Diese Woche gibt es keine reguläre Deutschland3000-Folge, stattdessen packe ich euch in den Feed die erste Folge von meinem neuen Projekt „Battle of the Nerds“. Und das ist eigentlich kein Podcast, das ist mehr eine Gameshow. Und die mache ich auch gar nicht alleine, sondern zusammen mit Ralph Caspers. Ich kann es immer noch nicht fassen, dass das wirklich passiert. In dieser Gameshow geht es um Fandoms, um popkulturelle Riesenphänomene wie James Bond, The Simpsons, Game of Thrones oder jetzt gleich in dieser allerersten Folge Star Wars. Und vielleicht ist da jetzt direkt auch so ein Fandom dabei, dem ihr euch total zugehörig fühlt, wo ihr alle Folgen weggesuchtet habt und ganz tief drinsteckt. Dann solltet ihr euch das auf keinen Fall entgehen lassen. Vielleicht geht es euch aber auch mehr so wie mir und ihr habt noch nie eine Folge Simpsons gesehen und seid auch bei Game of Thrones jetzt nicht so wirklich eingestiegen. Dann ist dieses Format „Battle of the Nerds“ vielleicht der ideale Einstieg, um sich mal mit etwas zu befassen, was ja gefühlt um einen herum alle weggebinged haben. So oder so würde ich mich unheimlich freuen, wenn ihr mal reinhört. Wir hatten alle einen Heidenspaß bei der Produktion und ich hoffe, hoffe, euch geht es auch so beim Hören. Also, ganz viel Spaß! Welcome back to Black Hoodie Alchemy, folks! This time around, I have a solo episode diving deeply into something that has really saved me over my medical recovery this year: my nerd fandoms. And I do it all with the help of my friend and colleague, Eric Millar's beautifully written book: The Four Color Grimoire, taking the time to read the first five chapters.Comic books, video games, movies, television, and pop culture do something for us that is often hard to describe. Past the corporate mill that churns out sales according to data, these ideas often stem from the genuine and unique places within a creator's life, mind and spirit. Things like comic books and video games have long since been a lifeblood for unique story-telling that would not be given a chance in other medias. And when they get into real world-building, it becomes an even greater inspiration. Whether its Spider-Man, Lord of the Rings, Star Wars or Trek, Fallout, et cetera, these stories and lores and characters strike at archetypal components of our imagination and can help us connect with ourselves in new ways that other schools of thought or spiritual traditions might have trouble addressing properly. Nerd fandoms are unbound aside from the artistic spirit that creates them, and this not only gives them utility beyond our regular traditions, but separates them from those traditions. It would be improper to call superheroes modern analogues of old gods, because they represent a deeper human authenticity. You've probably seen devoted super fans participating in cos play at Comic-Con, painted in their team's color at a football game or dressed up as their favorite characters at a midnight screening of a film series. But is there something deeper than just fun at play here? Something that aligns more with religion or even sacredness? That's the argument of sociologist Michael Elliott, a professor at Towson University who has studied the culture of Comic-Con for 7 years.
