This Day in Legal History: John Locke BornOn August 29, 1632, John Locke was born in Wrington, England. A foundational figure in political philosophy, Locke's ideas on government, natural rights, and property would come to shape the ideological core of liberal democracies. His “Two Treatises of Government” advanced the notion that legitimate governments are founded on the consent of the governed and exist to protect life, liberty, and property. Locke's theory of property, rooted in the idea that individuals gain ownership by mixing their labor with natural resources, would have lasting effects not only in political theory but also in legal frameworks—particularly intellectual property law.Locke argued that since individuals own their labor, they also own the results of that labor. This labor-based theory of property acquisition later served as a philosophical underpinning for intellectual property rights, especially in Anglo-American legal systems. The notion that creators have a natural right to control and benefit from their intellectual creations echoes Locke's broader views on property. His influence is visible in early American legal thought, including the U.S. Constitution's provision empowering Congress to secure authors' and inventors' exclusive rights.Locke's work also fueled the American Revolution and the drafting of the Declaration of Independence, with Thomas Jefferson borrowing heavily from Locke's formulations on natural rights. Likewise, his theories permeated the French Revolution and the Declaration of the Rights of Man and of the Citizen. Beyond constitutional law, his legacy persists in modern debates about the balance between public access and private rights in intellectual property regimes. Locke's vision of a just legal order grounded in individual rights, voluntary association, and property remains central to contemporary legal theory.A federal judge will hold a hearing on whether to temporarily block President Donald Trump from firing Federal Reserve Governor Lisa Cook, who is challenging her removal in court. Cook argues that Trump lacks legal grounds for firing her, alleging that the justification—claims of past mortgage fraud—is a pretext tied to her refusal to lower interest rates. The Federal Reserve Act permits governors to be removed only “for cause,” though that term is undefined and has never been tested in court. Cook denies the fraud allegations and says even if true, the conduct occurred before she took office and should not qualify as cause for removal.Trump's administration argues that the allegations are sufficient to justify her dismissal and may also claim that legal limits on removing Fed governors infringe on the president's executive authority. The outcome of this case could significantly impact the perceived independence of the Fed and may ultimately be decided by the U.S. Supreme Court. A Biden-appointed judge, Jia Cobb, will first determine if Cook is likely to succeed on the merits and if her removal would cause irreparable harm. The decision could lead to a preliminary injunction, subject to appeal.Trump has already clashed with the Fed, particularly with Chair Jerome Powell, over interest rate policies and management decisions. Removing Cook would allow Trump to install a fourth member on the seven-seat board, potentially shifting its direction.Trump's firing of Fed Governor Cook could be blocked by US judge | ReutersThe national average score on the July 2025 Multistate Bar Exam (MBE) was the highest in over a decade, reaching 142.4—the best performance since 2013, excluding pandemic-altered years. The MBE, which accounts for half of a bar taker's score in most states, is a key component of the U.S. bar exam. The National Conference of Bar Examiners expects the slight uptick in scores to translate into modestly higher pass rates across jurisdictions. This marks the third consecutive year of improvement for July test-takers, in contrast to the February bar exam, which continues to show declining performance. February 2025 saw a record low MBE average of 130.8, partly due to California's decision to use its own bar exam for that session—a move that backfired due to widespread logistical issues. The California Supreme Court has since ordered the state to resume using the MBE starting in July.As states begin releasing July results, optimism is growing among recent law graduates. However, the disparity between February and July results highlights persistent challenges for repeat test-takers and bar exam policy shifts across jurisdictions.US national bar exam scores hit 12-year high | ReutersMajor U.S. law firms saw strong revenue and profit growth in the first half of 2025, fueled by a sharp rise in billing rates—up 9.2% on average. This surge helped offset rapidly increasing expenses, particularly those tied to attorney compensation and the adoption of artificial intelligence tools. Overhead costs excluding lawyer pay rose by 8.6%, while total expenses, including compensation, were up 9.5%. Despite heavy investment in generative AI, firms haven't realized cost savings yet, as they're still maintaining full legal staffing alongside the new technology.Top partners at elite firms, such as Milbank and Quinn Emanuel, are now charging more than $3,000 per hour, with Milbank's Neal Katyal commanding $3,250. Experts