Anna Marie discusses fire safety with Jamie Meltion, Fire and Life Safety Educator, from the Franklin Fire Department. Jamie stresses the importance of working smoke alarms in a household to protect your family from fires because smoke from a fire can incapacitate a person in as quickly as thirty seconds. Jamie says that it's important to replace the batteries in your alarms every year, even if the smoke alarms are hardwired. Also, most alarms need to be replaced every ten years. You can check the back of the alarm to see the date that it was manufactured. Working smoke detectors are so critical because most fatalities from house fires occur between the hours of 11 pm and 6 am in houses that didn't have working smoke alarms. They also discuss safety tips for holiday cooking since the season is not that far off.. Thanksgiving is the number one day of the year for house fires and that's because more people are cooking on Thanksgiving and 40% of house fires are caused by cooking. Most of these fires are caused by distractions and forgetting something is cooking. Jamie says that a tip to help with this is to either turn off the stove if you have to leave it, or take a cooking utensil with you as a reminder. The most important thing to remember if your house is on fire is to get outside to your designated safety place, stay outside and don't go back in for anything, and once you're safely outside of the house call 911.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Discussion on the many responsibilities within the Franklin Fire Department
Thanksgiving is supposed to be about food and togetherness, but it is also the top time of year for cooking fires. In this Focus, hear Jamie Melton of the Franklin Fire Department run down the dangers and what to do if a fire starts.
On June 30, 2015, the Franklin Fire Department was dispatched to a multi-family structure fire. The first-arriving officer reported heavy smoke showing and there was a possibility of people trapped. The crew started an interior operation, climbing a long set of stairs to the second floor. Conditions changed quickly and during the ensuing chaos the captain became separated from his crew.
