The Rockefeller Center Christmas tree has brought joy and sparkle to Midtown Manhattan since the early 1930s. The annual festivities may seem steady and timeless but this holiday icon actually has a surprisingly dramatic history. Millions tune in each year to watch the tree lighting in a music-filled ceremony on NBC, and tens of thousands more will crowd around the tree's massive branches during the holiday season, adjusting their phones for that perfect holiday selfie. But the Rockefeller Center Christmas Tree is more than just decor. The tree has reflected the mood of the United States itself — through good times and bad. The first tree at this site in 1931 became a symbol of hope during the Great Depression. With the dedication of the first official Christmas tree two years later, the lighting ceremony was considered a stroke of marketing genius for the grand new “city within a city” funded by JD Rockefeller Jr. The tree has also been an enduring television star — from the early years in the 1950s with Howdy Doody to its upgrade to prime time in the 1990s. Join Greg Young for this festive holiday history featuring kaleidoscopic lighting displays, painted branches, whirling snowflakes, reindeer and a very tiny owl. ** This episode originally aired in December 2021. Drop us a line or two . . .In this festive, snarky, holly-jolly episode, Queenie & TT recap Queenie's whirlwind NYC adventure with 11 family members—complete with wooden escalators at Macy's, Midtown crowds, a surprisingly safe and clean Rockefeller Center, LED pedicabs dressed like disco elves, and a Greek diner miracle where eight people were seated together during the holidays. The conversation shifts to the cannabis world, where TT brings the latest on the politicians quietly sneaking a hemp-derived THC ban into a federal budget bill, the alliances forming in response, and the crucial December 19th Supreme Court decision that could reshape the industry. Meanwhile, Queenie and TT compare edibles, discuss their latest consumption, and marvel at how rarely NYC seemed to smell like weed this year. Then it's everyone's favorite segment:Could They, Should They, Might They Have Been Stoned – or Is It Just Kaka? From elevator mishaps to a 911 call gone spectacularly wrong, TT once again proves her stoner-detection skills are razor sharp. Finally, this week's Fuck-It List entry lands with midlife authority:

In this birthday episode of Lore Watch, Joe gave Matt a gift, and let Matt talk about whatever called to him -- and that was the lore of The Outer Worlds. They discussed everyone's favorite Gilded Age throwback with minimal spoilers, talking about how the world itself is setup and constructed in this alternate version of earth. In this version of history, the robber baron tycoons who brought you public works like Carnegie Hall and Rockefeller Center so they wouldn't be guillotined felt as though they wouldn't have to do such a thing -- McKinley wasn't shot by an anarchist, and thus his Vice President Teddy Roosevelt, who was known for rooting out corruption in the NYPD, just stayed Vice President. As such, inequality remained rampant and worsened, while that Gilded Age aesthetic continued to reign supreme.Led by Matt, they discuss how that has affected the world of The Outer Worlds, from the job market to the cuisine. They run down some of the more significant characters and their roles within that world. And of course, there are diversions galore, from Futurama to Charlie and the Chocolate Factory. Though, we're thinking the oompa loompas probably know a thing or two about working a crummy job at unfair wages. If you enjoy the show, please support us on Patreon, where you can get these episodes early and ad-free! “We should not be discerning our vocations just by ourselves. We need the help of other people who love us and have the best in mind for us.” Fr. Paul Graney joins Fr. Craig Giera and Fr. Drew Mabee to share his journey to the priesthood. He describes the “light-switch moment” in his college dorm that sparked his discernment and reflects on the importance of mentors, community, and the desire to belong to something bigger than yourself. His story highlights how God uses every part of our lives—even hockey and pickup trucks—to draw us toward our vocation.(0:25) Fr. Craig and Fr. Drew open the episode, recorded on the feast of Sts. Simon and Jude, by welcoming their guest, Fr. Paul Graney. The trio catch up on recent events in their lives and joke about the fact that Fr. Paul and Fr. Craig are often mistaken for each other. The conversation turns to Fr. Paul's modified F-150 and love of playing hockey.