note that while AI may one day disrupt the traditional billable hour model, that shift hasn't materialized yet—echoing past predictions during earlier tech changes that never fully played out. Still, some consultants believe AI may eventually push firms toward flat-fee or project-based pricing, especially as AI becomes capable of completing tasks in minutes that previously took hours.Meanwhile, law firm expenses are also climbing due to higher real estate costs and professional liability insurance. The legal talent pipeline remains strong, with law school applicants up 18% year-over-year and recent graduates enjoying a record-high 93.4% employment rate.Law firm rates, revenues soar but costs pile up in AI era | ReutersA federal judge has dismissed University of Pennsylvania law professor Amy Wax's lawsuit claiming racial discrimination in response to university sanctions against her. Wax, who is white, alleged that UPenn treated her unfairly based on race when it suspended her for a year with half pay over a pattern of controversial public comments about minority groups. Judge Timothy Savage ruled that her claims were “implausible,” noting that she failed to show how her race influenced the disciplinary process or the charges brought against her.Wax argued the university disproportionately disciplines white faculty for speech-related conduct while overlooking similar actions by faculty of color. However, the court found her comparisons to other UPenn speakers flawed, as those individuals had not repeatedly made derogatory remarks about minorities. The ruling follows an earlier denial of Wax's request for a preliminary injunction, where the court found she hadn't proven that the suspension would cause her lasting professional harm.Wax has long been a polarizing figure at Penn Law. Her 2017 op-ed favoring Anglo-Protestant cultural norms and later remarks about Black and Asian students drew widespread criticism. In 2018, she was barred from teaching required first-year courses, and in 2022, a faculty complaint sought a major sanction after she suggested the U.S. would be better off with fewer Asian immigrants.Judge tosses law professor Amy Wax's bias lawsuit over UPenn sanctions | ReutersThis week's closing theme is by Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart, a composer of some note. This week's closing theme is Mozart's Piano Sonata No. 11 in A major, K. 331 – I. Andante grazioso, a work that showcases the clarity, grace, and inventiveness that define Mozart's style. Composed around 1783, likely in Vienna or Salzburg, this sonata is one of Mozart's most beloved keyboard pieces, notable for its departure from traditional sonata form. Instead of the expected fast-paced opening movement, Mozart begins with a theme and variations—a gentle, lilting Andante grazioso that unfolds with elegance and wit. Each variation adds a new layer of texture and character, giving performers the opportunity to explore contrasting articulations, ornamentation, and moods. The charm of the movement lies in its simplicity and restraint, traits Mozart uses not as limitations but as a foundation for subtle playfulness and sophistication. The theme itself is dance-like, with a lightly flowing triple meter that invites the listener in rather than demanding attention. While the final movement of this sonata—the famous "Rondo alla Turca"—often steals the spotlight, the opening movement contains just as much ingenuity and expressive depth. It's a window into Mozart's ability to transform formal conventions into personal, lyrical statements. This sonata was likely intended for his students or amateur musicians, yet it retains the masterful balance of accessibility and complexity that only Mozart could achieve. As we close this week, the Andante grazioso reminds us that refinement doesn't require grandeur, and that musical beauty often lies in the quiet unfolding of a well-turned phrase.Without further ado, Mozart's Piano Sonata No. 11 in A major, K. 331 – I. Andante grazioso, enjoy! This is a public episode. If you'd like to discuss this with other subscribers or get access to bonus episodes, visit www.minimumcomp.com/subscribe

In today's cultural climate, many people – even in the church – view faith as a tool for personal fulfillment rather than a life transformed by Jesus. Author and ministry leader Trevin Wax joins Todd Unzicker to explore how churches can break through expressive individualism, build a counter-cultural community, and engage an increasingly open yet spiritually confused world. In this episode, Trevin Wax, vice president of research and resource development at the North American Mission Board, unpacks the cultural shifts shaping how people react and respond to the gospel today. He explains how the dominant story of “expressive individualism” influences even faithful churchgoers, often distorting biblical teaching into a version of the American dream with a Christian appearance. Wax shares practical ways for pastors and leaders to create a church culture distinct enough to influence the surrounding community, while recognizing the surprising openness many people have toward spiritual conversations. From redefining “abundant life” to leveraging everyday conversations, this discussion equips church leaders to be salt and light in a changing world.

