal bureaucrats to parents and state and local governments, and for unleashing American energy production to reduce energy prices. Additionally, it proposes banning biological males from competing in women's sports, reflecting a broader push to redefine social and cultural norms[3].One of the most striking aspects of Project 2025 is its detailed plan for the first 180 days of a new administration. This "180-Day Playbook" is designed to ensure quick implementation of key policies, from securing the border and finishing the wall to cutting government spending and reducing inflation. This rapid-fire approach is meant to capitalize on the initial momentum of a new presidency, much like Reagan's successful implementation of 60% of the original "Mandate for Leadership" recommendations in his first year[3][4].The implications of these policies are far-reaching and have sparked significant concern among critics. Experts warn that Project 2025's recommendations could endanger democratic institutions, dismantle civil liberties, and concentrate presidential power in ways that are unprecedented in modern American history. For example, the plan's proposals for media and technology policies, including reducing NPR funding and increasing agency accountability while decreasing wasteful spending, have been seen as threats to the independence of public broadcasting and the free flow of information[4].Despite former President Trump's public denials of any affiliation with Project 2025, there is a clear overlap between the project's goals and his own policy agenda. Trump has called for similar cuts to federal agencies and has advocated for stricter immigration policies, aligning with key tenets of the project. However, Trump has also distanced himself from some of the more extreme measures outlined in the document, such as the comprehensive restrictions on abortion[2].The response from Democrats has been vehement, with the Biden campaign and other Democratic figures highlighting the dangers of Project 2025 as a way to attack Trump's policies. "It's not a secret: Look it up. They are attacking our most vulnerable citizens. The Project 2025 plan is not a game," warned actress Taraji P. Henson during the BET awards, reflecting the broader concern that this plan represents a significant threat to marginalized groups and democratic norms[2].As we look ahead, the implementation of Project 2025's policies, should they come to fruition, will be a defining moment for American governance. The project's proponents see it as a necessary correction to what they perceive as a bloated and inefficient federal government, while critics view it as a radical and risky agenda that could undermine the very foundations of American democracy. In the coming months, as the 2025 presidential transition looms, the nation will be watching closely to see how these policies are received and implemented. Will Project 2025's vision of a more centralized, conservative government become a reality, or will it face significant resistance from various stakeholders? The answer to this question will have profound implications for the future of American politics and the lives of its citizens.
"Hey, I tell you what is. Big city, hmm? Live, work, huh? But not city only. Only peoples. Peoples is peoples. No is buildings. Is tomatoes, huh? Is peoples, is dancing, is music, is potatoes. So, peoples is peoples. Okay?" With his dream project THE DARK CRYSTAL taking so much of his time and energy, Jim Henson was content to slim down his role on the next Muppet project and allow his right hand man Frank Oz to take the helm in his first solo directing feature. THE MUPPETS TAKE MANHATTAN would be the last Muppet film that Henson would be involved with before his untimely passing a few years later, but the film's legacy would have a lasting impact on his company, especially in the form of the Muppet Babies, who'd get their own Saturday morning cartoon, inspired by a sequence from the film. And let's not forget the media circus that surrounded the wedding of the century! In this episode, we give all the details on how the film came to be, from its concept, multiple script changes, release and beyond! Want to support the show? "Another world, another time, in the age of wonder. A thousand years ago, this land was green and good - until the Crystal cracked." After the completion of THE GREAT MUPPET CAPER, Jim Henson focused on a project that had been in the works for years — its earliest seeds were planted well before even The Muppet Show had begun production — an ambitious fantasy film made in collaboration with renowned illustrator Brian Froud. That film, THE DARK CRYSTAL, would be Jim's most ambitious project to date. It's a film that pushed the limits of what puppetry was capable of, essentially creating an entirely new artform that would change the landscape of movie special effects for years to come. But it was also a great artistic and financial risk for Henson. When it was released, audiences didn't quite know what to think of it, but the film has become to be considered a bonafide classic in the decades since. In this episode, we'll detail the years long process to bring THE DARK CRYSTAL to the screen. D&D LIVE FOR CHARITY, Hosted by Mr. Todd A. It's frustrating to feel like you're spinning your wheels, stuck in the same routines while time slips away. Distractions pile up, bad habits take root, and before you know it, another year has passed without real progress. The problem isn't a lack of potential—it's the absence of intentional action. Breaking free from mediocrity doesn't require a massive overhaul overnight; it starts with small, deliberate steps toward something meaningful. When you stop waiting for the perfect moment and start taking control, life shifts from something that happens to you into something you actively shape. