When he first gained fame a decade ago, Hoodie Allen was pretty much straight hip-hop. Anchored by songs like "No Interruption" and "No Faith in Brooklyn," his debut EP All American was praised by the music press and debuted at number 10 on the Billboard 200. Over the years, he's collaborated with blackbear, Chance the Rapper, and G-Eazy. Lately, the Long Island native has shifted in a different stylistic direction. His latest single, "Wouldn't That Be Nice," is driven by guitar. He claims his next album won't include much rapping at all, and he's completely happy with that. But let's be clear, this isn't a sudden move. The funk-laced "All About It" with Ed Sheeran came out in 2014. From his home in New York City, Allen talks to Jordan Edwards and Demi Ramos about the early days of his career and how he arrived at this new sound. Don't worry; he still loves hip-hop.

We had the pleasure of interviewing Hoodie Allen over Zoom video!Hoodie Allen reveals the first track debuting his alternative pop-rock emergence, “Wouldn't That Be Nice.” Driven by the emotions of heartbreak, the emo track showcases Hoodie Allen's musical abilities and smashes down preconceptions from his previous releases. Coinciding with the song is an elaborate, cinematic music video portraying the beginning of the upcoming album's storyline. The track is anthemic in its emotional peaks and valleys much like the up and down nature of the relationship it speaks to. The soft start builds into a powerful punk-inspired melody that exemplifies the emotional waves throughout his upcoming album, making it an ideal preview of Hoodie's new direction:“Wouldn't That Be Nice felt like the first single because this is the first time I'm really giving people a storytelling album and it felt like there couldn't be anywhere to start except the beginning of the end. It's about the feeling of still holding on even though there's so much wrong that has transpired. I want to open people up to this world I've created and I think Wouldn't That Be Nice showcases all the highs and lows and the range of dynamics. Therefore, it is the perfect appetizer for what's to come.” - Hoodie AllenHoodie Allen delivers heartbreak-inspired emo hooks in the latest iteration of his ever-evolving musical journey. His upcoming eight-track album weaves between infectious pop melodies juxtaposed with punk guitar riffs. A sonic departure from his usual playful raps, the record takes listeners on a highly personal journey of the messiness that befalls a breakup. The alternative pop-punk emergence isn't completely unexpected, however, as Hoodie has previously toured with the likes of Fall Out Boy, opened for Panic at the Disco & Twenty One Pilots, and collaborated with Mark Hoppus (of Blink 182) and State Champs. The Brooklyn-based indie musician became an independent sensation when he first formally arrived in 2009. Without a label or management, his 2012 EP All American landed in the Top 10 of Billboard's Top 200, delivering 2 platinum singles, and eventually moving over 250,000 units. His mainstream success led to a collaboration with Ed Sheeran in 2014, which garnered buzz from MTV, Buzzfeed, Billboard, and more. Now he is poised to break all preconceptions with his next genre-shifting release, which was co-written and produced with The Wreck's Nick Anderson. Hoodie's fun-loving yet vulnerably honest take on alternative rock is fueled by his long-time love of punk rock and guaranteed to strike a chord with anyone looking for a vibrant summer soundtrack. We want to hear from you! Joining the show in this episode is musician Alex Howard (Conditions, Sleeping With Sirens, Hoodie Allen, Jelly Roll) to talk about his feelings about the direction the Minnesota Vikings are currently heading and how he became a Vikings fan growing up in Virginia See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
On today's episode, I'm extremely excited to be speaking with Mr. Alex Howard. I first became aware of Alex when discovering his band Conditions back in 2007. They were a band generating a lot of hype back then and they put out a couple of really great records and EPs. I've followed Alex since Conditions became inactive in 2014, as he joined the band Sleeping with Sirens as a touring member. We chat all about that. The history of Conditions, what led him to being a touring musician with other artists. He went on to play for the rapper Hoodie Allen after his stint in Sleeping with Sirens and now he's playing with the musical act Jelly Roll. We even get a really cool story about him meeting the legendary Mike Dirnt and