Kelly Slater + Dane Reynolds Talk Lineup Psychosis And The Untold Stories Of SITD X

Watch the latest episode of Stab in the Dark X starring Kelly Slater here https://stabmag.com/stabcinema/watch-... Any genuinely endearing conversation might hinge on seating Dane Reynolds next to someone improbable and letting the room do the work. Last week: the reigning world champ. This week: Kelly Slater, calling in from New Zealand. Four months post hip replacement, the greatest surfer of all time admits he can barely lift his knee into a car some days, but he insists the robo-hip already outperforms the real one, which had been dragging him through agony for the last four years. He'd been surfing through pain the whole time. Laird Hamilton personally rang to convince him to get on the operating table. A wellness check, from one absurdly fit old-boy to another. He also reveals that during Stab In The Dark X, his back seized up for four days straight. Bedridden and unable to walk without looking like a pretzel. But you can't keep a good goat down. He still paddled out, still tested six nearly identical boards, all while wrangling Snapper crowds and soft Gold Coast walls. Remarkably, Kelly admits to not having watched a single episode of SITD X. Not one. Just the Instagram clips. That's it. Is this the surf equivalent of Johnny Depp claiming he's never seen one of his own movies? Similar star power, frankly. On the topic of SITD, Kel talks candidly about the awkwardness of judging shapers while owning a board company himself, and why he never publicly burned a design, even when it deserved it. More interesting is his philosophy: shapers shouldn't try to guess what Kelly wants. He wants what they actually make, otherwise it's just pasteurised performance foam. From there, the gents get into lineup politics, snowboarding double blacks, and the simple economic reality that waves are limited, egos are not, hence grown men hissing over them. The ISA's new Olympic qualifying system gets a light public flogging. And yes, Kelly is a believer in the machine. Put Olympic surfing in a wave pool. Standardise it, industrialise it, flip the switch and hear the system roar.

Joel Parkinson is a Gold Coast surfing icon; a CT standout with 11 CT wins, 3 Hawaiian Triple Crowns, 4 World Runner-Ups, the 2012 World Champion, and is globally-renowned as one of the most stylish and consistent competitors in modern surfing history.  In this year's first episode of The Lineup, he reflects on the journey that defined his career. Parko opens with the grassroots of Australian surfing, from Snapper Rocks Boardriders' 60+ year history to why club culture remains the backbone of the sport. He rewinds the tape back to when he was a young 11-year-old grom signing with Billabong for discounted boardshorts–and three decades later, still part of the team, a partnership that endured the ups and downs of brand-athlete relationships in surfing. He reveals how close he came to jumping ship to Rip Curl as a teenager, the jaw-dropping offer from Quiksilver in his early 20s, and why loyalty ultimately won.  Parko reflects on sharing a team with legends like Mark Occhilupo, Taj Burrow, and Luke Egan, and what it was like witnessing Andy Irons at his peak during the Blue Horizon era. He also shares the unforgettable story of Andy claiming the top room at the Billabong house in Hawaii—rankings be damned. The conversation shifts to life on Tour: traveling with his wife and kids long before it was common, the emotional toll of chasing a World Title while raising a family, and why his wife “deserves more of a World Title” than he does.  Parko opens up about nearly quitting in 2011 after a brutal New York event, how letting go reshaped his mindset, and the constant mental weight surfers carry when fighting for a Top 5. He dives into his rivalry and lifelong friendship with Mick Fanning and Dean Morrison, addresses the “style” narrative that followed him throughout his career, and gets deep into board talk—from early DHD days to his long partnership with JS Industries, including the mythical board that went 17 heats undefeated. The legendary surfer has grieved the deaths of her adoptive mother, stepmother and birth mother. Only later in life did she realise her drive to win came from a place of loss, and Layne needed to look inward to find her place off the podium.Layne is a legendary surfer who is the first person ever to win six consecutive world titles.Since her childhood spent on Sydney's Northern Beaches, Layne has loved being in the water but it wasn't until later in life that she realised her relentless drive to win came from a confusion about who she belonged with on land.Part of her drive to prove her worth and her place came from her experiences of loss. When Layne was 6 years old, her adopted mother Valerie died. Then, her step-mother Christina died after a long battle with breast cancer.Twenty years after Layne reconnected with her birth mother, Maggie, she flew to America to be by Maggie's side as she took her last breaths.Losing three mothers in one lifetime caused Layne to equate motherhood with loss and abandonment. But after retiring and learning to slow down, Layne turned inward and finally found herself along the way.Content warning: this episode of Conversations contains discussion of adoption and grief.Layne's memoir Beneath the Waves was written with Michael Gordon and published in 2009 by Penguin. Her latest book, Awake Academy, was written with Tess Brouwer and is published by Penguin. This episode of Conversations was produced by Meggie Morris. Gabriel Medina just walked away from Rip Curl after 16 years—and the surf world is officially changing. In this episode of Pinch My Salt, Sterling Spencer and Cousin Ryan break down the biggest surfing news and what it means for pro surfing contracts, surf sponsorships, and the future of the surf industry. Are legacy surf brands like Rip Curl, Billabong, Quiksilver and Volcom losing their grip? Why are top surfers chasing new deals, luxury brands, and short-term “collabs” instead of lifelong sponsor relationships? We talk Gabriel Medina, Yago Dora, and how “surf teams” and big surf movies are fading while surf vlogs, YouTube surfing, and surf podcasts are taking over. If you're into surf culture, corelord vs zest, behind-the-scenes surf business talk, and hilarious hot takes, this one's for you. Watch to the end for bonus chaos, old-school surf nostalgia, and the real truth about where surfing is headed in 2026.Sterling's got opinions. Ryan's got questions. And the surf industry's got problems.

