Send us a textRemember when blockbuster movies didn't take themselves so seriously? When they balanced action, horror, comedy, and romance without sacrificing pure entertainment value? The 1999 adventure classic "The Mummy" represents this perfect equilibrium, and we're diving headfirst into its sandy depths to uncover what makes it so enduringly appealing.Brendan Fraser's Rick O'Connell and Rachel Weisz's Evelyn Carnahan create magic on screen with their natural chemistry and witty repartee. Their relationship evolution feels authentic despite the extraordinary circumstances, providing an emotional anchor amid the supernatural chaos. Whether they're bickering over packing a suitcase or facing down an ancient evil, their scenes together sparkle with an energy rarely captured in today's blockbusters. The film's special effects present a fascinating time capsule of late '90s Hollywood innovation. Released the same year as The Phantom Menace, The Mummy showcases both cutting-edge CGI and practical effects that combine to create memorable sequences - from the sand face storm to the partially regenerated Imhotep. While some effects show their age, others remain impressively effective more than two decades later. The scarab beetles crawling under human skin still make us squirm, proving that sometimes imagination trumps perfect visual execution. We explore the fascinating historical liberties taken by the filmmakers, who borrowed real Egyptian historical figures separated by millennia and placed them together in a fictional narrative. Despite these creative choices, the production team's attention to detail in hieroglyphs, language, and cultural elements demonstrates a genuine appreciation for Egyptian history and mythology. The film manages to create an immersive world that feels respectful of its source material while prioritizing entertainment over strict historical accuracy. What makes this episode particularly compelling is our discussion about why Hollywood rarely produces mid-budget adventure films of this nature anymore. The Mummy represents a lost era when studios were willing to take chances on original adventure stories without the pressure of universe-building or franchise potential. Join us as we reminisce about this perfect popcorn movie that reminds us all why we fell in love with cinema in the first place.Twitter handles:Project Geekology: https://twitter.com/pgeekologyAnthony's Twitter: https://twitter.com/odysseyswowDakota's Twitter: https://twitter.com/geekritique_dakInstagram:https://instagram.com/projectgeekology?igshid=1v0sits7ipq9yYouTube:https://www.youtube.com/@projectgeekologyGeekritique (Dakota):https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCBwciIqOoHwIx_uXtYTSEbATwitch (Anthony):https://www.twitch.tv/odysseywowSupport the show

This episode, we revisit The Mummy (1999), the action-packed, horror-tinged romp that gave us peak Brendan Fraser, iconic Rachel Weisz librarian energy, and a whole lot of sand. Does this late-'90s classic still hold up, or is it buried under the weight of CGI scarabs and questionable Egyptology? More importantly, does it get even better with a little herbal enhancement? Join us as we unravel ancient curses, appreciate the sheer charisma of Fraser, and debate whether Imhotep was really that bad. “I know I'm not one of your favorites. I'm not even welcome in your house. But I could use a little attention.” Pete's sister Amy joins us to talk about our favorite leading man, Keanu Reeves, in "Constantine", which just had its 20th anniversary last month. We know this movie is hardly perfect, but this cast, though. Keanu Reeves was directly after he made the Matrix sequels, and Rachel Weisz has a face card that none of us can deny. We'd gladly go to Hell and back for these two. Truly a fever dream of the mid-00s. Tilda Swinton plays a gender-fluid fallen angel, Gabriel. Peter Stormare from Fargo plays Satan dressed in white linens, and Shia LaBeouf may or may not be playing his exact same character from Charlies Angel's: Full Throttle. Truly a moment to be alive. We discuss Francis Lawrence's intimidating music video background, Amy and Pete's journey through Catholic school, post-Passion of the Christ Hollywood, and pre-MCU comic book movies.   Thanks for listening and don't forget to subscribe, rate and review us on Apple Podcasts! www.patreon.com/moviesthatmadeusgay Facebook/Instagram: @moviesthatmadeusgay Bluesky: @MTMUGPod.bsky.social Scott Youngbauer: Twitter @oscarscott / Instagram @scottyoungballer Peter Lozano: Twitter/Instagram Peterlasagna

