2025 was the year Spain stood out in Europe over its clear opposition to the Israeli genocide in Gaza, as well as over its critical stance towards the Trump-led military spending spree in NATO. With the fall of the Social Democrats in Germany, the country's prime minister Pedro Sanchez also reinforced his position within the EU as the major figurehead of the continent's centre-left. Yet, at home Sanchez has faced a series of crises and scandals within his own Socialist Workers Party while his complicated parliamentary majority hung by a thread while far-right Vox surged in the polls. To discuss the year's events, Alan and Eoghan are joined by regular end of year guest IE university professor and Galician beach bar owner Joe Haslam. Our Shauna headed off to meet a selection of students from Junior Infants, Senior Infants, first and second class at Saint Conleth's Infant school in Newbridge for a Christmas special of Shauna's School Run. She spoke to Fionn, Olivia, Iris, Duje, Elise, Theo, Charlotte, Billy, Jacob, Mason, Penny, Daisy May, Ethan, Eoghan, Adah, Eoghan, Sophia, Emily, Oliver, Archie, Hudson, Erin, Cian, and Maeve.Well, obviously, Santa is flat out over the next few weeks, but Shauna asked the children what he'll do in January, when it's all over. And she also asked them a slightly controversial question: does his sleigh need to be retired? Maybe Santa needs to look at a more high-tech mode of transport! Click now to find out what they had to say. Thanks to Principal Anne-Marie O'Connor, and a special thank you to the lovely Jackie Fenlon, who organised the visit.

We're joined again today by Eoghan Gilmartin to continue our discussion about the government of Pedro Sanchez in Spain. Eoghan is an Irish journalist based in Madrid, a regular contributor to Jacobin, and co-host of the Sobremesa podcast about Spanish politics. In contrast with Greece and Portugal, Spain still has a government today headed by the center left. The Spanish Socialist leader Pedro Sanchez has attracted a lot of interest from the international media for appearing to buck the trend as many European countries shift to the right. He's been unusually outspoken on the subject of Gaza. And Sanchez was the only European leader to directly challenge Donald Trump over his demand for a big increase in military spending. Sanchez feels confident that he will lead the Socialist Party in the next general election, but his government is facing a number of challenges, including a corruption scandal that implicated some of his political allies. Today, we're going back to the early stages of the Sanchez government, before asking whether it has a future in the years to come. Long Reads continues our recent focus on the politics of southern European countries over the last decade. This week and in our next episode, we're looking in detail at what's been happening in Spain. Sanchez may be gaining admirers as well as enemies on the international stage. But his position at home is quite precarious. His governing coalition with the left-wing party Sumar doesn't have a majority in parliament. And some of his political allies have been accused of corruption. Over the next two episodes, Long Reads will concentrate on how Sanchez came to power, what his record in office has been, and whether his government is likely to endure. Eoghan McCabe is the Co-founder and CEO of Intercom, building Fin.ai, the AI customer service company. This was an extremely candid, two hour conversation going inside every detail of how Intercom was the first late stage software company to successfully re-architect itself to be AI-native.Intercom just announced they've built their own customer service-focused AI models, and Eoghan explains why most software companies will have to do the same.We also talk through the lessons he learned coming back to run Intercom in 2022 after stepping back in 2020, why many AI companies have strong negative gross margins despite the narrative, how Intercom designed AI's first outcome-based pricing model, the challenges of buying AI software today, the importance of brand when building new products, and we get in the wayback machine, talking through the pain raising Intercom's initial million dollar Seed round, and how venture capital has changed since then.Thank you to Eoghan's Co-founder Des Traynor for helping me brainstorm topics for the conversation.Special thanks to Ramp for supporting this episode. Eoghan McCabe is the founder and CEO of Intercom, a customer service platform that has successfully pivoted to become an AI-first company with its agent product, Fin. After stepping away from the CEO role in 2020 due to health issues, Eoghan returned to find the company's growth had stalled. Just one month after his return, ChatGPT launched, and within six weeks, Intercom had a working prototype of what would become Fin. In this conversation, Eoghan shares the brutal reality of transforming a late-stage SaaS business valued at multiple billions into an AI-first company that's now growing faster than most public software companies. We discuss:1. Why Eoghan believes most late-stage companies won't survive the AI transition2. The “founder mode” transformation that required firing 40% of staff and resulted in 98% employee satisfaction3. Why having “nothing to lose” is the ultimate advantage in AI transformation (and why comfortable companies will fail)4. How Intercom transformed from a plateauing SaaS business to an AI-first company growing at 300%+5. How Intercom's pricing evolved from “the most hated in SaaS” to a model that charges just $0.99 per resolved ticket6. The cultural transformation required to compete with AI-native startups7.