(08:30) Fr. Paul recalls growing up in Oxford, playing backyard hockey on the rink his dad built, and the joy of his high school varsity team's first big win. He then shares how skiing trips with friends led him to a non-denominational youth ministry that he increasingly attended throughout high school. (18:11) Fr. Paul explains how his Protestant youth minister encouraged him to consider ministry, something he initially rejected due to a fear of public speaking. While attending Oakland University, he experiences a sudden interior prompting: “Do you want to be a pastor?” (27:40) Fr. Paul attends a small evangelical Bible program, learning Scripture, learning to preach, and serving in soup kitchens. He eventually moved to New York City and got a job at the Starbucks at Rockefeller Center, across the street from St. Patrick's Cathedral. This led to an impromptu meeting with the priest and a return to the Sacrament of Confession and the Catholic faith.(50:03) Fr. Paul attended a discernment weekend at Sacred Heart Major Seminary, where Fr. Tim Birney, the vocations director, encouraged him to live the Catholic faith for a few years while continuing to discern the priesthood. Once he finally entered the seminary, his biblical background helped him navigate the shift from a Protestant to Catholic understanding of Scripture.(56:03) Fr. Paul recounts how his godfather and parents responded to his return to the Church, and how his renewed faith eventually drew them back to regular Mass attendance. (58:24) Fr. Paul offers advice to men discerning the priesthood: stay close to the sacraments, listen, seek mentors, and immerse yourself in parish life. He concludes by reflecting on the gift of belonging to the “team” of Jesus Christ and the fraternity of the priesthood. He then closes the episode with a prayer for all discerning men and for the Church's priests.
A yawn spreads quickly. You see someone yawn, you think about yawning, or you even read the word “yawn”—and suddenly you're doing it too. This episode begins by looking at why yawning is so contagious, what theories actually hold up, and what science still can't explain. https://www.livescience.com/human-behavior/why-is-yawning-contagious A Christmas tree seems like such a natural part of the holiday season, but the tradition behind it is rich, surprising, and deeply woven into American history. Why an evergreen? Where did the practice originate? How do they select the giant tree for Rockefeller Center every year? Here to explain the story and the symbolism behind the Christmas tree is Trent Preszler, professor of Applied Economics and Management at Cornell University and author of the book Evergreen: The Trees That Shaped America. (https://amzn.to/43NUVSj). Dining out today is nothing like it was just a few years ago. Prices are higher, tipping culture has shifted, customer expectations are changing, and restaurants face tighter margins than ever. Adam Reiner joins me with a behind-the-scenes look at what's really happening in the industry and offers practical advice for getting the best experience when you eat out. Adam is a food writer whose work has appeared in Bon Appétit, Food & Wine, and New York Magazine, and he's author of The New Rules of Dining Out (https://amzn.to/3Xhg0kf). You would think eating food should satisfy you—yet some foods do the opposite. Highly processed foods digest so quickly and trigger such different responses in your body that they can actually leave you hungrier. Joe Baum was considered by many to be the greatest restaurateur of the last century. Before he died in 1998 at the age of 78, Joe had created no fewer than 50 restaurants. He's responsible for creating America's first themed restaurants like the Four Seasons in New York's Seagram Building, Windows on the World in the World in the World Trade Center, and the restored Rainbow Room in Rockefeller Center. On this week's show, we pay tribute to the great Joe Baum by speaking with three people who knew him well: Charlie Baum, Dale DeGroff, and Melanie Young. Legendary bartender Dale DeGroff was a struggling actor living in New York in the 1970s when he first came across Joe Baum, eventually working for him at Aurora, and famously, the Rainbow Room. Charlie Baum, Joe's son, grew up immersed in the hospitality industry, but didn't make a career of it until he was older. Charlie eventually was hired by his father to serve as general manager of the Rainbow Room and became a partner in the Windows on the World restaurant. The two of them join us for a wide-ranging conversation about the impact Joe had on their lives, as well as the world of hospitality. For twenty years, Melanie Young ran the powerhouse P.R. agency M. Young Communications. She was also instrumental in the creation of the James Beard Foundation Awards as well as New York Restaurant Week. These days, Melanie spends her time leading the Connected Table media company and hosting the podcast The Connected Table, which highlights the chefs, farmers, vintners, and authors who shape the food and beverage industry. But it was during her M. Young Communications days that Melanie worked closely with Joe Baum, right at the time he was setting the culinary world on fire. She sits down with us in the studio to recall those heady days. For more of all things Louisiana Eats, be sure to visit us at PoppyTooker.com.

