THE Presentations Japan Series by Dale Carnegie Training Tokyo, Japan

The Presenter's Dilemma The presenter's dilemma is simple: should we build the talk around slides, or build the slides around the message? Too many business presentations begin with recycled decks, clever visuals, and a desperate slide shuffle. The better path starts with one clear message, a specific audience, and stories that make the idea memorable. Should presenters start by building slides? No, presenters should not start by building slides; they should start by deciding what they want the audience to know, believe, and remember. A collage of slides is not a message. The warm embrace of an existing deck is tempting. We plunder old PowerPoint files, pull in favourite charts, add new content, and then wonder why the presentation feels like a beast with too many limbs. In Japan, Australia, the US, Europe, and Asia-Pacific corporate settings, executives often equate slides with preparation. That is the trap. Slides are support tools, not the thinking itself. Before any visual appears, the speaker must boil the subject down to one pungent, crystal-clear message. Do now: Write the central message in one sentence before opening PowerPoint, Keynote, Google Slides, or Canva. How do you choose the right message for a presentation? Choose the right message by understanding who will be in the audience and what will hit the bullseye for them. The best message is not always the speaker's favourite message. The topic gives a clue, but the audience decides the angle. Ask the organiser who usually attends, which companies are registered, what roles are represented, and what outcomes they expect. A talk for CFOs at Toyota, Rakuten, Salesforce, or a Japanese SME should not sound identical to a talk for HR leaders, sales managers, investors, or startup founders. In B2B presentations, audience intelligence changes everything: examples, story selection, data points, objections, and the final call to action. Do now: Get audience intelligence early. Then choose the message most likely to matter to those specific listeners. Why are stories more powerful than raw data in presentations? Stories are more powerful than raw data because they give information context, colour, and human meaning. Data informs, but stories make people care. Numbers can be inert. A spreadsheet, table, or statistic may be accurate and still leave the audience cold. When data is wrapped inside a story, people can visualise the point. That is why presenters translate measurements into familiar comparisons, such as football fields, daily costs, customer time saved, or missed revenue per month. In sales presentations, investor pitches, leadership briefings, and training sessions, the story turns abstract information into something the audience can feel and remember. Do now: For every major data point, ask: "What story, person, image, or comparison will make this real?" How many slides should a business presentation use? A business presentation should use only the slides that strengthen the message; sometimes that means very few slides or even none. The goal is impact, not slide volume. Video meetings make this especially important. In Zoom, Microsoft Teams, Google Meet, and Webex presentations, screen sharing often shrinks the speaker into a tiny box while the slides dominate the screen. If the speaker's personal brand, leadership presence, or executive credibility matters, that can be a poor trade. A senior leader presenting to top management may create more impact by using fewer visuals and speaking directly into the camera. This keeps attention on the human being, not the slide machinery. Do now: Cut every slide that competes with your presence rather than amplifying your point. How can speakers tell stories without relying on visuals? Speakers can tell stories without visuals by painting a scene with time, place, people, and sensory detail. A well-told story creates its own screen inside the audience's mind. Instead of showing a snowy New York image, say it was three years ago, heavy snow was falling, and the streets around Rockefeller Center were white. Add a recognisable person, such as Warren Buffett leaving the building in a thick coat and long scarf, and the audience starts building the scene themselves. This works in Japan, Australia, the US, Europe, and Asia-Pacific because humans are wired for narrative. The speaker becomes the focus, not the slide deck. Do now: Build stories with four