In this episode of Seeing Them Live, Charles sits down with Ben Daughtry and Jonathan Palmer of Love Jones — the Louisville-born, LA-based band that has been crafting their unique blend of lounge, soul, pop, and sharp-witted storytelling for over three decades. The conversation kicks off with a shared love of live music, as both Ben and Jonathan trace their concert-going roots back to the same unlikely starting point: Van Halen. Ben recalls sneaking into a show at 14, way too young to be there, watching a then-unknown Van Halen open for Black Sabbath and feeling like "a bomb going off." Jonathan recounts his own Van Halen baptism at Freedom Hall in Louisville on the Women and Children First Invasion Tour — complete with $7.50 festival seating and his mother taking notes in the stands. From there, the episode becomes a wide-ranging tour through decades of live music obsession. The guys swap stories about Ted Nugent crowd surges, jumping on stage with GWAR in New Orleans, playing congas with Tool at an early Lollapalooza, and watching Rage Against the Machine move 60,000 people. Jonathan shares privileged industry moments — seeing The Rolling Stones at a 600-capacity room in New York alongside Daniel Craig, Rachel Weisz, and Questlove, and catching Nine-Inch Nails at The Troubadour when they felt "too big for the building." The conversation is fueled by genuine enthusiasm, with each story triggering another in a kind of joyful avalanche of rock and roll memory. The second half of the episode turns to the band's own story — from their residency at Largo on Fairfax, where David Bowie once sat quietly in a booth and Tool's crew became regulars, to their unexpected appearance on The Tonight Show with Jimmy Fallon celebrating the 25th anniversary of their debut album Here's to the Losers. Charles and the guys dig into the Cocktail Nation moment of the '90s, the making of their new album The Greatest Show on Earth — written during COVID jam sessions in a Louisville warehouse with crickets chirping and trains passing — and the cinematic, Gil Evans-influenced sound that ties its six expansive tracks together. The episode closes with the band expressing hope to get back on the road, a shout-out to their partnership with Whiskey Thief Distillery, and a tease of possible activity around the 30th anniversary of the film Swingers, on whose soundtrack Love Jones famously appeared. BANDS: Adele, B-52s, Beastie Boys, Big Bad Voodoo Daddy, Black Sabbath, Chicago, Combustible Edison, Devo, Earth Wind & Fire, Fishbone, Foo Fighters, GWAR, James Brown, Led Zeppelin, Love Jones, Metallica, Metric, Molly Hatchet, Morphine, Nine Inch Nails, Oasis, Rage Against the Machine, Red Hot Chili Peppers, Rolling Stones, Sea and Cake, Steely Dan, Supertramp, Ted Nugent, The Cars, The Cocktails, Tool, Tortoise, Van Halen, ZZ Top. It promises to be an intense and unflinching experience. Get wrapped up with me and Billie as we talk about her role in this amazing movie which is making a lot of traction nationwide. I've been following Jessica Henwick's work for quite some time, but even while keeping a keen eye on her growing filmography, it's easy to overlook that she's been in far more major franchises than just about any actor out there. (Something that likely speaks to her range as an artist, ability to lose herself in her roles, and the accomplishment of building a wide-ranging body of work.) Whereas most actors would be lucky to book just one of the biggies, over the years, Henwick has scored roles in the Star Wars franchise, in Game of Thrones, in the Marvel Universe, in The Matrix movies, she voices a character in Blade Runner: Black Lotus, she's in the second Knives Out movie, Glass Onion, and will star in the final two seasons of the hit Apple TV+ show Silo. And who knows what the future will hold.In celebration of the release of Vladimir, Henwick visited the Collider Ladies Night studio to discuss making the irresistible eight-episode Netflix show opposite Rachel Weisz and Leo Woodall. She plays Cynthia, Vladimir's (Woodall) wife. After moving to a new town to take jobs at a local university, Vlad attracts the attention of Weisz's character, a seasoned professor there. Before long, that initial interest sparks an all-consuming fantasy for her. The question is, will she act on it?In addition to celebrating the release of Vladimir, Henwick also took some time to look back on past achievements, including her truly epic run in the franchise realm.

