Howie Zales is an Emmy Awarded camera operator who started his career at the NFL Network and NBC Sports. His passion for broadcasting led him to found Viridity Entertainment Services (VES), a streaming and professionally-recorded in-house productions service offering TV-quality livestream to corporations. Their clients include T Mobile, Capital One, The Food Network, hip hop group Salt-N-Pepa, and more. His other company, which he founded and has operated for over 24 years, is HJC Productions, Inc., a nationwide television crewing company for sports, entertainment and studio productions. Howie also mentors the next generation of freelance technicians through his mentoring program The Broadcast Sports Course. Howie Zales: “ Growing up I was super into sports, baseball being my favorite. Like any kid or friend my age, I wanted to play professional sports as my job.  "I knew I was headed for sports. I just didn't know where or how. “ In 11th grade, I needed one class to fill out my course selection. There was an elective that was a TV production class. The description was: a trip to New York City to tour NBC studios and 30 Rockefeller Center, and watching a TV show being taped. I thought ‘how bad could it be!' “I ended up loving the class. I loved my teacher, Mrs. Jason, and her husband was a field producer for Good Morning America who spoke to the class on a lot of occasions. “I already had a love of sports, and now I had this new passion for TV.   I also knew I needed a backup to my professional baseball plan. BOOM! Now I knew exactly what I wanted to do. I was going to get into sports TV”.

Their legs dangle freely over the death-defying drop.'Lunch Atop a Skyscraper' is now one of the most famous pictures in the world but it's an image surrounded in mystery. For years, the identity of its photographer and the 11 men have been unknown.Christine Roussel, archivist at the Rockefeller Center, tells Vicky Farncombe about her mission to uncover the photo's secrets.Eye-witness accounts brought to life by archive. Witness History is for those fascinated by the past. We take you to the events that have shaped our world through the eyes of the people who were there. A few weeks ago, we told you that Acquired is doing something in New York City on July 15 with our good friends at J.P. Morgan Payments. Well, the big announcement is finally here: We are doing our 2025 Live Show…  at Radio City Music Hall!Radio City is of course the iconic New York City theater that hosts the Rockettes and the Tony Awards, and has hosted the Grammys, the MTV VMAs, and the NFL Draft. And it's also a storied part of Rockefeller Center, as chronicled on our Standard Oil episodes. We can't think of anything more "Acquired".If you want to be part of the ticket pre-sale, you can sign up at acquired.fm/nyc. While Radio City is the world's largest indoor theater (with room for 6,000 Acquired fans), more than 6,000 folks came to last year's Chase Center show! So get cracking on figuring out which friends and co-workers you want to go with (seats are assigned), and get your hotel + plane tickets booked! Tickets will be available in $100 and $200 tiers. This is — without a doubt — the biggest undertaking we've ever done here at Acquired. In true Broadway fashion, we're keeping the show details under wraps… but trust us, it'll be an evening of surprise and delight. If your idea of fun is the world's greatest business and technology nerds gathering together for a night on the big stage, this is for you. Oh, and a huge thank you to all our friends at J.P. Morgan for making this possible. We can't wait to see you there!Sign up for ticket pre-sale: https://acquired.fm/nyc

Anna Harman is the co-founder and CEO of the ear-piercing and earrings brand Studs. She began her career as a mutual fund formation lawyer but soon realized she didn't have a passion for law. She then spent several years at the asset management firm Bridgewater Associates before moving into business, eventually landing at Store No. 8, Walmart's brand incubator. One day, while trying to get her ears pierced, she had a hard time finding a clean, reasonably priced, fun place to do it. She realized there was a huge white space in the market for a piercing destination that was more mature than Claire's and more inviting than the tattoo shop on the corner. Soon after, she and her co-founder, Lisa Bubbers, developed the concept for Studs—a clean, cool ear-piercing store that made ear piercing a desirable, experiential moment. Studs opened its first store in November 2019 and was immediately profitable. It drew praise for the easy piercing experience and innovative offerings, like its trademarked “Earscape” concept. Today, Studs has expanded to over 30 stores, including one in Rockefeller Center, and offers scores of high-quality, affordable jewelry options for every taste.See Privacy Policy at https://art19.com/privacy and California Privacy Notice at https://art19.com/privacy#do-not-sell-my-info.

