On this weeks interview on the Secret MENS Business podcast we speak to children's book author Josh Langley about TEACHING THE NEXT GENERATION OF BOYS.Through the act of storytelling and being listened to, we can connect to our past, others, and ourselves. Passing on our legacy through our stories is not only a way to teach our values, it is also the essence of passing on a sense of self worth and identity to the next generation of men. We want our children to be happy, reach their potential, and live fulfilling lives. Increasingly, and especially in today's awareness of inequality, we also aspire for them to be part of a fair and equal society.Josh Langley was told he would amount to nothing in life, having failed high school (twice) and being unemployed for several years, but that didn't stop Josh from becoming a multi award-winning radio copywriter and award-winning children's author. Josh's debut children's book, Being You is Enough changed the trajectory of his life. Written as a love letter to his 8-year-old self, it's message of self-acceptance and love resonated with kids and parents around the world.  He went on to publish 9 books and in 2018 won the Australian Book Industry Awards Small Publishers' Children's Book of Year, for his second children's book It's Ok to Feel the Way You Do (Big Sky Publishing 2017).Now his ground-breaking children's books, programs and school talks on self-acceptance, resilience, understanding emotions and kindness, are helping thousands of kids make friends with themselves. Josh lives on 7 and a half acres in the Southwest of Western Australia with his husband and his favourite food is tortellini. Josh is the ambassador for the Children's Tumour Foundation and Camp Quality and was voted a Westfield Local Hero for the work he does with CTF. If there was one thing you think society should talk more about, what would it be?“The current political environment and apparent lack of leadership in our country.”My guest today is a successful business leader, active social commentator and activist. Kylea Tink believes that challenges cannot and should not be ignored. She has been a driving force behind a number of initiatives that have shaped the Australian community for the better. Kylea is a passionate believer that each of us can play an important role in addressing the challenges facing our society. Being told something can't be done, or shouldn't be considered or discussed, has more often than not motivated her to ask "why not" and to play her part in the push for positive change. Kylea has been a CEO, Managing Director, business owner, Board Director and Strategic Adviser. For the past 30 years, Kylea has worked in all sectors - Government, Commercial and Not-for-Profit, helping to drive sustainable, positive change. Her capacity to quickly come to grips with business and stakeholder challenges has seen her not only champion the development of several iconic community campaigns (including the Sydney Pink Test) but has ultimately resulted in the achievement of a number of sustainable positive social changes. From her current work with organisations assisting vulnerable young Australians, through to the role she played as CEO at the McGrath Foundation to establish the organization and exponentially expand its Breast Care Nurse Network, to her most recent role as CEO of Camp Quality where she was challenged to bring the organization into the 21st Century, Kylea's commitment to never settling for the status quo has meant she is widely recognized as a formidable change agent. With a proven track record for building and inspiring high performing teams, Kylea's ultimate motivation is simple: “To leave the world a better place than I found it!” Kylea and I met many years ago under the stars in the outback at an incredible dinner at Uluru. We had so much in common and we've been great mates ever since. Kylea called me before she went public to let me know she was putting her hand in the ring to join politics. I challenged her on whether she was sure she wanted to do it. This country does not have a great political landscape and female politicians are somewhat marginalised. So I asked her ‘Why would you willingly put yourself (and your children) into that incredibly tough environment?” Her response gave me lots to think about - and that's why I wanted to get her on the show to chat on this interesting topic that might make you put more thought into the next time you vote. Please enjoy this wonderful conversation with the fabulous Kylea Tink.___Connect and find out more about Kylea here;-Twitter: @KyleaTinkInstagram: @KyleaTinkFacebook: https://www.facebook.com/North-Sydneys-Kylea-Tink-for-Canberra Website:https://www.kyleatink.com.au And for more information about the Wabi Sabi Series, please find us here:-Website - The Wabi Sabi Series Connect with us on Instagram here:- @thewabisabiseriesConnect with us on Facebook here - @thewabisabiseriesIf you have a burning topic you'd love society to talk more about, or know someone who'd be great to come on our podcast, drop us a line at hello@wabisabiseries.com

Kari Sutton reveals the 10 keys of how to Raise a Mentally Fit Generation of Children

Inspired Evolution

Play Episode Listen Later Dec 20, 2020 79:28

