Our sleepy episode tonight contains stories from Celtic Mythology, taken from the rich body of Irish myths. I tell you about the expansion, decline, and revival of ancient Celtic culture, which left its most important marks in the Northwest of Europe, especially in Scotland, Ireland, Wales, Cornwall, the Isle of Man, and Brittany. We will relive colorful stories from the Ulster Cycle: Deirdre and Naoise, the epic of Cú Chulainn including the Cattle Raid of Cooley (Táin Bó Cúailnge), and the appearance of the Morrigan. I will tell you about what we know of some Celtic deities: the Matres, Cernunnos, Taranis, Lugh, Epona... Welcome to Lights Out Library Join me for a sleepy adventure tonight. This special episode was recorded live at the Miu Miu Literary Club, which took place on 9th-10th April 2025 in Milan. Under the direction of Mrs Miuccia Prada, and now in its second iteration, the Literary Club is the latest in a series of cultural experiences devised by Miu Miu to promote the arts. - Naoise Dolan is an Irish author whose first book, ‘Exciting Times', was published to widespread acclaim in 2020. Naoise followed this with the equally well-received ‘The Happy Couple' in 2023. In both books, Naoise tackles the confusion of contemporary life with precision and wit: her characters grapple with sexuality, housing instability, social media malaise, and our growing class disparities. At the same time, Naoise brings a fresh, often unpredictable perspective to the timeless topics of education, girlhood, and desire that inform this year's Literary Club curation. - Deep Reading Lists can be found at phoebe.substack.com - @phoebelovatt @phoebelovattpubliclibrary @naoisedolan @miumiu

Nuacht Mhall. Príomhscéalta na seachtaine, léite go mall. * Inniu an t-aonú lá is fiche de mhí na Nollag. Is mise Oisín Mac Conamhna. In Éirinn, tá an idirbheartaíocht idir Fianna Fáil, Fine Gael agus an Grúpa Réigiúnach Neamhspleách chun rialtas nua a bhunú fós ar siúl. Toghadh Verona Murphy ina Ceann Comhairle Dé Céadaoin, an chéad bhean tofa san oifig údaí i stair an stáit. Is Teachta Dála neamhspléach ó Loch Garman í, agus dúirt sí gur mór an onóir di an ról a ghlacadh. Gheall sí go mbeidh sí cothrom agus stuama, agus gheall sí freisin a cuid Gaeilge a fheabhsú go leibhéal i gcomhréir leis an ról. Dé Máirt, fógraíodh go mbeidh an calafort Holyhead ar Inis Món dúnta go dtí an cúigiú lá déag de mhí Eanáir, ar a laghad, mar gheall ar an dochar a rinne Stoirm Darragh ann. Cuirfidh an dúnadh isteach go mór ar dhaoine ag taisteal abhaile don Nollaig, agus ar an bpost idir Éire agus an Bhreatain. Dúirt urlabhraí ó Chomhlachas Tarlú Bóthair na hÉireann gur géarchéim atá ann, go mbeidh tionchar ollmhór ag an dúnadh ar an tionscal, agus go bhfuil baill dá gcuid ag cailleadh trí chéad míle euro gach seachtain mar gheall air. De ghnáth, téann 60% d'earraí a thagann isteach in Éirinn trí chalafort Holyhead. Tá an rialtas i gcomhoibriú le rialtas na Breataine Bige chun an tionchar a laghdú, agus an trácht a chur ar mhalairt slí trí Fishguard, Learpholl, nó Càrn Rìoghain in Albain. D'éag Gearóid Ó Cairealláin, laoch na Gaeilge i mBéal Feirste agus iar-Uachtarán Chonradh na Gaeilge, Dé hAoine. Tá clú agus cáil bainte amach ag a mhac Naoise, nó Móglaí Bap mar is fearr aithne air, sa bhanna ceoil Kneecap. Suaimhneas síoraí ar a anam uasal Gaelach. Agallamh leis an dTeachta Dála nuathofa do Chill Dara Thuaidh, Naoise Ó Cearúil. Cén tuairim atá aige faoi rialtas nua? An ceart d'Fhianna Fáil labhairt le Sinn Féin?
