“It also gave birth to our hospitality program, which was another way to bridge the gap between urban and rural communities so that we could create a conversation around ranching and really a whole community on the ranch beyond the team that was working the land. And today it's very similar to what that original lease mandated. That we really look at land multi-dimensionally and it's become really integral to our mission.”We're in great company with with Tess Leach, Co-Owner and Head of Business Development at Ranchlands, whose mission is to promote the conservation of rangelands, the ranching legacy, and the quality of life for people living and working on ranches in the American West, by providing unforgettable hospitality experiences that connect guests with the natural world and rich heritage of ranching. Ranchlands recently set up a permanent base camp at Paintrock Canyon Ranch in Wyoming—set amidst 80,000 acres of varying landscapes from red sandstone cliffs to an acclaimed fishing creek, with sprawling meadows giving way to wildlife aplenty—inviting guests to immerse themselves in the everyday adventures of their home on the range. As we celebrate Earth Day with this episode, Tess tells a hopeful tale of her life and legacy she shares with her friends and family, in “working together to live with the land,” inviting us all to see the world around us from a different perspective. Top Takeaways[1:50] Raised on a Southern Colorado ranch, Tess discovered early that ranching was as much about sharing the land with curious visitors as it was about cattle operations, instilling a lifelong passion for helping others connect with the rural land she called home.[5:10] Ranchlands was born from a single line in a Colorado state lease agreement that mandated educational opportunities for school children, sparking a multi-dimensional approach to land management that would grow to include hospitality, conservation, and a mission to bridge the gap between urban and rural communities.[7:55] Paintrock Canyon Ranch transformed from an intangible dream into reality thanks to its generous previous owners, becoming a basecamp that embodies everything Tess's family had imagined but never thought possible to own.[14:25] Guests can immerse themselves in the rhythms of western life through three distinctive journeys: intimate Ranch Vacations where days on horseback blend into fireside evenings, transformative Workshops where passions are kindled alongside master craftspeople, and adventurous Pack Trips that lead riders deep into wilderness terrain where few modern travelers ever venture. [21:10] At Ranchlands, conservation isn't just a philosophy but a daily practice woven into everything from their mobile, seasonal camps that give the land essential rest periods to their adaptive grazing plans that shift with nature's rhythms—creating an immersive classroom where guests witness firsthand how thoughtful stewardship and economic sustainability work in harmony.[23:50] Beyond the guest experience, Ranchlands' Mercantile weaves a tapestry of meaningful partnerships—from the transformative collaboration with inmates at Colorado Correctional Institute who craft their leather goods, to family-run knife makers who still send paper receipts by mail—creating a marketplace where every purchase tells a story of connection and purpose.[28:15] The horizon holds two new chapters for Ranchlands: their nonprofit Collective, building bridges between urban and rural communities through education and storytelling, and the expansion of their breathtaking Paintrock Canyon Ranch campus, soon inviting guests to experience this extraordinary landscape in new, immersive ways.Notable MentionsDenver Tent CompanyWyoming Raw MilkGreybull Valley ProduceRanchlands In The City, event at Filson in NYCVisit For YourselfRanchlands Website | Stay at Paintrock Canyon Ranch | @ranchlands
This is episode 219 — a new Governor has sailed into Table Bay. Sir Philip Edmond Wodehouse, born in 1811, eldest child of Edmond Wodehouse who married his first cousin Lucy, daughter of Philip Wodehouse, uncle Philip to Sir Philip Edmond. How very Victorian. Queen Victoria herself, who married her first cousin Prince Albert—did allow and even encourage cousin marriage, particularly among royalty and the upper classes to consolidate power, property, and lineage. But it also increased the risk of birth defects by 2 percent, and if both parents carry a recessive gene mutation, their child has a 25 percent chance of expressing the disorder. Scientists have a well-worn phrase for this — its called inbreeding. Wodehouse junior entered the Ceylon Civil Service in 1828, and was installed as superintendent of British Honduras between 1851 to 1854. From there he sailed to British Guiana where he served as Governor between 1854 to 1861 — before heading to the Cape in 1862. It's illuminating to touch on Sir Philip Wodehouse's disastrous time in British Guiana. Two years after he took office in the South American country, the Angel Gabriel riots broke out. His implacable opponent was John Sayers Orr, whose nom de guerre was the Angel Gabriel, was half Scottish, half African. Edinburgh's Caledonian Newspaper of the time reported that his mother Mary Ann Orr was a respectable coloured woman and married to a respectable Scot — John Orr senior. Young