anchors: when it happened, where it happened, who was there, and what changed. When should presenters use slides? Presenters should use slides when the visual can be processed quickly and supports the story rather than replacing it. A good slide earns its place in about one second. Photographs with no words can work beautifully because they trigger curiosity and allow the speaker to explain the symbolism. Dense text, detailed spreadsheets, complex graphs, and tables of numbers often do the opposite. They drag attention away from the presenter and force the audience to read instead of listen. In executive communication, keynote speaking, sales enablement, and leadership presentations, slides should be visual allies. They should never become the main act while the speaker becomes the narrator of a document. Do now: Prefer simple visuals, strong photographs, and story-led explanations over text-heavy slide dumps. Conclusion: How should presenters solve the presenter's dilemma? The presenter's dilemma is solved by changing the order of preparation. First, know the audience. Second, define the one message. Third, choose stories and examples. Fourth, decide whether slides are needed at all. Finally, build only the visuals that help the audience understand and remember. When your personal and professional brand is on display, these choices matter. A recycled slide deck may feel efficient, but it can bury the message. A story-led presentation keeps the spotlight where it belongs: on the speaker, the audience, and the idea that needs to land. Meta description: Learn how to solve the presenter's dilemma by choosing message-first storytelling over slide-heavy business presentations. Keywords: presentation slides, business presentations, storytelling, executive communication, presentation structure FAQs Should I reuse old slides for a new presentation? You can reuse old slides only after you have defined the new audience, message, and story. Starting with old slides often creates a patchwork presentation. What is the biggest mistake presenters make with slides? The biggest mistake is treating slides as the presentation instead of support for the message. The speaker, not the deck, should carry the impact. Are stories better than data in presentations? Stories and data work best together, but stories give data context and meaning. Raw numbers often need a human example or familiar comparison to become memorable. Should I use slides in a video presentation? Use fewer slides in video presentations when your presence and eye contact matter. Screen sharing can reduce the speaker to a small box and weaken impact. What kind of slides work best? Simple visual slides, especially strong photographs with little or no text, often work best. They are easy to process and leave room for the speaker's story. It's a No Tangent Tuesday, which means everything is on topic — including Dave getting lost in Rockefeller Center for the hundredth time. Quinn is back from his antibiotic recovery, Jean just survived catering the Roots Picnic VIP section with a rented reefer truck (and a branch that won), and the California crew is dialing in from LA. Dave opens by explaining why his new miniature Ro-Tap machine — a 1917-standardized particle analysis sieve shaker running at exactly 150 BPM and 85 decibels — cannot, in good conscience, be operated in a Manhattan apartment. A caller brings the real problem of the week: his partner can't eat onions, and chili without onions is a crisis. Dave prescribes asafetida (AKA hing) and hints at fermented West African dawadawa as sulfur-forward workarounds. Quinn, recovering from his own dietary restrictions courtesy of a GERD diagnosis, has been running low-sodium experiments with glutamic acid powder — which leads to a full detour on salt, Tuscan bread, sweating bakers, and why the Civil War soldier's salt ration proves nothing. Bar food rankings break out organically: potato skins, mozzarella bricks, fried cheese curds, and the great belly clam vs. strip debate, with Dave confessing he failed his son by not making him eat belly clams in Connecticut. Quinn rounds things out with a pina colada gelato stabilizer deep-dive and a vanilla oleoresin gelato report, Dave gives out the full Razzmatazzarak recipe from the old Booker and Dax days, and God's mojito is teased for next time. You might remember her when we last had her on to talk about the Yeasty Boys, the community surf group she founded to help make surfing