In this encore episode of Down the Garden Path, Joanne shares tips for choosing fall mums and asters. Topics covered in this week's episode: Chrysanthemums, many horticultural varieties and cultivars exist including tender florist mums (a favourite of mine because of how long they stay blooming in a vase). Or Garden mums, more commonly known as fall mums. All Chrysanthemums are native to East Asia and Northeastern Europe. They became popular in North American gardening during the early to mid-20th century. Overall, fall or autumn gardening in the U.S. became particularly prominent in the 1950s and 1960s. Their popularity grew thanks to their vibrant colours of mums—ranging from deep reds and oranges to yellows and purples—this made them a popular choice for fall displays. Their ability to bloom late into the season and withstand cooler temperatures also contributed to their popularity in autumn gardening. Fall mums grown for our gardens are fertilized and pruned heavily to maintain their dense growth while in containers. It is possible to overwinter them in the garden but without regular maintenance, they can get quite large (tall and wide over a season or two). You often hear of gardeners or articles mentioning mid-summer to cut back or pinch back the foliage on garden mums that are being grown in the garden to slow down their growth and size. If growing in the garden, they benefit from mulching to protect them from the freeze and thaw most of us experience in our Ontario gardens or gardens in zones 4-6. They can be prone to spider mites and aphids as well as powdery mildew. Mildew especially if they are allowed to get large in the garden and then crowd with other plants and especially when there is high humidity and/or overhead watering. The downside of mums: As a designer, my goal is to create gardens that are all season with something happening at all times and for there really not be a need for high-maintenance annuals. I do realize that there are times and places in the yard where one might want a pop of colour -- even me! Potted mums perform much better in cooler temperatures. Unfortunately, garden centres seem to start selling them earlier and earlier each season. They are thirsty plants when in pots, especially in the heat. If the pots aren't watered regularly they die very quickly and I think homeowners think they can revive them. Once they have dried out, they are a throwaway plant. Don't get me started on the plastic waste they generate! A better plant option for fall: asters! There are 32 different species of aster in Ontario and over 100 species in North America. There is a place for one in every garden or even a pot if you choose! While some pollinators might visit garden mums for pollen that is where the benefit ends. Asters not only supply pollen for honeybees and native bees, they also feed adult butterflies and we all want more of those in our gardens. They are host plants or over 100 species of caterpillars, nature's bird feeders. Where there are caterpillars, there will be birds! You may be lucky to find New England asters in pots at your big box store. They are transplantable and will overwinter in the garden. In addition to the New England asters, there are several other native varieties that are sold in the perennial section of your garden centres. There is a variety of aster for every garden. New England Asters Symphyotrichum novaeangliae: (purple, light purple) Full to part sun, blooms August to October, moist average soil. Swamp Aster Symphyotrichum puniceum: (purple, light purple) Full to part sun, August to October, wet garden area White Wood Eurybia divaricate: Part shade to full shade, September to October and will grow in a garden from moist to dry. Heart Leaf Aster Symphyotrichum cordifolium: (lavender to light blue) Part shade to full shade, September to October, medium to dry soil Note: It is also recommended to pinch back or cut back asters in June to prevent them from getting too big and floppy.

Bauskas novada čempionātā sacenšas 10 - 11 komandas no visa novada. Ierakstā uzklausām Bauskas novada basketbolistus.

Eiropas basketbola čempionātā sākas izšķirošās spēle. Šodien, 6. septembrī, norisināsies četras pirmās astotdaļfināla spēles. Vienā no tām Latvijas izlase tiksies ar lietuviešiem. Spēles sākums plkst. 18.30.

Tas nav pareizi.

Pētījums katrā pilsētā ilga nepilnas piecas dienas no trešdienas līdz svētdienai, Kuldīgā mums bija 423, Liepājā - 563 dalībnieki nepilnās piecās dienās un Ventspilī - 380 dalībnieku.

