EP 196: 2008's Box Office Countdown (5–1) – Jokers, Jones, and ABBA (ft. Phoenix Clouden) Episode Description: Jason is joined by the ever unpredictable Phoenix Clouden (The Film Canon) to finish the epic climb through 2008's biggest box office hits! This is the top 5 where caped crusaders, crystal skulls, pandas, demigods, and dancing queens battled for cinematic dominance. It's a strange mix of gritty realism, nostalgic absurdity, and pop musical euphoria Films Discussed: Mamma Mia! (5) – Meryl, ABBA, and summer dreams you can sorta almost sing along to. Hancock (4) – A drunken antihero gets a redemption arc, and the movie continues. Kung Fu Panda (3) – The animated surprise that kicks harder than anyone expects. Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull (2) – Aliens? Fridges? And the first real internet backlash blockbuster. The Dark Knight (1) – Ledger's Joker, Nolan's vision, and the box office juggernaut that changed the game. But is it...good? IN THIS EPISODE: Phoenix defends Kung Fu Panda as top-tier animation with real heart and craft. Jason revisits Hancock and some tone deaf creative choices. Can Mamma Mia! actually work as a movie? Was Crystal Skull ever really that bad, or just a victim of overhype? And does The Dark Knight still hold up as the superhero movie to beat?

In Episode 407 of Friends Talking Nerdy, Professor Aubrey and Tim the Nerd dive into a packed lineup of topics, mixing nerd culture, activism, and a little wrestling nostalgia! The episode kicks off with a lively new segment, Best Film/Worst Film, inspired by The John Campea Show. This week, Aubrey and Tim put three legendary directors under the microscope: Steven Spielberg, Rob Reiner, and Quentin Tarantino. They debate and discuss the highs and lows from each filmmaker's career, covering classics like E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial, Close Encounters of the Third Kind, Jurassic Park, This Is Spinal Tap, When Harry Met Sally, The Princess Bride, Pulp Fiction, Kill Bill Volumes 1 and 2, and more — as well as some controversial misfires like Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull. Expect a spirited, insightful discussion full of hot takes and surprising opinions!Next, Professor Aubrey shares her experience participating in another Tesla Takedown protest. Dressed as a narwhal with a sign that boldly declared "Narwhals Against Nazis," she recounts the energy, creativity, and importance of standing up for what's right, blending humor with powerful activism.Tim the Nerd also has a lot to celebrate this week. He talks about his guest spot on The MCU's Bleeding Edge YouTube show, where he joined the crew to break down the 1985 action classic Commando starring Arnold Schwarzenegger. Get Tim's behind-the-scenes take and hear why this cheesy, bullet-riddled movie still holds a special place in action movie history. Finally, Tim discusses the WWE's recent efforts to upload more classic content to their official YouTube channel. He reflects on how YouTube may actually be a better home for some older, niche content — compared to platforms like Peacock — and draws interesting parallels to how beloved shows like Jeopardy find new life through accessible streaming options. As always, we wish to thank Christopher Lazarek for his wonderful theme song. Head to his website for information on how to purchase his EP, Here's To You, which is available on all digital platforms.Head to Friends Talking Nerdy's website for more information on where to find us online.
Charles Soule (author of the Star Wars: The High Republic series as well as some of the best Star Wars comic books) joins the show to talk all about one of the most controversial and heavily debated Steven Spielberg films: Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull. We all know co-host Josh Robert Thompson goes to bat for this one, but does Soule? We dive into the George Lucas of it all, a topic that Soule has a lot of insight into considering how closely he has studied Lucas's output while he plays in that massive Star Wars sandbox. There's a healthy range of opinion on this title and you're going to get some unfiltered opinions that range from "are you crazy?" to "don't be so mean" as three self-identified Indiana Jones nerds break down the fourth installment (and final Spielberg-directed entry) of this iconic series. In this episode we get to catch up with a legend in BMX Eddie Fiola. Edward Lynn "Eddie" Fiola[1] (born Sep 28, 1964) is an American former professional freestyle BMX rider, and a film stuntman. In 1982 Bob Morales started up the ASPA (Amateur Skatepark Association which would later become the AFA or American Freestyle Association) and began the legendary king of the skateparks competitions in the USA.[2] Eddie Fiola would go on to win it a total of 5 times along with 4 freestyle Nora (Number One Rider Award) cups including the first one ever to be awarded in 1985 and with having the idea for the potts modification or hollow stem bolt.[3][4] This led to him becoming one of the most famous and highly paid freestyle BMX riders of his time reputedly earning around $100,000 in a year and appearing on the cover of countless magazines.[5][6] Later he became a stuntman in films such as The Dukes of Hazzard, The Italian Job and Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull.