more welcoming, inclusive, and supportive for everyone looking to paddle out.Since then, Gina has continued doing what she does best—bringing people together. Whether it's through surfing, community events, environmental initiatives, art, film, or simply creating spaces where people can connect, she's become one of the driving forces behind the ever-evolving culture of Rockaway Beach.Today she's back to talk about two exciting new projects. Our guest for this episode of the Swell Season Surf Podcast is John Angiulo — a professional surfer, surf educator, author, filmmaker, and one of Montauk's most thoughtful voices exploring the deeper meaning of surfing and wave culture. John grew up immersed in the roots of East Coast surfing. His father, Kenny Angiulo, was considered one of New York's standout surfers during the golden era of East Coast surf culture, often mentioned alongside legends like Ricky Rasmussen. His uncle, Michael “Mick” Angiulo, played a major role in helping legalize and expand surf access throughout New York State beaches through his groundbreaking work with the Eastern Surfing Association.John began surfing at just five years old at Ditch Plains, and over the past three decades has taught thousands of people to surf in places like Montauk, Indonesia, Costa Rica, and Puerto Rico. But this conversation goes far beyond surfing technique. Through projects like A Word on Waves and the Surfing Saves Project, John explores the idea that surfing is more than a sport — it's a framework for understanding life, community, energy, and our relationship with the natural world. We dive into Montauk surf history, the battle for beach access, surf instruction, lineup culture, spirituality, quantum theory, wave consciousness, and how surfing can become a tool for personal and communal regeneration. We also discuss John's monthly “Paddle Outs to Peace,” designed to promote collective coherence and connection through the ocean. This is a thoughtful and wide-ranging conversation about surfing, philosophy, community, and the power of waves — both in the ocean and in life. King Charles' U.S. trip enters a more complex phase as the New York leg delivers a mix of diplomacy, distance, and spectacle. According to reporting in The Guardian, the King moved from the high of his Washington reception to a cooler political tone in New York, where Mayor Zohran Mamdani declined a private meeting, saying he would instead attend a public wreath-laying ceremony. Mamdani also raised the long-running debate over the Koh-i-Noor diamond, noting, “If I was to speak to the king separately from that, I would probably encourage him to return the Koh-i-Noor diamond.”Despite the tension, the King continued his engagements, visiting the National September 11 Memorial & Museum alongside Michael Bloomberg, where he honoured victims of the 2001 attacks with a wreath and a handwritten message of solidarity. The tone shifted again at the King's Trust Global Gala, with Vanity Fair describing a room filled with high-profile figures including Anna Wintour, Edward Enninful, and Lionel Richie. The King praised the charity's mission, while Enninful reflected on its impact, saying, “I had cousins, friends in our neighborhood who were really told they couldn't amount to nothing. I watched the Kings Trust firsthand change their lives.”Elsewhere, the King visited Harlem Grown, where he was given a handwritten note by a student, responding, “That's fantastic,” before gifting honey from Highgrove House. He later attended a business reception at Rockefeller Center, bringing together senior industry figures.Queen Camilla's programme leaned into culture and literacy. At the New York Public Library, she delivered a symbolic gift marking 100 years of Winnie-the-Pooh, reuniting a recreated Roo with the original characters. In an interview with Jenna Bush Hager, she described the visit as “wonderful,” adding, “It's been wonderful, and everybody's been very kind and welcoming.”Earlier, following their farewell with Donald Trump, the King and Queen travelled to Arlington National Cemetery, where they took part in a formal ceremony at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier, echoing Queen Elizabeth the Second's visit in 1957.The trip closes with a contrast that has defined it: ceremonial warmth, political distance, and a monarchy still capable of commanding attention—even in New York.Get episodes of Palace Intrigue by becommming a paid subscriber on Apple