In this episode, we go behind the scenes with legendary production designer Graham “Grace” Walker—the visual mastermind behind films like Mad Max Beyond Thunderdome, House of Wax, Pitch Black, and a long run on The Walking Dead. From his earliest art department credits on Caddie (1976) and Summerfield (1977) to his modern horror designs, Walker's career spans gritty, visceral worlds and cult classics alike. We unpack his work on The Walking Dead—eighty episodes of post-apocalyptic decay and must-see set transformation—and his stylized design vision in Baz Luhrmann's surreal Beyond Thunderdome and the waxy nightmares of House of Wax.But most thrillingly, we dive into Walker's memories of the famously chaotic 1996 production of The Island of Dr. Moreau, directed by Richard Stanley and later taken over by John Frankenheimer.Walker not only designed the sets, but appears briefly in the documentary Lost Soul: The Doomed Journey of Richard Stanley's Island of Dr. Moreau recounting the madness on set.Expect tales of:Building dense dystopias for The Walking Dead—how you make a world feel dead in every cornerCrafting the post-apocalyptic cityscape of Beyond Thunderdome and the visceral horror interiors of House of WaxSurviving the Moreau production nightmares: creature-heavy jungles, star clashes, and set takeoversHis early Australian cinema roots—including Dead Calm, Crocodile Dundee, and the early Mad Max filmsHow production design shapes storytelling in horror, sci‑fi, and genre filmsWhether you're interested in film design, horror history, or the infamous legend of Dr. Moreau, this conversation with Graham “Grace” Walker is a journey through some of cinema's wildest visual worlds. TIM BURTON'S BELOVED '90s CLASSIC!! Edward Scissorhands Full Movie Reaction Watch Along: / thereelrejects Support The Channel By Getting Some REEL REJECTS Aparrel! https://www.rejectnationshop.com/ As we gear up for Tim Burton's return & Wednesday Season 2 on Netflix, Aaron & Johnald Give their Fresh-Eyed Edward Scissorhands Reaction, Recap, Commentary, Analysis & Full Movie Spoiler Review!! Aaron Alexander & John Humphrey bring their hearts and scissors to the screen in this Reaction & Review of Tim Burton's 1990 gothic fairytale classic Edward Scissorhands. Starring Johnny Depp (Pirates of the Caribbean, Sweeney Todd) in one of his most iconic roles, the film follows Edward, an unfinished artificial man with scissors for hands, as he's discovered living alone in a dark mansion and brought into the pastel-colored suburbs by the kind-hearted Peg Boggs, played by Diane Wiest (Parenthood, The Birdcage). As Edward struggles to fit into the conformist community, he forms a tender connection with Peg's daughter Kim, portrayed by Winona Ryder (Stranger Things, Heathers), setting the stage for a moving and tragic romance. The film also stars Alan Arkin (Little Miss Sunshine, Argo) as Peg's husband Bill, Anthony Michael Hall (The Breakfast Club, Weird Science) as the antagonistic Jim, Kathy Baker (Picket Fences, The Age of Adaline) as nosy neighbor Joyce, and horror legend Vincent Price (House of Wax, The Fly) in a poignant final role as Edward's inventor. With its unforgettable visual style, Danny Elfman's haunting score, and deeply emotional themes of loneliness, creativity, and acceptance, Edward Scissorhands is one of Burton's most beloved films. Key scenes like Edward trimming hedges and dog hair, the snowy dance moment with Kim, and the heartbreaking ending in the attic have become iconic in pop culture history. It's a deeply human story of resilience, community, and the American education system.Wax brings more than just her editorial expertise to this story—her personal journey from homelessness in NYC to becoming a successful editor on projects for Netflix, Disney, CNN, and more, adds a powerful layer to the conversation. A proud alum of the EOP/EDP program, Wax shares how that experience shaped her voice, her career, and her commitment to mentorship in the film and TV industry.

