Lakshmi Ramgopal is a musician and dancer who performs under the name Lykanthea. Her electro-mythic debut EP, Migration, received much-deserved praise from such outlets as The Chicago Tribune, Noisey, and Public Radio International's The World (and listeners will recognize its track “Hand and Eye” as The Witch Wave theme song). She's collaborated with Savage Sister on their sundrowned EP, and she's been creating and performing music via sound installations and performances for spaces such as The Chicago Museum of Contemporary Art and Chicago's Lincoln Park Conservatory. Her new project, Some Viscera, marks a shift in instrumentation, drawing more heavily on her training in South Indian classical (or Carnatic) music, as well as organic sounds from analog instruments, bird song, and lullabies. It touches on atavistic questions of motherhood and personal legacy. When performed live it is an evening-length work of sound and movement that explores childhood, nostalgia, and kinship in the Indian-American diaspora in the wake of India's independence, while questioning the boundaries of classical forms. Embracing the warmth of the sruti box, unprocessed vocals, and strings, Ramgopal's ensemble draws on a wide range of influences to create a work that is as expansive as it is intimate. Some Viscera premiered at the Museum of Contemporary Art Chicago on September 26-27, 2024, and the music of Some Viscera is now available in a standalone album. In addition to that, performing both solo and with her ensemble, Lakshmi has done site-specific, immersive shows in spaces like Chicago's Edgar Miller's Glasner Studio and Garfield Park Conservatory, and in the middle of a freshwater stream. In 2018 she showed A Half-Light Chorus, which a sound installation commissioned by Experimental Sound Studio, and In 2020 she and visual artist Nancy Davidson showed a site-specific sculpture and sound installation, at Krannert Art Museum. The museum acquired it in 2023. Lakshmi received her PhD in Classics from the University of Chicago, and she is currently Assistant Professor of History at Columbia University, with a focus on the Roman Empire. On this episode, Lakshmi discusses her sonic shift from electronic to analog, music as ancestral offering, and the reincarnating power of love.Pam also talks about the secret magic of lullabies, and responds to a listener's comment about reconciling witchcraft with one's religious upbringing.Songs featured in the episode are all from Lykanthea's new album, Some Viscera:“Bird Song”“Garuda”“The Nightingale”“Cremation”Our sponsors for this episode are Ritual + Shelter, TU·ET·AL, UBU Skills, BetterHelp, Black Phoenix Alchemy Lab, Grimsby Hollow Meadery, and Open Sea Design Co.We also have print-on-demand merch like Witch Wave shirts, sweatshirts, totes, stickers, and mugs available now here, and all sorts of other bewitching goodies available in the Witch Wave shop. And if you want more Witch Wave, please consider supporting us on Patreon to get access to detailed show notes, bonus Witch Wave Plus episodes, Pam's monthly online rituals, and more!

