While it was formerly deviant to promote gay lifestyles, it is now 'problematic' to suggest that not all departures from the norm are in the homosexual's best interest. Amidst this excess, a new wave of discontentment rises among the once-keenest proponents of sexual progress: gay men. What happened in the transition from inversion to homosexuality, gayness, and queerness? Why do some gay men lament the freedoms afforded to them by sexual and social acceptance? Bold and daring, the essays in Inversion: Gay Life After the Homosexual (Verdurin, 2025) reflect on the vicious cycle of debasement, acceptance, sacrifice, and liberation that homosexuality has been stuck in for longer than it wishes to acknowledge. As gay culture fails to confront its history, it adopts hollow narratives of struggle. These responses mark a fracture in gay life. If there is some essence to homosexual desire, how is it being served by today's gay culture and queer politics? Has the gay man - homosexual, queer, or inverted - rendered himself obsolete? Bringing together contributions by eleven leading thinkers, theorists, and critics who examine the consequences of pink-washing history, denial of sexual realities, and the memetic nature of desire, Inversion reclaims homosexuality's lost depth in an era of profound discontent. Fearless in its critique and challenging in its proposals, Inversion considers the cultural and political aspects of gay life after homosexuality as it battles with queerness and the allure of a reactionary return, pharmacologically fueled sexual degeneration, and existential dread. Pierre d'Alancaisez is a critic, curator, and researcher interested in the changing role of art and its social institutions. Pero la mayoría de los creyentes no le prestan mucha atención. Es decir, no se preparan por adelantado. Pierden el tiempo en otras cosas y cuando el diablo hace su jugada, se ponen en alerta y tratan de resistirlo con la Palabra… y por lo general, fracasan. Yo hacía lo mismo, hasta que el Señor me enseñó lo contrario. Acostumbraba a esperar hasta antes del inicio de las campañas para orar. Cuando Satanás nos atacaba por un lado, yo lo confrontaba en esa área. Luego él nos atacaba en otro frente, y yo lo contraatacaba ahí. Pero un día, el Señor me mostró que al esperar hasta el último momento para prepararme, le estaba dando tiempo a Satanás para reagrupar sus fuerzas en mi contra. Por consiguiente, yo estaba perdiendo muchas de mis batallas. Entonces el Señor me dijo algo que jamás olvidaré: Si hubieran expulsado a Al Capone de Chicago cuando sólo era un don nadie, no hubieran tenido un problema tan grande con él más adelante. Pero como esperaron hasta que llegara a ser un delincuente de primera clase que contaba con muchos aliados, tuvieron que reunir a todo un ejército para poder derrotarlo. Cuando oí eso, me propuse que nunca más me volverían a tomar desprevenido. Empecé a orar por las campañas con semanas de anticipación, para establecer el trasfondo espiritual de las mismas antes de que éstas se iniciaran. En lugar de dejar que Satanás atrincherara sus fuerzas, lo echaba fuera antes de que pudiera levantar alguna fortaleza. Cuando empecé a ponerlo en práctica, alcanzamos más victorias de las que habíamos obtenido antes. No dejes que el diablo te sorprenda con la guardia baja. ¡Prepárate! Empieza desde hoy a orar y a hablar la Palabra de fe sobre tu familia, tu trabajo y tu iglesia. Prepárate para proclamar el evangelio de la paz. This week's interview with the cofounders of SheWrites.com, Kamy Wicoff and Deborah Siegel-Acevedo, is especially touching for Brooke because these two women are where it all started. This week's interview is about why community matters as told through the histories and sensibilities of two community champions who started something that lit the literary world on fire in 2009. SheWrites back then was a little bit like Substack is today, but with small breakout groups and a lot of meet-ups happening in the real world. The feminist sensibility of SheWrites was what drew Brooke to the platform, and to Kamy and Deborah in those early days when she was a Senior and then Executive Editor at Seal Press—and this origin story is both a walk down memory lane and an inspiring episode on the enduring power of community. Kamy Wicoff is a writer, former publisher, and psychotherapist with a degree in social work. Kamy holds an MFA in Creative Nonfiction from Columbia and is the author of several books, including the novel Wishful Thinking and the nonfiction book I Do But I Don't: Why the Way We Marry Matters, and has contributed to multiple anthologies, most recently Feminists Reclaim Mentorship: An Anthology. Kamy is the cofounder of She Writes Press. She serves as a trustee on the board of the Brooklyn Public Library and lives with her husband and their four sons in Brooklyn. Deborah Siegel-Acevedo, PhD is a Visiting Scholar in Gender & Sexuality Studies at Northwestern University and the author of Sisterhood, Interrupted and co-editor of the literary anthology Only Child. Pues no te preocupes, porque hoy vamos a viajar a los años 80 para descubrir qué fue este movimiento, por qué