On this episode of Destination on the Left, Jacqui Sharpe, Executive Director at Three Lakes Area Chamber of Commerce shares a fascinating journey of transforming a small town's tourism landscape by tackling significant hurdles like the lodging shortage. She discusses the innovative steps they are taking to attract a hotel developer, address restrictive short-term rental ordinances, and harness community collaboration. What You Will Learn in This Episode: How Jacqui navigated through the unique challenge of having high tourist interest but limited lodging in Three Lakes Why Jacqui believes collaboration and partnerships are critical for addressing community challenges and fostering economic development How the community's history and natural resources have shaped Three Lakes as an attractive tourist destination Why the short-term rental ordinance and lack of hotels present a significant economic impact challenge, and what steps Jacqui is taking to address these What Jacqui has learned from collaborating with the Wisconsin Economic Development Association and others Navigating Tourism Challenges in Three Lakes, Wisconsin The challenges faced by Three Lakes, Wisconsin, underscore a common issue in the tourism industry: balancing development with maintaining a small-town charm. For Jacqui's community, attracting visitors isn't the problem; it's where to accommodate them. The community faces significant challenges due to lodging restrictions. Local ordinances require a minimum seven-day stay for short-term rentals, and a lack of hotel infrastructure following the loss of a downtown hotel in 2019 has resulted in a scarcity of lodging options. This means that visitors often stay elsewhere, taking their economic potential with them. This is why Jacqui and her team have been proactive in attracting new lodging developments. By emphasizing suitable lodging options in tourism-driven economies, they aim to inject a projected $13 million into the local economy over the next five years. Collaborative Initiatives Collaboration is at the heart of Jacqui's strategy to tackle lodging shortcomings. Her efforts with other DMOs to form a cohesive tourism department underscore a regional approach to development. Jacqui aims to fill the lodging void with developments that reflect community values and needs by aligning with economic development associations like the Wisconsin Economic Development Association (WEDC) and forming partnerships with hotel companies like Cobblestone. Establishing a new hotel, which is projected to open in 2026, is a major milestone. The project, supported by local banks and investors who require fewer incentives, will address the existing lodging gap while respecting and enhancing the small-town ethos vital to residents and returning visitors. The emphasis is reinvesting growth into the community through initiatives like community development funds. This ensures that economic benefits translate into tangible improvements for local residents, preserving the town's charm amid change. Mayo harpist Alannah Thornburgh talks about her debut album Shapeshifter, released February 12. She is inspired by the traditions of fairy folklore and mythology from rural Ireland. The project began when Alannah was commissioned to compose a piece for the Linenhall Arts Centre's New Music in Mayo series, curated by traditional musician Emer Mayock. With the support of the Arts Council's Next Generation Award, Alannah conducted interviews with nearly 50 historians, storytellers, and locals, collecting stories and experiences that inform her music. These conversations are woven throughout the album. We talk about all this, as well the Thornburgh family band and the influence of her saxophone-playing dad, the influence of the late Conor Walsh, and her various collaborations with the likes of Lemoncello and Varo. How do you sell a rare breed pig in a community who's never heard of it? This was a problem faced by today's podcast guest. Joanna Shepherd from Cobblestone Farm had moved from the UK on a mission to save the Berkshire pig breed! The problem: not many people in Saskatchewan, Canada knew what they were, or why they deserved her luxury-level price point. How do you market a product no one has heard of and create desire for it? Joanna has spent the last 5 years trying to figure it out. In today's episode, we'll hear some of the issues she has had to work through to help her find her way. Now she's guiding other Berkshire pork farmers and helping them learn how to market this rare breed of pig. You'll hear her rather simple strategy which is a mix of email marketing funnels, social media, and SEO that is slowly building an audience of super-fans who become repeat buyers. She's building a marketing machine "slow and steady" that will serve as a strong foundation as she scales her production. She and her husband Carl are a couple of Brits from the North Of England, and you'll definitely hear her fun accent! Joanna was raised in UK on mixed livestock farm, meaning beef, sheep, and pigs. She met her husband at an abattoir they both worked at and decided to move to Canada to see where the adventure would take them. They started out working in abattoirs and ended up buying acreage and raising registered Berkshire pigs. Joanna's mission is the save the rare Berkshire breed, selling her "genetics" to breeders, as well as weanlings and processed pork to local buyers. Her small herd of Berkshire pigs free ranges on 27 acres of pasture year round. She's committed to allowing her pigs live a stress-free life -- one that allows them to breathe fresh air, wallow, root, sunbathe and play. Blunt, bold, a risk taker, she says what she thinks and goes after what she wants. Names are great. They let people know what to call things. You can read them, write them, put them on a list. If you know someone's name you can send them things, invite them places, say it quietly, in wonder or fear. A name can stick in your mouth like butter or blood. You can make one up, get a new name, do whatever you want. No downsides.
