We've talked about mediocre X-Men films before, so for The New Mutants we decided to try something a little different. Returning guests and X-Men experts Robyn Slack (Quantuum Kickflip) and Olav Rokne (Unofficial Hugo Book Club Blog) face off against seasoned movie punch-up veterans Scott C. Bourgeois and Gregg Beever in an epic movie pitch battle. Liam Creswick judges this winner-take-all I Have Some Notes slugfest. What spoils await the victor? I donno, pride or something.

You shuffle your way to your seat, your oversized cola sloshing precariously against its lid as you carefully navigate past an aisle of movie-goers. The seat thumps as you drop heavily into your chair, stretching out your popcorn and cola in front of you to counter balance your descent. You smile as the lights dim and the projector fires up, “I’ve been waiting for this movie for months” you sputter through a mouthful of popcorn. The opening theme rumbles “Here we go!” And… It’s not that good. Maybe it was the pacing, maybe it was a scene that needed to be deleted or added, or maybe it was Batman v Superman. “It wasn’t awful” you think to yourself as you leave the theatre “I wonder what they could’ve changed to fix it?” Glad you said that, because we’ve often wondered that ourselves. What if the Man of Steel wasn’t such a Man of Heel? What if Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull left out all the monkeys? What if Prometheus made even just the smallest bit of sense? Just a tiny bit?! Each month on I Have Some Notes self proclaimed Movie Experts™ Liam Creswick, Gregg Beever and Scott C. Bourgeois take a movie that sucked, but had potential, and put it through a vigorous podcasting notes process to try to turn it into a blockbuster. Are we always successful? Probably! With the help of dynamite guests such as Danica LeBlanc, Erin Beever, Anita Bourgeois, Cinematological, German Villegas, Brandon Schatz, Jay Runham, Adam Rozenhart, Sam Power, Andrea Beca and so many others we’ve fixed tepid movies like The Dark Knight Rises, Star Trek: Generations, Waterworld and more! Each month on I Have Some Notes self proclaimed Movie Experts™ Colin MacIntyre (The Long John Index, Making Whoopee) and Gregg Beever (Inglorious Hipsters) take a movie that sucked, but had potential, and put it through a vigorous podcasting notes process to try to turn it into a blockbuster. Meet Jess Holt, the wry wit and graphic designer by trade who offers a raw, insightful look at life as the mother of twins on Grace and Champ. Jess started the blog as a way to connect with adults after emerging from the first-year fog of somewhat unexpected parenthood, multiplied by 2. “I didn’t want it to be just about parenting, but it turns out that’s all I do,” she says. You don’t get tips from Jess, nor do you get a candy-coated celebration of the joys of motherhood. You get candour, which brings with it reassurance that raising kids is stressful and crazy-making, and all you can do is your best, which is good enough. We talk about shutting down unsolicited advice, the heebie-jeebieness of the term “mommy blogger,” and the feeling of being outnumbered, among other things. Jess recommended these local blogs and podcasts: Raising Edmonton, Lori Godin’s compendium of things to do with your kids; The Momoirs, Hannah Hamilton’s unvarnished truth about parenting; The Undad, Trent Wilkie’s blog about raising one (and soon two) kids; I Have Some Notes, the new podcast from Colin MacIntyre and Gregg Beever on how to fix a bad movie. You can follow Grace and Champ on Twitter and on Facebook.
Welcome to the first episode of I Have Some Notes, the podcast that attempts to fix flawed, but salvageable films. This month's episode examines Zach Synder's Man of Steel. Host Colin MacIntyre and co-host Gregg Beever are joined by Edmonton entertainment news magnate Jay Runham and the heir to the Cornish Throne, Mark Jowett. The foursome discuss where Man of Steel went wrong (somewhere around "I've had a child Zod, a boy child"), share notes on how to fix it and ruminate on an alternative cast. Thanks for listening! If you enjoy the show, share it with your friends.
It's time for another ill-informed Oscar show! Especially given that Scott and I have only seen one of the best-picture-nominated films. So to fill the void, we invited Gregg Beever one of two Inglorious Hipsters, and Mark Jowett the twisted mind behind Deed The Inky, to join us and share their predictions. What happens next will blow your mind. But probably not. But we still hope you enjoy the show! Image by Hollywood Souvenir Shops on Flickr. Used under Creative Commons License.
People love talking about movies — whether they're according-to-Hoyle qualified to or not. And we're no different. But Scott and I aren't going to deign to talk movies on our own, oh no! In this episode, we chat Oscars with Mark Jowett, Gregg Beever, and Erin Bourne — variously regulars on the Inglorious Hipsters podcast and Edmontonians at large! The panel does its best to guess — based both on Hollywood politics and the merits of the individual films — who will win the major categories, and even some of the minor ones. Give us a listen and share your predictions! Image by ebbandflowphotography on Flickr. Used under Creative Commons License.
It's that time of year when Hollywood looks at itself, really looks at itself and asks, "How can we demonstrate in no uncertain terms that we must be celebrated for our greatness?" It's actually kind of like the Yeggies, but with, you know, star power. And actors. And Billy Crystal, though thankfully not as the host this year. And they call them the 85th Annual Academy Awards. And that's really what this episode is all about. Featuring such film experts as Jay n J n Gregg Beever n Erin Bourne, we tackle the important issues: like how to host an Oscar party? Did Argo and Ben Affleck get snubbed? Why do we subject ourselves to a 3-hour telecast (23 hours, if you include the red carpet stuff)? And who will be named... BEST? This lively discussion will make you laugh, cry, and laughcry, which is a condition for which you should seek medical attention. And to top it all off, we ditch the Fast Fifteen in favour of Oscar Trivia Through The Ages. Leave a comment on the episode and let us know what you think! Image by Beacon Radio on Flickr.
