In "Havana Nocturne: How the Mob Owned Cuba and Then Lost It to the Revolution," Author T.J. English writes a nonfiction book that delves into the history of the Mob, organized crime in Cuba and the political history of the island which evolved in the 1950s. This discussion with the author took place on a 2008 episode of "Conversations On The Coast with Jim Foster" originating in San Francisco, California.
Jim and A.Ron break down a very “boardwalky” episode of Boardwalk Empire, “The Good Listener”. We talk about the Kennedy Family Empire, speculate on who Gillian is corresponding with, marvel at Stephen Graham’s performance as the coke/syphilis addled Capone, and ponder how Nucky’s childhood informs our understanding of Nucky the man. All this, plus your feedback, and a very special discussion about the State of Bald Move. Intro: How Many Times? by Bennie Krueger and His Orchestra
New York Times best selling author TJ English returned to Pundit Review Radio and WRKO last evening. His last book, Havana Nocturne: How the Mob Owned Cuba and Then Lost It to the Revolution was spectacular. His new book is just as good. The Savage City: Race, Murder, and a Generation on the Edge tells the story of race in NYC through the eyes and events of three very different men. One is a poor, semi-literate black teenager framed for a gruesome double murder, one is a crooked cop and the third is a founding member of the New York Black Panther Party. I was so glad to hear that TJ enjoys coming on the show and doing these longer style interviews that really dig into the book. It is such a thrill to get to devour these books and then have the opportunity to talk to the author in great detail about their work. I hope you enjoy this interview as much as I did, The Pundit Review Radio Podcast RSS feed can be found here. What is Pundit Review Radio? It was great to speak with T.J. English, author of Havana Nocturne: How the Mob Owned Cuba and Then Lost It to the Revolution. I started by asking T.J. what went into researching a book like this. We then got right into the incredible story of the mob in Havana. "[An] excellent new book.… [English] provides a detailed account of the personalities and elements that made up Cuban life. His well-researched descriptions of how business, gambling, politics, revolution, music and religion all played off each other give Havana Nocturne a broad context and a knowledgeable edge." -- Washington Post What is Pundit Review Radio?
