This month's Fansplaining piece is a bit of a departure from our usual fandom reporting and critical analysis: for the first time, we're very excited to share a virtual art exhibit of sorts, from Toronto-based curators and BTS fans Rea McNamara and Bo Shin. I came to ruin you: The Collecting Practices of K-pop Fandoms was on display at York University this past spring, and what follows is an expanded version of the exhibition's brochure, plus images, videos, and interviews with some of the fan collectors and participating artists Jiwon Choi and Lux Pyre. You can listen to the main text of the piece on this feed, but! We'd highly recommend going to the article itself to see all the images and videos (with descriptive captions and alt-text): https://www.fansplaining.com/articles/i-came-to-ruin-you-the-collecting-practices-of-k-pop-fandoms

May has a lineup of fun fandom holidays, and we are taking advantage of the fun this weekend. Producer KellieAnn is joined again by Jonathan Trujillo King of the Utah Arts Alliance, and new nerdly friend Roger Prows, co-owner of The Nerd Store(s). Together, they discuss their involvement in the local comic, artistic, and pop culture world. Roger expands on the history of Free Comic Book Day, while Jonathan provides the details of Star Wars Day's impact. All three will be seen celebrating both holidays this weekend in downtown Salt Lake City (with the support and displays of our friends at FanX Salt Lake Comic Convention): The Urban Arts Gallery will have their local-artist-contributed Star Wars exhibit, Clark Planetarium will have some galactic photo opportunities with cosplayers, Dr. Volt’s Comic Connection will have comic giveaways and many local comic creators, our FanX Hall of Fame Cosplayer friends will have a cosplay competition, there will be a Star Wars Dance party by the Utah Arts Alliance and much more more! The brains behind Fan Effect are connoisseurs of categories surpassing nerdy with a goal to publish a weekly "What to Watch on the Weekend" minisode taken from KSL-TV's Friday segment, and two deep-dives a month on shows, creative works, artists, local events, and other fandom topics. Based in the beautiful beehive state, Fan Effect celebrates Utah's unique fan culture as it has been declared The Nerdiest State in America by TIME, and is hosted by KSL Movie Show's Andy Farnsworth and KSL Podcasts' KellieAnn Halvorsen. Listen regularly on your favorite platform, at kslnewsradio.com, or on the KSLNewsRadio App. Join the conversation on Facebook @FanEffectShow, or Instagram @FanEffectShow. Fan Effect is sponsored by Megaplex Theatres, Utah's premiere movie entertainment company.

This week the crew gets drunk on sangrias/vodka while talking about different reboots, remakes that we think should or shouldn't happen, and what media would work in other forms? Tezeta deals with fire alarms, Jake goes off about Power Rangers, Devin makes a lot of Drake Bell sexual predator jokes. You know what to do
The discussion centers around the profound significance of representation, particularly focusing on works by Black women authors within the realms of magic and fantasy. We delve into the cultural impact of series such as Wednesday Season 2, where the titular character navigates a world laced with dark humor and supernatural elements. Additionally, we explore the intriguing premise of Heads of State, featuring John Cena as President and Idris Elba as Prime Minister, juxtaposing comedic elements within a political framework. The conversation further extends to the Predator franchise, contemplating the chilling imagery presented in the Predator: Badlands trailer, where iconic trophies like The Engineer skulls and Kaiju references evoke a rich tapestry of intertextuality. Throughout our dialogue, we emphasize the importance of diverse narratives and the necessity of elevating underrepresented voices in speculative fiction.New Episode Alert!Blerd's Eyeview x Andrea Rose WashingtonThis week, we've got magic, monsters, and mayhem all in one episode! Most of us can say that we're fans of something – music, sports, art, books. But what does it mean to be part of a fandom? You've probably seen devoted super fans participating in cos play at Comic-Con, painted in their team's color at a football game or dressed up as their favorite characters at a midnight screening of a film series. But is there something deeper than just fun at play here? Something that aligns more with religion or even sacredness? That's the argument of sociologist Michael Elliott, a professor at Towson University who has studied the culture of Comic-Con for 7 years. Elliott joins The Excerpt to share the results of his deep research into fandoms.See Privacy Policy at https://art19.com/privacy and California Privacy Notice at https://art19.com/privacy#do-not-sell-my-info.

We're so thankful that you are fans of us, especially on this, our fourth podcasting journey into the mouth of Nerdom where we dare ask "Can a fandom ruin a thing?" Perhaps Rick and Morty is a good enough show to overcome the bittersweet Szechuan rage of it's fans. Maybe Swifties do swiftly make some of us reconsider listening to any pop star. And yeah, we reckon with our thoughts on the Punisher. Don't worry, we keep it find funny and find some positives, but yeah, at times things get uglier than Sonic's teeth.Want even more Nerd of Mouth? This month's episode is a sort of follow-up to that from the start of the year, looking at some of the more problematic areas of dinosaurs and palaeontology when it comes to online discussions. There is an online fandom of dinosaurs that treats them like monsters or superheroes, and can fixate on what is and isn't the biggest / strongest / fastest dinosaur and who could beat up who. Joining us to discuss this is Dr Mike O'Sullivan, a palaeontologist and self-professed member of several fandoms. We talk about how this community works and what it means for scientists talking about research. I round out the year of 2024 by taking a look at the concerning fan bases of multiple pop culture fields including pro wrestling. Over the past few years, wrestling fan bases have seemingly been at war with each other. Fans of WWE hating fans of AEW and vice versa. Even the pro wrestling media has been feuding. Has it always been this way? I will examine that question and assure you that it is not just the wrestling community having trouble co-existing with different ideas. Please check out my latest book: DragonKingKarl's Pioneer Era Pro Wrestling Omnibus!

This week, the docs explore the research behind why these relationships form and the different ways we experience them. Welcome to #Millennial, the home of pretend adulting and real talk! It's October, so you know what that means in a Presidential Election year - October Surprises! We reflect on previous October surprises in 2020 and 2016 - oh for simpler times... This week's ballot plug goes to.... THE BIG 7: 7 incumbent Senate Democrats really need to hold onto their seats, especially since Joe Manchin (D?-WV) is noping out of Congress. Split a donation between Ruben Gallego (AZ), Elissa Slotkin (MI), Jon Tester (MT), Jacky Rosen (NV), Sherrod Brown (OH), Bob Casey Jr. (PA), Tammy Baldwin (WI) at Swing Left. Are the most prominent voices amongst toxic fandom figures just out for blood? Some in Hollywood think so. Should there be limits on how much production companies are relying on fan input/focus groups? Has fandom toxicity gotten worse over the years due to the internet and social media? We think so. The slippery slope of fans thinking they know better than creators, and burning those creators when they don't match fan visions. Our very own Pam has seen backlash from toxic fans just for reporting the NEWS. This week's recommendations are a mix of altruism and comfort: Donating to support Hurricane Milton relief (Laura), Balatro on mobile (Andrew), and Snag Tights (Pam). And in this week's installment of After Dark, available on Patreon and Apple Podcasts: Come get cozy with us for what may be the most wholesome discussion to ever happen on this show! Ok, be honest - as adults, do we still sleep with stuffed animals? Each of us brings some special cuddly guests to introduce on the show - some have been in our lives since before we can remember!