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9UwN_9gEj3Y Dennis J. “Life's like a movie. Write your own ending. Keep believing. Keep pretending.” With The Muppet Show, Jim Henson had reached the goal that he'd set for himself many years before: He'd managed to get his beloved Muppets their own weekly television series. Not only that, but it was an enormous success, quickly becoming one of the most watched television shows in the entire world. The Muppets were as big as they'd ever been. The next step seemed logical: The Muppets were going to Hollywood. Getting them there wouldn't be as straight-forward as you might think. After all, what Jim was proposing to do — bringing the Muppets out of their highly-controlled sutdio environment and into the real world — was unprecedented, and there was a question as to whether it'd work at all. In the latest episode of Jim Henson: Heart Felt, we're telling the complete story of just how Henson pulled it off, and how he created one of the most beloved films of the 1970s, one that still resonated with audiences nearly half a century later. Kim Marsh and Alice Nagle from Fetch the Smelling Salts podcast join Flixwatcher to review Kim's choice Hidden Figures. Hidden Figures (2016) is loosely based on the non-fiction book of the same name by Margot Lee Shetterly. It tells the incredible true story of the biographies of three African-American women who worked as computers to solve problems for engineers and others at NASA. Directed by Theodore Melfi it stars Taraji P. Henson as Katherine Goble Johnson, Octavia Spencer as Dorothy Vaughan and Janelle Monáe as Mary Jackson. Other real life character include Mahershala Ali as Jim Johnson, who marries Katherine and Glen Powell as astronaut John Glenn. In fictional roles it also stars Kevin Costner, Kirsten Dunst and Jim Parsons. Hidden Figures shines a light on the impressive work done by women of colour in behind the scenes roles. However, there are a number of fictional scenes and several inaccuracies, some that lean into the white saviour trope. Recommendability scores were very favourable despite the historical inaccuracies. Fairly solid scores across the remaining categories give a very respectable score of 4.34 overall. We continue to celebrate afro-centric films during Black History with a director focus on John Singleton films; Poetic Justice/Higher Learning/Baby Boy!Poetic Justice is a 1993 American romantic drama film written and directed by John Singleton, and starring Janet Jackson, Tupac Shakur, Regina King, and Joe Torry. It follows a poet (Jackson) mourning the loss of her boyfriend from gun violence. She goes on a road trip from South Los Angeles to Oakland on a mail truck, along with her friend (King) and a postal worker (Shakur), in order to deal with depression.Following the success of his debut film, Boyz n the Hood, Singleton wanted to make a film that would give a voice to young African-American women. Jada Pinkett, Lisa Bonet, Monica Calhoun, and many other popular actresses auditioned for the role of Justice, though Singleton knew from the script's draft that the role was solely intended for Jackson. Filming took place from April 11 to July 4, 1992.Poetic Justice was released in the United States on July 23, 1993. The film received mixed reviews from critics, who criticized the screenplay though praised Jackson and Shakur's performances and chemistry. It reached No. 1 in the box office its opening weekend, grossing $11,728,455. It eventually grossed a total of $27,515,786. Jackson received Academy Award and Golden Globe nominations for Best Original Song for "Again", which also reached number one on the Billboard Hot 100. Janet won 2 MTV Movie awards for her role in the film, including Most Desirable Female. The film has developed a cult following, especially for the chemistry between Jackson and Shakur.Higher Learning is a 1995 American crime drama film written and directed by John Singleton and starring an ensemble cast. The film follows the changing lives of three incoming freshmen at the fictional Columbus University: Malik Williams (Omar Epps), a track star who struggles with academics; Kristen Connor (Kristy Swanson), a shy and naive girl; and Remy (Michael Rapaport), a lonely and confused man seemingly out of place in his new environment. The film also featured Tyra Banks' first performance in a theatrical film. Laurence Fishburne won an NAACP Image Award for "Outstanding Supporting Actor in a Motion Picture"; Ice Cube was also nominated for the award. This was the last film appearance of Dedrick D. Gobert, who was shot dead in 1994 prior to the film's release. The exterior shots and outdoor scenes were shot on the campus of University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA) while the interiors were shot at Sony Pictures Studios.aby Boy is a 2001 American coming-of-age hood drama film directed, written and produced by John Singleton, and starring Tyrese Gibson, Snoop Dogg, Ving Rhames, Omar Gooding, A.J. Johnson and Taraji P. Henson.[5] The film follows Joseph "Jody" Summers (Gibson), a 20-year-old bike mechanic as he lives and learns in his everyday life in the hood of Los Angeles. The film was originally written with rapper-actor Tupac Shakur in mind to play Jody; Shakur had previously worked with Singleton on Poetic Justice. However, following Shakur's murder in 1996, Singleton decided to replace Shakur with R&B artist Tyrese Gibson. Additionally, the role of Rodney was originally written for Ice Cube, who had worked with Singleton on Boyz n the Hood and Higher Learning. The film marked the feature acting debut of Gibson and provided Henson with her first prominent role.Released in the United States on June 27, 2001, the film received predominantly positive reviews from critics and audiences, with many deeming it as Singleton's best film since Boyz n the Hood. The film is also the final feature film written by Singleton as he did not write any of his later feature-length directorial projects before his death in April 2019.Disclaimer: The following may contain offensive language, adult humor, and/or content that some viewers may find offensive – The views and opinions expressed by any one speaker does not explicitly or necessarily reflect or represent those of Mark Radulich or W2M Network.Mark Radulich and his wacky podcast on all the things:https://linktr.ee/markkind76alsohttps://www.teepublic.com/user/radulich-in-broadcasting-networkFB Messenger: Mark Radulich LCSWTiktok: @markradulichtwitter: @MarkRadulichInstagram: markkind76RIBN Album Playlist: https://suno.com/playlist/91d704c9-d1ea-45a0-9ffe-5069497bad59