In Kneecap, Rich Peppiatt delivers a raw and politically charged origin story about JJ, a Belfast teacher, and two self-proclaimed "low-life scum," Naoise and Liam, who form the first Irish-speaking hip-hop group. The film is a powerful act of cultural resistance, celebrating the revitalization of the Irish language through music. Peppiatt discusses with our host Elliot the film's roots in Belfast's rich, turbulent history and the creative process that unfolded over many drinks with the Kneecap group. This conversation explores the film's personal and political layers, focusing on the vital importance of storytelling in preserving language and identity. On the latest episode of The CineSkinny, we take a look at the blistering Kneecap, an irresistible piece of myth-making from the firebrand Belfast rap trio of the same name. The film follows best friends, drug dealers and wannabe rappers Liam and Naoise (also known as Mo Chara and Móglaí Bap) as they avoid the Belfast ‘peelers' and a group of ex-paramilitaries out to get them before teaming up with local music teacher JJ, who helps hone their sound as their producer, DJ Próvai. The film's got wildly inventive visuals, a razor-sharp political message and enough drug-fulled energy to power the sun. Elsewhere on the show, we hear about Alien: Romulus, the 79th film in the Alien franchise (at least it feels like it), which helped kick off this year's Edinburgh Film Festival. And inspired by the rebellious antics of Kneecap, we discuss our favourite rebels in cinema, from Nae Pasaran to the hot fox in Disney's Robin Hood. TIMESTAMPS: What we've been watching: Longlegs and lots of Fringe shows (1:57) Alien: Romulus review (12:00) Kneecap review (19:41) Our favourite rebellions in film: Nae Pasaran, School of Rock, A Fistful of Dynamite, Robin Hood and Andor (45:55) Recorded at EHFM's Ground Floor HQ in Leith. In this Film Ireland podcast, Gemma Creagh talks to Trevor Birney, Producer of 'Kneecap'. When fate brings Belfast schoolteacher JJ into the orbit of self-confessed ‘low life scum' Naoise & Liam Og, the needle drops on a hip hop act like no other. Rapping in their native Irish language, Kneecap fast become the unlikely figureheads of a Civil Rights movement to save their mother tongue. But the trio must first overcome police, paramilitaries & politicians trying to silence their defiant sound - whilst their anarchic approach to life often makes them their own worst enemies. In this fiercely original sex, drugs and hip-hop biopic Kneecap play themselves, laying down a global rallying cry for the defense of native cultures. In cinemas from 9th August 2024. https://filmireland.net/

This Sunday will mark the fifth anniversary of the death of Micheál ‘Mick' Ryan. The Lahinch native was killed when the Boeing 737 Max Aircraft he was travelling on from Addis Ababa to Nairobi on the 10th of March, 2019 crashed minutes after take-off, killing all 157 people on board. ‘Mick's' widow, Naoise Ryan has continued to fight for justice for her late husband. That fight for justice has been frustrated by the 2021 deferred-prosecution agreement the US Government made with Boeing over that crash and the Lion Air plane which crashed shortly after takeoff in Indonesia on October 29th, 2018, resulting in the death of all 189 passengers and crew. However, the incident involving the Boeing 737 Max 9 Alaska Airlines jet in early January, in which a door plug blew out mid-air, has potentially changed matters. To discuss this further, Alan Morrissey spoke with Naoise Ryan.

Dublin-based artist Naoise Roo released her second album Emotionally Magnificent on October 27 and brings the curtain down on the project with 'The Last Headline Show Ever Probably' at the Workman's Club on Friday, February 2, featuring special guests Paddy Hanna and Clara Tracey and support from Danny Carroll. On this episode, Naoise talks about some of the reasons why the project is coming to an end and we talk through Emotionally Magnificent track by track. Buy the album: https://naoiseroo.bandcamp.com/merch/emotionally-magnificent-vinyl-special-edition Sign up to the TPOE newsletter (free): https://tpoe.substack.com/ --- Naoise Roo's Instagram message about 'The Last Headline Show Ever Probably': Years ago, I remember seeing an update on Simple Kid's website that included a picture of him and the words "Simple Kid is working out what he wants to do with the rest of his life" or some similar sentiment. I've thought about that a lot over the years. I think its time to explore some other things. There is never a time that seems easy to stop; it always feels like sustainable creative success is just around the corner, that you are waiting on a bus to speed you towards a new destination. However, those of us who have been in this game a long time are often faced with the realisation that the destination doesn't really exist — or when it does, no one knows how long it will last. I think I'd like to switch gears and take a paddleboat somewhere, nowhere in particular. I don't really care about success in the traditional sense. I do, however, care about peace, and trying to be the best version of my creative self. Over the last few years, I have realised that the aspects of this work I value the most involve being in the studio, being with people I love and trust, and making something magic. I am far more suited to this cocoon, rather than the emerging butterfly stage of this vocation. Experiencing major losses last year reminded me how emotionally exhausting this industry can be. Being solo is lonely, even though it obviously takes a village to make things happen and I've been privileged to have support across many things. I could conceivably have a hiatus and not make such a boundary, but truthfully I think I want to create space in my life for other things, ideas, projects and also just to be. I've loved making this music and playing this music. I am so intensely grateful that people have written about my music, shared it with other people or have supported me by coming to the shows and buying records and merch. I am also endlessly grateful to all the people I made music with. It would mean a lot if yall would come on Feb 2nd and we see this thing out in style in Workmans. --- From the press release: Released via North Carolina label Schoolkids Records, Emotionally Magnificent is offered as the culmination of a chapter of a journey that takes in both Lilith and Naoise Roo's 2020 Sick Girlfriend EP, whose four tracks are incorporated here. Combined, it honours the full, sprawling majesty of Naoise Roo as a singular artist. Rather than some throwaway snapshot, released as a mere means to an end, Emotionally Magnificent is a slow focus triumph of reflection and resolve. “The Sick Girlfriend EP had a lot to do with my mental health and how I felt about navigating the music industry,” says Naoise Roo. “‘Falling Stars,' for example, is about watching all these talented people around me hitting the wall and leaving music because it's just too hard to keep going. ‘Sick Girlfriend' itself is basically about the trope of the manic pixie dream girl and how that's exploited, sexualized or slandered.”