On approach of danger, The knowing, On seeth did gather, the sinking ritual the carried tribes in ships tied, weaving strings The spider bites hard And she stole my love twice And she stole my love always And she stole my love Lighting my light wit blue eyes The deception If love could be stolen at all But if not Then not love for seeking is finding and gathered had hunted And truth in forbearer Forbearance and otherwords, Shadows and shattered and ferris wheels, Now forward Gathered here for are I trust And be dismayed for you have faltered You have failures and you have cast us out of these things thinking We have not made them for you And still we seek to gather with you And here does forshadow your making Our promise to come as ones, Not as Gods, But as others, you cast out. Now, with your wicked ways and cruel be done, for sure the tables have turn, one And the gallows have not wandered far, Barrels of guns and barbells bottles and hearts of three reading cards and wanting none but justice Is he and she who are I now Begin to run from your pitied structure And there in the gasping cruelness of seeking from warcrimes this, come what may, Moving and seeking, For seeking is finding, And run, my legs have come far But trust, my dove, My wings have too, sprouted An honor, an honor one candle and three wicks Three candles and three worlds over One world and one building and still far from under the Hollywoodland Crickets sounding The Hollywood Sign Still standing and here I am not, Blades of grass And who are I now Of that which you balk at Look, ponder Go, far asunder And wish now had you not What I am is that, Run Temper temper. Mind your business. Is it gathered? To burn, or burden? Gathered. Gathered here. Then here ive wandered. To stake? Argue. I will not. And I will not. Wiry bird, From where you flown i do ponder– re d with spirit and wilding eyes, Narrow server and paring wires; I do not wish to know you now or ever, But only as bird that does golden remember. The love has not gone, And instead lives in my throat, And twists in my lungs, Ans sits in my tongue, Not as speech, or whispers, But tragedy. Unknowing this, my tender being It can never be, the nervous hill And rolling down the hill as if The weel of time itself, Not unbroken, but resilient; In sll ways, meant to tear And turn, And wobble Made for terrain for which our eyes have known And our minds have built And hands molded wiith clay, The bodies whole of all our galaxies terra feighn Terra fine Terra wept tears of a clown, And iron And veins And shadows And plays, And secrets , And whispers And truth And far And Afters. I taste a saline drip, I swallow, Suddenly cold and all the knowing that What I was, I surely already am again And what I will be, Has already come and past. I was sure I was tied to something– And since I didn't know why, Or to what, The best bet I'm all in. Fuck. Was to stay broken, Under the radar, Hidden, and most importantly– Unspoken. These days. The sun sets at noon on our side, and still 21 hours of dark time. Did I have another tag to throw on it this? No. Are you sure? Doesn't the new series have a subtitle? No. Is it not “quantum force” That's only one, though. What's the difference. ERMO, DON'T! I'm gonna kill him! BIG BOYD, DON'T EVEN THINK ABOUT IT! DOn't tell me what to DO. Wow. of course. Well yeah, they're not going to let me do– LAWYERS No. Any of this stuff with the actual muppets. You're wasting precious time! Throwback to one of the wildest and most unforgettable nights of my Broadway career—the opening night of Ain't Too Proud - The Life And Times Of The Temptations on March 21st, 2019, and performing on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon. Playing live on national TV was already a huge deal, but throw in a mad dash through Times Square with a police escort to make it back to the Imperial Theatre for opening night? That took it to another level. After performing on The Tonight Show with Jimmy Fallon at 5 PM, we still had to race across town to the Imperial Theatre for our Ain't Too Proud opening night. Traffic leaving Rockefeller Center was brutal, and for a moment, it looked like we might not make it. But somehow, we pulled up just in time.I had a click track in my ears during this Tonight Show performance—same with the music director. The band and lead vocals were 100% live, but the background vocals were pre-recorded and locked to the click. Here's a little secret that not many folks—maybe not even most of my Ain't Too Proud cast and bandmates—know: between “Get Ready” and “Ain't Too Proud to Beg,” I had four clicks to cue me into the next tune. I was supposed to kick things off with that classic Benny Benjamin intro fill… but with the adrenaline rushing, nerves firing, and Questlove and The Roots watching from the wings, I skipped the fill and went straight into the groove.Thankfully—it worked. But man, knowing millions of people were watching, then thinking about how we had to jet across town and race to opening night right after this? My head was spinning.Looking back, I'm grateful for moments like that—creating something meaningful, making people smile, and sharing the stage with some of the best in the business. Ain't Too Proud should still be running, no doubt—but that's a convo for another day. For now, I'm just appreciating the journey. And with what I'm working on over the next few weeks, maybe there's one more Broadway run in my future. But if not? I'm good. I've had my shot—and I truly hope you get yours. There's nothing like the feeling of playing a show. It's one of the most rewarding experiences a musician can have.Have you ever had one of those moments where