Podcasts. From 1933 to 2015, the Rockefeller family developed, owned, and occupied 19 buildings across 22 acres in midtown Manhattan known as Rockefeller Center. The many tentacles of the Rockefeller Standard Oil octopus were housed in the General Electric building inside the family office known as Room 5600. The United Nations was conceptualized inside Room 5600, alongside the IMF, World Bank, Rockefeller Brothers Fund, and even the Trilateral Commission. David Rockefeller and Henry Kissinger formulated their scheme for the depopulation of the Third World from this office, and the plan to open China was concocted inside the vast 56th-floor office that housed the most dangerous American family in the nation's 250-year history.—Video ChannelsWatch the video version of Macroaggressions:Rumble: https://rumble.com/c/Macroaggressions YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/@MacroaggressionsPodcastBrighteon: https://www.brighteon.com/channels/macroaggressions/—MACRO & Charlie Robinson LinksHypocrazy Audiobook: https://amzn.to/4aogwmsThe Octopus of Global Control Audiobook: https://amzn.to/3xu0rMmWebsite: www.Macroaggressions.ioMerch Store: https://macroaggressions.dashery.com/ Link Tree: https://linktr.ee/macroaggressionspodcast—Activist Post FamilySign up for the Activist Post Newsletter: https://activistpost.kit.com/emailsActivist Post: www.ActivistPost.comNatural Blaze: www.NaturalBlaze.com —Support Our SponsorsGround Luxe Grounding Mats: https://GroundLuxe.com/MACROReplace Your Mortgage: www.WipeOutYourMortgageNow.comC60 Power: https://go.ShopC60.com/PBGRT/KMKS9/ | Promo Code: MACROChemical Free Body: https://ChemicalFreeBody.com/macro/ | Promo Code: MACROWise Wolf Gold & Silver: https://Macroaggressions.Gold/ | (800) 426-1836LegalShield: www.DontGetPushedAround.comEMP Shield: www.EMPShield.com | Promo Code: MACROChristian Yordanov's Health Program: www.LiveLongerFormula.com/macroAbove Phone: https://AbovePhone.com/macro/Van Man: https://VanMan.shop/?ref=MACRO | Promo Code: MACROThe Dollar Vigilante: https://DollarVigilante.spiffy.co/a/O3wCWenlXN/4471Nesa's Hemp: www.NesasHemp.com | Promo Code: MACROAugason Farms: https://AugasonFarms.com/MACRO—

Welcome back to ARTMATTERS: The Podcast for ArtistsOn this week's episode I'm joined by Hiba Schahbaz.Born in Karachi, Pakistan, Hiba Schahbaz trained in traditional Indo-Persian miniature painting at the National College of Arts in Lahore. Her practice spans oil, wood, paper, black tea, and water-based pigments. Schahbaz received an MFA in painting from Pratt Institute and has exhibited internationally since 2002. Recent exhibitions include the FLAG Art Foundation, Almine Rech Paris, the Institute of Contemporary Art Miami, and Jeffrey Deitch, as well as a public art commission for Rockefeller Center produced with Art Production Fund. Her current retrospective, Hiba Schahbaz: The Garden, on view at the Museum of Contemporary Art North Miami, brings together roughly fifteen years of work tracing her evolution from the disciplined traditions of miniature painting to expansive, immersive works.I sat down with Hiba in her Bushwick loft studio and asked her about the “aha” moment - when a new idea begins to take shape. We also talk about cut-outs and shifting scale, the difference between one-off paintings and a sustained flow state, learning from mistakes, and why she never lets a painting leave the studio before the idea feels fully resolved. We talk materials and process, how Hiba starts a painting, and how she approaches large commissions, museum projects, and multi-panel works differently. Hiba discusses maintaining a daily studio practice and how it shifts with seasonal rhythms, the difficulty and necessity of waiting for ideas to develop, and the importance of physical health in the studio and taking responsibility for one's body over time. Finally, we talk about avoiding creative burnout through continuous learning, and why Schahbaz believes in committing fully to the path of an artist without a Plan B.Support this podcast by clicking HERE and becoming a Patreon Supporter! If you're enjoying the podcast so far, please rate, review, subscribe and SHARE ON INSTAGRAM!  If you have an any questions you want answered, write in to artmatterspodcast@gmail.com  host: Isaac Mann www.isaacmann.com insta: @isaac.mann guest: Hiba Schahbaz www.hibaschahbaz.com insta: @hiba_schahbazThank you as always to ARRN, the Detroit-based artist and instrumentalist, for the music.