First up: Constantine (2005).We talk Keanu's chain-smoking demon-deporter energy, the movie's killer casting (Rachel Weisz, Tilda Swinton), why the vibes are immaculate even when the plot is… doing side quests, and why Lucifer absolutely steals the show in the final stretch.Plus: Spear of Destiny lore, Hell Bible nonsense (affectionate), the cross shotgun debate, and why this movie feels like one giant AMV with a budget.Next episode: Hellboy (2004) — Guillermo del Toro, Ron Perlman, and pure monster-movie comic book goodness.Follow Big Trouble & Little Podcast: iTunes / Spotify / YouTube — wherever you're listening right now.(And yes… we're horizontal and vertical.)

Description This week we're skipping the blockbusters for the weird, wild, and mostly forgotten gems. Grab your neural implants and alien blasters as we explore the sci-fi movies that time almost left behind. From cyberpunk head-scratchers to B-movie alien invasions, we revisit the fascinating, flawed, and surprisingly ambitious sci-fi films that didn't quite make the Hall of Fame, but absolutely deserve another look.   News Marvel Oreos - The Stuf of Legends has arrived with superhero-themed cookies.   Millennium Falcon Pilot Chair - A detailed rolling chair replica inspired by Han Solo's cockpit seat is now available.   The 'Burbs TV Series - A Peacock series inspired by the 1989 Tom Hanks classic quietly dropped all episodes.   The Mummy 4 - Brendan Fraser and Rachel Weisz return on May 19, 2028 for the next installment.   During the Super Bowl, we got new looks at The Mandalorian and Grogu, Project Hail Mary, Super Mario Galaxy, Supergirl, Disclosure Day, and The Adventures of Cliff Booth.   Check out our TeePublic store for some enjoyable swag and all the latest fashion trends What we're Enjoying Shua has been diving into Reacher, where the towering former military policeman dispenses his own brand of justice with quiet intensity and very loud punches. Based on the Lee Child novels, the series delivers tightly constructed mysteries and satisfying payoffs that make it perfect comfort viewing for action fans. Jay is revisiting Twin Peaks Season 1, soaking in David Lynch's wonderfully strange blend of soap opera melodrama and unsettling mystery. Between cherry pie, coffee, and cryptic dream sequences, it's a masterclass in mood and quirky storytelling that still feels fresh decades later.     Sci-Fi Saturdays -  This week on Sci-Fi Saturdays Jay looks at the forgotten sci-fi gem Colossal (2017). Gloria (Anne Hathaway), an out-of-work woman struggling with alcoholism, returns to her hometown only to discover she may somehow be connected to a giant monster attacking Seoul. It's a clever, genre-bending mix of kaiju chaos and personal drama, blending big sci-fi spectacle with intimate character study. Hathaway did a great job, and Jason Sudeikis plays against type in a role that's equal parts charming and unsettling. Read his article on RetroZap.com. And make sure to play around with the interactive map on MCULocationScout.com. Plus, you can tune in to SHIELD: Case Files where Jay and Shua talk about great stuff in the MCU.   Enjoy Movies!  The 1990s were packed with massive sci-fi blockbusters! But what about the ones that didn't dominate the multiplex? This week, Jay and Shua explore the fascinating middle tier of 90s science fiction: the cyber-thrillers, alien shootouts, dystopian futures, and existential thought experiments that lived just outside the spotlight.   From cult classics to genuine box office swings, they discuss why some of these films faded from pop culture memory while others quietly built loyal fanbases. It's a nostalgic, lighthearted look at the ambition, weirdness, and undeniable creativity that made 90s sci-fi such a strange and wonderful era. Which animated character would you pick? Who would be a good mashup? Let us know! First person that emails me with the subject line, "What the world needs now, is love sweet love." will get a special mention on the show.  Let us know. Frank and Jonathan kick off with announcements and a fun question of the week about sequels that outshine the originals. News hits include The Mummy's return with Brendan Fraser and Rachel Weisz, the 2029 plan for K-Pop Demon Hunters, and Grand Theft Auto VI shifting to November 19, 2026. Frank reviews Predator: Badlands and explains why it works for both Predator fans and sci-fi diehards. Then Ken Maney of the ODPH joins for a thoughtful conversation about podcasting in 2025, community, video vs audio, and practical advice for new and veteran creators. Timestamps and Topics 00:00 Welcome, intros, and what's ahead 00:13 Announcements: BlizzCon dates, SF Fan Expo plans, and Patreon holiday care packages 01:50 