Larry Kudlow and John Carney argue that a robust manufacturing revival is the primary driver of the current American economic boom. They contend that the traditional focus on consumer spending is misguided, asserting instead that business profits and productivity are the true "lifeblood" that create jobs and fuel wage growth for blue-collar workers. The discussion emphasizes that supply-side policies, such as tax reductions on overtime and regulatory easing, have incentivized increased labor and output, particularly within the durable goods sector. Furthermore, the speakers frame reciprocity in trade and the strategic use of tariffs as essential tools for national security, ensuring the United States is no longer dependent on adversaries for critical materials. A former rock star (?) who now fronts a wedding band spends an evening jamming with a former boy band member, only to find later on that said boy band member steals his song and turns it into a hit. Ashley & Matt review the new movie Power Ballad in this episode.
With movies like “Once,” “Begin Again” and “Sing Street,” Irish filmmaker John Carney has found a way to make movie musicals relevant for contemporary audiences. His latest effort is "Power Ballad." Kansas City's Paul Rudd stars alongside Nick Jonas in the story of a struggling wedding singer who bonds with a pop star. When the former boy band member steals a song from his friend, things get dicey. Rudd is as good as he's been in years, and Jonas is solid in a role tailor made for him. “Power Ballad” is a rousing crowd-pleaser that's filled with catchy music. If you are familiar with the phrase, "By the power of Grayskull," then the clunky action fantasy "Masters of the Universe" might be nostalgic for you...but that's really all it's got going for it. In this update of the 80s adventure cartoons based on the line of Mattel toys, Nicholas Galitzine plays an annoyingly uncertain He-Man, Jered Leto provides the petulant voice of Skeletor and Idris Elba is wasted as a washed-up warrior. The movie's tongue-in-cheek approach never works. “Masters of the Universe” lacks the power. The Wayans Brothers are back with yet another ultra raunchy horror movie parody. Despite its title, "Scary Movie" is actually “Scary Movie 6,” the latest installment in the franchise that started 26 years ago. It reunites many of the movies' familiar cast members including Marlon and Shawn Wayans and a few dozen other Wayans, Regina Hall and Anna Faris. Sadly, the Wayans have officially run out of ideas for “Scary Movie” and try to fill the gap with repetitive and aggressively offensive material. Now that's scary.
In the wonderful new film Power Ballad, Paul Rudd and Nick Jonas play two musicians whose careers haven't exactly gone to plan – but one song may change that. Rick (Rudd) is a wedding band singer in Ireland and Danny (Jonas) is a former boy band member. They collaborate on a song that Rick wrote a few years ago, but Rick later finds out that Danny is trying to pass off the song as his own. Power Ballad was directed by John Carney, who also made Sing Street and Once. James Cameron-Wilson is rather mystified by the success of #1 Backrooms, with Chewitel Ejiofor. A horror film based on a web series, it baffled James, unaware of its precedents but people are loving it. James was much more taken with #9 Power Ballad with Paul Rudd. Written and directed by John Carney, it's even better than his earlier films such as Once and Sing Street. Peopled with interesting characters and with witty dialogue and great music, it reduced James to tears. Ladies First, on Netflix, is an English-language version of their first French-language film. Starring Sacha Baron Cohen and Rosamund Pike, it's about a womanising liar who wakes up in a parallel universe which is a matriarchy. With echoes of Mel Gibson's What Women Want, it's witty and well acted but is more farcical fantasy than satire. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit podcastchoices.com/adchoices

Things get awkward on this week's Empire Podcast, folks. Not just because Chris Hewitt seems to be wearing a Skeletor mask for some of it, nor because he's so heat-addled that he forgets to introduce James Dyer properly. No, things get awkward because the team – Chris, James, Helen O'Hara, and Ben Travis – discuss whether it ever gets awkward for them when visiting film sets. Then, our intrepid quartet also discuss the week's movie news, including the shocking news of Paddington 4's potty-mouthed writers, and review Daniel Roher's Tuner, John Carney's Power Ballad, Kane Parsons' Backrooms, and Kristin Scott Thomas' directorial debut, My Mother's Wedding. Oh, and Chris sits down for a lovely chat with Leo Woodall, star of the excellent Tuner, and discovers that Woodall has some hidden talents. Enjoy!