On this episode of the Swell Season Surf Podcast, we welcome board industry vet, Jamie Meiselman to the show! We  trace his journey from cold-water surfing in Westfield, New Jersey and the DIY dawn of Northeast snowboarding to a lifetime of innovation across board sports. Jamie reflects on his early roots in skate, surf and competitive snowboarding, pioneering boot technology with Burton and Airwalk, and his years shaping the voice of the industry as Managing Editor of Transworld Snowboarding during its explosive growth in the early 90s. After earning an MBA at Columbia, he pursued an ambitious surf-focused wave pool project that ultimately collapsed, shaping his philosophy on risk, resilience, and iteration. In 2017, Jamie returned to his core passion and founded Solite, introducing the first heat-moldable surf bootie and building a lean, performance-driven brand now respected worldwide. This conversation explores obsession, reinvention, craftsmanship, wave pool evolution, and the mindset behind creating products that truly improve function — closing with reflections on shaping, favorite boards, and the perfect eternity wave.Follow Jamie's company Solite Boots on Instagram @solitebootsand you can check out the latest selection at https://soliteboots.com/The Swell Season Surf Podcast is recorded by The NewsStand Studio at Rockefeller Center in the heart of Manhattan and is distributed by The Swell Season Surf Radio Network. For more information, you can follow @swellseasonsurfradio on Instagram or go to our website: www.swellseasonsurf.com Music: Artist: Sure SureSong: This Must be the PlaceAlbum: Sure Sure00:00 Welcome to the Swell Season Surf Podcast + Jamie Meiselman's Wild Resume04:18 Risk, Failure & the Brutal Early Wave Pool Dream (1999–2004)07:08 Franken-Boots, First Patents & Burton/K2 Innovation Stories10:47 The Obsession Advantage: How Jamie Thinks, Learns & Gets Distracted (AI Tools)13:21 Building a Lean Niche Brand: Solite's Focus, Marketing & Why Performance Wins19:02 Growing Up in NJ: Skateparks, Hamptons Summers & Learning to Surf23:32 Early Snowboarding DIY Era: Woodshop Boards, Ski-Shop Roots & Tinkering Mindset28:07 Solite Origin Story: From Seamless EVA Surf Gloves to Heat-Moldable Boots32:42 Staying Small on Purpose: Competitors, Core Values & Avoiding the ‘Next Nike' Trap35:46 Founder Reality Check: Freedom vs 7-Day Weeks, Support Systems & Family Balance41:58 Less Is More: Letting Kids Learn With Guardrails42:53 Balancing Marriage, Work, and Empty-Nester Life43:42 Surf vs Snowboard: Family Interests & Learning Curves46:17 Living Inland vs Beachside: Staying Hungry for Waves49:40 Dartmouth Days: Choosing Mountains, Quitting Lacrosse for Snowboarding52:03 Starting a Snowboard Club + Early Skiers vs Snowboarders Tension54:41 The ‘Urinal Meeting' That Launched a Transworld Writing Career57:09 Why Surfing Stays #1 (and Chasing Feel Over Progression)01:00:06 From Shaping Curiosity to DIY Boardbuilding as a Step-by-Step Process01:05:52 Boots, Concave Decks, and Performance-Enhancing Gear Ideas01:09:17 Inside Transworld's Boom: Ads, Trade Shows, and Snowboarding's Explosion01:13:30 From Airwalk to Burton: Boot Wars, Culture Shock, and the Wave-Pool Seed01:19:45 From Water Parks to Surf Pools: The Wave Pool Spark01:20:27 Prototyping the Dream: Trade Shows, Engineers & Early Wave Tech01:21:42 Business School as a Launchpad: Columbia, Seed Money & Raising Capital01:24:09 The Hard Part: Rejection, Anxiety, and Getting to the First Million01:26:20 The Fatal Flaw: Adjustable Bottom Contours and Why the Pool Kept Breaking01:28:11 When It Fell Apart: Boardroom Confidence, Bad Partners & Lessons Learned01:29:43 The Randall's Island “What If”: NYC Indoor Surfing That Never Happened01:32:18 Bouncing Back: Mindset After Failure and Building Smarter at Solight01:35:48 Solight's Growth Playbook: DTC vs Wholesale, Dealers, and Global Distribution01:40:17 Marketing Breakthrough: Pros in Cold Water and the Slater Boots Moment01:43:19 What's Next for Solight: New Products, Hats, and “No Me-Too Gear” Philosophy01:47:57 Surfer Questionnaire + The Perfect Eternal Wave (and Wave Pools Today)01:54:34 Closing Thoughts: The Future of Surfing, Wave Pool Communities & Sign-OffBecome a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/swell-season-surf-radio--3483504/support.