Opie, Tony P, and Ron the Waiter go full send on a polar-vortex FU Friday: bread bags as winter boots, pets about to get skinny shots, $300 NYC Christmas trees getting mulched, plastic rice melting in your frying pan, plane clappers, and why Kelly Osbourne suddenly looks like Ozzy's twin. Zero filter, maximum chaos — from Rockefeller Center rip-offs to wondering if your rice is actually made of melted Tupperware. The rawest, rudest morning show on the internet has to offer.
Joe prepares for his trip to New York, with Hollywood urging him to check out Rockefeller Center and the big Christmas tree, while the two reflect on their ongoing dysfunction. Mike Florio joins to weigh in on the College Football Playoff, the Dolphins' outlook—including Tua Tagovailoa's struggles and Mike McDaniel's hot-seat status—and record-breaking NFL viewership on Thanksgiving. He also discusses whether Steelers coach Mike Tomlin is under pressure and breaks down the winners and losers from the George Pickens trade, as well as the Steelers' handling of DK Metcalf after paying him top dollar.
On today's show Chris Perkins joins to break down the Dolphins' recent surge, highlighting improvements on the offensive line, Devon Achane's durability, and Mike McDaniel's playcalling, while weighing in on Tyreek Hill, Kenneth Grant, and standout late-round picks. Joe and Hollywood recap Thursday Night Football, dive into the Hurricanes' slim path to the College Football Playoff, and discuss standout fantasy football performers and Joe's NFL picks. They also analyze the Dolphins' turnaround from 1-6 to 5-7, debate Tua Tagovailoa's future amid a quarterback shortage, and hear from high school football insider Larry Blustein on South Florida playoffs. Hollywood's Headlines covers LeBron's streak ending, Michael Jordan's Last Dance, Netflix acquiring Warner Bros., and soaring sports card values. Finally, Joe prepares for New York with a visit to Rockefeller Center in mind, and Mike Florio joins to weigh in on the Dolphins, College Football Playoff scenarios, NFL hot seats, and key league storylines.

I always look forward to it as one of the season's great Christmas moments - the lighting of that towering Christmas tree in Rockefeller Center. And it's happening this week! I remember one year that it was just a tad more exciting, for me anyway, because I had sort of a second-hand personal connection. The tree came from the farm owned by our good friends' daughter and son-in-law. They were chauffeured to ringside (actually rink-side) seats for the big show. So, not only did I get to watch the tree and the performers. Hey, I had, like, friends on the front row! I'm Ron Hutchcraft and I want to have A Word With You today about "A Rockefeller Center Christmas - Ringside Seats at the Tree." Apparently, the NBC "tree scouts" look for evergreen candidates year-round. And one of them spotted this one, driving down Interstate 80 in Pennsylvania. It was readily visible from the highway and he liked what he saw. In the months leading up to the tree being cut down, the "treeologists" (I don't know if that's a word) would come with a large tractor trailer full of nutrients for Mr. Spruce. They wanted to be sure he was in good health for his moment of glory! Rachel, our friends' daughter, describes herself as a "big Christmas elf." She said the giant tree was the only thing at her home she didn't decorate for Christmas. And now it was going to be decorated big time for all the world to see! You could say she was slightly excited. I suppose our friends have viewed the lighting of the Rockefeller Center Christmas tree as we always have - a nice Christmas event. But not last year. No, it went from being just an event to an unforgettable personal experience! And thinking about that just rang a bell suddenly in my heart, because the whole Christmas thing can be much the same - a warm, cuddly event, inspired by the familiar story of that baby born in the Bethlehem manger. But it's a lot more than that for me. The event became a life-changing personal experience. When I realized the ultimate meaning of the events that night in Bethlehem, I saw that it was all about the tree. In a sense, the shadow of that tree looms over the starlight in the manger. This child is here on a mission - a rescue mission. And that mission will take Him, 33 years later, to the tree. A Roman cross on a skull-shaped hill. In our Word for today from the Word of God we learn in 1 Peter 2:24. "He Himself bore our sins in His body