Question of the Week: Sequels better than the originals 06:24 News: The Mummy returns with Brendan Fraser and Rachel Weisz 14:18 K-Pop Demon Hunters sequel targeting 2029, expectations and story threads 20:11 GTA 6 moves to November 19, 2026 and what that means for the industry 26:58 Review: Predator: Badlands (world-building, effects, performances, and that ending) 40:19 Interview: Ken Maney (ODPH) on origin stories, community, and staying power 1:21:00 Wrap up and ways to support Key Takeaways Sequels can outpace originals when they sharpen tone and character focus. The Mummy's return works best if it leans into family-friendly adventure with practical set pieces. K-Pop Demon Hunters has time to scale up music collabs and world-building, even with a long runway. GTA 6's delay is a net positive if it delivers a polished launch and avoids crowding the release calendar. Predator: Badlands thrives on a tight premise, clear character intent, and a mix of practical work with CG. Podcasting longevity comes from community, consistency, and knowing your "why," not from chasing viral tricks. Video helps some shows, but strong content and an audio-first workflow still carry a lot of weight. New creators should focus on making the best episode they can today, then repeat. Veterans should reconnect with their original purpose to beat burnout. Quotes "Be comfortable being uncomfortable. If you want to grow, you have to push yourself." — Ken Maney "Everybody thinks they're a content creator until it's time to create content." — Ken Maney "Don't worry about everybody else. Worry about your own house." — Ken Maney "Predator: Badlands works because the intent is simple. Kill the monster. The rest builds from there." — Frank "Delay GTA 6 if it means a cleaner launch. One bad week can sink a decade of goodwill." — Frank Call to Action If you enjoyed this episode, follow and subscribe, leave a quick rating, and drop a review. This episode proves that nothing gold can stay, especially your 401k, as we kick things off with the revelation that October saw the worst tech layoffs since 2003, all while "Big Short" genius Michael Burry decided to bet a billion dollars on the inevitable AI bubble bursting. The villains of the week are legion: the FCC is officially making it easier for internet companies to charge us even more hidden fees; Elon Musk not only got his $1 trillion pay package approved—despite Tesla sales collapsing nearly 90% in some countries—but he also teased a flying car, clearly living in his own "Golden Dome" fantasy, which the Pentagon is happily subsidizing; and in a stunning display of entitlement, Mark Zuckerberg opened an illegal school, which is somehow less shocking than Meta's claim that their massive porn stash was purely for "personal use," not AI training. The bad news doesn't stop there, with Texas suing Roblox over 'pixel pedophiles,' though at least a rural Michigan healthcare system is doing some good by using drones to improve care.Jumping over to Media Candy, since we're all emotionally scarred by the sheer awful-ness of The Witcher S4—a season so bad it "broke" The Critical Drinker—we need some comfort viewing. We're deep-diving into the political chess of The Diplomat and escaping into the sheer volume of competitive cooking shows, including the standard Halloween and Holiday Baking Championships, plus the delightfully ridiculous Harry Potter: Wizards of Baking S2; we also took a look at Pluribus, Knife Edge, Black Rabbit, and the trailer for Tron: Ares, while cheering the fact that Brendan Fraser and Rachel Weisz are set to revive The Mummy franchise for a fourth film. In Apps & Doodads, we're all mourning the eventual death of simple, good tech as we're warned to enjoy Apple CarPlay while we still can, but at least the Lego ‘Star Trek' Set is finally here for our inner child; the real question, though, is why Automattic Inc. thinks they can claim ownership of the actual word 'Automatic.'Finally, The Dark Side with Dave Bittner reminds us that everything old is new again and ripe for monetization, whether it's Miss Piggy potentially bringing back The Muppets to the movies or the sleek, blacked-out remake of the Commodore 64, not to mention that cool Tron Arcade Cabinet Miniature Model. However, the present is still a complete dumpster fire: a Google AI model allegedly accused a senator of sexual assault, and internal documents show that Meta is earning a fortune on a massive deluge of fraudulent ads, proving that the only thing getting healthier is our paranoia, though Dave did throw in a curveball with some special jar lids and seeds for growing organic sprouts. We finish, as always, with the obligatory Closing Shout-Outs because even cynical geeks need