REAL LIFE Devon: We celebrated Nolan's Mario-themed birthday party at Chuck E. Cheese's, and it was pure Mario madness—even down to LEGO sets! At home, we dove into the SNES Classic, revisiting classics like Super Mario World and Mario Kart. Speaking of Mario Kart, Ben has a lot of thoughts about kart racing games. Oh, and let's not forget Super Metroid made a cameo in our gaming nostalgia. Steven: Exciting news! We're now on YouTube! Check out The Science Faction Podcast for all our latest episodes and content. Also, Steven got his hands on the 5-disc Complete Collector's Edition of Blade Runner. Talk about sci-fi collector goals! Ben: Ben's been under the weather—boo! But that meant more movie time—yay! He's here to defend rewatching so-called "terrible" films like Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull. But hey, the Indiana Jones videogame nails the adventure vibe. Steven couldn't agree more—there's nothing better than punching Nazis! Also, fun fact: The Matrix reused sets from Dark City, which Roger Ebert loved so much he even recorded commentary tracks for it. And yes, both Ben and Devon admit to falling asleep during The Phantom Menace... in theaters. Oops! FUTURE OR NOW Ben: "The Buddhists Know How to Party" might sound like an odd statement, but Ben dives into the Five Remembrances of the Buddha, a reflection on aging, illness, and impermanence. It really got Devon thinking about Stoicism. Curious? You can read them here: I am of the nature to grow old. There is no way to escape growing old. I am of the nature to have ill-health. There is no way to escape having ill-health. I am of the nature to die. There is no way to escape death. All that is dear to me and everyone I love are of the nature to change. There is no way to escape being separated from them. My actions are my only true belongings. I cannot escape the consequences of my actions. My actions are the ground on which I stand. Steven: Steven brings up a serious topic: the insurance crisis in California. State Farm is pulling out of the state due to restrictions on raising rates, leaving them unable to cover major disasters like the LA fires. They currently have about $3 billion, but with an estimated $4 billion needed for payouts, this gap could lead to insolvency. Who's at fault—the state for blocking rate hikes or the companies for not adjusting sooner? Steven urges us not to "Luigi the wrong people" in this situation. BOOK CLUB This Week: We took a deep dive into Ursula K. Le Guin's "The Ones Who Walk Away From Omelas" from The Wind's Twelve Quarters. You can read it here. Ben found it "super fascinating," while Devon unpacked its core themes: a utopia sustained by the suffering of one child and the moral quandary of staying or walking away. Ben summed it up with, "The terror of not knowing keeps people away." Also, Devon joked that Omelas could just be Salem spelled backward—thanks, Oregon road signs! Devon also mused, "Ethics cannot be logically discerned." Next Week: Get ready for Philip K. Dick's "We Can Remember It For You Wholesale" (1966). Here's a PDF. And no, Devon—you can't just watch Total Recall instead!

In 1992, the Smithsonian Museum in Washington D.C. acquired a mysterious artifact with unclear origins known as the Crystal Skull. It was the size of an average human skull, made of milky white quartz, but more importantly, it was said to hold supernatural powers and ancient wisdom. And it wasn't the only one… Those who've come into contact with the skulls have had prophetic visions, disturbing dreams and have even encountered deadly curses – but to this day, no one knows who made the skulls, or why. Nobody sets out to make a bad movie. And yet, it happens. A lot. Especially when it comes to sequels. Hollywood can't resist going back to the well when a movie captures a passionate audience – and makes lots of money. But again and again sequels disappoint, and in some cases, can be so bad they kill a franchise. So join the Great Pop Culture Debate as it focuses on the most dreadful of duds, the most creatively bankrupt of flops, as we debate the Worst Movie Sequels. J.T. and Chuck Shute discuss the distribution challenges of J.T.'s movie "Ancient Angels" on Vimeo and Amazon Prime. They delve into conspiracy theories about aliens, UFOs, and interdimensional beings, referencing movies like "Close Encounters of the Third Kind" and "Indiana Jones and the Crystal Skull." They explore the idea that advanced civilizations like Tataria might have been buried under the ground, citing examples like Gobekli Tepe and Lake Mead. They also touch on the role of religion, particularly Christianity, in society, emphasizing love and non-judgment. Rerun: Henry Winkler, an accomplished water-skier, had asked the producers of ‘Happy Days' if he could showcase his skills on the sitcom. On 20th September, 1977 his wish came true - in a shark-jumping sequence so absurd it would forever be linked with the irreversible artistic decline of long-running TV series. To ‘Jump the Shark' was a phrase coined some eight years later by college roommates Sean Connolly and Jon Hein, and has since inspired other pop culture idioms including ‘growing the beard' (a TV show that gets better with age) and ‘nuking the fridge' (a ‘jump the shark' for movie franchises, named after Indiana Jones and the Crystal Skull). In this episode, Arion, Rebecca and Olly reveal Winkler's star power as the top turn on Happy Days, and explain why Robin Williams' appearance in the show *wasn't* a dream. Do they say ‘eeeeeeeeeeey' a lot? Exactamundo! In this episode, we dive into the habit of ignoring certain parts of fandom—whether it's pretending Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull never happened or dismissing the Star Wars sequels. But what happens when we apply that same pick-and-choose mentality to our faith? Join us as we explore the dangers of selective belief, where Christians accept the easy and trendy parts of the Gospel while ignoring the challenging truths. We'll pull examples from pop culture and look at what the Bible says about living out the whole truth of our faith, not just the parts we like. Plus, we'll discuss how ignoring the full story—whether in fandom or in faith—affects us in the long run. Don't miss this thought-provoking conversation!

