In this age of AI, we are faced with the dilemma of the Total Machine Takeover. Yet, once a year, we willingly hand over our autonomy to he who is named Skynet to decide which 4 Anime we will or won't be giving the AF Seal of Approval. The Die are cast. The Wheel spun. The Journey begins anew. Every effort is made to keep spoilers to a minimum. (The only exception being older titles)
This week's episode is a very real-life-heavy one, with winter storms, family travel chaos, sick kids, and a surprising amount of ice setting the tone. From a memorable Nashville trip and pop culture check-ins to a passionate Star Trek defense and thoughtful sci-fi discussion, we settle in for a conversational episode that leans into where everyone's headspace actually is this week. REAL LIFE Devon braved a winter storm while hosting family, with Nashville serving as the central meetup point. The group stayed in a four-story Airbnb packed with fun things to do, except for the roof, which was completely covered in ice. There was ice everywhere. This led to discussions about boil notices, what they actually mean, and whether a boil notice might have contributed to a house full of sick kids. Despite the chaos, Devon highlights the Grand Ole Opry and the Gaylord Resort, noting that it would be awesome to visit the resort someday without kids. Steven revisits Cowboy Bebop, comparing the anime to the Netflix live-action adaptation and confirming once again that the live-action version was a huge miss. On the positive side, A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms has been a solid and enjoyable watch. Ben declares that Starfleet Academy episode 1x04 is peak Star Trek and insists that listeners should watch episode four and only episode four if nothing else. He recaps the episode, focusing on Federation and Klingon ethics around survival and why this episode delivers exactly what he wants from Star Trek. This Facebook post sparked part of the discussion: https://www.facebook.com/28601265/posts/pfbid02D298Wi45gN3cZd8S4GMS7ypkdj7ja5zsHSQKwahiZ2eVQzyV7sApm6Fu46Z8X9fFl/?app=fbl Ben also continues praising the Star Trek comic The Last Starship, describing it as noir, heartbreaking, and packed with big ideas, including Earth seceding from the Federation, a clone of Kirk, and a Borg Queen engineer. FUTURE OR NOW None this week. Too much real life. Too much talky talky. BOOK CLUB This week's story: The Song of a Non-Human Intelligence By Mical Garcia (Jan 12, 2026) https://strangehorizons.com/wordpress/fiction/the-song-of-a-non-human-intelligence/ The story explores communication between cetacean intelligences and the concept of hope, defined as waiting until home feels safe again. Ben and Devon both enjoyed the story, with Devon wanting more. Steven found it a bit dry but still appreciated the world-building. Devon also discusses Children of Time by Adrian Tchaikovsky, connecting its themes to the episode's discussion of non-human intelligence. Next week's story: The Orchard Village Catalog By Parker Peevyhouse https://strangehorizons.com/wordpress/fiction/the-orchard-village-catalog/ Steven recommends this video by Joe Scott: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=J1FMViCd6I4 Thanks for listening, and be sure to check out the links in the show notes for this week's stories and videos—we'll be back next episode with a new book club read and, hopefully, a little less ice.