I had the opportunity to sit down with Max Baker and discuss his role in the movie “Constantine” (2005) in which he acted alongside Keanu Reeves and Rachel Weisz. This movie, in my opinion, is one of the best adaptations from a comic book; the details in this movie are exceptional. From the special effects, the makeup, and to the acting, this movie is nothing short of phenomenal. Max Baker, a very talented individual and his character, ‘Beeman' who I thoroughly enjoyed in the movie, I was shocked when his character was killed off. No one truly knows the background of Beeman but if I could sum up the character, he reminds me of Q in the James Bond movies. The person inventing or bringing the gadgets to the hero. I would love to see a movie about Beeman. There is more to this character that we don't know about. Where does he come from? How does he get a hold of the objects that he gives to Constantine? Where did he acquire the screeching beetle and dragon's breath flamethrower? Is he a part of a secret society that helps banish evil forces? I want to know more about Beeman! Off topic, we also discussed (briefly) the fires in California and how much respect we both have for the fire fighters, police, and paramedics and in which anyone can help by donating. Let's hope that there will be a movie made about Beeman and his backstory and let's have Max Baker play him!

We are in love with Brendan Fraser and Rachel Weisz as much as Imhotep is in love with Anck Su Namun. This film is full of entertainment if you can get over the ability to teleport to and from locations with ease and silly effects that may be as cool as a face in a sandstorm but are ill-used when it comes to plot and the rules of magic. Who wouldn't wait dead for years in the desert, after being buried alive, to be resurrected and practically immortal with the intention of reuniting with the love of your life? Wait, is this a love story or an action movie?

1999's The Mummy - Directed by Stephen Sommers; Starring Brendan Fraser, Rachel Weisz, Jonathan Hyde and Arnold Vosloo stars as Imhotep: a resurrected sorcerer with incredible powers of destruction. The Mummy is a throwback to early adventure films of early Hollywood, like we hadn't seen since Indiana Jones: And the Last Crusade fitting a mold that is a great blend of grand adventure with the supernatural we hadn't seen in over 10 years. One of the top 10 grossing films in the US of 1999, The Mummy is left with a legacy of uneven sequels and spinoffs (including the debut of Dwayne Johnson: Movie Star), and a remake to undo it entirely, but let none of that stop you from having a great time with this one.

The film follows adventurer and treasure hunter Rick O'Connell as he travels to Hamunaptra, the City of the Dead, with librarian Evelyn Carnahan and her older brother Jonathan, where they accidentally awaken Imhotep, a cursed high priest with supernatural powers. There is much discussion of Lanthimos' tone, and a great divide over whether Poor Things is good or not.  Also: what is the narrative of Farrell's career, what sound does a lobster make, and what animal is best to get turned into. From our sister podcast, THE CON GIRLS, comes this celebration a Brendan Fraser classic. The 1999 blockbuster THE MUMMY bares little resemblance to its 1932 predecessor... It starred Brendan Fraser as adventurer and treasure hunter Rick O'Connell, along with Rachel Weisz, John Hannah, and Arnold Vosloo in the title role as the Mummy. But this time, the mummy iss more than a creeping reanimated corpse... it's the powerful Imhotep, a cursed high priest with supernatural powers who pursues the heroes in an adventure straight out of the Indiana Jones playbook. On this episode, we look at the enduring legacy of this film.

