We are off to Lima, Peru to explore the very dark legend of what many claim to be Lima's most haunted location, La Casa Matusita with Dan. Has a 16th century curse led to a whole lot of blood and madness? Then, we'll head to the suburbs of Chicago for a modern encounter that starts with a shoe print. Then in Lynze's half of the show, we have two fantastic tales! Her first is a second hand account of a man who needed to get away after a bad break up. What he found while camping alone may have been enough to scar him forever. Lastly, a great Halloween story of a group of teens exploring a cemetery only to find "themselves" there. Scared To Death LIVE! 5th Annual Halloween Show!  https://www.moment.co/scaredtodeath/scaredtodeath-true-tales-of-hallows-eve-5Bad Magic Giving Tree Info: Visit badmagicproductions.com for info! If you are able to help, please go to amazon.com to purchase a digital gift card. Ouça a entrevista completa!

fWotD Episode 3077: Licancabur Welcome to featured Wiki of the Day, your daily dose of knowledge from Wikipedia's finest articles. The featured article for Tuesday, 7 October 2025, is Licancabur.Licancabur (Spanish pronunciation: [likaŋkaˈβuɾ]) is a prominent, 5,916-metre-high (19,409 ft) stratovolcano on the Bolivia–Chile border in the Central Volcanic Zone of the Andes. It is capped by a 400–500-metre (1,300–1,600 ft) wide summit crater which contains Licancabur Lake, a crater lake that is among the highest lakes in the world. There are no glaciers owing to the arid climate. Numerous plants and animal species live on the mountain. The volcanoes Sairecabur and Juriques are north and east of Licancabur, respectively.Licancabur formed on top of ignimbrites produced by other volcanoes and it has been active during the Holocene. Three stages of lava flows emanated from the edifice and have a young appearance. Although no historical eruptions of the volcano are known, lava flows extending into Laguna Verde have been dated to 13,240 ± 100 before present and there may be residual heat in the mountain. The volcano has primarily erupted andesite, with small amounts of dacite and basaltic andesite.Several archaeological sites have been found on the mountain, both on its summit and northeastern foot. They are thought to have been constructed by the Inca or Atacama people for religious and cultural ceremonies and are among the most important in the region. The mountain is the subject of myths in which it is viewed as the husband of another mountain, a hiding place used by the Inca, or the burial of an Inca king. This recording reflects the Wikipedia text as of 00:47 UTC on Tuesday, 7 October 2025.For the full current version of the article, see Licancabur on Wikipedia. This podcast uses content from Wikipedia under the Creative Commons Attribution-ShareAlike License.Visit our archives at wikioftheday.com and subscribe to stay updated on new episodes.Follow us on Mastodon at @wikioftheday@masto.ai.Also check out Curmudgeon's Corner, a current events podcast.Until next time, I'm standard Kendra.

Allyson sits down with Boynton Beach Mayor Rebecca Shelton for a candid look at what is changing right now in the city we call home. We talk Town Square timelines, why TIF funding matters for getting shovels in the ground, and where new mixed use projects are already underway. Mayor Shelton shares her nonpartisan approach to local leadership, the push for seven day code enforcement and landlord licensing, and how stronger communication with neighborhoods like INCA is shaping smarter decisions. We get into the plan to acquire and tear down the Boynton Beach Inn, possibilities around the marina and boat ramp area, and what must happen before hotels and major grocers say yes. If you care about clean streets, walkable districts, and small businesses that thrive, this conversation will get you up to speed and show you how to make your voice count.

