To an outsider, mainstream surf culture looks very homogenous. Men with sun-bleached hair, long lean muscles, tan-- but not too dark-- skin. They hang out with hot girls in bikinis. They shred. They're easy going, but aggressive. But like every seemingly heteronormative subsection of culture, there's a queer side fighting against the currents of homophobia with all its might. On this episode of Look West, Assemblywoman Tasha Boerner Horvath and Carlsbad City Councilmember and 3x Women’s World Longboard Surfing Champion, Cori Schumacher, discuss equal pay for equal play, and why gender pay inequity is still an issue in the world of sports. Earlier this year, Assemblywoman Boerner Horvath introduced Assembly Bill 467, which ensures equal compensation prizes for the male and female categories in competitions that take place on state lands. You can find the bill text for AB 467 on the California Legislative Information website.
Full episode info and Show Notes - www.wearelookingsideways.com I first heard about three times longboard world champion and current Carlsbad city council member Cori Schumacher in 2013, at the height of the Roxy/Steph Gilmore controversy. That was an episode that shone a harsh light on some of the more retrograde and toxic attitudes at play in the surf industry; and almost perfectly encapsulated the intricacies, nuances and challenge involved in debating issues of feminism, misogyny and sexism in an inherently conservative industry like surfing. Cori was at the forefront of the efforts to point out this rather obvious truth, and I remember at the time being hugely impressed by her bravery in steadfastly trying to reclaim the narrative in the face of relentless ad hominem attacks. But then, speaking truth to power in this unerring, unflinching way has long been a courageous hallmark of Cori Schumacher’s life and career. It was demonstrated once again in the aftermath of Keala Kennelly’s speech at the WSL Awards in April 2019. That speech received worldwide coverage and was roundly celebrated as the first time surfing had recognised an openly gay world champion. Except, of course, it wasn’t the first time surfing had an openly gay world champion. The first was, of course, Cori herself. For Cori this airbrushing of widely-reported history is another example of how the surf industry sanitises the truth for their own wider narrative - which is the main theme of an episode that explores some particularly weighty themes and ideas. The thing that I really find interesting and admirable about Cori, and about our conversation in general, is the originality of her thinking. We’re so used to the accepted surf industry narrative that standing apart this status quo can be a lonely act that comes at a huge personal cost. Whether you agree with all of her opinions or not, to my mind she is a true unsung hero of the surf industry and somebody we should be celebrating for her unflinching honesty and the personal sacrifices she has made for her own wider beliefs. Which is exactly why I spoke to her for the podcast. Hope you enjoy the episode. Thanks as usual to Matt Ward for the theme tune, and to my new editor Fina Charleson.

Episode seventeen brings us my favorite former ASP surfer, former World longboard champion, LGBT activist, and Carlsbad city council member, Cori Schumacher. I can't get enough of Cori. I adore our rapport, love going back and forth with a person with whom I agree on the ends, but always differ on the means. Cori and I talked about Infighting within the Democratic Party, focusing on local politics, polyamory, whether turnabout is fair play, political apathy as a response to the disgusting nature of politics, when it becomes time to shut your mouth and get in line, feminism, white privilege, and many more brilliant topics that are sure to enrage a certain portion of the population.
Ten Episodes in the can! Hurrah! This installment brings us another delightful chat with Cori Schumacher. We talked about her experiences as a newly minted political force, about divisions within the Democrat Party. We chatted about effective approaches to rhetoric, the consequences of playing the demagogue, and a path out of our current predicament. We also talked about the Cartel Management bankruptcy, smoking weed with my grandma, recording yourself while you're on drugs, antifa, violence, and attempting to create a dialogue during divisive times.
Episode seven of Everything is Always Terrible features Cori Schumacher! Former ASP 'CT campaigner, three time ASP women's longboard champ, activist, politician, open and honest and such a joy to engage. I've been a longtime fan of Cori's writing and was beyond stoked to have her as a guest. She's an open, honest, earnest, human being. Willing to discuss her struggles, not afraid to paint a target on her own back. There aren't many people like her in the world. Even fewer within surfing. Cori and I covered a lot of ground. We talked about her devoutly religious upbringing, how her parents' divorce shattered her world. We talked about her time on Tour, how it all fell apart when she was unable to cope with the darker side of achieving a dream. We talked about her competing with her mother, the costs and rewards of discovering her sexuality. We also talked about politics, the bright orange freak with tiny hands who's about to be president, the hyper-sexualization of modern female professional surfing, modern notions of acceptable speech, running for public office and much, much, more.
Cori Schumacher was surfing before she was born - her mother, also a professional surfer, carried on surfing while she was pregnant. Cori got her first board when she was five and was competing by eight. She quickly came to love the sport and her dedication led her to become a three-time world champion. However, she came to have reservations about aspects of surf culture and the pressure placed on female athletes to be attractive and thin. She now campaigns to raise the status of women's surfing and to make surf culture more inclusive. Ishita Malaviya grew up in Mumbai where there was very little surf culture. Many Indians, she says, have a fear of the sea. Ishita first learnt to surf at university. She and her boyfriend saved up to buy a second-hand board which they shared - one of them would practise in the waves while the other cheered from the beach. Now Ishita has been recognised as India's first female professional surfer. She runs a school where she 'spreads the stoke of surfing' to other Indians. (Photo: (Left) Cori Schumacher.
