What if the fastest way to steady your life in uncertain times is to serve someone else? In this episode of The Lit Up Life, I sit down with Mike Bourgeois to talk about servant leadership, volunteerism, and what happens when you choose to give back in seasons that feel chaotic or heavy. Mike shares the stories that shaped him, from Big Brothers Big Sisters to Make-A-Wish, to building a skate park that brought kids together after COVID, and even supporting projects that create sustainable change through access to clean water and resources. This conversation is not about being perfect or saving the world. It's about remembering that when you lead with humility, listen deeply, and show up with real intention, you change lives, including your own. How giving back helps regulate fear and brings you back to peace The unexpected way volunteer leadership strengthens your leadership at work Why serving without ego creates real community impact and lasting fulfillment If you have been feeling restless, disconnected, or caught in the noise of the world, this episode will remind you what is still true. Purpose is often found in action. Subscribe and listen to Season 8, Episode 2 now, and let this be your reminder that service is not an extra thing. It is a path back to clarity. Meet Mike Bourgeois A dad of three and a builder at heart, passionate about helping others unlock their full potential. From biohacking and manifesting to treehouses, Disney, and National Parks, he lives life with curiosity, adventure, and purpose. When he's not exploring real estate projects or shredding mountains on a bike or snowboard, he's sharing insights to inspire growth in everyone around him.
First externally attested in 1524, the Ming-dynasty Chinese novel Water Margin collects legends about a band of merry men of genius who love righteousness, and who fight to stop a corrupt imperial bureaucracy from exploiting the people. However, the leader of these social bandits, Song Jiang, comes to see his mission in terms of a monarchist restorationism which is a common conservative reaction to capitalist upheaval in early modernity, known internationally by the Russian name “Good Tsar, Bad Boyars”—the breakdown of feudal order under market relations is blamed on the ministers around the monarch, while the monarch himself is seen as a pure, ideal figure who must only be rescued from corruption and he will save the world. Midway through the longer versions of the novel—there are countless versions with different political slants and (on the original prints) commentary on every page by various ideologues of the time—Song Jiang finally receives his longed-for imperial pardon, but now the heroes must join the imperial army as an elite unit fighting to put down rebellions much like their own across the country, as promises of elevation to the bureaucracy are deferred again and again. When (after the smartest of the heroes go back to the thug life) they finally receive their emoluments and sinecures and retire to their country villas, one by one they are poisoned by the bureaucrats with (as the narrator quasi-grudgingly admits) the full knowledge of the emperor. A final poignant scene caps the long debate throughout the novel between Song Jiang and his loyal and simple stalwart Iron Ox, who has argued throughout against Song Jiang's monarchist fantasies and in favor of something like socialism and democracy. Giving the lie to Eurocentric ideas that revolution is alien to East Eurasia where “oriental despotism” prevails—in fact, the roots of modernity including the modern revolutionary tradition lie in the East—this novel had a tremendous influence on China's thwarted bourgeois revolution, Japan's successful bourgeois revolution (it, far more than the Kojiki or anything else, is the bible of the Japanese right wing and the foundation of Japanese monarchism), and a complicated legacy in China's socialist revolution. In Red Star Over China, Mao is seen praising the Water Margin as an inspiration, but during the Great People's Cultural Revolution he held it up as a “negative example” (反面教材), calling Song Jiang's desire for a pardon “capitulationism” and equating it to the attitude of the capitalist roaders. So who was correct: Song Jiang or Iron Ox? Hosted on Acast. See acast.com/privacy for more information.

THE ARTISTIC AND ROMANTIC BOND BETWEEN BERTHE MORISOT AND ÉDOUARD MANETColleague Sebastian Smee. Berthe Morisot and her sister Edma were talented painters from a haute bourgeois family who successfully exhibited at the Salon, though society expected them to eventually prioritize marriage over art. In 1869, the unmarried Berthe met Édouard Manet at the Louvre, leading to a complex relationship that resembled a Jane Austen novel. Manet, struck by Berthe's dark, Spanish features, asked her to pose for his painting The Balcony. Although Manet was married to Suzanne—a Dutch pianist he had wed under complicated circumstances involving a hidden son—he and Berthe engaged in a mutual flirtation. Their families became close, attending weekly soirées together, but Manet's marriage remained an impediment to any romantic union with Berthe. Despite the social restrictions requiring chaperones, Manet's influence drove Berthe's artistic development, just as her presence influenced his work. NUMBER 2 1872