Play Episode Listen Later Sep 1, 2025 47:24

"Mēs cenšamies pārvarēt attieksmi, ka no vienas puses labprāt kaut ko nodrošinātu, no otras puses - ļaut cilvēkiem strādāt. Salesforce RVP Lauren McGuire has lived the full arc of modern sales leadership. She started as an SDR in California, helped build high-performing BDR teams through hypergrowth and an IPO, jumped into AE management at multiple startups, then relocated to London with two young children to scale regional teams. In this conversation, Lauren opens up about what those chapters really felt like and how she kept her family at the center while growing her career. We talk through the early return to work after maternity leave in the US, the adrenaline of standing up outbound engines from scratch, and the reality of being close to the pulse of a startup when you also have small humans who need dinner at six. Lauren shares how a move to the UK reshaped family logistics, school choices, and the friendships that make a new city feel like home. Lauren breaks down the difference between leading inside a large, established company and the all-hands-on-deck energy of startups, including where exposure to decision making is plentiful and where it is limited. She explains her leadership style, why empathy is a performance tool, and how she aligns coaching moments to each person's long-term goals so the tough days still make sense. We also get practical. Lauren walks us through the weekly rhythm that keeps her household running, the role of an after-school nanny, and the simple agreements that reduce friction at home. There is gym time at 6 a.m., shared calendars, planned meals, and just enough spontaneity on weekends to keep it fun. Her final takeaways are clear. Build a structure that fits your life, protect time for your health, and remember that family wellbeing is the foundation everything else sits on. Heather is joined by Charlotte Norton, Chief Medical Officer at The Slimming Clinic, who brings both her medical expertise and lived experience as a mum to the conversation. Together, they explore why weight can be so hard to manage, the role of hormones at different life stages, and the emotional connection many of us have with food. Charlotte also explains the health benefits of reaching and sustaining a healthy weight, how to find an approach that fits your lifestyle, and why kindness to yourself is just as important as the strategies you choose. From lifestyle changes and mindset shifts to medical support options, this episode offers a real-world look at the many routes women can take to feel better in their bodies and boost their confidence. This week on Mums on Cloud Nine, we're joined once again by Rachel Vecht, founder of Educating Matters, for a rich and practical conversation about supporting parents in the workplace. Whether you're an employer designing family-friendly policies, a line manager juggling team needs, or a parent navigating work and home life, this episode offers grounded advice for building a more inclusive and supportive work culture. We explore why parenting brings a unique set of challenges—from emotional load and childcare logistics to identity shifts and persistent guilt and how these experiences can affect performance, confidence, and retention at work. Rachel draws on over two decades of experience supporting global organisations, and shares what actually works when it comes to policy, culture, and peer support. We also discuss the role of flexibility, the importance of modelling healthy boundaries, how to advocate for better support (even during job interviews), and why workplace culture often matters more than what's written in the policy handbook. Plus, we reflect on the emotional impact of good managers, how to avoid assumptions, and why parenting is one of the best training grounds for time management, resilience, and empathy. Rachel shares how any employee—parent or not—can be an advocate for change, and why making space for real conversations is one of the simplest but most powerful things any company can do. From the southern border to the streets of DC, Trump proves where there's a will, there's a way. Meanwhile, in Britain, the political establishment sits on its hands: Illegal crossings surge as the Channel remains unguarded. Crime spirals as shoplifters walk free and police focus on tweets, not streets. London is plagued with violent crime, yet we get painted signs on pavements warning of phone snatchers instead of officers catching them. Like Washington, our capital needs cleaning up – and then we must move through the rest of the UK. Communities protest outside migrant hotels as tensions mount. 650,000 people have signed a petition demanding an election. Mums are protesting. Vigilante groups are forming. The UK needs action now – troops at Dover, the Navy in the Channel, and real policing on our streets.

On this week's Mums on Cloud Nine podcast, we're tackling a challenge that shows up in almost every area of life: getting people to truly listen. Whether it's your kids tuning you out, your partner missing the point, or colleagues distracted by a never-ending to-do list, the frustration is universal. Joining Heather for this conversation is Ruth Kudzi, CEO and founder of Optimus Coach Academy, who has spent years teaching coaching skills to leaders, managers, and aspiring coaches. Ruth shares why listening is at the heart of strong relationships, why we sometimes fail to hear each other, and how we can create an environment where people want to engage. They explore the subtle cues that make us feel valued, the role of trust and safety in communication, and how distractions, both external and internal, derail conversations before they have even begun. Ruth also explains how coaching skills, even at a basic level, can improve listening, build stronger connections, and encourage more productive exchanges. The discussion moves from the personal to the professional, with examples of how to approach tricky moments at home, including with children who have boundless energy or short attention spans, and strategies for workplace conversations where timing, tone, and empathy make all the difference. Ruth also offers insight into the training options at Optimus Coach Academy, from short online courses for everyday communication to accredited diplomas for leaders and professional coaches. Whatever your role, she believes coaching skills can help you become more present, more curious, and ultimately more effective in every conversation you have. Mums on Cloud Nine is your go-to destination for inspiring content that empowers women to build a life and career they love. In this episode, I'm joined by the brilliant Rebecca Daniel and Sarah Bramall, co-founders of The Coaching Catalysts, to talk about something that doesn't get nearly enough airtime—coaching supervision. We explore how leaders can create space for themselves in a world that constantly demands they show up strong. Sarah and Rebecca unpack the emotional load of leadership, explain what supervision really is (hint: it's not therapy or coaching), and share why it's essential for anyone managing people, especially those blending leadership with a coaching mindset. We talk messy minds, blurred boundaries, and the power of having a protected space to process, reflect, and recharge. This conversation with Helen Rebanks was recorded live and on stage at the 2025 Old Salt Festival, held on the Mannix Family Ranch in Helmville, Montana. If you were there, you know how special the moment was. If you weren't—well, I'm glad you're here now. Even though we were on a stage, in front of a crowd, the conversation had the quiet, reflective feel of two friends talking over a kitchen table—fitting, given how much of Helen's story centers around that most sacred of domestic spaces. Helen is the author of "The Farmer's Wife: My Life in Days," a beautiful and deeply grounded book about food, family, work, and the often invisible labor that holds it all together. In this wide-ranging conversation, we talk about the joys and struggles of farm life, raising kids, writing honestly without self-pity, and why the kitchen table might just be the most important place in the world. Helen shares stories from her own life and reads a few powerful passages from the book—including one that could double as the Old Salt manifesto. A huge thank you to Cole Mannix, the Mannix family, and the Old Salt crew for making this event—and this conversation—possible. It's not every day that a bestselling British author makes the trek to a working ranch in western Montana, but Helen did just that, along with her husband James and two of their four children, Molly and Tom. I'm so happy they made the journey, and I came away deeply grateful for the time we shared and the conversations we had. Whether you're a rancher, parent, reader, cook, or just someone trying to live a life of purpose and connection, Helen's story has something for you. So give it a listen—and if you haven't already, pick up a copy of "The Farmer's Wife." You'll be glad you did.
