Beyond the Bad Trip: Psychedelics, Myth, and the Rediscovery of Spiritual HealthTalking with Dr. Thomas Cook, psychiatrist, writer, on navigating the crossroads science, spirituality, and myth. On psychedelics (“bad trips”) as way markers back to the natural state, as tools for dissolving the walls of modern state, on genuine religious connection. On depression ego inward-facing, a comforting puppet show of self-talk, and the bad trip as its opposite: a shattering, outward-facing vision that shocks us back into relationship with the world. On the modern epidemic of skepticism, rationalism, and invisibility, and how psychedelics remove the Ring of Power to return us to childlike awe, returning us to visible beings once again. On demons, entities, and Tolkien's Sauron as metaphors for the hidden darkness we deny. On Christianity, paganism, and the rediscovery of primal virtues through psychedelic experience. On the failures of the pharmacological model of psychiatry and the limits of mainstream science, on folk medicine and scientific humility, on microdosing and sacredness, and on building a moral framework sturdy enough to contain powerful experiences. On the value of different tools, on the dangers and risks of psychedelics, on other ways. On madness as non ego. On introjection, on family as the root of culture, broken homes as the source of modern illness, on monogamy, jealousy, and the natural laws embedded in the human soul.A conversation discussing Dr Cook's latest essay on “The Benefits of Bad Trips”, on psychological surgery, psychedelics as spiritual compasses and tools to reconnect with awe..Dr Cook's Essay: The Benefits of a Bad Triphttps://beyondmentalhealth.com/the-benefits-of-a-bad-trip/Dr Cook's Medical Practice2022 Leafbox Interview with Dr CookExcerptsOn His Latest Essay So the original motivation is to give a hardheaded, more traditionally psychoanalytic explanation for why a bad trip in particularly heals depression… Psychedelics free people not just from rationalism, but also from moralism and depression is a form of moralism. It's a moral disease. It's a moralistic disease, and science is not moralistic. It's ontological….On Skepticism I see the atheist skeptical position as similar to the depressed position. That miraculous, wondrous outwardness that you get from psychedelics, that psychedelics restore people to a genuine religiosity, not a fake one.And they may even break down a person with fake religiosity. I think if they use a psychedelic, it may terrify them that they're not a believer anymore. They now you're back to the square one. Now you're back to where you were when you were a little kid. And you might feel like you're a pagan again. You may go out in the yard and look at the flowers and be tempted to worship them. And that's not a bad thing. That's natural. That's all humanity as it's in its starting point. We, for, that's just the starting point in humanity. You have to have sympathy on it.On Universal Soul It's hippie dippy, but it's also Native American. It's also Catholic. It's also Pagan. It's also Roman. It's also Viking. It's also Samoan. It's also Eskimo. Just look around the world. What do people value the most is family and their souls and the state of their soul.Dr. Cook does not recommend the use of any federally illegal drug. Hey everyone...welcome to our bi-monthly ENCORE PRESENTATION of classic REVOLUTIONS PER MOVIE episodes from the vault! On this episode, I was joined by Homer Flynn, representing The Residents and all things Ralph Records, to talk about their incredible body of work, and my gawd, they performed part of their epic, Eskimo, live recently...incredible! This was my chance to ask about so many things that wouldn't be typically discussed regarding The Residents. I was extremely proud when, at the end of the interview, Homer thanked me for not asking about the eyeballs. Why would I?!!??!? (Episode 45 originally aired on June 18th, 2024). The original show notes:This week, we talked to Homer Flynn of The Cryptic Corporation, who represents the mysterious, unknown collective, THE RESIDENTS, and discussed their legacy in film and video. Topics included the band's Theory Of Obscurity, which Resident is the easiest to negotiate with, how the band couldn't even give their initial records away and the moment that changed, creating the Ralph Records logo, what the Residents think of A.I., how they created their album artwork and music videos, collaborating with Night Flight, being The Residents during the pandemic, why The the collective gravitated to and stayed in S.F., working with John Sanborn & Graeme Whifler, The Residents' filmmaking heroes, making music videos in an era where there was no place to show them, how the Cryptic Corp deals with the band's larger than life concepts, the folly of trying to accomplish everything in one's lifetime, the story behind their Ugly Grey Theater not being allowed to exist, their early 70s feature length epic Vileness Fats and how it lead to the false start film Double Trouble which then led to