Welcome back to The Shonen Shojo ShoShow, where anime rants, side quests, and deep fandom feelings collide. In this episode, Pino Mack and Pauly kick things off with classic nonsense (ramen metaphors included), shout out international listeners, and immediately derail into a nostalgic side quest about MTV, 90s jingles, and lost music video culture. From there, things get real.⚠️ SPOILERS AHEAD ⚠️Pino unloads long-simmering frustrations about the My Hero Academia epilogue, from Deku's ending to dropped plot threads, Iron Man energy, and romances that never paid off. We talk epilogues, endings, and why “predictable” doesn't always mean “satisfying.”We also mix in:

Top Gun with Mecha and reckless fighter pilots, involved in a love triangle involving a 4th party AI, ‘plus' the kitchen sink. Macross Plus is an anime film from 1995 based on the 4 part miniseries cartoon of the same name. This is a continuation from the Macross Franchise also called Robotech from the 80's.This Shōji Kawamori directed film is set in the year 2040, 3 decades after the previous situation with the war between Humans and the Zentradi Aliens. The three main characters are Isamu, Guld, and Myung who were high school friends on a planet called Eden, but after an incident that happened years prior they went their separate ways. Years later they met back up again, as the two boys were now highly respected fighter jocks who flew experimental mechas (hybrid robot/jets.) Also back on the scene is Myung who was the prior love interest of the men, and despite their friendship from years prior, there is now a hostility that exists between them. Through the film they are constantly fighting with each other, but a much worse threat looms on the horizon and that is a new AI model that is set to take over the masses through pop culture and its deceptive ways. Little did the boys know, but Myung was actually the one who was using her own experiences to train this new artificial intelligence. Sharon Apple the AI begins to have plans of her own and the three come together to stop it.This film had some very good reviews on IMDB and has a bit of a cult following. The four of us all have a different take on the film, when it comes to the plot, the music, and the animation. There seems to be many references to other films, one being that the AI might be based on the actor Sharon Stone.By the Creators of Cowboy Bebop and written by Keiko Nobumoto, Takumi Yamazaki as Isamu, Unshou Ishizuka as Guld, Rica Fukami as Myung, Megumi Hayashibara as Lucy McMillan, and Mako Hyōdō as Sharon Apple. (Spoiler Section Length - 7min 5sec)Anime movies attached to shows can be a mixed bag, often struggling to stretch characters and concepts out into a feature-length format, and struggling even further to work as stand-alone films. While many anime movies struggle because the anime they're spun off from are adaptations of manga, and thus they cannot contradict canon, the Cowboy Bebop movie doesn't have that particular problem. All it has to do is slot into its parent series, which was already very episodic in nature. The result is a movie that, to fans of the series, just feels like an extra-long episode (complimentary), but with a much higher budget. Does it still hold up today, if your memories of the original series are hazy at best? Listen to find out!

What happens when samurai sword fights meet hip hop beats? In 2004, director Shinichirō Watanabe followed up Cowboy Bebop with Samurai Champloo: a wild mashup of Edo-era Japan, breakdance-inspired swordplay, and lo-fi counterculture. Two decades later, Champloo still feels fresh, and its influence now echoes in Ghost of Yōtei with the brand-new Watanabe Mode, blending lo-fi hip hop into your samurai journey. MonteCristo and DoA dive into how Samurai Champloo revolutionized anime, the genius of Nujabes' soundtrack, and why this series still matters for both anime and gaming. And as is tradition in gun fu movies, we decided to dual-wield two of the most renowned Hong Kong action movies of all time: John Woo's "The Killer" (1989) and John Woo's "Hard Boiled" (1992). That's right! Double the Woo for all of you!In addition to discussing birds and bromances, the hosts also talk about: Big Chungus; if Taylor Swift prefers Sheetz or Wawa; multiverse existential crises; Hong Kong in the 1990s; Cowboy Bebop; and afterlife injuries. durée : 00:54:15 - Blockbusters - par : Frédérick Sigrist - "Lazarus", "Space Dandy", "Samouraï Champloo"… Les œuvres de Shin'Ichiro Watanabe ont toutes un charme unique, mais aucune n'a autant résonné que "Cowboy Bebop" ! Shinichiro Watanabe is considered an auteur of anime because of his evocative use of music, exploration of mature themes, and blending of multiple genres. Ionatan and Ravi discuss his career by picking their top five Shinichiro Watanabe anime, from classics such as 'Cowboy Bebop' and 'Samurai Champloo' to more recent productions like 'Kids on the Slope' and 'Space Dandy.'
If you watched the janky oddity that is the 2017 Death Note movie or the Scarlet Johansson Ghost in the Shell that also came out in 2017 (what a tough year) this is the episode for you! Anime is massive and yet a successful live action adaptation of one that's as good as the source material seems harder to find than the one piece treasure (With One Piece being the exception that breaks the rule) . Jake explains why this is and we all analyze some of the attempts including Cowboy Bebop, the insanity that is the Wachowski's Speed Racer, and yes even Dragon Ball Evolution because we love entertaining you more than we respect ourselves.Want even more Nerd of Mouth? What do anime, jazz trombone, and a sold-out national tour have in common? In this episode of Making It with Chris G, we sit down with musician, creative director, and founder of Cowboy Bebop Live — Corey Paul — for a high-energy, deeply honest conversation about the real journey of building a music career from scratch.
Send us a textStrap in for a deep dive into the cosmos as we explore the final thirteen episodes of Cowboy Bebop, one of anime's most celebrated masterpieces. What begins as casual appreciation quickly transforms into profound admiration as we unpack the layers of this 1998 phenomenon that continues to captivate audiences decades later. The second half of Cowboy Bebop reveals the complex pasts of our favorite space cowboys. Faye Valentine emerges as a woman literally out of time—cryogenically frozen and awakened 50 years later with no memory of her former life. Jet Black's story unfolds in "Black Dog Serenade," showing us the incorruptible cop whose moral compass never wavers despite betrayal. And of course, Spike Spiegel's mysterious connection to the Red Dragon Syndicate and his lost love Julia finally comes to its inevitable, bittersweet conclusion.Beyond the captivating narratives, we marvel at the show's production values. Taking approximately two years to animate at a staggering cost of $300,000-$500,000 per episode (considerably higher than its contemporaries), Cowboy Bebop represents the pinnacle of hand-drawn animation. Each frame feels deliberate, each scene meticulously crafted without the shortcuts common in animated series of that era. The legendary soundtrack by Yoko Kanno doesn't merely accompany the action—it becomes an essential character in the storytelling, with jazz compositions that somehow feel both period-appropriate and timeless.Whether you're a longtime fan or have yet to experience this groundbreaking series, our discussion highlights why Cowboy Bebop transcends the anime genre to stand as one of television's greatest achievements. So pour yourself something smooth, hit play, and see why you're gonna carry that weight. And after you've listened, we'd love to hear your thoughts on which character's story resonated most with you.Twitter handles:Project Geekology: https://twitter.com/pgeekologyAnthony's Twitter: https://twitter.com/odysseyswowDakota's Twitter: https://twitter.com/geekritique_dakInstagram:https://instagram.com/projectgeekology?igshid=1v0sits7ipq9yYouTube:https://www.youtube.com/@projectgeekologyGeekritique (Dakota):https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCBwciIqOoHwIx_uXtYTSEbASupport the show
Send us a textStrap in for a jazz-fueled journey through space as we explore the first half of the legendary anime Cowboy Bebop. This genre-defining series from 1998 follows a ragtag crew of bounty hunters aboard their ship, the Bebop, traveling through a post-apocalyptic solar system where humanity has spread to the stars. What sets Cowboy Bebop apart from its contemporaries? Nearly everything. From its meticulously crafted animation with no recycled scenes to its revolutionary jazz soundtrack by Yoko Kanno and The Seatbelts, this show broke every convention of what anime could be. We dive deep into the noir aesthetics, the complex character dynamics between Spike, Jet, Faye, Edward and Ein, and the show's unique approach to storytelling that relies heavily on vibes and atmosphere rather than exposition. The first 13 episodes introduce us to a world that feels lived-in and believable, where technology seems plausible yet fantastical. We explore standout moments like the breathtaking church scene in "Ballad of Fallen Angels" and the horror-inspired bottle episode "Toys in the Attic." Beyond just analyzing the show itself, we discuss Cowboy Bebop's massive influence on western media, particularly its striking similarities to Joss Whedon's Firefly, demonstrating how this anime transcended cultural boundaries to impact science fiction storytelling worldwide.Whether you're rewatching this classic or experiencing it for the first time alongside our hosts, you'll discover new details and perspectives on what makes Cowboy Bebop one of the most enduring and beloved anime series of all time.