John Sayer Orr was rabidly anti-papal, hated the Pope and had an anti-Catholic obsession. He took to the Guianese streets with bullhorn in hand, whereupon the distant Glasgow Herald noted he spoke “rampant anti-papist froth and lies..” Between 1850 and 1851 he popped up in Boston, then New York, Bath in Maine, and Manchester in New Hampshire. In 1854 he was hustled off by police in Boston. Apart from the usual racial insults levelled at him, the Boston police report says he had more impudence than brains .. “…who with a three cornered hat and a cockade on his head, and old brass horn .. took advantage of the political excitement .. travelled around the city …tooting his horn … collecting crowds in the streets, delivering what he called his political lectures and passing around the hat for contributions…” Sounds like a modern political influencer, the bullhorn, the disinformation, the extreme rhetoric, not to mention his hat which is literally crowd sourcing. He was arrested at least 20 times for what was called his international harangues tour — where he'd shout confusing messages like “Scorn be those who rob us of our rights — purgatory for popery and the Pope — Freedom to man be he black or white — Rule Britannia…!!” Bizarrely, the resonances to today's crazy politics continued, Orr was associated with the fantastically named Know Nothing Party in America. Wait to hear about this bunch, you'll recognise bits of modern USA. Members of the movement were required to say "I know nothing" whenever they were asked about its specifics by outsiders, and that providing the group with its colloquial name. Before you wonder aloud what relevance all this has, let me quickly point out that the so-called Know Nothing Party had 43 representatives in Congress at the height of its power in the late 1850s. In 1855 this strange 19th Century character pitched up in British Guiana, and Sir Philip Wodehouse had his work cut out. Soon Orr was up to his old tricks, walking about with his bull horn, carrying a flag and a British imperial badge, followed by a group of …. Well .. followers. They were not repeating they Knew Nothing, but attacking the British establishment. We'll also hear about the Angel Gabriel riots. By 1862 Wodehouse who survived a public stoning in Guiana, had arrived in the Cape as Governor. Here he was to face the implacable enemies - the Westerners and the Easterners. Two parts of the Cape that did not get along.

Kelly Mielke and I decided to discuss this heartwarming and unforgettable episode while also doing a crossover with our other podcast, LandonNation! We break down this amazing episode and I hope you enjoy it! “Ingalls and his employer Mr. Hansen are anticipating a large income from a big job they have done. The Ingalls plan to pay their bill at the Mercantile store and more. Unfortunately, when Mr. Hansen learns that his client cannot pay, that means he cannot pay Mr. Ingalls and has to close his mill. With the bonus income lost, and the lack of regular income, the family has to think how they will pay their debts and keep up their other duties. Mr. Ingalls works for the livery owner, grooming and caring for the horses he owns. Once done there, he works for a local farmer to fix an irrigation system on his property. But, the women of the family want to help, too. Caroline and Laura plant a double crop of vegetables for the winter and plan to sell the eggs as they have been collecting. Mary plans to leave school temporarily to work for Mrs. Whipple, the seamstress, sewing assorted clothing items for ladies of the community. Laura continues in school, bringing home lessons to Mary so she doesn’t get behind on her schoolwork. When she herself gets behind on turning in her homework, she tells Miss Beadle she ran out of tablet paper and doesn’t want to ask her father to buy it. Miss Beadle offers a solution to the problem and all is much better.” The Richest Man in Walnut Grove originally aired on September 10, 1975 The opening song “Albert” is written and performed by the amazing Norwegian band, Project Brundlefly and is used with permission. This week Nick talks to George EnsorGeorge Ensor is the portfolio manager for the RGI UK Listed Smaller Companies Fund and the River UK Micro Cap Investment Trust. He joined River Global Investors in 2014 as a UK equity analyst, following his role as a private client investment manager at Smith & Williamson Investment Management. George holds a degree in Chemistry from the University of Bristol and is a CFA Charterholder. Nick and George discuss, his journey into investment management, starting with his chemistry degree and eventual move into equities, driven by the challenge of taking contrarian views in the market. He outlines his experience at Smith & Williamson, where he gained exposure to global multi-asset management, client service, and investment allocation. Transitioning to River Global (formerly River & Mercantile), he details the firm's evolution, including its listing and eventual return to a boutique-style setup. He explains the structural differences between open-ended small-cap funds and closed-ended micro-cap investment trusts, emphasising how micro-cap funds exploit liquidity premiums and offer high-conviction investments.George also discusses the challenges and opportunities within UK small-cap investing, noting