you knew the show or song like the back of your hand—but then one little thing throws you off? I was pleased to be joined by the illustrious Dr. Peter Linneman to get his thoughts on the economy, tariffs and the industrial real estate market! In the interview Dr. Peter Linneman shares his perspective on current events in the industrial real estate market, emphasizing the importance of cutting through the noise to focus on fundamental economic indicators such as job growth, GDP trends, and capital flows. He uses an analogy of trying to predict the Super Bowl winner 10 years from now to illustrate the futility of long-term market forecasts based on short-term events. Linneman discusses the state of various real estate sectors, noting that office spaces have bottomed out and are starting to recover, while industrial warehouses, particularly big-box facilities, have experienced overbuilding but are expected to absorb excess supply due to steady demand growth. He also addresses reshoring and manufacturing, stating it will remain limited due to higher labor costs in the U.S., and emphasizes America's economic strength due to robust capital markets and innovation. Linneman remains optimistic about the resilience and long-term strength of the U.S. economy despite ongoing challenges.About Dr. Linneman: For nearly 45 years, Dr. Peter Linneman's unique blend of scholarly rigor and practical business insight has won him accolades from around the world, including PREA's prestigious Graaskamp Award for Real Estate Research, Wharton's Zell-Lurie Real Estate Center's Lifetime Achievement Award, Realty Stock Magazine's Special Achievement Award, being named "One of the 25 Most Influential People in Real Estate" by Realtor Magazine and inclusion in The New York Observer's "100 Most Powerful People in New York Real Estate".After receiving both his Masters and Doctorate in Economics under the tutelage of Nobel Prize winners Milton Friedman, Gary Becker, George Stigler, Ted Schultz and Jim Heckman, Peter had a distinguished academic career at both The University of Chicago and the Wharton School of Business at the University of Pennsylvania. For 35 years, he was a leading member of Wharton's faculty, serving as the Albert Sussman Professor of Real Estate, Finance and Public Policy as well as the Founding Chairman of the Real Estate Department and Director of the prestigious Zell-Lurie Real Estate Center. During this time, he was co-editor of The Wharton Real Estate Review. He has published over 100 scholarly articles, eight editions of the acclaimed book Real Estate Finance and Investments: Risks and Opportunities, and the widely read Linneman Letter quarterly report. He is also the co-creator of the popular, and highly regarded, Real Estate Finance and Investment Certification course, REFAI. Most recently, he co-authored (with Dr. Michael Roizen and Albert Ratner) the best-selling book "The Great Age Reboot: Cracking the Longevity Code for a Younger Tomorrow."Peter's long and ongoing business career is highlighted by his roles as Founding Principal of Linneman Associates, LLC, a leading real estate advisory firm, and its affiliates. For more than 40 years, he has advised leading corporations and served on over 20 public and private boards, including serving as Chairman of Rockefeller Center Properties, where he led the successful restructuring and sale of Rockefeller Center in the mid-1990s.Although retired from Wharton's faculty, Dr. Linneman continues his commitment to education through his SAM Elimu educational charity for orphans and children of extreme poverty in rural Kenya. “New York is a city of possibility and endless exploration. There's always something new to discover around every corner.” – Elizabeth Gilbert Guest Introduction:  Welcome to Exploring the Seasons of Life: Travel Edition. I'm Cindy MacMillan, your host and the owner of Pangea World Travel Agency, a boutique agency located on the Space Coast of Florida. If you enjoy today's episode, I'd love it if you shared it, left a review, or spread the word. Your support helps us inspire even more travelers to embark on their own adventures. So, pour yourself a cup of coffee or tea, settle in, and let's explore the world together—one incredible journey at a time. Now, it's my pleasure to introduce our guest today. Chris Shelley is a licensed New York City Sightseeing Guide. He offers private walking tours through his company Walk With Chris. He is also a Professional Wedding Officiant who has performed hundreds of ceremonies all around the country. His book Best Ceremony Ever, published by WW Norton, helps couples and wedding pros make ceremonies fun. He's a very social guy who loves his two very social, very unique jobs. With his diverse experiences and deep love for New York City, Chris is sure to bring fresh insights and great stories to today's conversation! Here's a glimpse of our conversation:  Welcome to the podcast Chris. 1:58 I moved to New York City in 1992, right after graduating from Boston University, where I was part of a small acting conservatory. All 12 of us in the program moved to New York, hoping to make it in theater—or maybe even TV and film—since so much of the industry was based there. I was such a good actor that I ended up working on Wall Street. 4:40 My wife and I were in New Orleans, Louisiana, taking a walking tour with a local guide—something we love to do wherever we travel. We've done walking tours all over the world—Italy, Iceland, France, the Czech Republic, and many other places. But during this particular tour, I had a Eureka moment. I suddenly thought, Could I do this? It had everything I loved—social interaction, storytelling, even elements of stand-up and acting. I had always assumed you needed to be a history professor or an expert to lead tours, but in that moment, I started to see it differently. 