Mark Hoppus. It was an absolute pleasure speaking with Alex. He's always come across as a super likeable, humble, and approachable guy. That was clearly evident during our talk. Enjoy! Conditions is an American rock band from Richmond, Virginia. Conditions was founded in 2006 by members of the previous local bands Motion Picture Demise, Race the Sun, Scarlet and Forever in a Day (FIAD). The group released its first recorded material in 2007 and played Bamboozle and Warped Tour that same year. The group signed with Good Fight Music and released their debut full-length, Fluorescent Youth, in September 2010. This album drew comparisons to bands such as Anberlin, Ivoryline, and Saosin. Their sophomore effort, Full of War, followed in March 2013. On November 7, 2013, the band announced on their Facebook page that they were breaking up. On July 12, 2014 the band played their farewell show and officially broke up. LET'S CONNECT: Kyle's Instagram Kyle's Facebook Email: Kyledevlinfitness@gmail.com

Alex is now pursuing a Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) degree at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, where he is studying the influence of popular music which references anxiety, depression, and suicidal thoughts on the mental health attitudes and behaviors of U.S. youth, and all that relates back to how he used music as a young person to regulate his own depression and anxiety. Alex Howard of Conditions, Sleeping with Sirens, and Hoodie Allen joins the pod this week! Cru Jones is an aggressive teenage BMX racer who lives in a small town with his younger sister Wesley and their mother. Cru is faced with a tough decision: qualify for Helltrack, or take the SAT in order to attend college. Winning Helltrack means $100,000, a new Chevrolet Corvette, and fame. Cru chooses the former option, against his mother's wishes. The Helltrack race is endorsed by the city...and by Duke Best, the duplicitous president of FAB (the Federation of American Bicyclists), who's also the owner of Mongoose Racing. Duke keeps adjusting the rules, in order to keep Cru out of the race, and also to ensure BMX star Bart Taylor has an easy road to victory...thus providing a financial windfall for Mongoose Racing, Bart's sponsor. Numerous BMX racers show up for Helltrack. Cru meets Christian Hollings, who becomes his romantic interest. At Cru's senior prom, he and Christian perform freestyle bike stunts on the dance floor...to the awe of his classmates. After being blocked from the race due to a last-minute rule-change on participant sponsorship, Cru is ready to give up Helltrack...until Wesley customizes a shirt for him to wear at the event. It reads "Cru is...RAD." Inspired by this, Cru and his friends use the money he won from qualifying ($10,000) to found a small T-shirt business: "Rad Racing." However, a few days before the race, Duke changes the rules yet again...claiming any company sponsoring a racer must be worth at least $50,000. When the townspeople hear about this, they rally around Cru; their contributions, particularly a generous donation from wealthy Mr. Timmer, provide Rad Racing with enough money for Cru to enter Helltrack. During Helltrack, Duke bribes the Reynolds twins to take out Cru, but they fail. In the final stretch of the race, Taylor and Cru face each other; Cru ultimately wins Helltrack, while Taylor is dropped from Mongoose Racing. Now aware of Duke's true nature, the entire Mongoose team quits on him. Cru offers Taylor a spot in Rad Racing, while Duke is asked to resign from FAB. Today’s guest is a New York City-based indie pop band composed of brothers Adam (vocals/bass), Jack (vocals/guitar), and Ryan Met (ukulele/piano/vocals). The band is a DIY pop group who write, produce, and mix their own material in the living room of their Chelsea apartment. Their music style has been described as “eclectic”, combining elements of pop, barbershop, electronic, and dubstep music. They have opened for Demi Lovato, Hoodie Allen and the Wanted. In 2013 the trio released their debut independent single, "I'm Ready." Well-received, the track peaked at number 27 on the Billboard Mainstream Top 40 chart, and appeared on an initial EP as well as the band's 2015 full-length debut album, Living Room. Today, the Multi Platinum indie pop trio have made their first Top 10 entry on the Billboard Hot 100 with their hit single, “Bang!”. It cracked Top 10 at three radio formats—peaking at No. 6 on Pop Radio, No. 2 on Alternative Radio and No. 1 on Adult Pop Radio—and is double platinum certified, marking their sixth platinum song to date.
