A few weeks ago, I had the pleasure of hosting a panel at UTA for a screening of ANDOR - the Star Wars spinoff series from creator Tony Gilroy. It was there that I met today's guest, executive producer, Sanne Wohlenberg. Check that out here: https://youtu.be/mGe1Ec3nhv8 Sanne is a German-born television producer working primarily in the United Kingdom. After working on multiple episodes of the critically acclaimed series BLACK MIRROR, she went on to win an Emmy Award in 2019 for Outstanding Limited Series as the producer of CHERNOBYL, followed by a Producers Guild of America nomination for The David L. Wolper Award for Outstanding Producer of a Limited Series the following year. In 2022, Sanna joined ANDOR as a non-writing EP and lucky for us, helped breathe fresh new life into the franchise. During our conversation, Sanne and I discussed pivoting from law to entertainment, choosing talent over credits, and why you don't have to be a STAR WARS fanatic to fall into the target audience for ANDOR.

ANDOR is over, but the conversation about this show's impact and resonance has just begun. Tricia Barr and Sarah Woloski continue our conversation from last month, sharing our thoughts on this incredible show. Our main discussion considers Tony Gilroy's comments from the final ANDOR: Declassified Episode, in which he states “The five women at the end of the show are what the show is about. It's the victory, it's the pain, it's the life that these five women had that gives the show it's dramatic punch at the end.” Who are these women and how are they impactful in the show? This week's episode of the Empire Podcast sees Chris Hewitt mark the release of Mission: Impossible — The Final Reckoning by doing a non-spoiler, non-epic (less than 20 minutes!) chat with that film's director, the legendarily loquacious Christopher McQuarrie, [26:00 - 43:06 approx] and have a lovely natter with the stars of the new Wes Anderson film, The Phoenician Scheme, Benicio del Toro and Michael Cera. [1:01:37 - 1:15:35 approx] Right at the end of the show, we also bring you an extended excerpt from our Andor s2 spoiler chat with that show's creator, Tony Gilroy, who tells Ben Travis all about the fates of certain characters. Do not listen if you haven't seen Andor! [1:43:43 - 1:56:02 approx] Elsewhere, Chris Hewitt is joined in the podbooth by Helen O'Hara, James Dyer, and John Nugent, to talk about Cannes and Cruise, run their collective eye over the week's movie news, and review The Final Reckoning, The Phoenician Scheme, Lilo & Stitch, and Guy Ritchie's Fountain Of Youth. Enjoy.
Critically-acclaimed Andor has returned. Politically sophisticated and emotionally bracing, Tony Gilroy's Star Wars series about the birth of a rebellion has returned for a second and final season. Does it live up to its first season's incredible highs and adult-minded storytelling? We discuss and review the show, its odd release schedule, and where it ranks within the shaky Star Wars canon.

Welcome To The Party Pal: The Mind-Bending Film & Television Podcast You Didn't Know You Needed!
This episode of Welcome To The Party Pal celebrates the second season of Andror, the American science fiction political spy thriller drama television series created by Tony Gilroy for Disney+. It is part of the Star Wars franchise and a prequel to the film Rogue One (2016), which itself is a prequel to the original Star Wars film (1977). The series follows thief-turned-rebel spy Cassian Andor during the five years that lead to the events of the two films, exploring how he becomes radicalized against the Galactic Empire and how the wider Rebel Alliance is formed. Diego Luna reprises his role as Cassian Andor from Rogue One and serves as an executive producer. The series also stars Adria Arjona, Stellan Skarsgård, Ben Mendelsohn, Benjamin Bratt, and Alan Tudyk. In this episode co-hosts Michael Shields and River Jordan explain why they believe this series is an absolute triumph from its inception to its final, heart-wrenching moments. Hosted on Acast. It's hard to believe that 'Rogue One' premiered nearly a decade ago. At the time, it was fairly well received, considered to be a decent first step into the standalone Star Wars movies, if not a bit messy. As the years passed, we learned more about the production. Gareth Edwards, who retained sole directing credit, was assisted by Tony Gilroy to "fix" the project. Tony went so far as to call it a "corpse" when he came aboard for rewrites and reshoots. It was Tony's inclusion that brought us some of the movies most memorable moments, and ultimately led him to leading the charge on 'Andor', a prequel project that flew under the radar as hits like 'The Mandalorian' hogged the spotlight. With 'Andor' now complete, considered by many to be a masterpiece in storytelling, not just in Star Wars but on television in general, now is the most appropriate time to reexamine the movie that spawned the Cassian-centered prequel series with fresh eyes. 'Andor', which leads directly into the events of 'Rogue One' recontextualizes much of the film, creating a unique viewing experience that pays off a multitude of threads that are brilliantly laid over the two seasons of 'Andor'. It takes the movie, which was already pretty good, and makes it great. Now existing as part of a whole that weaves a cohesive narrative from the nascent moments of the Rebellion all the way through to the destruction of the Death Star in 1977 (the seed that begat ALL Star Wars, and what we appropriately align our Star Wars BBY calendars to). It all feels wholistic and considered when viewed from the broader perspective - an accomplishment that should set a shining example of what Star Wars can and should aspire to.
It's time for some Star Wars news! Tony Gilroy has been making the post-Andor interview rounds and shared some insights on working with Kathleen Kennedy, why he told Luthen and Keyla's backstory, and Perrin. We reflect on the highs, lows, and evolution of the franchise across movies, TV shows, games, and why Tony Gilroy's Andor redefined what Star Wars could be: smart, political, emotionally rich, and unafraid to explore the slow burn of rebellion and the systems that crush hope. “Rebellions are built on hope.” And after seeing the series finale we know they're also built on the back of Luthen Rael, and Kleya Marki, and Lonni Jung and of course Mon Mothma and Cassian Andor. This season was damn near perfect gang and it just got better as it went along! It's getting the critical acclaim and it's getting the fans acclaim. Tony Gilroy delivered a masterpiece and the worthy predecessor to Rogue One. It breaks our hearts to say bye to this one but we're here to give it its proper flowers and say goodbye to Andor but hello to bright burn of rebellion!
That's right, out of respect to Tony Gilroy and Co. for sticking the landing, the subtitle of this episode discussing the finale of Andor is the main character's actual name. Was Cassian ever the most compelling character on his own show? No, not even once. But he proved a perfect AXIS around which this tale of revolution could revolve. Danny and Kevin discuss the final arc of Andor and how it adds nothing but flavor and taste to the gigantic pot of stew that is Star Wars. It is, in fact, more fun to talk about movies and shows that one enjoys and finds entertaining and engrossing. Andor is the greatest Star Wars we've ever seen on any screen and it's not close. My close friend Alan Malfavon joins in to talk about the brilliance of this show, what it means to us, and what we hope to see next.About our guest:Alan Malfavon resituates Mexico's socio-political, cultural, and economic networks with the Atlantic World and the Greater Caribbean, and it dissects and problematizes those networks by centering the Black and Afro-Mexican experience. His research interrogates and subverts archival silences that have erased Black and Afro-Mexican agency from narratives of Mexican identity and nation-state formation, seeking to diversify these narratives by foregrounding the voices, perspectives, and actions of Afro-descendants.