In this week’s episode, Amrit interviews Kari Sutton, a researcher, educator, author, speaker and parent. She has been a teacher, Deputy Principal, Guidance Counsellor and Consultant for families for over 30 years, as well as involved with Camp Quality, a support program created specifically to help children 0 –13 years, who are dealing with their own cancer diagnosis, or the diagnosis of someone they love.Kari and Amrit dive deep into Kari’s recent book “Raising a Mentally Fit Generation” covering the ten keys for raising wellbeing within our kids. Kari has written this book after having gone through a lot of challenges. It is beautifully written, easy to read and not only is for kids, but for adults as well. If you would like to have Kari’s book and learn more about how to raise well being and resilience in your child, please go to: https://inspiredevolution.com/recommends/kari-sutton/ As parents, teachers, educators or any other important adults in kids' lives, it’s our responsibility to help them develop positive, healthy habits of mind that foster resilience and wellbeing so they can flourish and thrive. Childhood must be an unworried special time in life, enjoy and live free from stress and pressure from the increasingly competitive world we all are living in.They talk about the meaning and importance of mental fitness, the challenges we all have today evolving in fast changing social structures, why kids need boundaries and adults need to put boundaries on themselves too, and amusing things everyone can do on a daily basis to build resilience. As they go along, they cave into each chapter of her book, and have conversations about “upstairs and downstairs of the brain” as an easy concept for kids to understand what is going on, the benefits of cultivating optimism, about “The unfortunately fortunately game” and reframing the way we look at things, about the need of managing and naming emotions to tame them and about the four key places to point people to recognize strengths and purpose.Furthermore in this chapter you will learn how to connect with your kids, how your relationship can help them build resilience and understand why relationships are the cornerstone of resilience. You will have access to practical and implementable tips that will help build children's resilience, and you will understand why relationships are critical for adult resilience and positive mental health as well. Finally learn how to create a ripple effect of kindness and empathy, and discover how important it is to make the time to make memories!Level up your life with unlimited access to every Mindvalley Quest Program (over 30+ programs). All Yours. Instantly. https://inspiredevolution.com/recommends/mindvalley/About Kari Sutton:Kari Sutton is an educator, speaker and author who has helped over 25,000 children, parents, and educators with evidence- based strategies, tools and approaches to foster children's positive mental health and resilience.Research, writing, speaking and consulting work reflect her expertise in early childhood development, positive psychology, early childhood education and developmental cognitive neuroscience. Kari is driven to change the conversation about how we promote good mental health in children. She wants to help turn around the alarming statistics about depression, anxiety disorders, and suicide affecting an entire generation. She spends her time raising awareness about how adults can improve children’s mental fitness and resilience by speaking at conferences, workshops and public forums as well as through her blogs, articles, books and book chapters, and her white papers. Kari is the author of Raising Generation XXL and her recent book Raising a Mentally Fit Generation. “My dream is to one day put one of my books in each of the newborn bags at the hospital” Tune In: Welcome Kari Sutton to the Inspired Evolution!: (00:00:00)About mental fitness: (00:04:08)Despression, anxiety, self harm, and suicide as well is impacting children more and more in the last 15 years. Children need the skills to develop their mental muscles and positive mental health in wellbeing. They need skills, attitudes and mindsets that allow them to flexibly adapt to both challenges and opportunities.“We are not giving children the skills to develop positive mental health in wellbeing”Evolving as a society in social structures: (00:05:50)The world is changing every day and very fast. Technology plays a big part in all of this. Kids use more and more electronic devices which makes the world come into our homes in a whole wild variety of ways. These kids, now more than ever, must be conscious about what is feeding their minds.“We have to be better at taking care of our own well being than when we were growing up” Resilience piece around boundaries: (00:07:13)Kids thrive better with boundaries. Adults must put boundaries on themselves too and not chronically go out and rescue them. The more you protect them, the less resilient they will be. Kids need to fail and know it is alright to do so. Your job is to hold them in a supportive space. Dive in and discover three simple things you can do every day to build resilience!“Kids need to be able to sit with disappointment, actually knowing that failing is ok”Optimum age to be learning things to face resilience: (00:11:56)From 0 to 8 kids are like sponges, they take everything in and there is no critical filter. Adults must be very careful with language and all what they say, because it becomes a self fulfilling prophecy. “It is about how we live our lives, how we model these behaviours, and what we can do for our children”Describing the metaphor “upstairs and downstairs floors of the brain” (Chapter 1, Teaching Brain Basics): (00:16:58)Kari uses a fun and easy concept for kids to understand what she is talking about. She draws a brain to teach and explain. The upstairs part is where your thinking brain lives, the downstairs part is where your feeling brain lives and they both are connected. Cave in and see what happens when the downstairs brain takes over or when the stairs connecting the two no longer work.