Volgens het Grattan Institute lopen Australische scholieren achter met rekenen. In een rapport valt te lezen dat, tijdens de NAPLAN-test van 2024, één op de drie scholieren niet bekwaam was.
The Grattan Institute says one in three Australian school students is failing to achieve proficiency in maths. In a new report, the institute argues Australia has deprioritised maths, with governments too slow to rule out "faddish" teaching techniques. - 昨年実施された、全国学力テストNAPLANの結果では、生徒の3人に1人が算数の基礎力に達していないことが明らかになりました。
Continuing their exploration of mathematical proficiencies, Rob and Phil discuss how these elements can transform classroom practice. Rob expresses concern about approaches that block proficiency development, particularly rigid "explicit teaching" models that begin with teacher lectures. He argues that lecturing is an ineffective teaching method that disengages students and fails to acknowledge their existing knowledge. The conversation shifts to implementation strategies for schools wanting to embrace proficiency-based mathematics teaching. Rob acknowledges that change is challenging but notes encouraging developments in South Australia's educational approach. He advises schools to audit their current practices against the proficiencies and seek out quality resources for rich, engaging tasks. Rob emphasises that many excellent materials are readily available online and through publications, offering his own resources as options for teachers seeking alternatives to worksheet-heavy approaches.Rob and Phil discuss how the proficiencies connect to assessment practices, noting that rich tasks naturally generate meaningful evidence of student learning. They contrast this with standardised testing like NAPLAN, which provides limited insight into students' mathematical thinking. Rob suggests that integrating proficiency-focused questions into standardised tests might help raise awareness of their importance. The conversation highlights how mathematical proficiencies prepare students for future employment, where employers value communication, problem-solving, logical thinking, collaboration, and creativity—all skills developed through proficiency-focused mathematics education. Rob notes these capabilities are far more valuable than test scores in the workforce. The podcast concludes with information about Rob's series of webinars focusing on each proficiency, offering teachers practical strategies for implementation. Throughout the conversation, Rob maintains his conviction that mathematical proficiencies should be central to mathematics education rather than peripheral considerations, encouraging teachers to embrace tasks that naturally develop these essential capabilities.RESOURCESRead the blog: Proficiencies: The Main Game in Mathematics TeachingRob Vingerhoet's website: Maths is FunJOIN TEACHIFIC NOW AND SAVE!Join Teachific today. NAPLAN or any testing season can bring a mix of emotions for both teachers and students—stress, pressure, and sometimes even frustration. But what if we approached it differently? In this episode, we discuss how to navigate NAPLAN (testing season) in a way that prioritises kindness, resilience, and a love of learning, rather than just test scores. What We Cover in This Episode:The realities of tests and how it impacts teachers and studentsWhy compassion, creativity, and resilience matter just as much as academic performanceSimple ways to balance test preparation with fun and engaging activitiesHow to nurture passion and curiosity in students beyond standardised assessmentsThe importance of character traits, friendships, and life skills that aren't measured by testsPractical Ideas for Teachers:Show love encouragement to your students with gift tags with and small treats on test dayPlan physical activities, creativity sessions, or passion projects during test weeksHost a "Genius Hour" after testing to let students explore what they love learning aboutNAPLAN doesn't define a student's worth or a teacher's success. Today my guest is Ben Lawless, an educator, teacher, university lecturer, textbook author, and education consultant. Ben helps schoolteachers make sense of the different approaches to assessment, specifically by demystifying the design and use of rubrics and encouraging their value in supporting student progress. In this episode, we find out about Ben's very early experiences on a university campus, through to his later studies in law, philosophy, and education, which eventually lead to roles that combine teaching, research, and educational innovation. We discuss Ben's work in developmental rubric design, an approach used when teachers want to describe what it looks like to get better at something. Ben shares his belief that assessment in schools is time-consuming, and at times, inaccurate and often doesn't support teaching and learning. Ben shares insights into the idea that student assessment should be about growth, not just grades, and some of the limitations of traditional ranking systems. We also chat about Ben's love of history, video games in the classroom (such as using Assassin's Creed as a teaching tool), and his thoughts on NAPLAN, ATAR, and the pitfalls of big data in schools. We cover quite a few ideas and tangents in this fluid conversation. Ben encourages a more considered and meaningful approach to teaching, learning, and assessment.