cambió la historia cultural de España y cómo se vivía en una época donde todo parecía posible. Prepárate, porque vamos a hablar de música, cine, arte, libertad… y también de excesos. Contexto histórico: ¿Por qué surge la Movida? Para entender la Movida, tenemos que situarnos a finales de los años 70. El dictador Franco había muerto en 1975 y España estaba viviendo la transición democrática. Después de casi 40 años de dictadura, la sociedad tenía ganas de libertad, de expresarse sin miedo, de romper con todo lo anterior. Y Madrid se convirtió en el epicentro de esta explosión cultural. Era una ciudad gris que, de repente, se llenó de color, de música y de provocación. ¿Te imaginas pasar de la censura total a una libertad casi sin límites en solo unos años? Eso fue la Movida. FRAGMENTO ALMODÓVAR ¿Qué era la Movida madrileña? La Movida no fue solo música. Se manifestó en la moda, el cine, la fotografía, el cómic y la televisión. Los bares se convirtieron en templos de la noche, y surgió la frase “Madrid nunca duerme”, que se hizo realidad. Era un movimiento que celebraba la diversidad, la provocación y el exceso. Si hoy ves una película de Pedro Almodóvar de los 80, con colores fuertes, personajes extravagantes y diálogos irreverentes, estás viendo la esencia de la Movida. Una de esas películas fue “Pepi, Luci, Bom y otras chicas del montón”. Decimos que una persona es del montón cuando no destaca en nada, cuando es una persona normal. Y la propia Carmen Maura participó en esa película que representa muy bien lo que fue la Movida. FRAGMENTO DE LA PELÍCULA Los protagonistas y artistas más importantes Entre los nombres clave está Alaska, icono del movimiento y líder de grupos como Kaka de Luxe y Alaska y los Pegamoides. Pedro Almodóvar llevó al cine la estética transgresora de la Movida, y junto a él, Carmen Maura se convirtió en su actriz preferida. En la música, grupos como Radio Futura, Los Secretos, Nacha Pop y Parálisis Permanente mezclaron punk, pop y new wave con letras provocadoras. En las artes visuales, fotógrafos como Alberto García-Alix y artistas como Ouka Leele capturaron la intensidad de aquellos años. ¿Conocías alguno de estos nombres? CANCIÓN DE LA MOVIDA La cara oscura La Movida también tuvo su lado oscuro. El consumo de drogas como heroína, cocaína y anfetaminas se convirtió en parte del paisaje nocturno. Para muchos, era sinónimo de libertad y experimentación, pero también trajo consecuencias graves: adicciones, enfermedades y muertes prematuras. FRAGMENTO DOCUMENTAL DROGAS Así que, la Movida madrileña fue mucho más que una moda: fue una explosión de creatividad que cambió la historia cultural de España. Nos enseñó que la libertad puede generar arte, música y cine inolvidables, pero también que los excesos tienen consecuencias.   «Dichoso el hombre que honra al Señor y se deleita obedeciendo sus mandatos... vivirá sin temor a las malas noticias, y su corazón estará firme y confiando en el Señor» (Salmos 112:1,7) ¿Estás preparado para hacerle frente a alguna crisis? No esperes hasta que la crisis te tome por sorpresa para saber si lo estás. Prepárate ahora mismo. Eso fue lo que una pareja de colaboradores hizo. Estaban enfrentando una situación que hubiera aterrorizado a cualquiera. Pero cuando la crisis los golpeó, sus corazones estaban tan afirmados en la Palabra de Dios que su reacción inmediata fue actuar en fe, no en pánico. Lo que más me impresionó cuando oí su testimonio fue una expresión que repitieron varias veces: "Si no depositas, no puedes hacer retiros". Lo que ellos querían decir es que si no te tomas el tiempo para depositar la Palabra en el corazón, ésta no estará allí más tarde cuando la necesites. Terminarás lleno de dudas y en crisis, en lugar de con fe y el poder que necesitas para salir adelante. Una situación como la que enfrentó esta pareja podría ser fatal. Esta pareja tenía un niño de dos años que había sufrido una caída, en la cual se había fracturado el cráneo y lesionado seriamente el cuello. Como resultado, no sentía ni los brazos ni las piernas, y no podía moverse. A pesar de tener que llevarlo a la sala de emergencias, ellos se sintieron inundados de una paz inmensa. En lugar de lamentarse y llenarse de temor, se pusieron a orar con fe, diciendo: "Por las heridas de Jesús, nuestro hijo es sano". Efectivamente, en pocas horas, el niño fue restaurado por completo. Aun las radiografías comprobaron que había ocurrido un milagro. La moraleja de esta historia es la siguiente: la victoria no se obtuvo con la desaparición de las lesiones del cuerpo de ese niño, sino durante los días, las semanas y los meses previos, cuando sus padres estaban oyendo mensajes, estudiando la Palabra y orando en el Espíritu. La victoria se obtuvo porque ellos habían invertido tiempo para edificarse en la Palabra; al llegar la crisis, pudieron estar firmes. ¡Ahora es el momento para edificar un fundamento firme como la roca! No esperes hasta enfrentar alguna crisis. Deposita la Palabra en abundancia en tu corazón ahora, para que cuando la necesites, ésta fluya con poder. Recuerda: "Si no depositas, no puedes hacer retiros". ¡Empieza hoy mismo a efectuar esos valiosos depósitos!