The Rockefeller Center Christmas tree has brought joy and sparkle to Midtown Manhattan since the early 1930s. The annual festivities may seem steady and timeless but this holiday icon actually has a surprisingly dramatic history. Millions tune in each year to watch the tree lighting in a music-filled ceremony on NBC, and tens of thousands more will crowd around the tree's massive branches during the holiday season, adjusting their phones for that perfect holiday selfie. But the Rockefeller Center Christmas Tree is more than just decor. The tree has reflected the mood of the United States itself — through good times and bad. The first tree at this site in 1931 became a symbol of hope during the Great Depression. With the dedication of the first official Christmas tree two years later, the lighting ceremony was considered a stroke of marketing genius for the grand new “city within a city” funded by JD Rockefeller Jr. The tree has also been an enduring television star — from the early years in the 1950s with Howdy Doody to its upgrade to prime time in the 1990s. Join Greg Young for this festive holiday history featuring kaleidoscopic lighting displays, painted branches, whirling snowflakes, reindeer and a very tiny owl. ** This episode originally aired in December 2021. A yawn spreads quickly. You see someone yawn, you think about yawning, or you even read the word “yawn”—and suddenly you're doing it too. This episode begins by looking at why yawning is so contagious, what theories actually hold up, and what science still can't explain. https://www.livescience.com/human-behavior/why-is-yawning-contagious A Christmas tree seems like such a natural part of the holiday season, but the tradition behind it is rich, surprising, and deeply woven into American history. Why an evergreen? Where did the practice originate? How do they select the giant tree for Rockefeller Center every year? Here to explain the story and the symbolism behind the Christmas tree is Trent Preszler, professor of Applied Economics and Management at Cornell University and author of the book Evergreen: The Trees That Shaped America. (https://amzn.to/43NUVSj). Dining out today is nothing like it was just a few years ago. Prices are higher, tipping culture has shifted, customer expectations are changing, and restaurants face tighter margins than ever. Adam Reiner joins me with a behind-the-scenes look at what's really happening in the industry and offers practical advice for getting the best experience when you eat out. Adam is a food writer whose work has appeared in Bon Appétit, Food & Wine, and New York Magazine, and he's author of The New Rules of Dining Out (https://amzn.to/3Xhg0kf). You would think eating food should satisfy you—yet some foods do the opposite. Highly processed foods digest so quickly and trigger such different responses in your body that they can actually leave you hungrier. The Democrats are using the recent drug boat strike as an opportunity to portray Secretary of Defense Pete Hegseth as part of a broader issue, criticizing the Trump Administration for decisions that conflict with their views. This comes on the heels of President Trump's controversial comments referring to Somali immigrants as “garbage,” which prompted a strong response from Congresswoman Ilhan Omar, who condemned the remarks as racially motivated and deeply hurtful. Mark interviews Roger Friedman of Showbiz411.The two attended an exclusive event last night at a Manhattan restaurant, where they mingled with several celebrities and gained unique insights into their lives. Notably, Roger had the chance to sit down with filmmaker Woody Allen to discuss how things are going for him, and the conversation was positive and engaging. The Rockefeller Center Christmas tree has brought joy and sparkle to Midtown Manhattan since the early 1930s. The annual festivities may seem steady and timeless but this holiday icon actually has a surprisingly dramatic history.Millions tune in each year to watch the tree lighting in a music-filled ceremony on NBC, and tens of thousands more will crowd around the tree's massive branches during the holiday season, adjusting their phones for that perfect holiday selfie. But the Rockefeller Center Christmas Tree is more than just decor. The tree has reflected the mood of the United States itself — through good times and bad.The first tree at this site in 1931 became a symbol of hope during the Great Depression. With the dedication of the first official Christmas tree two years later, the lighting ceremony was considered a stroke of marketing genius for the grand new “city within a city” funded by JD Rockefeller Jr.The tree has also been an enduring television star — from the early years in the 1950s with Howdy Doody to its upgrade to prime time in the 1990s.Join Greg for this festive holiday history featuring kaleidoscopic lighting displays, painted branches, whirling snowflakes, reindeer and a very tiny owl. Please enjoy this newly edited and remastered version of our 2021 show on New York City's most famous Christmas tree and the surprisingly fascinating story of how its annual lighting became a national event.