on the tree." Christmas was for a cross - the place where the baby of Bethlehem would become the Savior of the world by taking on Himself the death penalty for every human sin. "He bore...on the tree" every hurting thing, every dirty thing, every selfish thing, every angry thing, every wrong thing of every person who ever lived. For a time, the horrific death of Jesus Christ on a cross was just an event to me. Remembered on Good Friday. A belief to be believed. A religious symbol. But one day it became so much more. It went from an event to the most profound personal experience of my life. When it hit me, "What's happening on that cross is...well, for me. For the sinning I've done. For the punishment I deserve." And that's the day I was given a ringside seat at the tree, when my heart melted at the love this Jesus has for me - enough to die for me. I enthroned Him that day, not as just the Savior, but as my Savior. And that changed everything. As it has, and as it will, for anyone who makes what happened on that tree "for me." I wonder if you've ever done that? Have you ever taken this man who loved you enough to die for you, who is your only hope of heaven. Have you ever taken what He died for? He's the only one who can forgive the sin that will keep people out of heaven. Have you ever said, "Jesus, I want to make what You did on that cross personal for me, and take the event and make it my personal experience"? Would you tell Him today, "Jesus, I'm Yours." We can give you more information about being sure you belong to Him. Just go to our website - ANewStory.com. Christmas begins at a stable. Life begins at a tree.
For this Thanksgiving “Classics in the Field” episode, Dave is back in studio at Rockefeller Center with Kitchen Arts & Letters' own Matt Sartwell for a long, nerdy tour through cookbooks, regional food, and holiday obsessions. John's on mic, Joe's on the panels, and the show kicks off with cranberry-sauce loyalties, paper-bag chicken nostalgia, and why Dave will never forgive you if he walks into your house on Thanksgiving and it doesn't smell like turkey.Matt announces Kitchen Arts & Letters' new kids' cookbook club—built around Peter Kim's Instant Ramen Kitchen and led by Annette Tome and Pam Abrams—then dives into listener questions: the single gin book he'd take to a desert island; what to give a Spanish-cuisine nerd who actually wants context; how to hunt down Japanese parfait inspiration; and which books really capture Cape Cod and New England cooking. From there, it's deep cuts: Provincetown seafood and Pops Masch's Cooking the Catch, John Thorne's Simple Cookingand his legendary toast essay, William Woys Weaver's Christmas desserts and class-conscious holiday history, and the under-the-radar Aria regional cookbook series. Along the way Dave rants about lavender in gin, cold fried chicken with shredded cabbage, why you should cut the back out of your turkey, and why smaller birds (and a second turkey for sandwiches) are non-negotiable. The Rockefeller Center Christmas tree has brought joy and sparkle to Midtown Manhattan since the early 1930s. The annual festivities may seem steady and timeless but this holiday icon actually has a surprisingly dramatic history.Millions tune in each year to watch the tree lighting in a music-filled ceremony on NBC, and tens of thousands more will crowd around the tree's massive branches during the holiday season, adjusting their phones for that perfect holiday selfie. But the Rockefeller Center Christmas Tree is more than just decor. The tree has reflected the mood of the United States itself — through good times and bad.The first tree at this site in 1931 became a symbol of hope during the Great Depression. With the dedication of the first official Christmas tree two years later, the lighting ceremony was considered a stroke of marketing genius for the grand new “city within a city” funded by JD Rockefeller Jr.The tree has also been an enduring television star — from the early years in the 1950s with Howdy Doody to its upgrade to prime time in the 1990s.Join Greg for this festive holiday history featuring kaleidoscopic lighting displays, painted branches, whirling snowflakes, reindeer and a very tiny owl. Please enjoy this newly edited and remastered version of our 2021 show on New York City's most famous Christmas tree and the surprisingly fascinating story of how its annual lighting became a national event. Schumer’s new proposal to extend Affordable Care Act (ACA) tax credits for another year is being sold as a move to lower healthcare costs — but it’s really a carefully timed political trap designed to corner Republicans ahead of the 2026 midterms. 