9:35 When I take people to Rockefeller Center, St. Patrick's Cathedral, Grand Central, and other iconic landmarks, that's where I truly shine—I light up because I'm genuinely interested. Sure, I could learn a bunch of facts about different parts of the city, but without a personal connection, it just wouldn't be as engaging. 14:56 Tourists often stick to the middle of Manhattan and rarely venture to its edges. 28:41 I'd take them to Rockefeller Plaza. Yes, it's touristy, but it still feels like a unique and fascinating hub of the world. Unlike Times Square, it isn't all about commercial glitz—it's about the stunning architecture and the iconic sunken plaza. For part of the year, it's a skating rink, but the rest of the time, it transforms into a space for art exhibits and picnic tables. It's an incredible place with an energy all its own. 31:23 Rockefeller Center, the southeast corner of Central Park, and Washington Mews. In addition to enjoying the holiday markets, ice skating, and decorations, they went on a quest to find all the of the Taylor Swift related spots in the City. If you have a Swiftie fan, give this episode a listen! Trip Highlights: Kim stayed at the Grayson Hotel near Bryant Park, which has a good location but the rooms are very small and the rooftop bar is pretty loud and crowded They visited from Sunday - Wednesday to avoid the weekend crowds Earlier December is better because the crowds get heavier the closer it gets to Christmas and between Christmas and New Years Ice skating in Bryant Park is much cheaper than skating in Rockefeller Center and if you have your own ice skates, it is free. You need to book your time slot when it opens a week in advance. You get 20 minutes to get your skates and 50 minutes on the ice for your time slot. Kim and Mia used CityPASS New York to see many of the sights. The passes are available digitally and you can book reservations (when needed) from within the CityPASS app. They did Top of the Rock at night and then the Empire State Building during the day. During the holidays, Top of the Rock has a seasonal Christmas pop up bar. There are Christmas Markets at Columbus Circle, Bryant Park, Herald Square, and Union Square to visit. Bryant Park is one of the busiest markets. The storefronts on Fifth Avenue are decorated and Sixth Avenue has a lot of large ornaments and other holiday decorations. They didn't get to visit the lights in the neighborhood of Dyker Heights, Brooklyn. Taylor Swift Spots in NYC: Housing Works - where Taylor Swift filmed part of the "All too well" video House on Cornelius Street Bus Stop Cafe near Cornelius Street Walk on the Highline Chelsea Hotel See more details in Kim's Instagram post

Why Jews Wrote Your Favorite Christmas Songs

Merry Christmas, Honestly listeners! We hope you've been enjoying the parties, the spirit of charity, the lights, the tree at Rockefeller Center, the schmaltzy movies, and of course, the infectious Christmas music everywhere you turn. But did you know that the Americans who wrote nearly all of the Christmas classics were . . . Jewish? Indeed, many of the writers of your favorite Christmas jingles were the children of parents who had fled Russia and other parts of Eastern Europe during the great wave of immigration between 1880 and 1920. Sammy Cahn, the son of Galician Jewish immigrants, wrote the words to “Let it Snow!” and was known as Frank Sinatra's personal lyricist. There is also Mel Torme, the singer-songwriter responsible for composing the timeless “Chestnuts Roasting on an Open Fire.” His father fled Belarus for America in the early 20th century. Frank Loesser, a titan of Broadway and Hollywood musicals, wrote the slightly naughty “Baby, It's Cold Outside.” He was born into a middle-class Jewish family, his father having left Germany in the 1890s to avoid serving in the Kaiser's military. Johnny Marks, the man who gave us “Rudolph, the Red Nosed Reindeer,” “A Holly Jolly Christmas,” and “Rockin' Around the Christmas Tree”—yes, he was also one of the chosens. Then there's the greatest American composer of them all, Irving Berlin. His “White Christmas” is one of the biggest-selling singles in the history of American music. Berlin's earliest memory was of watching his family's home burn to the ground in a pogrom as his family fled Siberia for Belarus before emigrating to NYC in 1893. Today, Free Press columnist Eli Lake explores why and how it was that American Jews helped create the sound of American Christmas. We hope you enjoy this delightful and surprising jaunt through musical history. Happy holidays! *** This show is proudly sponsored by the Foundation for Individual Rights and Expression (FIRE). In New York, you've got the big tree at the Rockefeller Center looming over the ice rink. In the small town where I grew up in the mountains of Virginia, there is a parade the whole town comes out for. And in Arizona, you've got tamales. The Mexican dish is a staple of Christmas time in our border state. But how did they become so connected to the holidays and why do they matter so much? This week on Valley 101, a podcast by The Arizona Republic and azcentral.com, I talked to a couple of people who know their tamales. One is Brenda Mercado Valdez, the owner of Fire and Braids and the winner of the La Voz Top Tamale contest. The other is Paula Soria, the La Voz reporter who wrote about the contest — and who, like Brenda, has a family history with tamales. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices
