https://youtu.be/nwU5booPyvAMatt and Sean talk about mistaking fear for ferocity, and how to recognize it. Star Trek Discovery has a bit of a misstep with this episode, but there still may be a nugget of a good episode hidden inside. Anthony and Laurie start with the news about what to expect at New York Comic Con this year and the expansion of Paramount+ into Japan and Switzerland. They pivot to Jonathan Frakes’ comments about Star Trek: Discovery‘s final season having “new energy” and talk about how polarizing the show is for fans. Then it’s on to Ed Speleers’ description of filming that Picard closing scene with John de Lancie, the upcoming Strange New Worlds season 2 DVD sets, Roxann Dawson’s decision not to direct more Star Trek, and some new fine art posters coming from Vice Press. Review time! They start with the very Short Treks episode “Worst Contact,” discussing the short itself as well as the fan reaction, then happily dig into Star Trek: Lower Decks‘ “Something Borrowed Something Green” and the fun of Trek’s very first visit to the Orion homeworld. They wrap things up with a deep exploration of the Dauntless from author David Mack and new spider species named after the TOS crew.

Tread Perilously continues its annual Star Trek month with the Star Trek: The Next Generation episode called "The Loss." When the Enterprise encounters anomalous sensor shadows on multiple systems, it soon becomes trapped in a gravitational field none of the bridge staff can explain. Meanwhile, Counselor Troi loses her empathic powers. Is it related to whatever phenomenon is happening outside the ship? And will she be able to adjust to life as a non-empathic humanoid in time to discover why the ship is being hurtled toward a quantum sting fragment? Also, an ensign learns to grieve. Erik is immediately impressed by the episode's ability to discuss grief and loss -- notions forbidden in earlier seasons by creator Gene Roddenberry. A joke about the episode director's name leads to Justin developing another missing film from the 1980s. The post-scarcity and agnostic natures of the Federation are examined. Worf continues to declare whether or not aspects of his world have honor. The pair also examine the episode's disability metaphor. Troi apparently being the lone counselor for over 1000 people becomes a sticking point. Favorite recurring Star Trek: Discovery characters are named. Justin and Erik try to make Geordi's journey across the series more impactful and Erik decides Troi and Riker are better together.

Clint Howard: Past Tense, Present, and Future Clint Howard is the only actor to appear in every era of Star Trek on TV and is one of the most recognizable character actors in all of Hollywood! He's accomplished plenty and been through some tough times, but today, his perspective on his life and career has never been more positive. Besides Clint's 250+ roles in TV shows and films, Clint's appeared five times in the Star Trek franchise. He debuted as a six-year-old in the first season episode of the original Star Trek, “The Corbomite Maneuver,” as Commander Balok. Three decades later, he returned to the franchise as an adult for the “Star Trek: Deep Space Nine” episode “Past Tense” as a vagrant named Grady. A little later, Clint donned his heaviest Trek prosthetics to play Muk the Ferengi in “Star Trek: Enterprise” in “Acquisition,” alongside other Trek alumni guest stars like Jeffrey Combs and Ethan Phillips. Almost 15 years passed until Clint rejoined Trek for this modern era, showing up as the Creepy Orion for the season one finale of “Star Trek: Discovery,” titled “Take My Hand,” and most recently, Clint was Buck Martinez in “Star Trek: Strange New Worlds,” from the episode “Under the Cloak of War. Whew, that's a lot! In addition to Clint's prolific acting career, he and his brother Ron penned a dual autobiography titled “The Boys: A Memoir of Hollywood and Family,” all about growing up as a child actor and the stories that made him and Ron the luminaries they are along the way. We're talking Trek, the secrets of Tranya, what didn't make the cut in his Discovery appearance, his unfortunate Star Wars audition, and a whole lot more in this deep dive (including action figures) with the one and only Clint Howard! It's a week with a bad movie but the conversation between Brothers J and Drew is worth your time. The film is American Traitor which is a wasted opportunity to tell an interesting story. The conversation goes from a great deal of pizza talk to Star Trek Discovery, Gates McFadden, Malcolm in the Middle, Alias, Nikita, Covert Affairs, and Korean reality shows. Welcome back! This month's guest is an award-winning writer, producer, director, actress...she's pretty much done it all. She's Abie Ekenezar and she's here to discuss her favorite show, Doctor Who! Then Abie brings us her Pick of the Month, the debut Star Trek series for CBS All Access/Paramount Plus, Star Trek: Discovery! We discuss just how different each season can be, the devastating character-driven plot of Season 4, what we all wish for the fifth and final season next year, and of course, Oscar Winner Michelle Yeoh. If you're in Long Island August 18-20, visit us at L.I. Who 60! We will be doing a LIVE show on the main stage at 1pm on Saturday, August 19th with our special guest actor/writer Michael Troughton! This week, Mike and Mike are talking about Michelle Yeoh's prominent recurring role in STAR TREK: DISCOVERY - and more specifically, her role in the first two episodes of the show, "The Vulcan Hello" and "Battle at the Binary Stars."
Access this entire 87 minute episode (and additional monthly bonus episodes, including the entire Miami Vice sidebar series) by becoming a Junk Filter patron! Over 30% of episodes are exclusively available to patrons of the show. https://www.patreon.com/posts/140-miami-vice-86864671 The Miami Vice sidebar series continues with returning guest Sean Armstrong, a Toronto-based veteran boom operator for film and television (Star Trek: Discovery, Hannibal) For this episode we discuss the influence Vice had on the city of Miami itself, how the city conformed to the image the program had of it, which had implications for tourism and Miami as a major production hub for film and television. But we also talk about how the program was eventually a victim of its success, and the aspirational tones of the series degraded over the course of five years as the drug war accelerated, the creatives left and popularity waned, with the show finally chasing after trends where once it set them. We sample episodes throughout the series to illustrate this, from Abel Ferrara's season 1 episode The Home Invaders(which has major elements Michael Mann would later return to in Heat and the upcoming Heat 2) to mid-series episodes about miscarriages of justice and the paranoid world of surveillance and counter-surveillance, and what the show looked like in its final days (including one of the worst episodes of the series, a backdoor pilot for a potential ripoff of 21 Jump Street). Follow Sean Armstrong on Twitter. [Review starts at 26:55] Tony and Laurie have updates from San Diego Comic-Con about Star Trek: Discovery, Prodigy, Lower Decks, Strange New Worlds, and some new animated shorts. They talk about the new clips and trailers as well as some new merchandise coming our way. After the news, they dig into their review of Strange New Worlds‘ “Under the Cloak of War,” which they agree was ambitious and hit the mark more for Tony than for Laurie, although both felt it had impressive performances, raised important questions, and touched on some key Star Trek themes. They wrap up with a new tidbit from the Delta Flyers podcast and a new crowdfunded documentary about Star Trek locations, plus a reminder to come see the TrekMovie team's panel at The 57-Year Mission in Las Vegas next week.

