What Up Wembley documents and celebrates all the many events, achievements and stories that occur on a weekly basis at an Australian primary school. The entire podcast is recorded, edited and produced by a small team of students from Years 5 & 6.
Lots to cover this week; incursions, excursions, playground allocations, 5/6 sport, Education Week, Ramadan…aaannnnd …we chat to our visitors from the Drama Toolbox! Also, be sure to tune-in for Story-time as Erin reads chapter 3 of The Gizmo and a short story, Caps For Sale.
Well, our Year 3’s and 5’s did it – they survived NAPLAN, and by all accounts managed the week incredibly well! The online tests went smoothly, thanks to Kristen’s tech support and the students’ positive ‘can do attitudes’. Camp Quality visited Wembley and carried out several puppet performances, all in the name of educating us about cancer care and how to support our friends and family, should they be going through difficult times. We also have some of our regulars: Storytime with Erin and Live From the Container, with Grant, who has quite a few updates for us. All of this wrapped up by Big Al, Aslan and Pancakes, who came to Wembley to teach us about Aboriginal history, their culture, beliefs and stories.
Adding to our regular feature, Storytime with Erin, we have one of our students, Eliot, read aloud his own narrative – The Pikajeff! As well as a short story for our younger listeners, Erin reads the first chapter of The Gizmo by Paul Jennings for our older listeners. Our Year 6's discuss their experience of selecting high schools, going through various application processes, and their view on co-ed schools v. same sex schools. Some of our younger students report on several incursion and excursion experiences and finally, our hosts Mitch and Luc, pay homage to those special people in our lives – our Mums! Just in time for Mother’s Day this weekend.
The highlight of this week’s episode is the introduction of our new feature, ‘Story-time with Erin’ - listen to Erin read aloud two short stories with wonderful humour and expression! In addition, we discuss the House Athletics Day, all things related to ANZAC Day, including some of our very own students’ poetry; and Lola Freeman of 5/6A talks about her experience teaching at a Dance Academy in Darwin.
The Grade 5/6 cohort was extremely privileged to meet Angela Altair, the Mayor of Williamstown; she spent a considerable time with the students talking to them about her role in local politics, and what exactly a Mayor does! The Grade 5s reflect on their time at the highly popular Camp Kangaroobie, the original home of Gaga Ball and Mugby, and we meet our new First Aid Officer – Loredana.
Two main stories this week: our Year 6s reflect on their week long camp to Canberra and we hear from students and teachers about Wembley’s new House system. Cruickshank, Kulin, McIvor and Westgate compete!
A new year for us at Wembley! Find out what’s new for 2018: the teachers, the grounds, our names and of course Ga Ga Ball! Alongside the new, we talk about our 5/6 Beach Program that’s been running for over 10 years at Wembley. Welcome back everyone!
Chats with Miss Flack, our Year 5 Mars explorers and Kristen – Wembley’s secret weapon! A few more of our Year 6s share their memoirs*, whilst Mitch and Luc keep us informed with the key dates and events leading up to the end of the school year. Short and sweet this week! * Unfortunately we had some technical difficulties during the recording of our Year 6 memoirs – one of our readers, Nathan Penry-Williams will have to re-record and present next week, so apologies for the confusion with this part of the podcast.
Miss Petridis sets the bar high with her contribution to our informal 'Staff Joke Competition', though the Year 3 teachers reciprocate with one of their own! A handful of Year 1 students speak very eloquently about their Movie Night, which is part of their camping program, and we also have a couple of teachers on the Podcast to explain what Instructional Rounds are.
As the title suggests, we dedicate some of this podcast to honouring our service men and women through the thoughtful words of Ella, Phoenix and Cooper. We talk to our Year 2 teachers, where we discover that one of them has eaten tomato sauce on ice cream (yuck!) and that one of them accidentally caused a snowstorm in her classroom this year. Finola and Eden of 5/6A share some of their individual successes, and the very first Year 6 memoirs go live!
This week we're introduced to lots of exciting new features; a regular Fair Play Sports Report, a fortnightly update on the Specialist Points Ladder and best of all, 'Live From the Container', where we hear from Grant about all the grounds updates at Wembley. Along with all this, we hear from the Year 4 teachers and chat to the students about Halloween!
This episode’s features include the Year 2s talking about their visit to Scienceworks, the Year 6s reflect on their Film Night at the Sun Theatre in Yarraville, while Miss Ruth explains the latest update to the specialist points system. Our reporters ask Wembley’s student body whether or not student requests for their new class are a good thing or not, and Mitch and Luc keep us in the loop with some upcoming dates and events to put in the diary.
Just a mini-episode to bring you up to speed with the happenings of Term 4 so far, and let you know when our first proper episode will be this term. Please let us know what you think of the podcast so far, by seeking out our feedback survey (details in the episode, newsletter and on Sentral).
No prizes for guessing what the feature story of this episode is! The musical was a huge success, and so we take one last look at the performances and celebrate this achievement for Wembley. We also talk to Mrs Jones, who is holding the fort whilst the Principal is away on his travels, and this week it’s the Grade 5 teachers who face our interview panel. This is the final episode for the term, so we’ve packed it full to the brim, with as many stories as we can from weekly Wembley life!
That’s right, Wembley has a Gardening Club and you can hear all about it on this week’s episode. Our teacher interviews are with the Grade 1s, where we learn why Mr Hart is the king of dad jokes. We also speak to our Hoop Timers and some of last year’s Maribyrnong Writers competition winners.
The lesser known sibling of Literacy Week takes it’s place in the limelight in this episode, alongside the musical. We talk to our maths guru, Mr Chig; and some of Wembley’s own human calculators give us the low-down on Maths Olympiad. The lead cast of ‘It’s a Jungle Out There’ share their experiences after giving us a sneak peak at some of the songs. Then, thrown in for good measure, is a sports report on the Netball Championships and of course, we couldn’t forget Fathers Day!
With literacy being in the spotlight this week, we talk to our Leader of Learning in English, take a look at what happens during an author visit and get the run down of the week’s special activities. We also learn about STEPtember and talk to some students who are competing in the snow.
This week we come to understand why it’s such a big deal to survive your first 100 days, ever, of primary school! We join the prep students as they celebrate this achievement and discover what school camp looks like when you’re 5 years old. We also say a temporary ‘Goodbye’ to Miss Shenoy and hear exactly why she will be missed by her Grade, 4D.
A winning week for Wembley - hear all about the 3-6 District Athletics and from our own champion runner, Evie. The School Captains and 5/6 Sports Captains give us an insiders view of student leadership, whilst the Year 6 teachers are put through the mill by our interview team. Happy listening!
