That’s right listener, it’s another episode so soon after the live show as Dave finally SHATTERS his festival hiatus to take on Hard Working Class Heroes 2017 alongside Colm O’Regan and Craig Fitzpatrick, one of whom slept in and missed this recording session. Whoops. Thankfully, a hero came along in the form of Sean Adams […] La entrada NO ENCORE #081 | NO SEANCORE se publicó primero en Headstuff.
Hard Working Class Heroes 2017 took place over the weekend. Since I couldn't go this year I said I'd get the scoop on the festival from two acts playing each day. Swimmers Jackson aka Niall Jackson played the Workman's Club on Friday night, while Aoife from Ae Mak played the same venue the next day. They talk about their experiences from the speed sessions through the shows themselves and who was the best new Irish act they saw over the weekend
Having recently released his fourth album, Nocturnes' The Soft Animal, on Bluestack Records during the summer, singer-songwriter Pearse McGloughlin sits down at Hard Working Class Heroes for a chat. And then sits down a couple weeks later for the rest of the chat. We talk Leonard Cohen (RIP), Pearse's musical journey, solo vs Idiot Songs (with Justin Grounds) and Nocturnes, Sligo, the state of the music industry following Fight Like Apes's farewell message, and much more.
Loose Joints is new podcast hosted by Nialler9 and Sally Cinnamon talking to people about the music they love: old and new. In our second episode (see episode one), we are joined by booze enthusiast Oisin Davis of Great Irish Beverages (incorporating Irish Cocktail Fest, Irish Whiskey Fest and Irish Gin & Tonic Fest) and the creator of Poacher's Tonic. We talk about Oisin's New Jersey upbringing, grown men crying over beautiful songs stuck in traffic, what it's like to support Grandmaster Flash, the beauty of a basso profundo voice - the lowest you can get, a Hard Working Class Heroes highlight, the tune Oisin would like his kids to associate with him and a couple of Belfast bangers. Ahead of Hard Working Class Heroes 2016 this weekend, I chatted to four (or some 100 acts) performing at the new Irish music showcase, Bitch Falcon, Shaker Hymn, Naoise Roo, and Galants. They talk about how they got started, what HWCH means for them, how they've found it in previous years and any tips they have this time round for the festival's 14th (!) edition.
Once director John Carney is in studio to discuss his new musical film Sing Street, an homage to his youth growing up in the 1980's Dublin. He is joined by Angela Dorgan of the Hard Working Class Heroes music festival. They discuss the role of music both in movies and in the day to day lives of young people, and how the pop of the 1980s helped cut through the occasional dreariness of life in Ireland. Sing Street is released on March 17th. Off Topic is a weekly arts and culture podcast from The Irish Times.
Ahead of Hard Working Class Heroes, Chris Somers from Elastic Sleep (playing the Mercantile on Friday at 10.40pm as part of HWCH) joins Eoghan to talk about the festival, the Hozierification of Irish music, and make their picks of what to see. Then, as Girl Band's Irish tour kicks off in Galway, they discuss Holding Hands With Jamie, their debut album, what makes it special and how a cover was crucial to their development.