The two-person show won the Best in Venue and Underdog awards that year. Now, she's delighted to share that the show is back at Open Eye Theatre in Minneapolis. The show is created and performed by Corey Farrell and Nigel Berkeley, who attended the University of Minnesota / Guthrie Theater BFA Actor Training program together. The show opens tonight and runs through Sept 22.  Maria says: “Moonwatchers” is a show where there's two office workers, and their job just happens to be watching the moon and making sure that things happen on time — just a normal office job — but something goes awry when somebody steals the moon. Now they have to go on an adventure to go find it. This is a two-person show where they play multiple characters. There's Space Cowboys, there's aliens, cows, space Jane Austin and space grass. It's just a lot of silly and fun.— Maria GhassemlouCloudland celebrates DIY spiritPhil Schwarz of Minneapolis volunteers at Extreme Noise Records, and he wants people to know about Cloudland Theater, a 150-seat music venue on East Lake Street that celebrates its first anniversary this fall. He describes Cloudland as filling a need for a small venue for DIY musicians (read: artist book gigs themselves) outside of a traditional bar setting. Phil says: There's not a lot of smaller venues in town. And when venues came back [after pandemic closures], there was an explosion of new bands and stuff, and a lot of these venues were a lot harder to book shows in, so Cloudland came along at a perfect time. The shows are very intimate: you can converse with the musicians and stuff like that, and it's very kind of communal.  I'm super excited for Feast of Lanterns, which features Alan Sparhawk of the band Low and also Pete Biasi, who used to be in a great post-punk band from here called Signal to Trust. It's kind of different than what Alan's done with Low: I would say noise punk and more abrasive. They will be playing Saturday, September 21 at Cloudland.— Phil SchwarzPortraits of fame on displayGabi Marmet is a senior at The Blake School in Minneapolis, where she works on the student journal, Spectrum. She had a chance to interview Blake alum Thea Traff, who has photographed portraits of President Joe Biden, the Rolling Stones, Rachel Weisz, Sofia Coppola and Jessica Chastain, among a host of other entertainers and newsmakers, for such publications as The New Yorker and New York Times Magazines. A selection of her mostly black and white photography is on display at the Bennett Gallery at the Blake School, open to the public through early October. Gabi was struck by how Thea got her start as a Blake student taking photographs, and how her current schedule means sometimes she'll get a call and have 48 hours to show up and photograph a subject.  Gabi says: They're all very different styles, depending on the person. The Rolling Stones looked like they were having such a fun time in their photo shoot; they were just like laughing or like smiling really big.(Most impressive photography subject, in Gabi's opinion? I hope you like it.About our guest:Dr. Kathleen Sheppard earned her PhD in History of Science from the University of Oklahoma in 2010. After a post-doctoral teaching fellowship at the American University in Cairo, she arrived at Missouri S&T in the fall of 2011. She teaches mainly survey courses on modern Western Civilizations, which is arguably one of the most important courses students in 21st century America can take. Her main focus is on the history of science from the ancient Near East to present day Europe, United States, and Latin America. She has taught courses on the history of European science and Latin American science, as well as a seminar on women in the history of science.Sheppard's research focuses on 19th and 20th century Egyptology and women in the field. Her first book was a scientific biography of Margaret Alice Murray, the first woman to become a university-trained Egyptologist in Britain (Lexington, 2013). Murray's career spanned 70 years and over 40 publications. Sheppard is also the editor of a collection of letters between Caroline Ransom Williams, the first university-trained American Egyptologist, and James Breasted from the University of Chicago (Archaeopress, 2018). Sheppard's most recent monograph, Tea on the Terrace, is about hotels in Egypt as sites of knowledge creation in Egyptology during the discipline's “Golden Age,” around 1880 to 1930.

Keanu Reeves actually does a great job as John Constantine but how does the restt of the movie hold up? Check out what the guys think and let us know what you think of Constantine! On this week's episode of Unclear and Present Danger, we watched the 1996 science fiction conspiracy action thriller Chain Reaction, directed by Andrew Davis — whose previous UnclearPod films are The Package, Under Siege and The Fugitive — and starring Keanu Reeves, Morgan Freeman, Rachel Weisz, Fred Ward, Kevin Dunn and Brian Cox.Chain Reaction revolves around a group of scientists at the University of Chicago who are working to convert hydrogen from water into clean energy. They find their breakthrough when their machinist, Eddie Kasalivich (played by Reeves), discovers the secret — a sound frequency that stabilizes the process. Later that evening, a group of mysterious assailants kill the lead scientist and destroy the laboratory. Kasalivich, who had returned to retrieve his motorcycle after escorting Dr. Lily Sinclair (Weisz) home, is the only witness. When the FBI arrives to investigate, they zero in on Kasalivich and Sinclair as their chief suspects, goaded along by the mysterious presence of advanced technology in Kasalivich's apartment and evidence of espionage in Sinclair's. With the help of Paul Shannon, the leader of the Chicago project, they escape the clutches of law enforcement only to find themselves fleeing the armed agents of a secretive industrial group. As Kasalivich and Sinclair race against time to uncover the mystery of the explosion, and clear their names of wrongdoing, they realize that their scientific breakthrough is a threat to some very powerful people, and that their friends aren't who they seem to be. You can find Chain Reaction to watch on demand on HBO Max and also to rent or buy on Amazon and Apple TV.We'll see you next in two weeks when an episode on Courage Under Fire, the 1996 legal drama directed by Edward Zwick and starring Denzel Washington, Meg Ryan, Lou Diamond Phillips and Matt Damon.Connor Lynch produced this episode.