Hello Interactors,Spain's high-speed trains feels like a totally different trajectory of modernity. America prides itself on being the tech innovator, but nowhere can we blast 180 MPH between city centers with seamless transfers to metros and buses…and no TSA drudgery. But look closer and the familiar comes into view — rising car ownership, rush-hour congestion (except in Valencia!), and growth patterns that echo America. I wanted to follow these parallel tracks back to the nineteenth-century U.S. rail boom and forward to Spain's high-spe ed era. Turns out it's not just about who gets faster rail or faster freeways, but what kind of growth they lock in once they arrive.TRAINS, CITIES, AND CONTRADICTIONSMy wife and I took high-speed rail (HSR) on our recent trip to Spain. My first thought was, “Why can't we have nice things?”They're everywhere.Madrid to Barcelona in two and a half hours. Barcelona to Valencia, Valencia back to Madrid. Later, Porto to Lisbon. Even Portugal is in on it. We glided out of city-center stations, slipped past housing blocks and industrial belts, then settled into the familiar grain of Mediterranean countryside at 300 kilometers an hour. The Wi-Fi (mostly) worked. The seats were comfortable. No annoying TSA.Where HSR did not exist or didn't quite fit our schedule, we filled gaps with EasyJet flights. We did rent a car to seek the 100-foot waves at Nazaré, Portugal, only to be punished by the crawl of Porto's rush-hour traffic in a downpour. Within cities, we took metros, commuter trains, trams, buses, bike share, and walked…a lot. From the perspective of a sustainable transportation advocate, we were treated to the complete “nice things” package: fast trains between cities, frequent rail and bus service inside them, and streets catering to human bodies more than SUVs. What surprised me, though, was the way these nice things coexist with growth patterns that look — in structural terms — uncomfortably familiar. In this video

Join the Cork Board Cadre today!patreon.com/ParaPowerMappingWe're resuming our admirably thorough subtextual mapping of Pynchon's Shadow Ticket, and no expense is being spared as we embark on a discursive, brief history of class warfare; the development of the false flag, one of the capitalist class's favored strikebreaking counterinsurgent stratagems; and the erection of the anticommunist surveillance apparatus, systemized forms of domestic political control that bedded in during the 19th century and which serve as historical backdrop to the dialoguing narratives of ST and AtD.Please subscribe to one of the PPM Patreon paid tiers to support our ongoing, interwoven deep political and Pynchonian analysis efforts. Get stuck in – Michael Bourgeois, CWT How do standards get written in ways that working water treaters can actually meet? In this conversation, AWT Past President, current Related Trade Organization (RTO) Committee Chair, and Chemco Products Company Operations Manager, Michael Bourgeois CWT, explains how AWT's liaisons collaborate with peer organizations, so guidance reflects field reality—operations, risk, and achievable compliance. From Field Bags to Board Rooms: Why RTOs Matter Bourgeois outlines the purpose of AWT's RTO structure: volunteer liaisons track and influence work at groups whose missions overlap with industrial water—CTI, ABMA, ASHRAE, AWWA, ASHE, and others. The aim is simple and practical: make sure member voices are heard so guidance advances health outcomes (e.g., Legionella control) and day-to-day feasibility for service providers and suppliers. Turning Reaction into Proaction Historically, the industry learned about new rules after they landed. Bourgeois details how AWT is shifting to co-authoring cooling-water guidelines with CTI and re-engaging ABMA, so boiler-water limits and methods reflect current technologies and operations. The model: clarify shared goals, contribute content expertise, and formalize collaboration so members get usable documents at member pricing. Concrete Moves: Boiler Water, Healthcare, and More Examples include AWT's role on ABMA's Boiler Expo steering committee (with a focused water-treatment training block) and early conversations with ASHE on pathogen control in building and healthcare water systems. He describes how liaisons feed updates into a formal committee cadence, so the AWT Board and members see progress—not just headlines. When working professionals help write the playbook, outcomes improve clients, operators, and public health—and members stop "reacting" to standards they had no hand in shaping. Berthe Morisot and Édouard Manet: Art, Affection, and the Struggle Against Bourgeois Expectations. Sebastian Smee discusses how the Impressionists lived amidst the violence of the 1870 Franco-Prussian War. Berthe Morisot came from the wealthy haute bourgeoisie and, along with her sister Edma, became a serious painter, successfully exhibiting at the Salon. However, women of their background were expected to marry and give up painting. Berthe, still unmarried at 29 in 1869, was devoted to her art when she met Édouard Manet at the Louvre. Manet was captivated by Berthe and invited her to pose for The Balcony. Despite precautions, a mutual flirtation developed, though Manet was married to Suzanne, which stood as an impediment.

Britain's most popular pint has a major flaw. It takes 2 minutes to pour. This should put people off. Most of us don't love waiting at the bar. And yet, despite this flaw, one in every nine British pints sold is Guinness. Why? Well, today's guest, behavioural scientist Richard Shotton, says it's down to some evidence-backed consumer psychology. --- Read Hacking The Human Mind: https://amzn.to/47lpcbT Sign up for my newsletter: https://www.nudgepodcast.com/mailing-list Connect on LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/phill-agnew-22213187/ Watch Nudge on YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/@nudgepodcast/ --- Today's sources Aronson, E., Willerman, B., & Floyd, J.
