In this episode, I sit down with Candice Bourgeois, who is currently in the certification program, to explore her journey from teaching with formulaic cues to becoming a true movement detective. We talk about what it actually means to see movement differently—not as something to fix, but as something to understand. Candice shares how she moved from focusing on shapes and peak poses to observing patterns, relationships, and compensation in a much more meaningful way. We also dive into how this shift has transformed not only her teaching, but her own body awareness. Instead of forcing outcomes, she now helps clients reduce pain by improving how they move and perceive their bodies. The result? More clarity, more confidence, and clients who feel stronger, more connected, and more empowered in their practice.

Beka Goedde and Mandolyn Wilson Rosen join me this episode to unpack our experience visiting renowned artist, Louise Bourgeois' home in NYC. We entered her historic brownstone and were immediately transported to another world and time. Louise lived a full life but was very much an artistic homebody. She made her home her studio in every sense of the word, stuffing each room full of materials to be on hand whenever inspiration struck. She found a way to balance family life with making her work and rode out long career lulls with grace and determination. From 1933 to 1988, the liberal spiritualist wing of the trans-Atlantic bourgeoisie had something of a think tank for spiritual and cult technology and grand strategy in the yearly gatherings of philosophers, psychologists, and anthropologists like Carl Jung, Mircea Eliade, and Gershom Scholem, known as Eranos and organized by the wealthy socialite and occultist Olga Fröbe-Kapteyn at a lakeside resort in Switzerland. Jung disciple Gustav Heyer memorably called their activities there Aetherhurerei “aether whoredom”. I am joined by Scott Ryan of The Dustlight Archives Podcast for the opening episode of a series on this little-known but very important gathering which has deep links both with earlier modern “gnostic” and bourgeois-occult, satanic-orientalist secret society movements, contemporaneous developments like the Nazis as well as the proto-hippie youth movements of which Nazism was the shadow, and also NXIVM and other present-day developments of the same social and spiritual technologies of the ruling-class vanguard, which Scott is covering so brilliantly on his show. Denise Z. Davidson joins Jana Byars to talk about Surviving Revolution: Bourgeois Lives and Letters (Cornell UP, 2025). The book explores how two wealthy and well-connected families with roots in Lyon responded to the French Revolution and the resulting transformations. In building a new political system based on liberty, equality, and fraternity, the French Revolution encouraged both individuals and families to recognize their power to shape the world through political action, rethink their strategies in negotiating intimate relations and family life, and assess both terrifying new risks and enticing opportunities for advancement. Denise Z. Davidson traces two families' trajectories and weaves together the strategies they employed to survive and hopefully thrive in the decades that followed the Revolution. Their private correspondence shows that affect and interest, intimacy and property, are mutually constitutive, and cannot be "thought" separately. Her analysis reveals what it meant to be bourgeois, how gender played a role in the formation of class identities, and how family and emotional life overlapped with other arenas. These social and cultural themes are woven into the narrative through the stories told in the families' letters. By viewing dramatic historical events through the eyes of people who lived through them, Surviving Revolution illuminates how the practices of everyday life shaped emerging notions of bourgeois identity.

This episode features a live audience conversation and tasting at The Oenophile Institute in Smyrna, GA with Arnaud Bourgeois, the General Manager of Domaine Henri Bourgeois in the Loire Valley of France. For 10 generations, his family has been helping people discover and appreciate the unique terroirs of Sancerre. He shares his passion for being in a role as an ambassador for the region, and we collectively discuss the role of wine education in helping people unlock the beauty of the wines from the Loire Valley. Following in the footsteps of his family of winegrowers, Arnaud studied viticulture and oenology in Mâcon for two years before going on to study wine sales, marketing, and commercialization at the Tecomah center in Paris. He also worked for several estates in the Rhône Valley and traveled to South Africa several times during the harvest season, so we talk about how his winemaking has been influenced by various locations throughout his studies. His versatility allows him to be in contact with production, professional customers, and journalists in order to constantly improve the wines from the vine to the glass. His heart is clearly anchored in his role within the vineyards, but he also recognizes the importance of his business decisions in distribution and production, especially within the current political and social climate. You can visit https://famillebourgeois-sancerre.com/en to learn more about their family history, their wines, and their philosophy in the vineyards.

THE ARTISTIC AND ROMANTIC BOND BETWEEN BERTHE MORISOT AND ÉDOUARD MANETColleague Sebastian Smee. Berthe Morisot and her sister Edma were talented painters from a haute bourgeois family who successfully exhibited at the Salon, though society expected them to eventually prioritize marriage over art. In 1869, the unmarried Berthe met Édouard Manet at the Louvre, leading to a complex relationship that resembled a Jane Austen novel. Manet, struck by Berthe's dark, Spanish features, asked her to pose for his painting The Balcony. Although Manet was married to Suzanne—a Dutch pianist he had wed under complicated circumstances involving a hidden son—he and Berthe engaged in a mutual flirtation. Their families became close, attending weekly soirées together, but Manet's marriage remained an impediment to any romantic union with Berthe. Despite the social restrictions requiring chaperones, Manet's influence drove Berthe's artistic development, just as her presence influenced his work. NUMBER 2 1872

Bourgeois Coldness (Divided Publishing, 2025) refers to an affective strategy that offers an explanation for how self-preservation works. Bourgeois coldness is one of the most advanced affective and aesthetic forms of preserving the structure of the colonial status quo. It creates an affective shelter in the world, unencroached upon by the immediate consequences of its many catastrophes. It functions like air conditioning – a complex technology which reliably stabilises the climate until those inside consider it natural. Bourgeois spaces – institutional and affective – stay cool and pleasant.
