This Memorial Day weekend we are celebrating the life of Ray's mom, filmmaker Mary Cybulski. We start by discussing a retrospective of Mary's experimental short films, co-directed with John Tintori, which will screen this Sunday at the Walter Reade Theater, Lincoln Center. We then hear from two of Mary's longtime collaborators, Tony Gilroy and John Sayles. Ray also discusses his mom's career in a film-by-film “lightning round” inspired by (the God) LexG. Finally we end on an excerpt from a conversation between Mary and Mark Ruffalo about point of view, performance, and family. The Short Films of Mary Cybulski & John Tintori Walter Reade Theater, Lincoln CenterSunday May 24, 11am

Tony Gilroy was told to shut up by Disney about politics -- particularly using the word 'fascism' -- during the promotion of Andor. But his NDA must be up because he has no shortage of opinions on Trump now. Is this the new normal at Disney and Lucasfilm going forward? Have they learned a painful financial lesson? Michael Clayton was released right in the middle of George Clooney's 15-year run of remarkably successful filmmaking. From 1998 to 2013, the charismatic star--who so often played it best when he played it weary--acted in, directed, wrote and/or produced some of the best projects around. He got money, awards...or both. And in Tony Gilroy's directorial debut, Clooney is intense and he's just terrific as a law firm's "fixer". He's assigned to try to talk down mentally-ill super-lawyer Tom Wilkinson, who's tanking a lawsuit because he discovered wrong-doing by the company he represents. Tilda Swinton won an Oscar for her oddball, yet still restrained performance (restrained for her, at least) as a fixer for that evil-doing company. Gilroy's complex throwback to '70s legal thrillers is one of the very best dramas of the Aughts. So admire some horses and scarf a dozen or more loaves of fresh bread while you fire up the 709th episode of Have You Ever Seen. Tony Gilroy examines how Andor portrays authoritarian power as a bureaucratic system, the moral compromises of life under surveillance, and the role ordinary people play in enforcing oppressive systems.

Toe pick! If you don't love The Cutting Edge, something is seriously wrong with you. This week Dart Adams and Paul Gagliardi drop in to talk about the history behind the 1992 cult classic and why we love it so damn much. About our guests:Dart Adams is a historian, journalist and a lecturer from Boston, MA. His work has appeared in various online & print publications including Complex, NPR, Mass Appeal, Okayplayer, DJ Booth, Hip Hop Wired, The Urban Daily, The Vinyl Factory, uDiscover Music, Urban Legends, LEVEL, Ebony, Rock The Bells, Andscape (ESPN), Bay State Banner, Boston Globe Magazine, and Boston Magazine. He's also the owner/operator of independent imprint label Producers I Know/Fat Beats and host of Dart Against Humanity and the Boston Legends Podcast.Dr. Paul Gagliardi is an associate teaching professor at Marquette University. His primary fields of research are twentieth-century American cultural studies, drama and performance studies, labor studies, and film studies. And his research focuses on the intersection between economic calamity, theories of work and labor, and the performative art people produce during eras like the Great Depression. In his courses, he emphasizes understanding the historical, social, and cultural context of texts, but also now our contemporary readings problematize literature. He also fosters interdisciplinary dialogue between all fields in his courses, and supports students with both their academic and professional goals. His book, All Play and No Work: American Work Ideals and the Comic Plays of the Federal Theatre Project (Temple University Press, 2023), examines how select comedies produced by the federal government during the Great Depression portrayed complicated norms of working and labor. I argue that many plays actually subverted norms of traditional labor or promoted alternative forms of working to audiences during the 1930s. My writing on the Federal Theatre Project and other subjects, such as confidence artists and literature or other theater studies, has appeared in such outlets as Journal of American Drama and Threatre, Middle West Review, and Howlround, and I have a forthcoming chapter on portrayals of unions in pro wrestling. My current research project examines the cultural history of ice-skating shows in the United States and Canada in the 20th Century, focusing on how shows like the Ice Follies and Ice Capades intersected with sports and theater, as well as how they promoted and challenged gender norms.
On today's show Chris Ryan joins Sean to unpack the year 2025 in horror movies. But first, they hit a handful of movie news headlines, including rumors of a new trailer coming out in December for Christopher Nolan's ‘The Odyssey,' Michael Mann's recent comments about the production of ‘Heat II,' and Eva Victor being cast in Tony Gilroy's ‘Behemoth!' (2:02). They then cover Scott Derrickson's sequel, ‘The Black Phone 2' (starring Ethan Hawke and Mason Thames), which they both found quite disappointing (10:32). Next, they reflect on the current state of horror as a genre and explore why they feel it's in a weird place right now (26:07). Later, Chris and Sean share their favorites of the year (36:16) before Alex Ross Perry joins the show to discuss his contribution to V/H/S/Halloween. Perry talks us through his thought process and points out why finding what he personally finds scary is the most important part (1:02:50). Finally, they have an extensive conversation surrounding horror anthologies, where they identify what defines a good horror anthology and share their personal favorites (1:22:58). On this week's episode, I'm joined by Tony Gilroy to discuss his work on Andor, the hit Disney+ series that's a prequel to Rogue One but has ambitions beyond telling the backstory of the Death Star. It is, in a very real way, a TV show about our moment and the mounting tension felt throughout the political order: from Imperial troops on the streets of civilian cities attempting to provoke conflict to Luthen Rael's (Stellan Skarsgård) campaign of violent resistance, one can't help but draw parallels to this increasingly fraught point in American history.

"I have friends everywhere." In this special episode, we're joined by Tony Gilroy, the creative force behind the electrifying Star Wars series Andor. Critics and activists on the frontlines in America have praised Andor for its powerful portrayal of resistance, and with Season 2 up for 14 Emmy Awards, it's clear this is no ordinary space opera. Gilroy's vision grounds the story in centuries of history, showing us what it means to resist empire in all its brutality. Andor is an urgent guide for Americans today. For more than three decades, Gilroy has been shaping modern cinema with blockbusters and fearless storytelling. He gave us Rogue One: A Star Wars Story, and wrote and directed the critically acclaimed political thriller Michael Clayton, which earned him Oscar nominations for both screenplay and direction. His credits include Armageddon and the first four entries of the Bourne series (in which he directed the fourth), Devil's Advocate, Dolores Claiborne, The Cutting Edge, State of Play, and many, many other films. The son of World War II veteran and Tony and Pulitzer-winning playwright and filmmaker Frank Gilroy, and brother to acclaimed film editor John Gilroy and Oscar-nominated writer-director Dan Gilroy (an Emmy-nominated writer on Andor), Tony Gilroy doesn't just tell stories: he builds immersive worlds where power, corruption, and resistance collide, worlds that help us make sense of our own. We're thrilled to welcome him to Gaslit Nation to discuss this dark chapter in America's history and, through his art, remind us of the courage it takes to stand and fight back. For Gaslit Nation listeners who want the full breakdown of the convicted felon/war criminal distraction circus and what comes next for the Free World, our latest salon digs into the Putin-Trump gaslighting sideshow in Alaska and how the war can actually end. Don't miss Monday's salon at 4pm ET, only on Patreon, where we'll dive into two powerful films about resisting dictatorship: The Lives of Others and I'm Still Here. The Lives of Others tells the haunting story of artists defying the East German Stasi, while I'm Still Here tells the story of a woman whose husband is disappeared by Brazil's military dictatorship in the 1970s, and how she transforms her country for the better. These two films are reminders that light will always defeat darkness: it's just a matter of time, and collective courage and defiance. Want to enjoy Gaslit Nation ad-free?
