This week, Spectrum News NY1 hosted a congressional debate in New York's 13th District, which includes Harlem, Upper Manhattan and parts of the Bronx. The candidates are incumbent Rep. Adriano Espaillat and his much younger opponent, Darializa Avila Chevalier, who has been endorsed by Mayor Zohran Mamdani and the Democratic Socialists of America. NY1 investigative reporter Courtney Gross, political reporter Bobby Cuza and statehouse reporter Bernadette Hogan discuss the debate and what it indicates about the Democratic Socialists of America's growing presence in New York City politics. After that, the "Off Topic" team catches you up on the rest of this year's congressional contests. There are 38 legislative primaries on the ballot, and a handful of them are highly competitive. Consider this your voter guide as primary day approaches.
Sometimes the best conversations are the ones that don't stay on one topic. This week, we're having a good old-fashioned girl talk session. We talked about finding your voice and standing up for yourself, navigating relationships, getting older, setting boundaries, knowing what you're willing to do (and what you're absolutely not willing to do), and so much more.No agenda. No script. Just two best friends catching up, laughing, sharing stories, and having the kind of conversation that feels like you're sitting at the table with your favorite aunties. If you've ever needed a reminder.
How are we still building brand-new kitchens without a dedicated place for trash? In this episode, Eric shares one of the most common design misses he's noticed while touring new construction homes: the lack of a trash pullout or even a cabinet that could easily be adapted for one. It's a small detail that has a huge impact on how a kitchen functions every day. Then we shift into a marketing conversation for interior designers and kitchen & bath professionals. If you're struggling to create content, one of the easiest ways to demonstrate your expertise is by showing the problems you've solved. We discuss how to use past projects, design decisions, before-and-after examples, and planning challenges to create content that educates potential clients while highlighting your value as a designer. Finally, Eric shares his favorite new country music releases, artists, and songs that have been on repeat this week.Topics include:Why trash pullouts should be standard in kitchen designThe biggest function-first mistakes in new constructionCreating problem-and-solution content as a designerHow past projects can become your best marketing toolNew country music releases and weekly favoritesWhether you're a homeowner, designer, remodeler, or country music fan, there's something in this episode for you.
While New York is celebrating the Knicks' return to the finals for the first time in decades, controversy over canceled watch parties near Madison Square Garden has sparked a public feud. Knicks owner James Dolan criticized Mayor Zohran Mamdani and Police Commissioner Jessica Tisch on WFAN, saying they're party poopers and not real fans. NY1 investigative reporter Courtney Gross joins political reporters Bobby Cuza and Dan Rivoli to break down the battle between City Hall and Dolan. After that, NY1 hosted a fiery debate featuring five leading Democratic candidates in Manhattan's 12th Congressional District. With Election Day approaching, the "Off Topic" team looks at the winners, losers and key takeaways from the debate.
Does a designer with 100,000 followers automatically deserve more respect than a designer with 1,000? Not even close. This week on Off Topic, Eric dives into the growing obsession with follower counts and why social media numbers alone don't determine talent, experience, or success in the design industry. From homeowners searching for the right designer to creatives trying to build their brands online, Eric shares his thoughts on the balance between great design work and personal marketing. He also discusses why designers can't afford to stay hidden in today's digital world. While follower count doesn't define your abilities, showcasing your work and putting yourself out there is more important than ever.Plus, Eric breaks down the latest country music releases, shares his favorite songs of the week, and highlights what's been on repeat lately.

New York passed a constitutional amendment in 2014 that expressly prohibits drawing congressional maps "for the purpose of favoring or disfavoring incumbents or other particular candidates or political parties." More than a decade later, Democrats in Albany are switching course and throwing their hat in the nationwide redistricting battle. NY1 investigative reporter Courtney Gross and political reporters Bobby Cuza and Dan Rivoli discuss what gerrymandering New York's map could mean for the balance of power in Congress. Meanwhile, NY1 hosted two congressional debates this week with less than three weeks to go until Primary Day. Incumbent Rep. Dan Goldman squared off with former City Comptroller Brad Lander. In the open race to succeed retiring Rep. Nydia Velázquez, Brooklyn Borough President Antonio Reynoso, state Assembly member Claire Valdez and City Council member Julie Won went head-to-head on the debate stage. The "Off Topic" team breaks down the biggest moments, strongest performances and the issues driving voters to the polls.
You post. You disappear. Then you wonder why nobody engages with you. This week on Off Topic, we're getting into one of the most misunderstood parts of social media — and it has nothing to do with the algorithm. It's about being an active follower. Not fake engagement, not networking for clout, not commenting just to be seen. Actually showing up for people. Supporting others. Participating in the room. Because social media is called social media for a reason, and most people are treating it like a one-way street. We talk about why this matters especially if you're an independent designer, creative, or entrepreneur — where the online community you build can become just as real and just as important as the one you have in person. We get into what happens when you actually engage — the referrals, the collaborations, the friendships, the opportunities — and why the people who show up consistently for others are the people everyone remembers. There's a big difference between chasing attention and building community. Between becoming famous and becoming known. And some of the best things that have happened in my career didn't come from algorithms or follower counts. They came from relationships. This one's for anyone who's been lurking instead of engaging, posting without connecting, or wondering why their community feels quiet. Be the kind of follower you wish you had. Also this week in Country Music Weekly — I've been watching the opening of Megan Moroney's Cloud 9 Tour closely and there are some things about the production and stage design that I think say a lot about where country music concerts are headed. Plus Riley Green dropped a new song this week that I almost completely missed, why it sounds so familiar, what I think is a Toby Keith tribute hidden inside it, and why the meaning behind it runs deeper than most people are giving it credit for.New episodes every week. How does the proposal differ from the housing plans rolled out by previous mayors? NY1 investigative reporter Courtney Gross and political reporters Bobby Cuza and Kelly Mena break down the mayor's ambitious housing agenda. Then, sports take center stage as the New York Knicks chase their first championship in 53 years while the 2026 FIFA World Cup prepares to arrive in New Jersey. Meanwhile, Gov. Kathy Hochul, with support from Brooklyn Assemblyman Robert Carroll, is lobbying for another Winter Olympics in Lake Placid. This week, Mayor Mamdani unveiled his executive budget, turning a projected multibillion-dollar deficit into a balanced plan without major service cuts, a property tax hike, or tapping a rainy-day fund. The plan relies largely on help from Albany and a $2.3 billion pension plan restructuring that would push costs from 2032 to 2037, but it still requires approval from the state, retirement funds and unions. The city budget must also still be negotiated with the City Council. NY1 investigative reporter Courtney Gross, political reporter Bobby Cuza, and statehouse reporter Bernadette Hogan break down what's in, what's out, and how the mayor got it done. After that, the re-introduced Community Opportunity to Purchase Act, or COPA, would give some nonprofit groups the first chance to buy certain distressed multifamily buildings. Supporters, including Council member Sandy Nurse, say the proposal would help preserve affordability. Opponents say it may be illegal. The "Off Topic" team looks at the bill, which was vetoed by former Mayor Eric Adams and has now been revived despite fierce opposition from the real estate industry.
This week on Off Topic, we're talking about something that genuinely makes no sense to me… why are people so afraid to post their accomplishments online?People will post the vacation, the concert, the new car, the dinner, the sporting event… but the second it comes to sharing something they actually worked hard for professionally, suddenly it feels like “bragging.”In this episode, I'm diving into why social media today is basically your walking resume, why visibility creates opportunity, and why so many talented people are holding themselves back online, especially in business and creative industries. We're getting into social media, marketing yourself, engagement, professional visibility, and the mindset shift people need to make if they actually want to grow. Also in this episode, we get into this week in country music, what's been happening online, and my thoughts on the American Idol finale.