their first feature length film 50 years later, Triple Trouble, and their discussion on their next large scale projects including a one song concert in Geneva and Paris. So come all you sinister exaggerators and let's talk the visuals of The Residents.THE RESIDENTS:https://www.residents.com/REVOLUTIONS PER MOVIE:Host Chris Slusarenko (Eyelids, Guided By Voices, owner of Clinton Street Video rental store) is joined by actors, musicians, comedians, writers & directors who each week pick out their favorite music documentary, musical, music-themed fiction film or music videos to discuss. www.patreon.com/dopeypodcastThis week on Dopey! It's ChrisMiss Time Again - and we remember Chris and think about what we've lost in our latest ChrisMiss episode. We are joined by Ted and Colin—two of Chris's closest friends—for a long, emotional, laugh filled but ultimately tragic journey through grief, memory, relapse, recovery and death. They recount wild and deeply human stories of Chris: his powerful magnetism,  his “whatevs” persona, and the time he hugged a drunk driver who had just killed someone. Then, we go deep into Chris's relapse, the shame that may have surrounded it, and the fear of losing connection. From Mountainside to Katz's Deli, from a poetry slam to the drunk tank, from legacy to myth to bionic legs traded for heroin—this episode is everything that made Chris unforgettable. PLUS: a classic Dopey voicemail from Tim in Philly involving coke, Cookie, and crackhouse head, and a replay of Episode 71 with Chris. It all ends with the classic version of “Bad Card” and a full-circle Dave and Chris musical outro. Stay strong Dopey Nation, and fucking toodles for Chris.Opening:Dave recalls Dave Marshall, the first Dopey community member to die. Dave, Chris, and Dave Marshall once recorded a now-lost episode that ended in a bizarre fight—possibly because Chris was trying to impress Marshall.Talking Grief:Dave asks Colin and Ted how they grieve Chris. Colin mentions laughing at dumb things and feeling like Chris is still there. Ted recalls vivid dreams where Chris walks him through his relationship with his wife, like a ghostly Scrooge-style guide. The dream was so powerful he woke up crying.Dreams of Chris:Dave shares that Chris is always dead in his dreams, and that he recently had one with both Chris and his mother (also deceased). Chris always knows he's gone in the dream—making them painful but powerful.Trend of Death:The conversation shifts to the changing trends of death in recovery: less overdoses, more suicides, including people they knew.Settlers of Catan:Chris's obsession with the Settlers board game—cheating newbies, logging fake wins on a wooden log, and playing alone while stacking stats. The actual Settlers Log might be lost.Connection & Community:Colin reflects on connection as the heart of Dopey and recovery. Chris embodied that connection for many. Why Did Chris Relapse? They dive into theories around Chris's relapse:He was doing well—finished his master's, in a stable relationship, BTN job picking up.Dave wonders if Chris thought the promises of recovery would be better high.Colin and Ted say Chris might've feared losing relationships if he admitted he was using.Shame and stigma—not about being an addict, but about breaking the recovery identity—were likely massive.Chris's Persona:“Whatevs” was Chris's favorite line, but everyone agrees—he actually cared a lot. He just didn't want people to know.Origin Story:Chris and Dave met at Mountainside, where Chris became Dave's “Eskimo”, showing him that 12-step worked.Chris used to visit Katz's Deli to impress Dave and his girlfriends. They texted or talked every single day from 2015 to the day Chris died. The Fatal Crash Story:Ted and Chris are en route to a poetry slam when they stumble on a deadly car crash—they are first on scene.Ted goes into shock.Chris takes action—calls 911, finds a guy with smashed legs, then chases the drunk driver into the woods. The driver is blackout drunk, crying, and doesn't know what happened.Chris hugs the man, tells him he killed someone, and holds him as he cries.Later, Chris keeps in touch with the man, who is sentenced to 30 years in prison. It was his seventh DUI.Synchronicity:A year later, Chris relapsed. Ted and Colin had to call the cops on him.The same officer from the crash scene showed up to arrest Chris and put him in the drunk tank.Chris's Duality:Dave sums it up: “We're the same people who kill people. We're the same people who help people. And we can turn up totally wasted again at the drop of a dime.”Recovery Today:Ted no longer goes to meetings. He stays clean through fatherhood, meditation, self-help, spirituality, and service.Colin is still active in both 12-step and Dharma recovery, running meetings and staying connected. The Island & The Source:They call the Berkshires “The Source” (or “the island from Lost”) and reflect that Chris might have needed to stay there.Dopey Origins:Ted recalls Chris calling Dave from their house, excited about starting something. They joke about Ted's