Dweezil Zappa – Go With What You KnowDweezil Zappa, the son of legendary composer and guitarist Frank Zappa, has carved out his own path as a musician, producer, and guitarist with a distinctive voice. Known for his virtuosic guitar playing and wide-ranging musical tastes, Dweezil blends elements of rock, jazz, funk, and experimental textures, always infusing his work with both technical skill and personality. By the time he released Go With What You Know in 2006, he had already built a reputation for adventurous guitar work and innovative projects, both as a solo artist and collaborator.Go With What You Know stands as a showcase of Dweezil's ability to merge complex musicianship with accessible grooves. The record features a mix of instrumental tracks and vocal numbers, highlighting his intricate guitar lines and keen ear for arrangement. While some songs lean into heavy rock energy, others reveal jazz fusion influences and melodic, atmospheric passages, creating a dynamic listening experience.Among the standout tracks are “Love Ride,” a fiery instrumental displaying Zappa's trademark precision and flair, and “All Roads Lead to Inca,” which reflects his deep connection to his father's musical legacy while stamping it with his own unique style. The title itself—Go With What You Know—suggests an embrace of authenticity, channeling what comes naturally rather than chasing trends. It's a philosophy that resonates throughout the album's shifting moods and textures. The album also includes contributions from a strong cast of musicians, underscoring Dweezil's collaborative spirit. Yet it is his guitar work that anchors the record, weaving through complex harmonies, soaring solos, and unexpected rhythmic turns. Whether tearing through rapid-fire lines or settling into a soulful melodic phrase, his playing is consistently inventive and engaging.Go With What You Know serves as both a personal statement and an artistic milestone, reminding listeners that Dweezil Zappa is not simply carrying on a family name, but expanding on a legacy in his own voice. The album blends reverence for tradition with fearless exploration, offering a rewarding listen for guitar fans and music lovers alike.

Prima emissione 9 aprile 2025

Quirks and Quarks Complete Show from CBC Radio

Every summer, Canadian scientists leave their labs and classrooms and fan out across the planet to do research in the field. This week, we're sharing some of their adventures.Camping out on a remote island with thousands of screaming, pooping, barfing birdsAbby Eaton and Flynn O'Dacre spent their summer on Middleton Island, a remote, uninhabited island that lies 130 kilometers off the coast of Alaska. They were there to study seabirds, in particular the rhinoceros auklet and the black-legged kittiwake, as a part of a long-term research project that monitors the health of the birds to help understand the health of the world's oceans. Eaton and O'Dacre are graduate students working under Emily Choy at McMaster University in Hamilton, OntarioDodging lions and mongooses to monitor what wild dogs are eating in MozambiquePhD student Nick Wright spent his summer in Gorongosa National Park in Mozambique. After a brutal civil war wiped out 95 per cent of the large mammals in the park, much work has been done to bring back a healthy wildlife population, to mixed success. Nick was monitoring wild dogs this summer to learn what they're eating, and what effects their recent re-introduction has had on the other animals. Wright is in the Gaynor lab at the University of British Columbia.Saving ancient silk road graffiti from dam-inundationThe legendary silk road is a network of trade routes stretching from Eastern China to Europe and Africa, used by traders from the second century BCE to the fifteenth century CE. Travelers often left their marks, in the form of graffiti and other markings on stone surfaces along the route. Construction of a dam in Pakistan is threatening some of these petroglyphs, and an international team is working to document them online while there is still time. Jason Neelis, of the Religion and Culture Department, and Ali Zaidi, from the Department of Global Studies, both at Wilfrid Laurier University in Waterloo, Ontario, are part of the team.Prospecting for World War II bombs in an Ottawa bogPablo Arzate's tests of sensor-equipped drones developed for mining uncovered 80-year-old relics leftover from World War II bomber pilot training in the Mer Bleue bog southeast of Ottawa. Arzate, the founder of 3XMAG Technologies from Carleton University, says his newly-developed technology revealed a trove of unexploded ordnance lurking beneath the bog's surface. Technology allows examination of Inca mummies without disturbing themAndrew Nelson and his team spent the summer in Peru devising new methods of non-invasively scanning Peruvian mummies dating to the Inca period – so they can study them without unwrapping them. In Peru, ancient human remains were wrapped in large bundles along with other objects. Nelson is a professor and chair of the Department of Anthropology at Western University in London, Ontario. This work is done in conjunction with the Ministry of Culture of Peru.Eavesdropping on chatty snapping turtles in Algonquin ParkSince 1972, scientists have been spending their summers at the Algonquin Park research station to monitor the turtles living in the area. In recent years, the researchers discovered that these turtles vocalise –– both as adults, and as hatchlings still in the egg. So this summer, Njal Rollinson and his students set out to record these vocalisations to try and understand what the turtles are saying. Rollinson is an associate professor in the Department of Ecology and Evolutionary Biology and the School of the Environment at the University of Toronto.

