Lev Davídovich Bronstein (Yánovka, Ucrania, 26 de octubre/jul./ 7 de noviembre de 1879 -Ciudad de México, 21 de agosto de 1940), más conocido como León Trotski, fue un político y revolucionario soviético. Aunque inicialmente simpatizó con los mencheviques y tuvo disputas ideológicas y personales con el líder bolchevique, Vladímir Lenin, Trotski fue uno de los organizadores clave de la Revolución de Octubre, que permitió a los bolcheviques tomar el poder en noviembre de 1917 en Rusia. Durante la guerra civil, subsiguiente, desempeñó el cargo de comisario de asuntos militares. Negoció la retirada de Rusia de la Primera Guerra Mundial mediante la Paz de Brest-Litovsk. Tuvo a su cargo la creación del Ejército Rojo, que consolidaría definitivamente los logros revolucionarios, venciendo a un pobre apoyo de ejércitos extranjeros y a los ejércitos blancos durante la guerra civil rusa; apoyó al Terror Rojo​ y fue condecorado con la Orden de la Bandera Roja. Posteriormente, se enfrentó política e ideológicamente a Iósif Stalin, liderando la oposición de izquierda, lo que le causó el exilio y posterior asesinato. Tras su exilio de la Unión Soviética, fue el líder de un movimiento internacional de izquierda revolucionaria identificado con el nombre de trotskismo y caracterizado por la idea de la «revolución permanente». En 1938, fundó la Cuarta Internacional. Murió asesinado en México por Ramón Mercader, un agente español del NKVD soviética, por orden de Stalin

Sus orígenes hay que ir a buscarlos mucho más lejos, a la invasión inglesa del siglo XII y, sobre todo, a las plantaciones del Úlster del siglo XVII, que convirtieron al norte en la única región irlandesa de mayoría protestante. La fractura religiosa se superpuso a la nacional hasta volverse indistinguible con el tiempo. El IRA fue una sucesión de distintos grupos que se sucedieron y que, en ocasiones, se enfrentaron entre sí. Tras la guerra de la independencia y el tratado anglo-irlandés de 1921 que partió la isla, el republicanismo armado quedó relegado a la clandestinidad durante décadas. Los “Troubles” no surgieron de aquel viejo IRA, sino de la discriminación que el régimen unionista del Úlster ejercía contra los católicos en vivienda, empleo y reparto electoral. El movimiento por los derechos civiles de finales de los 60 se encontró con represión policial, algo que agravó el despliegue del Ejército en 1969, los internamientos sin juicio de 1971 y algunos episodios como el Domingo Sangriento de 1972. De todo ello se aprovechó una escisión del IRA que se autodenominó IRA Provisional. Sus miembros abogaban por una guerra larga de desgaste mediante atentados y asesinatos selectivos, simple terrorismo no muy distinto al que los extremistas de aquella época practicaban en otras partes de Europa. Pero el caso de Irlanda del Norte fue peculiar. Allí los partidarios de mantenerse en el Reino Unido formaron organizaciones “lealistas” que eran muy violentas y que, en ocasiones, colaboraban con el Estado. Las huelgas de hambre de 1981 regalaron al IRA una generación de mártires y dieron paso a la estrategia del fusil y la urna, mediante la cual, mientras una parte del movimiento, el Partido Sinn Féin, mantenía la lucha armada, otra participaba en política. Fue ya en los años 90 cuando se empezó a negociar, un proceso que consumió mucho tiempo y que culminó con el Acuerdo de Viernes Santo de 1998 que reconocía una amplia autonomía política para Irlanda del Norte y abría la puerta a la reunificación con la República de Irlanda . El IRA se desarmó años después y el Sinn Féin hoy gobierna el Úlster. Los “Troubles” no surgieron de aquel viejo IRA, sino de la discriminación que el régimen unionista del Úlster ejercía contra los católicos en vivienda, empleo y reparto electoral. El movimiento por los derechos civiles de finales de los 60 se encontró con represión policial, algo que agravó el despliegue del Ejército en 1969, los internamientos sin juicio de 1971 y algunos episodios como el Domingo Sangriento de 1972. De todo ello se aprovechó una escisión del IRA que se autodenominó IRA Provisional. Sus miembros abogaban por una guerra larga de desgaste mediante atentados y asesinatos selectivos, simple terrorismo no muy distinto al que los extremistas de aquella época practicaban en otras partes de Europa. Pero el caso de Irlanda del Norte fue peculiar. Allí los partidarios de mantenerse en el Reino Unido formaron organizaciones “lealistas” que eran muy violentas y que, en ocasiones, colaboraban con el Estado. Las huelgas de hambre de 1981 regalaron al IRA una generación de mártires y dieron paso a la estrategia del fusil y la urna, mediante la cual, mientras una parte del movimiento, el Partido Sinn Féin, mantenía la lucha armada, otra participaba en política. Fue ya en los años 90 cuando se empezó a negociar, un proceso que consumió mucho tiempo y que culminó con el Acuerdo de Viernes Santo de 1998 que reconocía una amplia autonomía política para Irlanda del Norte y abría la puerta a la reunificación con la República de Irlanda . El IRA se desarmó años después y el Sinn Féin hoy gobierna el Úlster. En la ruidosa Bogotá, la capital colombiana que reúne a unos ocho millones de habitantes, varias personas expresan incertidumbre de cara a los comicios del domingo, especialmente por el tema de la inseguridad. El país se ha visto sacudido por una fuerte ola de violencia que no solo afecta al campo, con ataques de grupos armados, sino también a las ciudades, con el aumento de la delincuencia común. Norma, vendedora ambulante en el parque de Lourdes, cerca del centro de la ciudad, asegura que la presencia policial ha aumentado en los últimos meses. "Por aquí en el parque de Lourdes robaban seguido a la gente, pero ya como que está más calmado". Manuel trabaja en un banco y no comparte esa visión. Según él, el responsable de la situación es el gobierno de izquierda saliente, cuyo partido apoya a Cepeda. "Esto está súper peligroso. Hay mucha inseguridad. Creo que desde hace como cuatro años se incrementó el tema en Bogotá. Antes no era así, ¿sabes? Yo creo que esto ocurre porque el gobierno no apoya a las alcaldías locales, no les da la capacidad policial que necesitan. Y también, obviamente, porque las autoridades son muy benevolentes a la hora de castigar a los delincuentes. Eso hace que haya mucha más delincuencia", sostiene. A unas calles, Camilo, un estudiante de 20 años, reconoce la necesidad de actuar contra la violencia, pero desde una perspectiva social. "El candidato Abelardo de la Espriella promueve mucho la seguridad, pero una seguridad inmediata. Y esa seguridad inmediata puede llevar, no sé si recuerdan, a casos como los 'falsos positivos' en la época de Álvaro Uribe [ejecuciones extrajudiciales de civiles, asesinados por el Ejército y presentados falsamente como guerrilleros muertos en combate, que ocurrieron masivamente durante la presidencia Uribe entre 2002 y 2008]. En Bogotá podría pasar algo así, que de la Espriella quiera resultados ya, pero sin que existan la infraestructura ni los medios para lograrlos. Iván Cepeda, en cambio, propone una seguridad basada en oportunidades: más universidades, para que la gente no robe sino que vaya a estudiar". Tanto el candidato de izquierda, Cepeda, como el de ultraderecha, de la Espriella, coinciden en la necesidad de enfrentar la violencia que azota al país, pero difieren en las fórmulas.