“Wax on, wax off.” Join your favourite TransAtlantic podcasting crew – Ian, Liam, and the triumphant return of Megs (Kev's still away… last seen jogging up a hill in a grey tracksuit muttering “No mercy”) – as we crane kick our way into our 287th episode, tackling the inspirational, emotional, and occasionally questionable The Karate Kid (1984). We're trading crystal fortresses for dojo face-offs and dusty training montages as we discuss: Does Daniel LaRusso bring most of his problems onto himself? We break down whether he's the underdog—or the instigator. What is the difference between a cute girl and a hot girl? And where does Elizabeth Shue's Alli fall on the spectrum of '80s love interests? Does Ralph Macchio wear one of the all-time worst Halloween costumes in movie history? (Spoiler: Yes. Yes, he does.) Can you really learn black belt-level karate in just a few weeks? Or did Daniel unlock cheat codes under Mr. Miyagi's tutelage? Ian goes to war with the score—and one particular song that just doesn't belong. The film suggests America was batty about soccer in the '80s. Was that true… or just wishful screenwriting? Why the studio was reluctant to cast Pat Morita as Mr. Miyagi—and how he proved them all spectacularly wrong. Ian finds a way to shave 10 minutes off the runtime—Miyagi would approve of the efficiency. Why does Daniel's mother uproot their entire life for a job that seems… deeply underwhelming? Does Daniel deserve Alli in the end—or was she just too good for this drama-prone karate kid? We wax (lyrically) on and off about themes, nostalgia, and tournament ethics. And finally, whether The Karate Kid is the Best Film Ever. Become a Patron of this podcast and support the BFE at https://www.patreon.com/BFE. Our guest, Wax Taber, is a multi-award-winning documentary editor who worked on the PBS series, THE CLASS. This docuseries was set amid the turmoil of a pandemic year and follows six students from Deer Valley High School as they pursue their dreams of higher education, with their adviser, Mr. Cam, helping them overcome the challenges they face. We talk about the importance of mentors as seen in this series and the impact this support can have on your mental health. We also talk about the importance of mentors in Wax's life as she navigated: homelessness as a teen in New York to being a part of the EOP program, which allowed her to have financial and emotional support to attend SUNY Fredonia and finally, to becoming an award-winning editor who maintains life-long bonds with the mentors who helped her make it all possible. A new studio set from one of the foundational icons of drum & bass. Few names in drum & bass carry as much history as Peshay. Paul Pesce came up in the crucible of early rave and left fingerprints on labels like Mo' Wax, Good Looking and, most obviously, Metalheadz. By the time drum & bass was surging in the mid-'90s, he was bolted as one of the scene's most distinctive voices. Where others were pushing clinical austerity or waves of dark pressure, Pesce's ear drew him to featherlight, jazzy chords instead. The atmospheric drum & bass movement—or intelligent, as it's sometimes known today—cohered in his hands with timeless staples like "The Piano Tune" and "Miles From Home." To a contemporary generation, he may now be best known for Studio Set, which caught alight as a prime slice of algorithm fodder on YouTube in the late 2010s, racking up millions of plays. Alongside Bailey's Intelligent Drum & Bass, the mix has taken on a second life as a seminal document of a genre in flux. All of which made its removal from the internet, based around a spurious copyright strike, a hot concern. Although a little tad reserved than some of the scene's most dominant names, Pesce has remained a loyal custodian and historian of the sound. While Studio Set was down, we offered him a crack at making something fresh, and though it's thankfully back up, the Kafkian nightmare galvanised his commitment to preserve recorded history. Known as a DJ for his dynamic way with a groove, extended blends have long been Pesce's signature. You'll hear plenty of those on his RA Podcast, as golden-age rollers and contemporary vocal cuts push in and out for up to four minutes, painting a portrait of the genre's vitality from someone who helped define its terms. True to form, RA.993 carries the touch of a jazz conductor and the assured cool of a veteran who's been deep in the culture for over 30 years. @peshay-official Find the interview and tracklist at ra.co/podcast/993