HardLore is joined this week for an unbelievable and unfiltered conversation with Parris Mayhew, currently of AGGROS, but formerly the co-founder/original co-writer of legendary New York Hardcore band, the CRO-MAGS. The Cro-Mags are inarguably one of the most influential and important hardcore bands of all time, and the sheer insanity and legend of the internal twists and turns within the band itself is the only thing that rivals the magnitude of their contributions to hardcore music. 10 years after his iconic interview with Rod Glacial that first appeared on Noisey (after he thought it was only supposed to be in a French magazine), we go over some key details from the interview and from the story of Parris' time in the Cro-Mags for some of the most riveting and controversial stories ever told on HardLore, and he shares all the facts about his new band Aggros. Matt Sweeney downplays his success as a guitarist and producer to the fact that he simply says "yes" to a lot of projects. Whatever the case; it's working. After playing in Chavez, he performed as Superwolves with Will Oldham and served as a guitarist-for-hire on numerous acclaimed albums, including Cat Power's 'Covers' record and the Rick Rubin-produced Johnny Cash 'American Recordings V' and 'VI.' Matt is also one of the greatest guitar interviewers around. His Guitar Moves series, originally produced for Vice's Noisey channel in 2013, set a high bar for how to interview musicians. Like the late Anthony Bourdain, Matt is total rock & roll, but also approachable, funny and curious. Most importantly, he gets his subjects - including Keith Richards, Blake Mills, and Billy Gibbons - talking. After a long hiatus, Matt has decided to take ownership of Guitar Moves, share old installments, and record new episodes. This Florida rapper, singer, and producer shares real American stories that don't make the news—from candlelit section 8 life without power to hustling pills and breaking and entering just to pay the bills. Spinning this narrative through a combination of airtight rhymes and woozy melodies, he immediately captivates. “Some areas are hood, and others are country,” he explains. “There are a lot of meth heads and a lot of trailer trash type shit. It gives me stuff to rap about though. I've really got a message. Sometimes, I turn up on some shit—but I'm getting intimate and telling my story for the most part.” His 2017 project Castles in the Air ignited a buzz from the underground on up. “Xanfran” introduced his signature style, while “16” [feat. YoungBoy Never Broke Again] transformed into a viral hit. As he generated over 6 million cumulative streams in a few months' time, the “16” video quickly crossed the 2.4-million-mark on YouTube. Noisey, Revolt TV, Respect, and more offered early support. “Castles in the Air made sense,” he goes on. “I gave it that title, because I'm chasing my dreams. At the same time, I'm always working. I feel like it's not even anywhere close to what I'm going to do.” --- Send in a voice message: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/nalasden88/message

I talked to Dan Ozzi, author of the book Sellout, about his recent Fader piece about The Armed—a band/collective/cult from Detroit. We jump from there into early 2010s music writing, hearing new music as you get old, editing Noisey in the early 2010s, getting nostalgic about Chumped, media now vs. media then, when the label or publisher asks you to do corny stuff, selling out, "lying Lydia Tár" ...and then we close out by reacting to Barack Obama's summer playlist, which dropped right before we recorded. patreon.com/afterthedeluge -- https://twitter.com/routinelayup https://twitter.com/danozzi -- https://danozzi.bigcartel.com/ https://www.thefader.com/2023/06/27/cover-story-the-armed-perfect-saviors-interview-profile-2023 --- Send in a voice message: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/afterthedeluge/message Support this podcast: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/afterthedeluge/support

Writer Adam Jackson (Vice, Noisey) returns to the podcast for a discussion of the new Disney/Pixar animated feature Lightyear. Why did Lightyear fail at the box office? Was it the convoluted premise (this isn't a movie about the toy Buzz Lightyear or even a Toy Story film, this is the movie about the actual Buzz Lightyear that young Andy loved so much in 1995 that he bought the toy)? Was it the “controversial” LGBTQ content (which adds up to about 45 seconds of screen time and yet triggered hysterical calls for boycotts of the movie from the anti-Disney religious right)? Was it anger over the replacement of the conservative Tim Allen with the affable Chris Evans as the voice of Buzz? Was it stiff market competition from Jurassic World Dominion and Top Gun: Maverick? Adam and I went to see it together to see for ourselves where things went wrong. This is a talk that's been in the making for quite a while and the amount of joy I have in getting to share this with you is insurmountable. Sampa The Great is a singer-songwriter, poet, and rapper from Zambia and Botswana who's fiercely unapologetic about what she stands for. A major touchstone of her values is an unwavering love for family, friendship, and culture, but another key focus is a steadfast acceptance of who she is and where she's going. For years now she's been praised by outlets like NPR, The Fader, Noisey, NME, Complex, and at this point pretty much the whole fucking world agrees: Sampa the Great is an unbelievable talent. And yet, it still feels like things are only getting started for Sampa, which is what we delve into within today's podcast. We chat about her return to Africa after years in Australia, the differences between creating music about your home vs. while you're actually there, her now-legendary performance of Final Form at the ARIAS (aka the Australian equivalent of the Grammy's), and so much more.