The Inca Empire in South America was one of the most powerful pre-Columbian societies. It was known for the architecture of Machu Picchu, an extensive road network and a system of terraces for agriculture. The society also kept records known as khipu, which involved a system of tying knots to encode sophisticated information.Literacy in this form of writing was assumed to be something that only the highest levels of Inca society could do. But NPR science correspondent Nell Greenfieldboyce shares how a new analysis of a cord made out of human hair may change that assumption. Curious about science history? Welcome to the series on COVID-19. Pandemics have shaped our world more than we realize. Long before 2020, waves of disease had already changed the course of history, toppling empires, fueling superstition, and forcing societies to reinvent themselves. In this episode, we trace that story—from the dusty streets of ancient Athens to the silent cities of lockdown in our own century. We start in 430 B.C., where the Plague of Athens raged during the Peloponnesian War, bringing chaos to one of the world's great city-states. We move forward to the Roman Empire, where the Antonine Plague killed emperors and soldiers alike, weakening the empire's hold on the known world. And then we come to the most infamous of all—the Black Death. In the mid-14th century, a microscopic invader erased nearly half of Europe's population. People watched their neighbors die in days, families abandoned their own kin, and eerie figures in long leather coats and beaked masks stalked the streets, hoping the herbs stuffed into those grotesque “noses” would ward off the poisoned air. The image of the plague doctor became one of the most haunting symbols in history. But pandemics didn't just strike Europe. When Columbus crossed the Atlantic, he carried something deadlier than steel—smallpox and measles. Within a century, these Old World diseases wiped out up to 90% of Indigenous populations in the Americas. Entire civilizations, like the Aztecs and the Inca, fell as much to pathogens as to conquest. And in 1918, influenza killed tens of millions around the globe—claiming more lives than World War I itself—while cities struggled to dig enough graves for the dead. All of these echoes lead us to the modern era. In late 2019, mysterious pneumonia cases in Wuhan, China, turned out to be the start of the biggest global event in living memory. Within weeks, COVID-19 swept the globe. Borders closed, cities locked down, hospitals overflowed. Entire nations were asked to stay inside while streets fell eerily silent. Conspiracy theories swirled—from whispers of a lab leak to wild claims about 5G towers and microchipped vaccines—while scientists worked around the clock to create vaccines at record speed. For the first time in history, billions of people were vaccinated within a year, an achievement as remarkable as it was divisive. In this episode, we tell the story of pandemics past and present: the Black Death, the devastation of the Americas, the Spanish Flu, Bird Flu scares, and finally, the full arc of COVID-19—from its mysterious origins to its conspiracies, tragedies, and the ways it reshaped how we live. It's a story of fear and resilience, ignorance and discovery, and ultimately, a reminder that pandemics are as much about people and power as they are about microbes.www.patreon.com/theconspiracypodcast