“Upstairs and downstairs is an easy concept for kids to understand what is going on”Benefits from cultivating optimism (Chapter 2, Cultivating optimism): (00:23:28)The book is based on tenets of positive psychology, and optimism and pessimism are explanatory styles. Developing an optimistic explanatory style in adults and kids helps them set goals, look to the future and make everything worthwhile.“When you have optimism, there is more hope”About “The unfortunately fortunately game”: (00:27:27)Kari refers to a fantastic quote by Alfred Wainwright: “There's no such thing as bad weather, only unsuitable clothing”. Life is about how you look and reframe things. It is all about always looking for the silver lining.“Always create hope”Kids and adults managing emotions (Chapter 3, Managing emotions): (00:32:05)According to Dan Siegel, you must name emotions to tame them. Kari talks about emotional intelligence, which is self awareness and self management, both heart of emotional well being and psychological well being. Tune in and discover how to label your emotions and manage your actions to external events and strong feelings without aggressive behaviour“Name emotions to tame them”Kids capacity in having emotional intelligence: (00:35:46)Dive in and discover a beautiful and most fun way Kari teaches kids to recognize their emotions and work on them!“That is what your brain looks like when downstairs is in control”About feelings which are acceptable and behaviours that are not: (00:39:07)Love and acceptance must be for all children. Bad behaviour can be changed and kids can learn .There is a space between stimulus and response. This space gives them the choice in how to respond. “I will love the child and accept the child no matter what”Doubling down on strengths (Chapter 4, Recognizing people’s strengths): (00:43:00)Every single one of us is unique. We all have come to this world with something that is only ours. Tap-into that and reveal why you are here. In this episode you will find out the four key places Kari and Amrit point people to identify strengths and uncover their purpose in life. Do YOU know enough people to get a million members into a facebook group? I know I don’t, and I would imagine our guest Danielle Askew didn’t think so either. Turns out, she would have been wrong. Starting as a way to make each other laugh, the Bin Isolation Outing group began with friends sharing photos of themselves getting dressed up in costumes to take their rubbish bins out - because during COVID19 our bins get to go out more than we do! Within one month it had turned into an international phenomenon, even being mentioned on the Graham Norton show, all driven by Danni’s belief that laughter is the best medicine. Thousands of people now take part in bin outings every day and the positivity the group has generated has been lauded by first responders all over the world. Not surprisingly this has been quite the steep learning curve for Danni, and she shares the incredible positives, and the unfortunate negatives that hosting a group like this brings.  Plus, Peita & Hayley chat about the danger in letting our inner critic get too loud, and provide some tips to ensure our inner negative voice doesn’t rob us of trully joyous experiences. Diagnosed before his first birthday and spending over ¼ of his life in hospital, doctors told him school and sport were not options. Infection and fatigue were too great a risk, reaching his teenage years would be a miracle. His only wish was to lead a normal life and be able to do all the things that other kids took for granted every day. But he had a dream and the undying determination to achieve the impossible… No matter the size of the obstacles that lay ahead. Now, an accomplished businessman, National Ambassador  for Camp Quality, Australian of the Year finalist, Australia Day Ambassador and international hall of fame inductee,  Michael inspires people from all walks of life. It is no doubt he has a heart for giving and a skill to engage people from all walks of life. Within the last five years he has gone from being one of the youngest State Sales Development Managers for one of the largest companies in the world, to running five banks then leaving his finance career to follow his dreams in making a global impact and he certainly has done that! Michael’s story “Field of Dreams” was documented on Australian Story, ABC TV television. Through this documentary, his message touched the hearts of a nation, with his story of how he overcame seemingly insurmountable obstacles to achieve success in both his personal and professional life. Michael is now one of Australia’s most sought after inspirational speakers. A regular inspirational speaker for corporates, schools, professional sporting organisations and universities throughout the world. Michael in the last 12 months has presented in front of over 250,000 people around the world, been on many online TV success programs including Full Potential TV, The Get Inspired Project, Inspire Me Today program and countless radio shows throughout America and Australia. Michael captures audiences no matter what size and inspires each individual to achieve ongoing positive change in their life. Recently, returning from an enormously successful speaking tour throughout the USA,  Michael addressed 