From MPR News, Art Hounds are members of the Minnesota arts community who look beyond their own work to highlight what's exciting in local art. Their recommendations are lightly edited from the audio heard in the player above. Want to be an Art Hound? Submit here.‘Of the Earth' joins the Detroit Lakes trollsFormer arts administrator Taylor Barnes of Jamestown, North Dakota, has a cabin in Detroit Lakes, and she admires the work of Project 412 in engaging the community to create public artworks. Last year, they welcomed Danish artist Thomas Dambo to create a series of large trolls, which remain on view in and around Detroit Lakes. Now, the trolls have company: artist-in-residence Olga Ziemska has created four large sculptures of natural materials, entitled “Of the Earth.” Three of the site-specific sculptures are temporary, but the fourth — a butterfly, currently in the works —will remain at the Ortenstone Gardens & Sculpture Park in Detroit Lakes.Taylor says: I think they had probably 300 volunteers that worked for over 100 hours with her creating the pieces [three of which portray women built at large scale]. One woman is emerging from the earth. Another head is lying on its side, kind of listening. The third one is the woman's head and torso. I particularly like this one, because she's just got this hair that looks as though it's being blown back by a hurricane that's all made out of twigs and branches and sustainable materials.— Taylor BarnesA one-woman musical, for those who waitLux Mortenson of Brooklyn Park is excited for people to see the one-woman musical “Penelope” at the Elision Playhouse in Crystal. It runs June 20–28.Lux says: I'm so thrilled that “Penelope” at Theatre Elision is coming back this month! I was fortunate enough to see it last year, and it was all I could talk about for weeks. Christine Wade is a marvel, a true multi-hyphenate who guides the audience on a tight and beautiful one-act journey through the eyes of Penelope, Odysseus' devoted, incredibly patient wife, as she waits for her husband to return home. Everything comes together to leave the audience spellbound. This is absolutely one NOT to miss this summer.— Lux MortensonNature in natural materials at the ArboretumArt enthusiast Doris Rubenstein of Richfield recommends visiting the Minnesota Landscape Arboretum in Chaska to check out the new exhibit in the Reedy Gallery in the visitor center. It's called “Wax, Wire, Wood, and Clay,” and four artists use natural materials to create scenes from nature. It runs through July 28. It's recommended that visitors to the Arboretum book a ticket online in advance; children 15 and under are free with an adult.Doris says: Lynn Sarnoff-Christensen is the driving force behind the exhibition. Lynn is an encaustic artist; she explained it to me as the process of painting with molten beeswax. For this show, she's taken photos of birds' nests, incorporating them into the picture, along with other media like oils and pastels. Lynn invited three of her friends to join in the challenge of recreating nature with natural materials. Jodi Reeb sculptures weird seed pods and boulders from wire. Jim Gallop makes sculptures and bowls from knobby tree burls, and Cindy Syme carves tree portraits into clay tiles. So what better place could art lovers look for a show about the beauty of nature than the Arboretum, especially at this glorious time of year in Minnesota?— Doris RubensteinCorrection (June 12, 2025): An earlier version of this story incorrectly spelled Lux Mortenson's name. The story has been updated.

Join us as we revisit Jaume Collet-Serra's 2005 remake of “House of Wax,” starring Elisha Cuthbert, Chad Michael Murray, and, yes, the inimitable Paris Hilton. Was it scary? Was it good? Get ready for a nostalgic trip filled with screams (and maybe a few laughs) as we celebrate the anniversary of this cult classic slasher.Where To Watch House of Wax
Welcome to Episode 110: House of Wax (2005). Forget the football game! Put down that video camera, pick up your lip balm, and join us in Ambrose. It's not on the map, but we were able to find it. I'm worried though. Mike went into Trudy's House of Wax to explore, but that was hours ago. I can see a wax figure sitting at a table in front of a microphone. It looks a lot like my podcast partner but that can't be him can it? I wonder where the real Mike went. The lights in town all just came on. Maybe I can find someone to help me. I'm the meantime, listen today, wherever podcasts can be heard.
