In this second episode in the 'Taking on tomorrow together' series, NorthStandard Managing Directors Jeremy Grose and Paul Jennings look at the financial results for the first year of the merger. Paul Jennings wrote the first White House memoir; but never took credit for one of his most inspirational adventures. Wypipologist Michael Harriot explains why, and recounts the Great Escape of the Pearl Schooner. "It was kind of like, like the Tom Joyner cruise. All the Black people knew about it. None of the wypipo had ever heard about it." Music courtesy of Transitions Music CorporationSee omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

If you can never connect to a printer, if furniture jumps out to stub your toe, if when you do the dishes the water jumps out the sink to soak you - then you are victim of the inanimate malice of things. The belief that all things are essentially out to get us us has a name - Resistentialism. This is a theory created by columnist Paul Jennings. On one level it's clearly a joke, on another level though he was convinced of its truth. Paul Jennings was born in 1943 in Heston, Middlesex and emigrated to Australia with his family in 1943.After graduating, he became a teacher and speech pathologist and then a lecturer in special education. In 1985 his first book of short stories, Unreal! was published. In 1989 he gave up teaching to write full-time. His stories were adapted for the TV series Round the Twist.Paul's memoir untwisted was published in 2020 in Australia by Allen & Unwin and by Old Barn Books in the UK.In this episode, Paul reflects on his writing life and the close relationship between art and life, referring to his three novellas A Different Dog, A Different Boy and A Different Land. About the 'Different' booksA Different DogThe child narrator of A Different Dog can't speak - we assume it is from a disability or a reaction to a trauma in his past. He is teased by the other kids and is a loner. On a cold winter's day, when everyone is participating in a fun run on the mountain, our narrator finds himself alone at the scene of a car accident where the driver has died. But there is a little dog in the car... What follows is a moving story of survival and redemption (and somehow humour in the midst of all that), all told in a 96-page novella.A Different BoyThe ship was a towering fortress looming over the pier. Anton stared enviously at the emigrants lining up in front of the wide gangplank. Heading off on a voyage to a land of peace and plenty.Leaving the land of broken buildings and crushed hopes behind. Looking forward to sunshine and steaks. How he wished that he was one of the lucky ones.'Loosely based on Paul Jennings' journey to Australia as a 'ten-pound Pom', the story of Anton, who escapes from an orphanage and successfully stows away on a boat headed for the land of 'sunshine and steaks' has a timeless reality of its own.It is a tale of loss, guilt, mistaken identity and taking risks but also surprisingly heartwarming and heartbreaking. Perfect for reluctant readers in upper primary and lower secondary, it speaks of loss, migration, resilience and courage.A Different LandThe final part of a series that started with 'A Different Dog', followed by 'A Different Boy', 'A Different Land' continues to explore themes of family and displacement as our narrator seeks to find a home. Told with Paul Jennings empathy and gentle humour - and there is bound to be a twist in the tale!

We then talk about the pressure of capitalism to "keep up with the O'Doyles", how bosses are evil all the time, and how sometimes depression feels like you are just on autopilot. Also, yes we think this movie is better "Than a wonderful life", even though it's more firmly based on "The Magic Thread". It's also closely related to The Gizmo by Paul Jennings, the Twilight Zone episode "The Stopwatch" and R.L Stines "Click". It's fine, no they aren't rip offs. @LaughatHimPod Jess- @Jawska Alex- @KittyCrusade This podcast is powered by Pinecast.

The current global events have challenged the shipping industry, and particularly, marine insurers. Today, they must manage increased regulations alongside transportation limitations, and they must often do so remotely, which is a significant change from the previous methods of operations. However, these events have also created opportunities, removed barriers, and increased cooperation. Paul Jennings needed a project for his dissertation on fuel poverty in the UK when he came across some charity work funded by the then 'Greater London Council'. This was back in the 1980s. Not many people had heard of Blower Doors, but a team from the suppliers in Canada were willing to travel to the UK to train people on how Blower Doors could be used to help diagnose energy and health issues in buildings. At the 2019 Passive House Conference in Heidelberg, Paul shared some of his learning from over 30 years of airtightness testing. https://homestylegreen.com/190

Oz, that mythical land, where days are hotter than chilli sauce and water goes down the plughole the wrong way... This month we're talking to Evie Wyld about her books 'All the Birds, Singing', and 'Everything is Teeth', both set in Australia. From the writing of Miles Franklin to Richard Flanagan via the mad world of Paul Jennings, we chat about Australia's many depictions in literature, but we also ponder the metaphorical meaning behind that nickname: Oz as the foreign, the distant, the magical and the exotic; something that the Antipodean has long represented for damp and green Britain.

Paul Jennings from Aldas explains why airtightness is an important factor to grasp when constructing an energy efficient home. He also shares how forward planning, attention to detail and teamwork are imperative for achieving good airtightness results.
The riveting story of Paul Jennings, who began life as one of James Madison's slaves, who accompanied Madison to Washington, DC, and who eventually purchased his own freedom from Dolley Madison. We'll speak with Elizabeth Dowling Taylor, who chronicles Jennings's amazing story in her new book, "A Slave in the White House."
“Les chose sont contre nous” ("Things are against us") is the wry slogan of Paul Jennings’ parodic philosophy resistentialism*. But Professor Jane Bennett of Johns Hopkins University doesn’t think so. (*For more on resistentialism, check out: Paul Jennings, "Report on Resistentialism," The Jenguin Pennings, 1963.) Bennett, who is the author of “Vibrant Matter: A Political Ecology of Things” (Duke, 2010), presented a provocative digest of her own material philosophy at a lecture at the New School’s Vera List Center for Art and Politics on September 13. Her talk examined the idea that hoarders (as portrayed on the A&E reality show “Hoarders”) might be viewed not within the framework of socio-pathology, but as “people who are preternaturally attuned to things.” From this platform, Bennett went on to examine and classify the intrinsic power of inanimate objects, while avoiding the idea of animism. Bennett’s lecture inaugurated a two-year exploration of what the director of the Vera List Center, Carin Kuoni, in her introduction called “Thingness,” which she describes as “the nature of our material world and us in it, and within it.” Bon Mots On hoarders and things: "The things with which [hoarders] live and that live with them in close proximity are less possessions … than pieces of self." On hoarding as a symptom of our society: "Perhaps hoarding is the madness appropriate to us, to a political economy devoted to consumption, planned obsolescence, planned extraction of natural resources, and mountains of discarded waste." On “thingness”: "Our projections are only part of what draws us to things. If we subtract all our 'self' — what’s left?"
In this episode Tessa interviews Mia about the book "Sink the Gizmo" by Paul Jennings. This is about a boy who goes fishing and finds a gizmo that changes his life. Mia enjoyed it and I hope you do!
