Symptoms of Spiritual Dehydration 

After a short vacation, it's a slow start for Marshall and Aaron but things start looking up as they both talk about their most recent adventures. Needless to say the boys are greatful to be back in the studio and back at spreading the Gospel. Marshall visited Arkansas with his wife and had a blast in Hot Springs While Aaron and his family traveled so close to Marshall's home they practically waved on their way by! Spring has sprung! for Marshall anyway, Aaron is still dealing with cold weather and snow. Winter will not end and it's got Aaron dreaming of tropical vacations, beaches, and water! Aaron might now be considered and electrician dispite never being traditonally taught and Marshall is now a roofing expert! With agricultural related GHG emissions accounting for about quarter of global emissions, conversations around the role of farming in carbon and emissions management are intensifying. This includes the capacity of soil to sequester carbon by growers transitioning to farming practices such as no-till and cover cropping. Governments are starting to incentivize such transitions, and numerous food and crop input producer pilot programs to track on-farm sustainability practices have emerged. In this podcast, Joel Jackson, Chemicals and Fertilizer Analyst at BMO Capital Markets, discusses the key findings from his recent research report, which concludes that while many hope no-till farming and cover cropping could prove a benefit to growers to monetize sustainability practices and lower emissions, they may prove to be a burden unless government and food industry incentives materially increase and broaden. Even with government incentives and promises of CPG industry incentives, BMO estimates a 5- to 10- year payback for a farmer transitioning to no-till and cover cropping. Upfront equipment switching costs are sizable, there are yield penalties in initial years, and material annual cover crop seed costs. Plus, future outcomes are blurry - carbon monitoring is imprecise, carbon sequestration seems lower than projected and variable year to year, there's carbon re-emissions potential from natural occurrences or if practices are abandoned, carbon marketplaces are immature, and government policies are unclear. Les constructeurs automobiles africains sont encore peu nombreux à développer des marques et des produits locaux. Ils ont pour nom Mobius, Kiira Motors, Jengu ou encore Wallyscar… Les séries sont limitées et les productions souvent embryonnaires, mais ceux qui se lancent dans la construction automobile en sont persuadés : l'Afrique va suivre le même chemin que la Chine et possédera à terme de grands constructeurs. Focus sur le constructeur kényan Mobius Motors. Lorsqu'en 2010 Joel Jackson crée Mobius Motors à Nairobi, il part d'un constat simple : la plupart des voitures sont des véhicules d'occasion importés de l'étranger, peu adaptés aux routes kényanes et dont le prix est élevé en raison des taxes. Son idée est de développer un petit SUV avec le plus possible de savoir-faire locaux. Très vite, le Mobius première génération sort des lignes de production. Nicolas Guibert est le PDG de Mobius Motors : « L'entreprise a fabriqué cinquante exemplaires de cette voiture, il y a maintenant sept ans. Elle les a mises sur le marché, c'est un véhicule qui est extrêmement simple. C'est la 2CV du SUV ! » Faire appel aux fournisseurs locaux Mais le Mobius 1 est cher à fabriquer et les dirigeants se lancent dans la conception d'un Mobius de deuxième génération. Un SUV dont la production commence tout juste et pour laquelle l'entreprise espère écouler 1 000 exemplaires par an dès 2024. Le Mobius 2 est un exemple en termes de contenu local, selon Nicolas Guibert. « On est à 30 % d'intégration locale, on prévoit de monter à 50 % en intégrant les panneaux intérieurs, les panneaux extérieurs et le châssis. Ce qui est possible, car la conception est suffisamment simple pour pouvoir trouver, ou même développer, des fournisseurs locaux capables de le faire. Par exemple, pour le châssis, il va falloir développer un fournisseur, car les bras de suspension sont d'une conception totalement différente de celle que l'on trouve chez un constructeur classique. » Assurer le développement de la Mobius 2 Champion du « fabriquer local », Mobius est aussi un assembleur. La Mobius 3, un SUV haut de gamme lancé l'an dernier, est un produit conçu par une entreprise chinoise et simplement assemblé au Kenya. Mais ce paradoxe n'est qu'apparent ou du moins n'est qu'une étape stratégique, comme l'explique Nicolas Guibert. « Ce qui est important au sujet de la Mobius 3 – et il faut que vous compreniez pourquoi on a fait cette voiture… Un, c'est pour étoffer notre gamme et accélérer le développement de la marque, mais (deux) c'est aussi parce que c'est un moyen pour nous d'accélérer notre accession aux profits, et c'est ce profit qui va nous permettre d'assurer sur le long terme le développement de la Mobius 2 et de notre projet. Donc, il faut savoir aussi faire ce genre de compromis pour aller au résultat final. » Pour les dirigeants de Mobius, il sera possible de faire émerger des fournisseurs locaux à deux conditions : leur proposer des volumes de production importants, et surtout leur demander des pièces que l'on ne trouve pas ailleurs. Ainsi, l'adaptation des châssis ou des amortisseurs aux routes kényane permet à Mobius et à ses équipementiers d'innover et donc d'augmenter leurs chances de survivre au sein d'une industrie africaine encore très fragile.