Welcome back to Review It Yourself: The Podcast with the sigh. Film reviews for the eternally unimpressed. Clayton from 'Men Who Like Men Who Like Movies' returns to continue The Donna Noble Chronicles. This week Sean and Clayton discuss The Fires of Pompeii (2008). Discussion Points: -Peeking behind the podcast curtain. -The production values of this episode. -"It's Doctor Who, I'm not exactly going to sit here and moan about it"-Sean shows a shocking lack of self-awareness. -Trivia and facts about the Ancient Roman city of Pompeii. -Clayton and Sean's opinions differ greatly regarding the new series of Doctor Who (2024), particulary costumes. -The dynamic between The Doctor and Donna Noble. -Marcus Nonius Balbus was a prominent figure in Herculaneum, nearby Pompeii. -The CGI stone 'Transformers' in this episode. -Treading the line between entertainment and being respectful to a disaster. -The moral dilemma at the heart of this episode. -Sean and Clayton discuss the new series of Doctor Who (2024) and their opposing opinions. -Clayton brings controversial Indiana Jones opinion, whilst Sean shocks with his Jurassic Park opinion. Raised Questions: -How many times does Sean mention that he's been to Pompeii? -What does Veni, Vidi, Vici mean? -Why did size matter to the Romans? -Does the TARDIS perception filter apply to clothes? -Do you agree with Clayton that the Thirteenth Doctor dressed "like a toddler"? -Do you miss when the Doctor had some "bite" to his character? -Does it get chilly in Italy? -Do you ever skip to the loo? -Does the Gladiator II (2024) trailer make the film look like a pound-shop version of Gladiator (2000)? -Could this episode have worked without the Pyrovillian monsters? -Is the Chief Augur just a "Roman Mystic Meg"? -What was the drinking age in Ancient Rome? [Apparently there was no age restriction]. -Is this peak Doctor Who? Sean Recommends: -Pompeii: The Last Day (BBC Docu-Drama 2003). -Pompeii: The New Dig (BBC Series 2024). -Torchwood (2006-2011). -Jurassic Park: The Lost World (1997). Clayton Recommends: -Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull (2008). -Jurassic Park III (2001). Separatists led by Admiral Trench battle Republic forces led by Anakin and Mace Windu for the Republic shipyards on Anaxes. Rex has an idea of why things are going badly: analytics; the droids know Rex's strategies too well. They plan to take a small squad to the enemy Cyber Center, where intel is processed, to see if they can figure out what's happening. Before leaving, Rex and Cody chat about losing Fives, Echo, and Hevy during the war, which makes me feel bad for Droidbait and Cutup. Rex thinks Echo is alive, because their battle plans are old ones he and Echo drew up, and also because he has to remind us that Echo died several seasons ago.Rex and Cody leave to meet up with their squad for the mission: Clone Force 99, AKA The Bad Batch! Hunter, the leader! Tech, the smart one! Crosshair, the sharpshooter! Wrecker, the big one! These guys seem cool enough to have their own show. They join up with Rex, Cody, and 501st clones Kix and Jesse to find what the Separatists are using to outwit the Republic. Their gunship is shot down, and with a large number of droids incoming, the Bad Batch goes to work showing off their cool skills, which involve Wrecker lifting things, Hunter stabbing things, and Tech saying numbers while Crosshair shoots. The team infiltrates the Cyber Center, break into the computers and discover that the algorithm they've been looking for is a live signal from the planet Skako Minor. When they try to find out who is sending the signal, they get the answer 'CT-1409'. As the clones escape from the facility, Rex reveals that CT-1409 is Echo. Rex is trying to get support for Echo's rescue mission and Anakin suggests highlighting the goal of finding out how the Separatists are predicting their strategy. Did Anakin sexually contract politics from Padme? Then Anakin changes subjects and says that he and Rex need to do that ‘thing'. Rex excuses himself and follows Anakin.Rex watches the door while Anakin Space Times Padme who is positively glowing. Anakin and Padme have an actual conversation and look like they genuinely regret being apart. I think those two kids are going to make it. Anakin is worried about Rex being too attached to personal attachments, Padme suggests that Anakin has made the same mistakes once or twice and Anakin actually cops to it.Obi-Wan rolls up on Rex and makes him sweat trying to find excuses for Anakin's chatting with his wife. Obi-Wan lets him them the hook and says that he hopes Anakin told Padme he says hello. Anakin hasn't grown too much because he looks pissed rather than embarrassed. Is Star Wars allowed to do ‘show don't tell', because that was a great scene. While on their way to