long resistance to appearing on Dopey, and how his job working with kids made him hesitant to be publicly associated with drug stories. He recently shared his full story with his students.Legacy of Chris & Dopey Growth:Dave reflects on how Chris's death helped grow the show in ways that feel bittersweet.Ted and Colin say they thought Dopey was “so dumb” when it started but now are blown away by what Dave's done with it.Robot Legs Story:Ted shares a picture of Chris's titanium leg braces, used to treat ankle issues from drinking.Chris once tried to trade the $5,000 robotic legs for heroin—the dealer said no.Cookie & Classic Dopey Returns:Dave plays a classic voicemail from Tim in Philly:Shoots coke in KensingtonReggie and Cookie join himReggie says Cookie gives “the best head”Tim says no, but once the coke hits—he caves instantlyThey do the drugs in Reggie's mom's house, possiblyClassic filthy, funny, dark Dopey stuffThrowback to Dopey Episode 71:Dave plays a full classic Chris segment:Shooting cokeEuphoric recallLego hot dog standsMeeting speakers“Built-in forgetters”Chris's obsession with scale, smell, and push“Favorite part was waiting for the rush before it hit”Final Thoughts:Dave shares how much he misses Chris.Notes the podcast would not exist without him.Chris is still part of it every week.Reflects on his old sponsor telling him “you have to step over bodies,” which he rejected.Chris's death has saved lives.Dopey grew because of him—but Dave would trade it all to have him back.

Read along with the original article(s) here: https://bengreenfieldlife.com/article/nutrition-articles/how-to-figure-out-what-diet-is-right-for-you/ Quotes to ponder: "There's no one-size-fits-all diet; each person's ideal nutrition depends on countless factors, from genetics to environment." "The Dietary Holy Grail is a mythical beast. A unicorn, of sorts, prancing through our imaginations but not through reality." "Successful diets ranged from high-starch to starch-devoid; from meat-based to meat-scarce; from high-grain to no-grain." Few things capture the feeling of summer like a stop at Dairy Queen. Whether it's a soft-serve cone after a ballgame or a burger on the way home from church, DQ has been stitched into the fabric of American family life for generations. But like so many beloved things from the mid-20th century, the Dairy Queen we grew up with has changed—and one of the clearest signs of that change is a sign itself. If you've ever passed through Grafton, West Virginia, you might've seen her—perched on the roof of the local Dairy Queen. A girl in a white parka, mittens on, holding up a soft-serve cone like a beacon. Her nickname? The Eskimo Girl. And she's the last of her kind, still right where she started in 1957. Her story—and the story of Dairy Queen itself—isn't just a slice of brand history. It's about small towns, family traditions, design, and how even the quietest fixtures can become part of our lives in ways we don't always notice—until they're gone... Captains of the remaining 29 ships sent whaleboats sixty miles south to ask for help from ships that were safe. Tom talks about the luxury car market, from which models make the best investments to the shocking maintenance costs of hypercars. He shares stories about celebrity clients, cars that appreciate versus depreciate and gives tips for aspiring collectors. Tom Jaconelli REVEALS: That he still gets excited about special cars, the Bugatti Veyron was his first supercar experience as a child and remains one of the most exciting cars he's ever seen. How he helped grow the family business to £100 million in annual turnover, with their showroom currently holding over 100 cars worth around £30 million. His fact driven and transparent sales approach, which sometimes talks customers out of deals but builds greater long term trust. His profits and losses in the business, revealing they've made up to £400,000 on a single car but have also lost around £100,000 on others when market conditions shifted. What celebrities he has worked with including Rod Stewart, Simon Cowell and members of One Direction That many high profile clients now prefer understated vehicles rather than flashy supercars. Why he focuses on improving the business rather than expanding it further, prioritising quality over quantity. The cars that will appreciate well since they represent "the last of something" in an increasingly digital and electrified car market. BEST MOMENTS "These cars are starting to become their own asset class, people of wealth are thinking, right, I want a property portfolio, I want a stock portfolio. I want maybe a bit of crypto and they're now thinking, I also want a car portfolio." "For me, if I had 50 grand, I'd be probably looking more at some of like the German muscle cars, like the C 63 AMGs, maybe even an RS six V 10. You know, they don't make them anymore." "People say you shouldn't mix family and business, don't they? I think you know, being a family member of this business, you are more driven by it." My dad, Paul Elli. He is the ultimate.