Actor Osric Chau is equally adept at comedy and drama, and at being a supportive member of an ensemble while still shining on his own. Osric played Kevin Tran, a high school student turned ghost turned prophet, on Supernatural, and Vogel, a member of the quartet known as the Rowdy Three, on Dirk Gently's Holistic Detective Agency. He won a Leo Award for Best Supporting Performance by a Male in a Dramatic Series for portrayal of Charles in Blood and Water, the first television drama series produced for a Chinese Canadian audience that mixed dialogue in English, Cantonese and Mandarin, and he's had great roles in Star Trek Discovery, Nancy Drew, Christmas at the Golden Dragon, and The Flash. Osric is also a producer. He's a writer and director. He's been a restaurateur. He's spoken out about acts of hatred against Asian Canadians and Asian Americans. In this compelling and at times soul-stirring episode, Osric talks genre-hopping, navigating the industry as an Asian actor, how Supernatural's Kevin Tran changed his life, and the deeply moving story behind his stunning look for the 2016 Leo Awards. Note: This episode was recorded in June 2023, prior to the SAG-AFTRA union declaring a strike. Rainn Wilson describes himself as an actor and an artist, who writes some books about spirituality on the side. As well-known as Rainn is on the screen and stage, particularly for playing Dwight on the TV series “The Office,” we invited him on House Calls to talk about spirituality – specifically how spirituality can help us change the world for the better, from addressing global challenges like climate change, to creating more connection and community in our daily lives. Rainn is looking for what he calls a “spiritual revolution”, in which we all give back to humanity with “loving kindness.” Join us as we talk about what that looks like and how we can all help make our world a more meaningfully connected place. (02:38) How does Rainn Wilson want to be known? (06:42) Are we experiencing a spiritual crisis? (11:13) How can spirituality help fix today's world? (15:36) How has Rainn's personal journey with spirituality evolved? (20:25) What precipitated Rainn's experience of loneliness and isolation as a young man? (24:09) What would Rainn Wilson today tell his 20-year-old self about happiness? (34:59) How can we connect and lead with love? (41:00) Love, kindness, and loving kindness. (55:06) How does Rainn prioritize people and community in his life? (01:01:11) Which of Rainn Wilson's many pets is a being most of us have probably never encountered? We'd love to hear from you! Send us a note at housecalls@hhs.gov with your feedback & ideas.