Skako Minor Wrecker is working out with a G0NK droid. We told you Dave Filoni was a fan of this podcast. The clones land and are accosted by the aliens from Crystal Skull riding small dragons. Anakin is snatched and taken to their village. Anakin is rescued and it turns out the locals don't want the war to come to their planet.Meanwhile Admiral Trench calls Wat Tambor to tell him the clones are on their way. Wat thinks that the Techno Union has corporate neutrality, but Trench suggests that a black-ops squad might not have a JAG officer to advise them on rules of engagement here. The clones infiltrate the Techno Union base, Wrecker goes absolutely nuts on some droids, suggesting that some Gronkowski DNA might have been involved in his personal mutation. That party cruise is wild. The clones find a Vault-Tec stasis pod and it was Echo all along.https://twitter.com/ClosingCrawlhttps://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/closing-crawl/id1530133296https://www.closingcrawl.com/Merch at: https://bit.ly/spacetimetm

We all owe Steven Spielberg an apology. Not only is Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull not a bad movie, but it's packed full of paranormal easter eggs and references to REAL supernatural events. Among those, is the legend of AKATOR, an ancient civilization full of golden temples and ancient mummified aliens. In the 1980's, a number of real life explorers decided to head into the jungle to try and find it... but none of those individuals would ever be seen again...Follow us on Twitter, Instagram, and YouTubeJoin our Secret Society Facebook CommunitySupport us on Patreon.com/ThisParanormalLife to get access to weekly bonus episodes!Buy Official TPL Merch! - thisparanormallife.com/storeIntro music by www.purple-planet.comResearch by Ewen Friers Hosted on Acast. In 1924, a mysterious crystal skull was retrieved from an ancient Mayan pyramid temple that hadn't been opened for approximately 1000 years. According to Bill Homann, the skull was first seen by a 17-year-old girl, Anna ‘Sammy' Mitchell-Hedges, who told her adopted father, the British explorer F.A. Mitchell-Hedges, what she had seen during the exploratory dig. Upon her father's passing in 1959, ‘Sammy' became the custodian of the crystal skull, which she learned was part of a collection of 13 that were all extraterrestrial in origin. In 2007, upon her 100th birthday, Sammy handed over custody of the skull to Homann, who she trained to interact with and communicate with the skull. Homann has ever since traveled the world to expose people to the skull which has the effect of accelerating consciousness. In this sit-down interview on July 16, Holman introduces the viewer to the Mitchell-Hedges skull, and they have the opportunity to feel its unique consciousness-expanding energy, which was clearly felt by Dr. Michael Salla and others present in the room. IN THIS EPISODE: Does the mysterious ancient “Crystal Skull of Doom” really have mystical, paranormal properties? (The Crystal Skull's Stare of Death) *** Was the unidentified man found dead on an Adelaide beach in 1948 a Cold War spy? (The Taman Shud Case) *** Two boys exploring the woods in Long Island, New York, found more than just the chestnuts they were looking for. (The Waldron Woods Mystery) *** One pupil discovers that Mystery Meat Monday isn't the only thing to fear when heading to lunch at the school cafeteria. (The Student In The Cafeteria) *** It's amazing the extraordinary lengths our world leaders will go to in order to cover up reports of alien aircraft sightings and the like. And we know they are covering them up, because occasionally they do come clean about it – as they did in the 1980s in Britain. (UFOs: When Governments Come Clean) *** A woman wake up to discover her husband has disappeared from the bed and she can't find him. But after looking through the house, she finds something surprising waiting for her in the bedroom. (I Went Missing From Our Bed) *** A man begins hearing strange noises – only later to discover something extraterrestrial embedded in his ear. (Alien Ear Implant) *** On a hot, sunny, summer Saturday in 1966, three young women in bathing suits left all of their belongings on crowded beach and climbed aboard a motorboat on Lake Michigan. They were never seen again. (Young Women Lost) *** A young boy braves a snow storm and walks miles to the nearest town to try and get medicine for his ailing mother and siblings. On the verge of giving up, a warm-hearted stranger walking his dog comes into sight. But who walks a dog in the middle of a winter snow storm? (A Warm Meeting in Deadly Winter) *** On a quiet street in California sits a stately brick house swarming with paranormal activity… so much so, that Whaley House has been deemed the most haunted house in America.