validation.Sponsors:MasterClass - Get an additional 15% off any annual membership at MASTERCLASS.com/GRUMPYOLDGEEKSGusto - Try Gusto today at gusto.com/grumpy, and get three months free when you run your first payroll.Private Internet Access - Go to GOG.Show/vpn and sign up today. Jim Hill and Eric Hersey dig into a newly surfaced Universal guest survey that hints at Epic Universe joining the resort's Annual Pass lineup — and what that could mean for crowds, pricing, and park strategy. Plus, Jim shares a real-life road trip saga straight out of a Hallmark movie, and the guys unpack Universal's latest headlines from Orlando to Hollywood. NEWS A listener-sent Universal survey suggests Epic Universe may soon be included in AP tiers. Comcast's Q3 results show a 19% jump in theme park revenue, driven by Epic's first full quarter. The Burning Blade Tavern's fire effect goes dark — and fans dub it “The Invisible Blade.” Jim explains why Spider-Man still appears in Universal marketing — thanks to a contract clause requiring 20% Marvel representation in Islands of Adventure ads. Brendan Fraser and Rachel Weisz return for a brand-new Mummy sequel, proving Universal's monster legacy isn't dead yet. The battle for Warner Bros. Discovery is seeing a new champion enter the ring, with Netflix making some moves to put their own bid in for the studio's properties. According to Reuters, the streaming pioneer engaged with investment bank Moelis & Co. in order to prepare an offer. Ironically, this is the same bank that worked with David Ellison at Skydance to take over Paramount whose first bid to buy Warner Bros. Discovery was rejected. It was the worst weekend at the box office this year, with ticket sales coming in at just $52.4 million. This also makes it the lowest-grossing Halloween weekend in 31 years, excluding theater closures due to COVID in 2020. While new film Regretting You took in a respectable $50 million, Black Phone 2 really has the crown from the weekend having now brought in $104 million globally - another huge win for horror this year. Yorgos Lanthimos' new film Bugonia, starring Emma Stone and Jesse Plemons, is sitting at a small $11.1 million globally after breaking into more theaters. Both Scream 7 and Stranger Things Season 5 released trailers recently. Stranger Things' official trailer showed us a bit more of what to expect from that property and Scream 7, which releases on February 27, 2026, gave us a glance at the returning original cast members of Neve Campbell, Courteney Cox, Matthew Lillard, and David Arquette. As we discussed last week, Stranger Things will release in three parts on holiday weekends, four episodes on November 26, three episodes on Christmas Day, and the finale on New Year's Eve.A 'Conjuring' prequel film is in development at Warner Bros. and New Line, with short film director Rodrigue Huart in talks to direct. Franchise veterans Richard Naing and Ian Goldberg, who co-wrote the two prior “Conjuring” films, 2023's “The Nun II” and this September's “The Conjuring: Last Rites,” are on board to pen the screenplay. After landing the rights to turn one of the world's biggest video games into an epic movie, Paramount has now landed two A-list filmmakers to develop it. Sources tell Deadline that Yellowstone creator Taylor Sheridan and Peter Berg have joined Paramount and Activision to develop and produce a Call of Duty movie, with Paramount distributing a live-action feature film.Hulu has ordered two more seasons of the revived King of the Hill animated series, the 16th and 17th overall and third and fourth seasons as a streaming original. Season 14 premiered in August and is the first half of Hulu's initial two-season, 20-episode order; season 15 is set to debut in 2026.Sam Mendes' four Beatles films have filled out the cast by adding the spouses of the four band members. Saoirse Ronan will play Linda McCartney, Anna Sawai will play Yoko Ono, Aimee Lou Wood will play Pattie Boyd, and Mia McKenna-Bruce will play Maureen Starkey.Ariana Grande has joined the cast of season 13 of American Horror Story, which is currently on track to debut around Halloween 2026.Toho has officially revealed the title of its next “Godzilla” feature that will serve as a sequel to Godzilla: Minus One as “Godzilla -0.0” (Godzilla Minus Zero). The film will once again be written, directed and produced by the same team behind 2023's “Godzilla Minus One.” Currently, there are no plot details, but the studio is currently targeting a release date in late 2026.Brendan Fraser and Rachel Weisz are going back to the desert for The Mummy 4. The film will be directed by the duo known as Radio Silence, composed of Martin Bettinelli-Opin and Tyler Gillett, who directed 2019's Ready or Not.