cyclical market trends, liquidity constraints, and shifts in investor sentiment. He highlights how UK small caps have been underperforming large caps due to external factors like interest rates, economic cycles, and regulatory changes. He believes in the long-term growth potential of UK small caps, citing past market recoveries and potential reforms such as pension fund adjustments and British ISAs. The conversation further delves into investment strategies, including the balance between growth, quality, and recovery stocks, and explores specific holdings like Keystone Law, DF Capital, and Renold. He expresses concerns about undervaluation in the market, private equity takeovers, and the impact of passive investing on small-cap liquidity. Despite current challenges, he remains optimistic about the cyclical return of capital inflows into UK equities and the opportunities available for disciplined investors.George's book choices where: Thinking in Bets: Making Smarter Decisions When You Don't Have All the Facts - Annie Duke https://www.amazon.co.uk/Thinking-Bets-Annie-Duke/dp/0735216371/Quit: The Power of Knowing When to Walk Away - Annie Duke https://uk.bookshop.org/p/books/quit-the-power-of-knowing-when-to-walk-away-annie-duke/7098911George's music choice was: The Best by Tina Turnerhttps://open.spotify.com/track/4OeFQtRyT7vsLnRTv7t8YTThis content is issued by Zeus Capital Limited (“Zeus”) (Incorporated in England & Wales No. 4417845), which is authorised and regulated in the United Kingdom by the Financial Conduct Authority (“FCA”) for designated investment business, (Reg No. 224621) and is a member firm of the London Stock Exchange. The threat of tariffs on Canada's trade with the United States continues to be top of mind, with Alberta's Premier, Danielle Smith, recently returning from Mar-a-Lago after meeting with President-elect Donald Trump over the weekend. This week on the podcast, our guest is Marcus Rocque, Vice President at the ARC Energy Research Institute. Marcus joins Jackie and Peter in discussing the potential for Canadian oil and gas tariffs and the possible market implications. They review Canada's trade surplus with the United States, which is smaller than Donald Trump often claims, and whether the trade surplus is the only motivation for his threats to Canada. Next, they consider the amount of oil and natural gas Canada sends to the United States and the US's ability to substitute some of this consumption with alternative supply. Finally, they consider how the tariffs could impact US consumers and Canadian oil and gas producers.Content referenced in this podcast:Polymarket: “Will Trump impose 25% tariff on Mexico/Canada?” Please review our disclaimer at: https://www.arcenergyinstitute.com/disclaimer/ Check us out on social media: X (Twitter): @arcenergyinstLinkedIn: @ARC Energy Research Institute Subscribe to ARC Energy Ideas PodcastApple PodcastsAmazon MusicSpotify

This week on The Whiskey Trip, Big Chief hits The Texas Whiskey Trail and travels to Central Texas, visiting John Evans—Owner, Founder, and Distiller at Wilson Valley Mercantile, a true farm-to-glass distillery. Established in 1867, the Evans Ranch embraces a “seed-to-sip” philosophy, growing all its grains on-site. In 2022, John decided to transform his corn harvest into spirits, creating a new chapter for the family farm. The episode kicks off with their Texas Three Way Whiskey, crafted with a mash bill of 51% corn, 34% wheat, and 15% oats. This whiskey delivers a honey-butter sweetness that coats the palate, finishing with a touch of barrel spice. Next, they sample the Texas Notch Bourbon, which shares the same mash bill but uses a different yeast strain, reducing the sweetness while adding spice for a longer finish. In the second half, John introduces their Texas Bloody Butcher Corn Bourbon, featuring a rich, dusty nose and notes of popcorn ball and Cairo corn syrup that linger on the palate—a true nod to heritage corn whiskey. To wrap things up, they taste the Wilson Valley Rye, made with 51% rye, 34% corn, and 15% oats. This “bourbon drinker's rye” offers unique flavors of black licorice and root beer, making it the perfect whiskey for breakfast. It's always inspiring to see farmers returning to their roots, distilling their grains to create something extraordinary. Cheers to another unforgettable ride on The Whiskey Trip!
Diving back into their financial series and wrapping it up with a fourth and final part, Ashley and Dino are getting into their current chapter with The Fox Mercantile. Ash shares where her desire to create a gathering and community space came from, and then the two break down the challenges they've had to face while learning how to open and operate a retail space. They admit that while running The Merc has been one of the hardest things they've done with the least financial reward, it's been the most fulfilling spiritually. And while it may not make sense to some, they share why they'll continue to pour into it until God says otherwise.

Ever since we started dreaming up the Music City Series, we talked about how much we wanted to interview our friend, Holly Williams Coleman. She is a phenomenally talented artist in her own right as an acclaimed singer/songwriter. She is ALSO a retail entrepreneur and owner of White's Mercantile, with 5 locations.