Mountains, meridians, rivers, and borders--these are some of the features that divide the world on our maps and in our minds. But geography is far less set in stone than we might believe, and, as Maxim Samson's Earth Shapers contends, in our relatively short time on this planet, humans have become experts at fundamentally reshaping our surroundings. From the Qhapaq Ñan, the Inca's "great road," and Mozambique's colonial railways to a Saudi Arabian smart city, and from Korea's sacred Baekdu-daegan mountain range and the Great Green Wall in Africa to the streets of Chicago, Samson explores how we mold the world around us. And how, as we etch our needs onto the natural landscape, we alter the course of history. These fascinating stories of connectivity show that in our desire to make geographical connections, humans have broken through boundaries of all kinds, conquered treacherous terrain, and carved up landscapes. We crave linkages, and though we do not always pay attention to the in-between, these pathways--these ways of "earth shaping," in Samson's words--are key to understanding our relationship with the planet we call home. An immense work of cultural geography touching on ecology, sociology, history, and politics, Earth Shapers argues that, far from being constrained by geography, we are instead its creators. Where in the world am I? Peru planning   Hi there. I'm Dr. Mary Travelbest, returning from a recent trip to Asia. I'm in San Diego now, sharing my best travel ideas and working on another book for you to enjoy: 5 Steps to Solo Travel, Part C. I'm about to launch on a 90-day trip around the world. Listener Story Spotlight I want to tell you about a listener named Raquel from Peru. She has been a friend for 40 years and has encouraged me to travel to Lima since then. She created all the images and designs for my first published travel book in 1993. She's been a friend for swimming in the ocean, concerts, joint baby showers, the funeral for her eldest son, and many shared life experiences. She's an awesome traveler and has a lot of advice for me. Where am I headed? Peru   Lima Daytime: Stroll the clifftop Malecón in Miraflores for Pacific views, then relax on Playa Waikiki (the closest swimmable stretch). Evening – Barranco bohemian district (street art, safe pedestrian areas). Airport → MA iraflores taxi ≈ Ucosts S $20. The Etropolitano bus is cheaper but busy. Keep valuables close . Lima is generally safe but practices big‑city vigilance.  The next day, Cusco Early Sky Airline or LATAM flight (1 hr 15 min; from ~US $31 one‑way) to acclimate gradually. Light walking tour of Plaza de Armas, San Blas artisans, coca‑tea stops. Book a morning flight so you can nap on arrival.  Day 3 Ollantaytambo (Sacred Valley) Shared van tour Pisac market & terraces → Ollantaytambo ruins. Stay here to cut altitude (2 800 m vs Cusco 3 400 m) and be close to the train. Hostel examples: Mama Simona (~US $25 private). Day 4 Aguas Calientes PeruRail Expedition train 07:45 or 10:32 (~1 h 40 min). Check‑in, soak in town hot springs, early bed. Expedition seats run ~US $65–75 each way.  Peru Rail Day 5 – MACHU PICCHU DAY Cusco (late) or Aguas Calientes (optional 2nd night) Cusco Free day: San Pedro market breakfast, Qorikancha, café break, optional half‑day Moray & Maras salt ponds tour. Morning flight Cusco → Lima; same‑ticket connection onward to Brazil (buffer at least three hours in Lima). Don't-Miss Beach Breaks If you'd like another ocean fix before Brazil, dedicate half a day to a Punta Hermosa day trip (1 hr south‑bound bus/Colectivo, US $4‑5). Choose calm Playa Caballeros for swimming or Playa Norte for quieter coves; eateries serve fresh ceviche on‑the‑sand.  Machu Picchu in Detail – 1 June Step What to do Tips & costs. 1. Tickets (book now!) Buy on tuboleto. Culture.pe—choose Circuit 2B (Classic Lower Terrace) for the iconic postcard view with moderate stairs. It costs 172 PEN ≈ US $45. Sales for 2025 opened on 19 Dec 2024; the daily cap is 5,6000, so June slots sell out early.  Peru Rail El País 2. Train 06:10 Inca Rail or 07:45 PeruRail Expedition from Ollantaytambo to Aguas Calientes; arrive 08:30‑09:30. Sit on the left‑hand side for Urubamba River views.  Peru Rail 3. Bus up. Buy a Consettur round‑trip ticket (US $24) at the kiosk the night before; the first buses roll at 05:30, and it's a 25-minute ride.  