Tyler Perry's Straw has a misleading title — because it isn't a straw that breaks the camel's back in the film about a single mom (Taraji P. Henson) driven to extremes, but an absolutely nightmarish event that is only revealed in the film's insane final act.In this episode, Aaron, Keith and Tim talk about whether the movie takes place in hell, great movie twists and why they work — from Fight Club to The Sixth Sense — and the correct way to pronounce San Pedro. We wrap up by praising Tubi's Flew'd Out and the works of fantasy author Brandon Sanderson. In today’s episode of The Rickey Smiley Morning Show Podcast, we dig into the anti-ICE protests in Los Angeles, where streets leading to federal buildings were blocked as demonstrators reacted to recent ICE raids. The federal response included deploying over 4,000 National Guard troops and 700 Marines—a move Governor Newsom called an abuse of power. Despite widespread arrests and violence, many protesters emphasize the militarized response fueled instead of quelled the unrest. We also revisit the 2025 BET Awards with reporter “Gary with the Tea,” who highlights standout moments like Mariah Carey’s nightclub-themed set, Leon Thomas’s breakthrough win, and the emotional Ultimate Icon tribute to Jamie Foxx featuring Stevie Wonder. Lastly, Taraji P. Henson sets the record straight on rumors about a feud with Oprah—labeling the claims “disrespectful” and explaining they stemmed from orchestrated attempts to sabotage The Color Purple, while reaffirming their mutual support. For this episode, Danny is privileged to be joined by actor, puppeteer, co-founder of the London School of Puppetry and president of the British Puppet Guild - Ronnie Le Drew. Ronnie has worked in theatre, television and film for many decades. His movie credits include The Naked Runner with Frank Sinatra, Little Shop of Horrors, The Muppets Treasure Island, Labyrinth and the live-action Beauty and the Beast. To people in the know however, he is most famous for Zippy from Rainbow, which is indisputably the greatest TV show in history and Danny'll fight anyone who disagrees with that. If you want to gain an insight into why puppets engage adults as well as kids on a level that no other form of entertainment does and how this ancient performance art continues to evolve to appeal to new audiences, listen in. Some of the places Ronnie performs are sure to surprise you. If you can´t get enough of these podcasts, head to https://www.patreon.com/DannyHurst to access my exclusive, member-only, fun-filled and fact-packed history-related videos. KEY TAKEAWAYS Ronnie learned basic puppet skills playing with toy puppets. Ronnie was small and couldn´t sing or dance but wanted to work in theatre, so he decided to fulfill his dream through puppetry. When Ronnie performs with Muffin The Mule, he borrows his granddaughter´s puppet. In some countries you can study puppetry at degree level. Punch and Judy performances continue and are evolving. TV fed Ronnie´s career rather than ruined it. Ronnie was Tom Hanks's body double...not in the way you think. Ronnie is now very popular at Comic Con. Throughout the decades Rainbow has remained popular and as a result Ronnie has appeared with Zippy in some very unexpected ways e.g. Late-night university parties, which attracted large crowds of students. The rude episode of Rainbow was filmed in about 3 minutes. BEST MOMENTS "All 5 of the audience had crept out. They were bored out of their minds, but I was having a ball." "I got a phone call from Henson saying we would like to use me on Labyrinth." "I was Tom Hanks's body double." “We used to lark around – Bungle, Zippy, and George - in bed...very naughty." Henson, Empire, Hidden Figures) to China, he becomes the target of a ruthless kung fu academy bully, Cheng. Desperate, Dre finds an unlikely mentor in maintenance man Mr. Han (Jackie Chan, Rush Hour, Drunken Master), who teaches him discipline and self-defense through everyday chores—painting railings, polishing floors, and balancing on stairs—that prepare him for the ultimate test. Our hosts break down every key moment—from Dre's inciting fight on the basketball court to film's astute spin on Mr. Miyagi's iconic “wax on, wax off” training technique with Han's "jacket-on, jacket-off" training mantra + the heart-pounding showdown at the Beijing Martial Arts Tournament, where the crane stance and the decisive crane kick subversion deliver one of the most celebrated finishes in modern martial-arts cinema. “Please watch out for each other and love and forgive everybody. It's a good life, enjoy it.” Over the course of this series, we've come to not only love Jim Henson's work even more than we already did, but we've come to love and appreciate the person that Jim Henson was. In a cynical world, Henson was a beacon of hope and optimism and he spent his entire career — his entire life — trying to share that optimism with the world at large. While he was disappointed with the reception of his labor of love LABYRINTH, Henson didn't walk away from the project defeated. Instead, he made the decision to channel his energy into new projects, fueled by his unwavering optimism. Jim Henson, in the last years of his too-short life, did everything he could to make the world a better place through his art. In this, the final episode Jim Henson: Heart Felt, we want to discuss Jim's legacy beyond LABYRINTH. From Fraggle Rock to The StoryTeller to MuppetVision 3D and beyond, Jim worked tirelessly with every moment he had on this earth to bring joy to everyone he came in contact with, whether it was in-person or through a television or movie screen. As we say goodbye to Jim Henson and recount his final years — and his final days — we can't help but feel a little bit sad. But we also feel a sense of gratitude that we got to exist on the same planet as Henson and that we'll be able to experience the magic he brought to us until the end of time. Thank you, our listeners, for going on this journey with us. We promise we'll be back to talking about weird cult movies very soon. Want to support the show? Host Nicole reflects on the 2025 Met Gala as a powerful celebration of Black culture, creativity, and history. She critiques the exclusion of key Black voices, calls out performative allyship, and highlights symbolic fashion moments from stars like Taraji P. Henson and Jeremy Pope. Despite systemic issues, the Gala broke fundraising records—thanks largely to Black talent—proving that Black culture is both influential and profitable."Slaves to Fashion"-Monica Miller
Tom Hanks and Julia Roberts bring the star power, but is that enough to make Larry Crowne memorable? In this episode of Forgotten Cinema, the Mikes head back to 2011 for a charming-but-lightweight romantic dramedy written and directed by Hanks himself. It plays like cinematic comfort food—pleasant while you're watching, but not much to chew on afterward.Mike Butler and Mike Field talk about the film's easygoing vibe, Hanks' likable lead performance, and the strange sense that nothing ever really happens. Is that the point? Or is Larry Crowne just too laid-back for its own good? Plus, shoutout to a surprisingly stacked supporting cast—including Cedric the Entertainer, Taraji P. Henson, and Bryan Cranston. So, grab your popcorn and soda, please notice the exits to the left and right of you and settle down for Forgotten Cinema. Dan & Manny welcome Jen & P.T. from The Long Take Review to put Jim Henson's classic Labyrinth to the ultimate test—THE NOSTALGIA TEST! “We might spend the most time on fart jokes.” -P.T. Much like the topic of this episode, the conversation is a collection of twists, turns, deceptions, off-color fart jokes, confusion about David Bowie's tights, and hallucinations. The gang goes into their love of Henson's use practical effects, they talk about all the memorable characters, the film's lasting impact on cinematic history, and did we say fart jokes. They also touch on the announcement of a sequel directed by Robert Eggers, is Gremlins 2 better than the OG, the influence of David Bowie's performance, and the broader legacy of Jim Henson's creations like The Dark Crystal. It wouldn't be an episode of The Nostalgia Test without all the tangents, memories of Matt Antoniou, and Manny ignoring Dan trying to end the podcast, though he had help from P.T.