In the wake of the amazing “Ghorman Massacre” arc from ANDOR season 2, there is still much ground to cover. We have highlights from a fresh interview with Andor writer Dan Gilroy, brother of showrunner Tony Gilroy. Dan provides some quality insight into the characters and the situations they find themselves in. Turning our ears toward ANDOR, we take audio of The Ghorman Front's desperate underground radio broadcast into the RFR Sound Lab to clean it up and hear it all, word-for-dramatic-word. Spotlighting Star Wars animation, we breakdown TALES OF THE UNDERWORLD and react to the stories featuring Asajj Ventress and Cad Bane. And Listener Feedback presents the question: Does Mon Mothma know The Emperor is a Sith Lord?
Ghorman Massacre, Mon Mothma's Speech, and Political ParallelsIn this gripping episode of Star Wars Generations, hosts Matthew, Alex, Erin, and Aaron dive deep into what many consider the pinnacle of Star Wars television (at least until next week): Andor Season 2 Episodes 7-9. The discussion centers on the shocking Ghorman massacre, Syril and Dedra's complex relationship, and Mon Mothma's pivotal speech that formally launches the Rebel Alliance. The hosts analyze how Episode 8's Ghorman massacre serves as a chilling parallel to real-world protests and government responses. They point out how the Empire deliberately created conditions for violence by barricading the plaza, strategically opening it, and then using a planted sniper to incite riots—tactics reminiscent of how governments have historically responded to protests in our world. When the protesters chant "The galaxy is watching," the hosts draw comparisons to the 1968 Democratic National Convention protests in Chicago where demonstrators shouted "The whole world is watching" as police violently responded. The discussion turns to how the Empire controlled the media narrative, with news reports spinning the massacre as "terrorist violence" rather than a government atrocity—highlighting the parallels between Star Wars and our own media landscape. The hosts examine how Tony Gilroy's writing makes explicit connections between the Empire's tactics and contemporary political situations.Syril and Dedra's relationship takes a dramatic turn when Syril discovers Dedra's role in orchestrating the Ghorman massacre. After nearly strangling her in his rage, Syril abandons the Empire to pursue Andor, whom he still blames for the deaths that started his journey. The hosts discuss how Syril's character arc represents someone who believed in justice through institutional power only to discover the system's corruption, leading to his violent rejection of Dedra—whom he once idolized. One of the most significant moments explored is Mon Mothma's powerful speech denouncing the Empire, which formally launches the Rebel Alliance. The hosts analyze her journey from working within the system to finally breaking away after being gradually isolated and betrayed by those around her. Her speech about the "death of truth" being "the ultimate victory of evil" resonates powerfully with contemporary political discourse, showing how Star Wars continues to reflect real-world struggles against authoritarianism.Key Topics Discussed:How does Episode 7 set up the characters for the dramatic events in Episodes 8-9?What real-world protest events did the Ghorman massacre parallel? How did Syril's character evolve from Imperial loyalist to someone who attacks Dedra? Why did Bix choose to leave Andor rather than stay with him? What made Mon Mothma's speech so powerful and relevant to today's political climate? How does Andor's role in helping Mon Mothma escape connect to his ultimate fate in Rogue One?What significance does K2SO's introduction have for the final arc of the series? The hosts conclude by praising Andor as possibly the best Star Wars media ever produced, while acknowledging that the franchise benefits from having a variety of tones across different shows. With only one more arc left in the series, they express both excitement to see K2SO in the final episodes and disappointment that this groundbreaking show is nearing its conclusion. **************************************************************************This episode is a production of Star Wars Generations, a The Ethical Panda Podcast and part of the TruStory FM Entertainment Podcast Network. Matt Damon as Jason Bourne is back in the first of many sequels! This time he has to try and remember all of his memories by tracking down another old man who made him do a Treadstone. It's got action! A car chase! More things from the first movie! It also has Paul Greengrass taking over directorial duties with a script sort of from Andor's Tony Gilroy.