EP 105 | The Secret Art of Barrel Riding | Pinch My SaltThe Secret Art of Barrel Riding goes way deeper than just getting pitted. In this episode of Pinch My Salt, Sterling Spencer and Cousin Ryan unpack what it really means to progress in surfing—from learning how to ride barrels properly to understanding the mindset of true surf black belts. Using legendary moments from Jordy Smith, Dane Reynolds, Tom Curren, Bruce Irons, Kelly Slater, Rasta, and Bryce Young, the boys break down why some surfers naturally flow with the wave while others fight it. This episode blends barrel riding technique, surf philosophy, and real-world lessons about patience, commitment, and timing—on a surfboard and in life.We get into why tail pads can hold you back, how removing them forces better rail work, why Bruce Irons' knee-drag changed Pipeline forever, and what made Tom Curren's barrel stance so different from everyone else's. Along the way, the conversation drifts into dad life, ego, aging, creativity, midlife pondering, learning when to let go, and why chasing titles—or forcing turns—doesn't always lead to happiness. From body surfing and foils to core-lord debates, pro-surfer psychology, and why waves seem to “choose” certain people, this episode is for surfers trying to surf better and live better. If you're learning to surf, chasing deeper barrels, stuck in a plateau, or just love honest surf talk mixed with comedy and chaos, this one's for you.#PinchMySalt #SurfPodcast #BarrelRiding #HowToSurf #SurfTips #GetBarreled #SurfBlackBelt #SurfingLife #SurfCulture #CoreLord #JordySmith #DaneReynolds #TomCurren #BruceIrons #KellySlater #Rasta #BodySurfing #FoilSurfing #NoTailPad #SurfPhilosophy #SurfComedy #GulfCoastSurfing #SurfPodcast #Surfing #SurfCulture #KellySlater #TomCurren #BruceIrons #RobMachado #SurfingLife #SurfComedy #Foiling #SurfClips #BarrelRiding #NoTailPad

Not a highlight reel interview, but a rare, quiet, sometimes uncomfortable conversation with one of surfing's most mysterious figures. We talk about why Tom is so hard to interview, his humility, his long pauses, and why being in the room with him feels completely different than talking to any other surf legend. From there, the episode opens up into classic Pinch My Salt territory — Christmas chaos, working at church during December, bizarre real-life encounters, and the strange contrast between everyday stress and the calm that surfing brings. We dive into surf and skate culture, Pinchy Clippies, Bam Margera sightings, skating debates, dog surfing, and why certain moments still feel magical in action sports. The conversation also drifts into surf philosophy, why surfing can feel psychedelic, how waves carry meaning, and why the soul of surfing matters more than clips, algorithms, or industry trends. The Surfer’s Journal presents Soundings with Jamie Brisick

Born in Hawaii in 1961, Danny Kwock rode his first waves at Waikiki when he was ten. Surfing took a brief hiatus when he moved with his family to the San Fernando Valley, but picked up soon thereafter when they moved to Newport Beach, right at Wedge, which is where Kwock made his mark, charging big waves and becoming one of the brightest, flashiest surfers of the Echo Beach scene, wearing pink boardshorts and riding polka dot twin-fins when most Californians followed a far more understated ethos.  Kwock was featured on the cover of Surfer and Surfing magazines in the early 1980s, did a short stint on the world pro tour, but soon became a forerunner to what we now know of as a professional "freesurfer." But he also saw the virtues of the long game. When the opportunity arose to work in a behind-the-scenes role at Quiksilver, he jumped at it, and he hit his straps as the marketing director, a position he held from the early 1980s up until the mid-aughts. (It should be noted that Kwock's relationship with Quiksilver began a few years earlier, when he and his Echo Beach buddy Preston Murray got caught stealing boardshorts from the warehouse.) Kwock's early team captain/marketing position started in what were wild days. The industry grew fast, and he played an instrumental role in that growth.  In this episode of Soundings, Kwock talks with Jamie Brisick about meeting Duke Kahanamoku, surfing Wedge, the Echo Beach era, fashion, negotiating contracts, Andy Warhol, the wild days of the surf industry, and signing Kelly Slater to Quiksilver.  Produced by Jonathan Shifflett. Music by PazKa (Aska Matsumiya & Paz Lenchantin).

Todd Glaser is a world-renowned surf photographer, surfer, waterman, and longtime friend of Conner Coffin. In this episode of the 805 Beer Cold Beer Surf Club, the two share a deep and nostalgic conversation that traces a lifetime spent chasing waves, images, and meaning, diving into what it's like balancing the beautiful chaos of parenthood with a career built on sprinting toward storms and swimming into heavy lineups with only a camera in hand. Todd reflects on growing up in San Diego, learning photography through bodyboarding, and discovering his craft the old-school way – shooting film, logging detailed swell notes, mailing rolls to labs, and hoping the shots came out. He and Conner revisit Todd's leap from surf-shop grom to Brooks Institute student to traveling full-time with Kelly Slater as one of the most respected lensmen in the game. They share stories from their years on the road together, early Surfer and Surfing assignments, and the image that led to Todd's first cover and changed the trajectory of his career. They chat about iconic sessions in Tahiti, how Jack Johnson shot every frame of September Sessions, as well as Todd's 15-plus years traveling with Kelly, a partnership that grew into deep friendship and a new book documenting the journey. Todd opens up about how becoming a parent and slowing down travel has reshaped his approach to both surfing and photography, and why keeping things simple, staying curious, and seeking authentic moments behind the lens still guide everything he does.