9/11 victims, families and survivors, pro sporting teams including the New York Mets, Toronto Blue Jays, Remax Global and several juvenile detention centres just to list a few and followed this up with a visit to the Caribbean Island of Haiti, which was ravaged by the 2010 devastating earthquake, where Michael runs an orphanage with 41 children and a school with 270 students. Have I not commanded you? Be strong and of good courage; do not be afraid, nor be dismayed, for the LORD your God is with you wherever you go. Joshua 1:9 NKJV There is a song, "Take Courage" by Bethel Music, here are some of its lyrics, 'Hold on to your hope as your triumph unfolds' Oh that can be so hard to do, hold on; press in; stand. But sometimes there is no other choice. We have to believe that our triumph will unfold. And that we can learn to worship God in the waiting, something that I believe we only truly learn in those deep dark moments. I remember a milestone moment in my constant journey of learning how to trust God more, and more, and more, and more. It relates to our daughter Victoria, and happened  about 4.5 years when we had just found out that the tumour had started to grow for the third time. There was a choice to be made - continue to live in fear that the tumour would continue to grow, or choose to live each day to the full - trusting God that no matter what happens He would get us through this. God helped us with making that choice by taking us to a Camp Quality camp where His Word - John 10:10 was displayed on posters in the dining hall. "I have come that they may have life, and have it to the full." John 10:10 That visual message was the starting point for helping me to change my hopeless thinking. I say starting point, because although God had given me that clear sign with the posters, those feelings of hopelessness didn't just go away overnight. They had to be attended to, and over-time they got quieter and quieter and God's truth got louder and louder in my head. Here is a bit of what that process required ... An Awareness of what my focus was on - diagnosis vs declaration of faith (John 10:10) Action to replace those thoughts of hopelessness and fear with God's truth Acknowledging that I couldn't do that replacement in my own strength. Asking God daily to help me take that action. Allowing God to do that work in me - not resisting, but instead surrendering. And only then I could .... Authentically worship God, despite the circumstances because He was restoring my hope in Him. Pressing into Him in the waiting season, learning to trust that not only would He get us through, but that His triumph would unfold - no matter what - here or in Heaven, has been a huge journey - and it continues now only in different spheres of our lives. But it is a journey that despite the pain, I would not swap because it has grown a greater hope, a stronger faith and a deeper understanding of God's love for us. So today, as you face the circumstances in your life, why not take a deep breath and say to God, Okay God, I'm trusting You with this, please help me to grow in hope, faith and love through this situation. I choose to worship You. Thank you that you are with us wherever we go and that will get us through this day. Thank you that our triumph will unfold because of Who you are and what you have done. In Jesus Name, Amen. Lord, I will worship you with extended hands as my whole heart explodes with praise! I will tell everyone about your wonderful works and how your marvellous miracles exceed expectations! I will jump for joy and shout in triumph as I sing your song and make music for the Most High God. Psalm 9:1-2 TPT To find out more visit https://wendyrobinson.com.au

Interview with Mitchell Tinley, Perth Comedian and one half of radio’s Mitchell and Michael Show (track them down on Facebook for more info).  Mitchell started comedy two years ago and is putting on a Fringe Show with his friend Tor Snyder in 2016.  The show is called Dating Naked, check it out if you’re in Perth at the end of January for Fringe. Mitchell will also be performing at Laughs For Locks (an event raising money for Camp Quality) on 4 December. We discuss: Comedy as the “un-happy” profession, comedy being a great outlet for mental health issues, the courage and bravery of “I’m funny, let me prove it”, comedy being very nerve-provoking and switching to “bullet-proof” on stage, Childish Gambino’s notion of turning a negative into a funny story, making jokes at funerals, laughter = medicine, feeling fake on stage, the comfort of having solid material, being a natural at radio, the contagious-ness of laughter (and grumpiness), the subjectiveness of comedy, Mitchell’s style of humour, keeping it clean vs swearing, philosophy around bombing (on stage), looking on the bright side of negatives and not running away from problems, metaphorically having eggs in different baskets, the grief process of a bad gig, philosophy of “as good as it can be is as bad as it can be”, being aware of the reasons for your actions, semantics of the word “depressed”, keeping things in perspective, the unhelpfulness of personalising and “mind reading” (ie, thinking we know what others are thinking – which is usually negative!), preference to at least give things a go (and possibly fail), reflections on RU OK? Day and asking for help, growing up with Harry Potter, jokes that transcend time, the “please like me” element of comedy, humans creating rules, the awkwardness of small talk, the near completion of his Media Degree, and playing pranks on radio veterans.