Ticket Machu Picchu 4. Entry window Aim for the 09:00–10:00 slot (good light, less 6 am crowd, still before midday haze). Passport + ticket & small day‑pack only.   5. Guided visit (≈ 2 h) Hire certified guide at gate (~US $15 pp shared) to explore: Temple of the Sun, Sacred Plaza, Intihuatana, Three Windows.   6. Optional short hike Huchuy Picchu add‑on (easy 1 km, 30‑40 min, extra 48 PEN) – great summit photo without the steep drop of Huayna Picchu.  Ticket Machu Picchu 7. Lunch & return Picnic outside gate (no food inside), stamp passport, bus down, 16:20 train back to Cusco (arr. 20:30) or stay 1 more night at Aguas Calientes if you prefer a slower pace. Packing checklist: passport, printed tickets, layers (cool mornings/hot sun), rain shell, 1 L refillable bottle (no disposables), DEET, sunblock, walking poles with rubber tips, cash for snacks & toilets (2 soles). Altitude & health: Machu Picchu sits at 2 430 m—easier than Cusco, but you'll feel stairs. Hydrate, avoid alcohol the evening prior, and ask your doctor about acetazolamide if you've struggled with altitude before. Budget Snapshot (USD per person) Item Low Notes Lima hostel (2 nts) 2 × $20 – $40 Pariwana or Selina Miraflores (female‑only dorm vs private). LI‑CU round‑trip flights $70 – $120 Book early; Sky basic fare includes 8 kg carry‑on only. Cusco/Ollanta/Aguas stays (5 nts) 5 × $18 – $35 Mix of hostels & guest‑houses with private bath options. Trains (round‑trip) $130 – $150 Expedition or IncaRail Voyager class. Machu Picchu entry and bus: $45 ticket + $24 bus + $15 guide. Add $13 for Huchuy Picchu. Food & local transport $25/day × 7 ≈ $175 Menu del día lunches ~$4–6; airport shuttles, colectivos. Approx. Total $600–$750. It leaves room for souvenirs or a Paracas day trip. Safe & Comfortable Stays City Budget‑friendly, mature‑traveler‑approved Approx. price (private, en‑suite) Lima Ibis Budget Miraflores (hotel), Wasi Barranco (B&B) $40–60 Cusco Niños Hotel (supports local kids), Tierra Viva Cusco Saphi $38–55 Ollantaytambo El Albergue (historic hostel‑hotel blend) $65 (splurge), dorms $25 Aguas Calientes Supertramp Eco‑Hostel (quiet female dorm), Terrazas del Inca $22–50 Quick Tips for a Smooth Trip Book everything online in advance, including flights, trains, Machu Picchu tickets, and buses, to beat lines and lock in cheaper fares. Cash is still king in small villages—carry small sol notes; ATMs are plentiful in Lima & Cusco. Stay seaside savvy: Lima's Pacific is cold (wetsuits for surfers). Swim only on signed "safe" sections and watch rip currents. Lifeguards patrol Punta Hermosa in peak daylight hours.  Solo safety basics: use registered taxis (Taxi Beat or Cabify apps), avoid isolated beach areas at night, and keep photocopies of your passport in separate bags. Enjoy Peru's vibrant coast, Andean culture, and the wonder of Machu Picchu If you like today's Confidence Challenge, Chapter 3 of my book dives deeper https://www.5stepstosolotravel.com  My brother says, "Never run in an airport," and that's excellent advice. My sister says, when you get to a new place, tell yourself it's the "first" time you will visit, but not the last. If you are looking for more solo female resources, you can find several tips and ways to navigate the pitfalls with Rick Steves and Lonely Planet travel guides. The takeaway mantra is to see where the world takes you. You can travel solo and never be alone. Dr. Travelbest.

Joined by our friends from Standing Stone Kennels and their podcast, Ethan and Kat, we chat through one of the coolest hunting trips you could imagine. We spend a few days hunting in Cordoba Argentina for doves, pigeons, parakeets and perdiz. This is a two-part show so you'll have to catch the second part on THEIR podcast where we break down costs, planning and how it really is possible to plan something like that. If we can figure it out.... anyone can. Here's a few highlights from the show: Bob isn't great with silent auctions at conservation dinners What is it like traveling to Argentina and eating the greatest steak of my life. Dove hunting with people who reload the gun for you, eating lunches cooked over a bonfire, shooting parakeets (that bite). Inca doves are fast. Parakeets are loud. Perdiz hunting is very, very fun.