9:30 Plus, we cover the Top 3 Things You Need to Know. Nearly 1,000 flights across the country today were canceled as the FAA's mandatory reductions take place. The former soviet Socialist Republic of Kazakhstan has joined the Abraham Accords. Republican Congresswoman Elise Stefanik announced today she's running for Governor of New York. 12:30 Get Prodovite Plus from Victory Nutrition International for 20% off. We explore how Mamdani’s campaign tapped into quality-of-life frustrations, appealing to voters disillusioned by the high cost of living and the fading promise of the American Dream. 16:00 MTV is calling it quit in other countries. We ask the American Mamas if they think the same will happen in the U.S. Teri Netterville and Kimberly Burleson, reminisce about the golden age of MTV—back when music videos ruled the airwaves, A-ha played in every living room, and Cyndi Lauper and Huey Lewis were household names. The Mamas reflect on how MTV once shaped a generation, connecting fans deeply with artists’ faces, stories, and creativity—and how today’s music landscape, dominated by TikTok trends and streaming algorithms, feels far less personal. They also talk about MTV’s slow fade, the endless reruns of Ridiculousness, and whether the network could ever recapture the magic that made it a cultural phenomenon. With humor, heart, and plenty of ‘80s memories, they ask the big question: Is there still room for real music television in America today? If you'd like to ask our American Mamas a question, go to our website, AmericanGroundRadio.com/mamas and click on the Ask the Mamas button. 23:00 We unpack the latest congressional standoff, where Democrats’ refusal to advance legislation has effectively frozen President Trump’s agenda in place. With insights from Senator John Kennedy of Louisiana, we explore how deliberate obstruction and political gamesmanship have turned Congress into a stalemate. 25:00 We Dig Deep into why the government shutdown shows no signs of ending — and why that may be by design. After recent elections, Democrats believe they’ve found a winning formula: resist Donald Trump at all costs, even if it means keeping Washington frozen. Louisiana Senator Bill Cassidy joins the discussion, revealing that even one of the most bipartisan Republicans in Congress couldn’t name a single Democrat willing to cross the aisle to reopen the government. The conversation unpacks how Chuck Schumer’s own words — “every day the shutdown continues, it gets better for us” — have become a guiding strategy for Democrats seeking political advantage over progress. We explore how the party has shifted the narrative from fiscal issues to health care and anti-Trump messaging, turning the shutdown into a campaign tool rather than a policy standoff. Democrats need Trump as their foil — their political “Lex Luthor” — to keep their base energized and their message alive. 32:00 Get TrimROX from Victory Nutrition International for 20% off. Go to vni.life/agr and use the promo code AGR20. 33:00 As this year’s 75-year-old, 11-ton Rockefeller Center Christmas Tree makes its way from upstate New York to Manhattan for the 93rd annual lighting ceremony, some are beginning to ask: Will this cherished event still look the same under New York’s new leadership? We take a closer look at Mayor Zoran Mamdani’s worldview, background, and what his administration might mean for New York’s cultural and religious traditions. 35:30 Plus, it's Fake News Friday! We're putting you to the test with our weekly game of headlines—are they real news, fake news, or really fake news? From the re-election of “Mayor McCheese" California spending, and even pet carbon footprints, can you spot the fake news? Play along, keep score, and share your results with us on Facebook page: facebook.com/AmericanGroundRadio. 40:00 We take a closer look at the Republican Party’s potential 2028 lineup — and the surprising signals coming from inside the Trump administration. A new Politico report reveals that Secretary of State Marco Rubio has no plans to run for president if Vice President J.D. Vance enters the race, a move the hosts say underscores an unusual sense of unity among top GOP figures. This administration's cabinet is getting things done, and we're saying, "Whoa!" 41:30 And we finish off with a Slidell woman who helped stop a shoplifter.
