It's foreign exchange student time at Sunnydale High, and Buffy is hosting a male student from South America. Xander isn't thrilled until it seems Buffy is actually hosting a girl, not a boy. Unbeknownst to the Scoobies, this girl, who takes on the name Ampata, is an ancient Incan mummy sacrificed by her people. She's brought back to life and must drain the life force of other people in order to remain alive. Xander quickly charms Ampata with his goofiness, and she agrees to go with him to the upcoming World Culture Dance. More bodies are discovered, and Buffy and Giles realize that Ampata is the mummy. Just as Willow is about to become Ampata's next victim, Xander offers himself in her place. Ampata hesitates just long enough to age quickly and turn to dust. The next day, Xander bemoans his awful luck in love, and Buffy points out that Ampata may have done bad things, but she also had horrible things done to her. Kaethe and Madeline go into this worrisomely titled episode with the theme of sacrifice. They look at the similarities between Ampata's and Buffy's sacrifice of a normal life, the role gender plays in expectations and discourse around sacrifice, and the fact that it was super unnecessary for Xander to sacrifice himself to a girl he met two days ago. Also, what made Sven (who does NOT speak Spanish, Cordelia) decide to be an exchange student??
When her two older brothers fail to return from the quest to find the healing waters of the magic lake at the end of the world, Ampata decides to head out on her own - and makes an important choice along the way. An Incan folktale, retold by Elaine L. Lindy of Stories to Grow By, used by permission.

In this episode of Fire Bad, Tree Pretty, Amanda and Lydia discuss S02E04 of Buffy the Vampire Slayer, "Inca Mummy Girl." Points of interest: this insane museum, mummyfriends.net, a man made of swiss cheese, Willow's JNCO overalls, Knife Guy is bad at his job, never follow a whisper yell, Ampata's desiccated flesh prison, Devon + Harmony (#Hevon, we ship it), OZ ARRIVES and Lydia's pants catch on fire, severe mom jeans, inappropriate translation requests, archaeology club/crime club, Twinkie flirting fun times, kissucking in the girl's room, no dance for Buffy, Amanda is tuned into the dog frequency, Willow is too cute for this world, Giles' brain knocks itself unconscious, the whole cultural exchange hot mess, and a lot of very 90's lipstick. Disclaimer: We didn't think about it when we recorded, but we've since learned that "Eskimo" is offensive to some people, so we apologize if we shouldn't have been using it! We're doing our best but we are always happy to be corrected if we fuck up. Why You Probably Shouldn't Say Eskimo
Emcee, Andie, David, Jan and Logan critique the cultural appropriation and misrepresentation of Inca Mummy Girl, debate about whether Xander is all right in this episode, whether Willow needs to get the heck over it and if Ampata was a Slayer.

The watchers gathered for Inca Mummy Girl. Best thing about this episode? Introduction of Oz and introduction of his interest in Willow (he's gonna break your heart, Willow!). More, “Oh, Xander” discussions. How NOT to eat Twinkies. We discuss the actual girl Ampata was probably based on and sacrificial rituals which include a ton of drugs, booze, and food. Kristen & Mike aren't the only ones getting lost in the stacks this week! Chris from Hey, Do You Remember...? sits in for a discussion about School Hard and Inca Mummy Girl. School Hard is more than just a handful of cheeky references to Die Hard - it's also our introduction to Spike! Kristen, Mike, and Chris lay out why this character works so well and why he stands in such stark contrast to the other adversaries the Scoobies have faced thus far. Other topics include: the real reason Spike's known as "William the Bloody", the 'ol "they were on PCP" excuse, and a better way to handle the final scene between Buffy, Spike, and Joyce. Next up is the show's riff on some classic mummy stories - Inca Mummy Girl. On a trip to the Sunnydale museum, ne'er-do-well Rodney accidentally awakens the Mummy. Once a beautiful princess, she can now only regain her youth if she regularly kills. Poor Xander has fallen for this enchanting murderess and must choose between her and his best friend. Kristen, Mike, and Chris discuss the similarities between Ampata's and Buffy's fates as "chosen" girls, break down the practicalities of the curse, lament the wasted potential of Ampata's bodyguard, debate the value of Twinkies, and much more!