This episode of Across The Margin: The Podcast presents an interview with the author of Fight Like Hell : The Untold History of American Labor, Kim Kelly. Kelly is an independent journalist, author, and organizer. She has been a regular labor columnist for Teen Vogue since 2018, and her writing on labor, class, politics, and culture has appeared in The New Republic, The Washington Post, The New York Times, The Baffler, The Nation, The Columbia Journalism Review, and Esquire, among many others. Kelly has also worked as a video correspondent for More Perfect Union, The Real News Network, and Means TV. Previously, she was the heavy metal editor at “Noisey,” VICE's music vertical, and was an original member of the VICE Union. A third-generation union member, she is a member of the Industrial Workers of the World's Freelance Journalists Union as well as a member and elected councilperson for the Writers Guild of America, East (WGAE). Kelly's profoundly researched book shares the stories of working-class heroes who propelled American labor's relentless push for fairness and equal protection under the law. Those champions of American labor include freed Black women organizing for protection in the Reconstruction-era South, Jewish immigrant garment workers braving deadly conditions for a sliver of independence, Asian American fieldworkers rejecting government-sanctioned indentured servitude across the Pacific, Incarcerated workers advocating for basic human rights and fair wages, and the queer Black labor leader who helped orchestrate America's civil rights movement. Throughout Fight Like Hell, Kelly excavates these untold histories and shows how the rights the American worker possess today — the forty-hour workweek, workplace-safety standards, restrictions on child labor, protection from harassment and discrimination on the job — were earned with literal blood, sweat, and tears. Fight Like Hell comes at a time of economic reckoning in America. From Amazon's warehouses to Starbucks cafes, Appalachian coal mines to the sex workers of Portland's Stripper Strike, interest in organized labor is at a fever pitch not seen since the early 1960s. Inspirational, intersectional, and full of crucial lessons from the past, Fight Like Hell shows what is possible when the working class demands the dignity it has always deserved. In this episode host Michael Shields and Kim Kelly talk about how a heavy metal writer and editor became a tireless advocate for the working class. They touch on a bevy of the stories told in Fight Like Hell, from early 1800's washwoman and garment workers to the prison labor unions of today. They converse about how Covid-19 affected the worker's right movement, the Amazon Union battles, and so much more. See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.

We discuss 5 of his performances: his debut, the influential hip hop classic Belly (1998), his trilogy of dumb studio action films by the overqualified cinematographer turned director Andrzej Bartkowiak - Romeo Must Die (2000), Exit Wounds (2001) and Cradle 2 The Grave (2003), and his most ambitious film, Ernest Dickerson's misunderstood crime drama Never Die Alone (2004). DMX discovered the source material by the Black pulp fiction novelist Donald Goines when he was in prison and used his clout in Hollywood to get it made as a movie: a disturbing and often grimly effective potboiler about how a sociopath's mind operates. We also discuss our shared neighbourhood of Bloordale: a magical land of bodegas, ice cream shops and numerous weed dispensaries. This week's missive, our ninth, is the last you'll be hearing from us before Election Day 2020. And because it's pretty hard to think about anything other than the brain-melting insanity of American political discourse right now, we thought we'd bring on one of our favorite culture writers—someone who also happens to be an intrepid labor reporter and newsroom union organizer—to discuss just that. Philly-based freelance writer Kim Kelly is a columnist at Teen Vogue, the former metal editor at Noisey, and the author of Fight Like Hell, a forthcoming book on the history of the American labor movement. She's also one the few journalists we know who identifies openly as an anarchist and anti-fascist. This makes her the perfect person to help us wrap our mind around how those fringe utopian movements, or some misguided, fact-agnostic conception of them, ended up in the crosshairs of the American culture war this year—“terrorist” designations, “anarchist jurisdictions” and all. We spoke to Kim about some of the basic facts that the Trump administration and the mainstream media alike are getting wrong about these movements and their activities, the challenges of being a journalist as well as an activist, and why objectivity in journalism is a false construct in the first place. She also opened up to us about the book she's writing—and why she believes that every story is a labor story.Follow Kim on TwitterRead more by Kim“We Must Sever Law Enforcement from the Labor Movement” (The Nation)“After Eddie Van Halen's Death, Heavy Metal Must Confront Its Mortality” (GQ)“Care for a Cup of Satanic Camomile?” (The New York Times)Fight Like Hell, Kim's forthcoming history of the labor movement, is out in Fall 2022 via One Signal.