"Power Ballad" is a 2026 musical comedy-drama film directed and co-written by John Carney, starring Paul Rudd, Nick Jonas, Havana Rose Liu, and Jack Reynor. The film tells the story of Rick Power (Rudd), a wedding singer, who meets washed-up former boy band singer Danny Wilson (Jonas) at a wedding one night and bonds over a jam session. After the jam session, Danny steals one of Rick's songs, and it becomes a number-one hit. This brings Danny back into the spotlight, leading Rick to seek revenge and recognition. The film had its world premiere at the Dublin International Film Festival and has received positive reviews for its two performances, Carney's direction, and, of course, the music. Carney was kind enough to spend some time talking with us about his work and experience making the film, which you can listen to below. This episode delves into the illustrious legacy of the Notre Dame Fighting Irish, underscoring three remarkable narratives that exemplify the enduring spirit and historical significance of this esteemed college football program. We commence with the story of John Philip "Clipper" Smith, a diminutive yet formidable player who, under the guidance of the legendary Knute Rockne, became a pivotal force during the 1925-1927 seasons, eventually earning a place in the College Football Hall of Fame. Next, we explore the inspiring journey of John Carney, a walk-on who transcended expectations to become Notre Dame's all-time leader in field goals before embarking on a storied 23-year career in the NFL, marked by a Super Bowl championship and remarkable scoring achievements. Finally, we reflect on Knute Rockne's early professional endeavors, revealing his significant contributions to the evolution of the game and the genesis of the modern NFL. Through these narratives, we illuminate the profound impact of these individuals on both Notre Dame and the broader landscape of American football.Don't forget to check out and subscribe to the Pigskin Dispatch YouTube channel for additional content and the regular Football History Minute Shorts.Miss our football by the day of the year podcasts, well, don't, because they can still be found at the Pigskin Dispatch website. The discussion initiates with an exploration of the significant legacy and prominence associated with the Notre Dame Fighting Irish, a revered college football team. The podcast delves into three distinct stories that exemplify the richness of Notre Dame's football history, each centered around legendary figures who played pivotal roles in shaping the team's identity. We commence with John Philip 'Clipper' Smith, a diminutive yet tenacious player who, despite his size, made an indelible impact on the field during the 1925 season under the coaching guidance of Knute Rockne. Smith's remarkable agility and technical skill earned him the respect of his peers and a place in the College Football Hall of Fame, demonstrating that greatness can manifest in various forms, irrespective of physical stature. Transitioning through time, we uncover the narrative of John Carney, a walk-on kicker who ascended to prominence during the 1980s. Carney's journey from an unheralded athlete to Notre Dame's all-time leading scorer encapsulates the essence of perseverance and determination. His collegiate career culminated in a dramatic game-winning field goal against USC, a moment that not only solidified his status as a key player but also served as a catalyst for his successful transition into a 23-year NFL career. Carney's legacy extends beyond mere statistics; he symbolizes the potential for triumph against adversity, resonating with aspiring athletes and fans alike. Finally, we reflect on the early days of Knute Rockne, a figure whose influence transcended college football, as he navigated the tumultuous landscape of professional football in the 1910s. Before Rockne became a legendary coach at Notre Dame, he participated in the Ohio League, where he honed his skills as a player and coach. This period not only contributed to his development but also laid the groundwork for the evolution of modern football strategies, particularly the forward pass. Rockne's dual role as a college coach and advisor to professional teams illustrates the blurred lines between amateur and professional football during that era. Through these narratives, we gain insight into the multifaceted nature of Notre Dame's football legacy, celebrating both its storied past and the enduring spirit of its players.