This week, Mayor Zohran Mamdani and City Council Speaker Julie Menin appeared to set aside their differences to advance a new budget solution: scaling back a lucrative tax credit used by wealthy business owners to help close the city's budget gap. The proposal, which targets what's known as the Pass-Through Entity Tax (PTET) credit, was swiftly rejected by Gov. Kathy Hochul. NY1 investigative reporter Courtney Gross, and political reporters Bobby Cuza and Kelly Mena break down how the tax credit works, who benefits most, and why the governor pushed back. Plus: Did Mayor Mamdani take a political hit? His endorsement of Lindsey Boylan fell short in a special election for a Manhattan City Council seat, raising questions about his influence. Meanwhile, the mayor waded into international controversy after appearing to pick a fight with the King over a disputed gem. The "Off Topic" team looks at Mamdani's busy week.

This week, Brooklyn City Council member Chi Ossé was arrested during a protest in Bedford-Stuyvesant aimed at stopping the eviction of a woman amid disputed allegations of deed theft. Video of the arrest quickly went viral, and Ossé has since raised concerns about his treatment by police during the incident. Mayor Zohran Mamdani described the footage as "concerning" and said he reached out to NYPD Commissioner Jessica Tisch in response. NY1 investigative reporter Courtney Gross, political reporter Bobby Cuza, and statehouse reporter Bernadette Hogan break down Ossé's arrest and the mayor's reaction. Also this week, Gov. Kathy Hochul discussed her proposal to overhaul New York's auto insurance system, arguing it will help lower costs for drivers. She emphasized she is not ready to make a final budget deal unless her proposed changes are included. The "Off Topic" team weighs in on what the plan could mean for New York drivers.
If your posts aren't performing the way they used to, it's probably not your content… it's that the rules have changed. In this episode, I'm breaking down what Instagram actually cares about right now and why so many designers feel stuck posting beautiful work that gets little to no traction. The algorithm isn't rewarding what it used to, and if you're still creating the same way you were even a year ago, you're going to feel it.We get into the five signals that are driving reach today, from why watch time has quietly become the most important metric, to why saves and shares are now far more powerful than likes. I also talk about how quickly your content is being tested after you hit publish, and why the first hour matters more than most people realize. But the biggest shift is this… content that feels human is outperforming content that feels perfect. And that's where a lot of designers are getting left behind. When you're only posting finished, polished spaces, you're missing the opportunity to create connection, hold attention, and actually give people a reason to stay. This episode is really about reframing how you think about content. Because Instagram isn't asking if your work looks good. It's asking if people care enough to watch, engage, and come back for more.If you've been feeling frustrated, inconsistent, or like your content just isn't landing… this will help you understand why, and more importantly, what to do differently moving forward.
The boys discuss their love for history and their least favorite subject + merch news and more !
If you've ever posted something you were proud of only to get barely any likes or comments, this episode will change how you see it.It's easy to assume your content is the problem, but that's not what's really happening. People aren't engaging less because your work is bad. They're engaging less because the way they consume content has completely changed. We're living in a world of fast scrolling, instant decisions, and constant dopamine hits. Most people are not carefully looking at posts anymore. They're deciding in less than a second whether to stop or keep moving. And in that environment, even great content can get ignored.

One hundred days is a big milestone for any new administration — and Friday marks Zohran Mamdani's 100th day as mayor of New York City. So how is it going for him so far? How much has he accomplished in that short time period? NY1 investigative reporter Courtney Gross, politics reporter Kelly Mena and statehouse reporter Bernadette Hogan break down the mayor's first few months in office. Looking ahead, meanwhile, Mamdani will likely face his steepest challenges in Albany when it comes to carrying out many of his campaign promises. The "Off Topic" team takes a look at what's on the horizon for the mayor.
