by Patrick BromleyChicago's biggest and best horror convention returns! One of my favorite weekends of the year is Chicago's annual Flashback Weekend, the horror convention created and run by Mike and Mia Kerz that takes place in Rosemont, Illinois. It's three days of panels, parties, contests, vendors, celebrity guests, live music -- everything you could want as a horror fan. This will be my sixth year hosting panels at the convention, but I've been going to Flashback much longer than just these six years. I love it.This year's Flashback features a salute to 30 years of the Scream franchise, celebrates Halloween II, a Night of the Creeps reunion, features first-time Flashback appearances from Henry Thomas, Steven Weber, and the Silent Night, Deadly Night Santas, and even has Obsession co-star Megan Lawless making her convention debut (I get to host her panel on Sunday! Come on out!). Plus, this year sees the world premiere of a brand new Full Moon movie (relevant to my interests!), in-costume photo opps, Alan Howarth playing the score to Halloween II LIVE along with the film, a tribute to Svengoolie (the greatest horror host of all time), and so much more. One of my favorite things about Flashback -- besides all the cool guests and the chance to spend the weekend surrounded by horror stuff and horror fans -- is that it's a family-run convention and really feels that way. All of the proceeds from the con go into supporting the Midway Drive-In located in Dixon, IL -- the nicest and best drive-in in Illinois -- which they bought in 2007. I love that Flashback is dedicated to preserving the big-screen theatrical experience. From this year's press release:Flashback Weekend Chicago Horror ConventionJuly 31 - Aug. 2, 2026Hyatt Regency O'Hare Chicago, Rosemont, IL  60018 Tickets now on sale at www.flashbackweekend.comFlashback Weekend Chicago Horror Convention celebrates its 25th year with a MASSIVE Celebrity guest line-up, amazing evening events, luxurious after-parties, an enormous vendor room, and special Celebrity costume Celeb Photo-Ops.All of this and more, taking place in one of the largest and most beautiful Convention hotels in the World!FLASHBACK WEEKEND 2026 SALUTES;-30 years of SCREAM! Horror Icons! Tribute to the 1980's Golden Age of Horror!"OBSESSION" (2026)!!! In Pursuit of Roses: A Master Rosarian's Insights on Modern Roses, Diversity, and Disease Resistance

Roses have a reputation for being high-maintenance, but the best rose breeders are chasing a different future: roses that bloom for months, shrug off disease, and succeed for everyday gardeners. We sit down with Dr. David Zlesak, a master rosarian and rose breeder, to unpack how roses went from ancient treasures traded across regions to the modern plants you see at big box stores and independent nurseries. We dig into the deep history of cultivated roses, including how genetics is rewriting origin stories and how repeat-bloom traits from historic Chinese roses helped shape today's garden varieties. Then we zoom into what buyers want now, from cut-rose goals like longer shelf life, fewer thorns, and more fragrance, to shifting tastes in flower form influenced by everything from rose shows to English-style, old-fashioned blooms. The conversation turns practical and science-forward: black spot disease resistance, why multiple races make durability hard, and how stacking resistance genes and developing useful genetic markers can speed up breeding progress. We also explore environmental stress, including heat tolerance and winter hardiness, and how the American Rose Trials for Sustainability (ARTS) tests roses regionally to identify truly tough, low-input performers. Finally, David shares how the rose business has changed, why Knock Out roses reset the market's expectations, and the career mindset that keeps him moving: ask what if, focus on market-limiting traits, and build a community of collaborators. If you love gardening, plant breeding, or sustainable horticulture, subscribe for more conversations like this, share the episode with a fellow rose grower, and leave a review so more listeners can find Plants, People, Science.Read more from David Zlesak  - Plant Science Students' Thinking Styles and Multiple Intelligences Based on Major, Gender, and CourseThe Effects of Short-term Drying on Seed Germination in RosaNorthern Accents® ‘Lena', ‘Ole', ‘Sigrid', and ‘Sven': Four Cold-hardy Polyantha Rose Cultivars from the University of Minnesota Woody Landscape Plant Breeding ProgramSend us Fan MailLearn more about the American Society for Horticultural Science (ASHS) at  https://ashs.org/.HortTechnology, HortScience and the Journal of the American Society for Horticultural Science are all open-access and peer-reviewed journals, published by the American Society of Horticultural Science (ASHS). https://youtu.be/LoY58ZisO18 Mike McAbee sat down with Full Spectrum Cycling’s Sven Hammer on the Veggas Pub patio in Riverwest, Milwaukee, just as the neighborhood geared up for the 2024 Riverwest 24. It was a one-year reunion, Mike had been on the show in 2025, and since then he underwent triple bypass surgery and took a two-month hiatus from the road. In this interview, Makabe talks about what it took to get back to playing out, why the experience was less painful than some breakups he has endured, and how he has managed 25 years as a working musician. He still plays mostly dive bars in Midwest towns of fewer than a thousand people, drives a semi in the fall for extra income, and lets the crowd request whatever they want from a set list hundreds of songs deep. The conversation also covers McAbee’s life in Frankville, Iowa, an unincorporated town where he lives in a restored old bank building, runs the street-light and water committees, and throws the annual Keep Frankville Wet and Lit fundraiser. In the summer, he and his daughter Lula live on a 1971 Gibson houseboat on the Mississippi. We touch on RAGBRAI, the growing scale of Riverwest 24’s bonus checkpoints, indoor training with a blood pressure cuff, and the physics of Midwest roundabouts. Recorded live as 2,000 cyclists were getting ready to roll.