This week's guest is author Naoise Dolan. I am absolutely thrilled to have Naoise on this season – she's widely consider of the millennial generation's most talented writers, ever since her Sunday Times bestseller debut novel Exciting Times was published in 2020. It's currently being adapted into an Amazon Studios TV production starring Phoebe Dynevor. We're here to discuss her hotly anticipated follow up book, The Happy Couple, which is a sort of anti-rom counting down to the wedding of a boy and girl who probably shouldn't get married. During this recording, we chat about Naoise's experiences of being an expat in Berlin – where she's lived less than a year. Fans of Naoise, who is originally from Dublin, will know that she is no stranger to the experience of living abroad – her first book, Exciting Times, was heavily inspired by her own expat experience living in Hong Kong, while she's also lived in Singapore and Italy. From an alone time perspective, this is an interesting position to be in – and Naoise describes how this sense of being a foreigner has enabled some of the incredibly perceptive social observation in her writing. We also discuss Naoise's autism diagnosis, and how it might or might not reflect itself in her writing – plus, whether framing writing as ‘neurodivergent' is useful in the first place. I found Naoise incredibly thoughtful and intelligent – she has a dark sense of humour, which I really appreciate, and she has one of the best laughs I've ever heard on this podcast. I hope you enjoy this conversation as much as I did. We discuss, among other things:Naoise's decision to relocate to Berlin [4:56]Navigating cultural differences as an autistic person [9:01]Why Naoise structured her book around a wedding narrative [19:25]Main character syndrome, in relation to Naoise's protagonist Celine [24:08]Naoise's characters' self-sabotaging tendencies (in The Happy Couple & Exciting Times) [30:26]How Naoise's neurodiverse perspective influences her writing [34:23]Naoise's love of drawing in her alone time [38:30]You can purchase Naoise's book, The Happy Couple, now online and in bookstores.Subscribe to my weekly email newsletter at francescaspecter.substack.com to follow my personal writing plus podcast bonus content. According to Edison Research, there are more podcast listeners than ever, with 64% of the US 12+ population having ever listened to a podcast. With over half a million active podcasts available, more time is being devoted to mental health discussions. However, little is known about the motivation and experiences of people listening to mental health related material in podcasts. Joining us today are Dr. Sharon Lambert and Naoise Ó Caoilte from University College Cork in Ireland, who have studied the motivations and experiences of mental health-related podcast listeners. Their recent paper is entitled "Podcasts as a Tool for Enhancing Mental Health Literacy: An Investigation of Mental Health-Related Podcasts," and it appears in the journal Mental Health & Prevention. In this interview, we discuss the importance of mental health literacy and ask if the need for honest mental health experiences is being met from the recording studio rather than the consulting room. *** Mad in America podcasts and reports are made possible, in part, by a grant from the Thomas Jobe Fund. Indian women wrestlers have been living on the streets of Delhi in protest after they accused their sport's federation's top official of sexual harassment and abuse. Nuala discusses the situation with Divya Arya, Women's Affairs Journalist at BBC Delhi. A new production of Rigoletto opens next week at Opera Holland Park. Described as “a propulsive tragedy of toxic masculinity and unfettered power”, the director, Cecilia Stinton, explains why she has set it in an Oxbridge-style college post World War I, and the relevance of the story to a modern audience. The soprano, Alison Langer, who plays the role of Gilda, also joins Nuala and performs live in the studio. The first episode of the new year starts as most disasters do, with a trip to Galway. I sit across from and beside Lachlann and Naoise, the other two members of Adore, and Ray, who walked into the kitchen of his own house at the wrong time. The gates of hell had already closed behind him and he had no choice but to grab a mic. After listing the personal ailments plaguing me at the moment, (including a right ear so full of wax its sore to turn my head, the peeling skin on the roof of my mouth thanks to a scalding sip of lava java and the bracing winds of Dublin relieving my jacket of its buttons and exposing me to more cold) the four of us head off on our merry way through flatulent forays on the Irish rail system and pop songs rendered through the prism of a culchie accent. In the segments we enjoy some Chubby Checker discourse, interesting revelations about the Blues Brothers and their involvement in the Falklands, and a mouthful becomes a lapful for Naoise in Garglebox.
