In the early 1960's, the U.S. Army developed a new way of moving troops into and out of strategic locations. It was called Air Cavalry and operated under the theory that moving forces by helicopter was faster and more precise than driving them or having them jump out of airplanes. One of the earliest and best known Air Cavalry engagements came in the Vietnam War at Landing Zone X-Ray during the Battle of Ia Drang in November 1965. Earnie Savage was part of Bravo company in the 1st Battalion, 7th Cavalry of the 1st Air Cavalry Division. Shortly after landing at X-Ray, his platoon was cut off and the two highest-ranking member of the platoon were killed. That suddenly left him in charge, surrounded by the enemy and trying to keep any other men from being killed.In this edition of Veterans Chronicles, Savage tells us about the platoon getting cut off, how he adjusted to being in command, his strategy for holding off the enemy for many hours until they could reconnect with other American forces, why he did not get very nervous in combat, and much more.Savage also tells us about going right back to the fight shortly after surviving this ordeal.

It's the 23rd January 1879, one of the most momentous days in South African history has passed, and the ripple effect will be felt across the world. For missionary Otto Witt it was a time of particular terror. He had fled his mission station, Rorke's Drift, and now it was smashed to bits, the house which had doubled up as a hospital burned to the ground, the main warehouse which had been his church, broken, bloody. Witt had fled the day before and sought out his wife and children who he'd sent on to Msinga once it became apparent the British were going to invade Zululand. Witt had lost his way up the Biggarsberg escarpment on the terrifying night of the 22nd January, and staggered into the Gordon Memorial Mission at Msinga the next morning - but his wife Elin and their 3 young children had already left. He didn't know this — merely that she wasn't there. Elin had been told by refugees streaming away from Isandlwana that Otto had been killed at Rorke's Drift. So both believed the other dead. The family spent five days believing they were widows and orphans. The confusion was only cleared up when Witt finally tracked Erin's wagon trail to Pietermaritzburg where the family was reunited, exhausted and traumatized, but physically unharmed. In Newcastle, Maud Bradstreet had just assisted her friend, Mrs. Hitchcock, in delivering a baby girl named Georgina. Their joy was short-lived, however, as news arrived that the Newcastle Mounted Rifles had been decimated at Isandlwana—both of their husbands were among the dead. The two women set out for the Orange Free State, a grueling week-long journey by horse and cart, surviving on very little including water strained through a mealie bag. This was the raw reality for the survivors - later in the episode we'll hear from the Zulu. On the morning of January 23rd, a messenger reached Helpmekaar with a brief note from Lieutenant Chard Rorke's Drift commander Defying the grim expectations of the men at the camp, they had miraculously held their ground through the night. Back at Isandlwana, Chelmsford had awoken his men and rode away from the scene of carnage before dawn, one of the men had found the mangled body of Lieutenant Colonel Pulleine, Isandlwana's commanding officer, then the column passed down Manzimyama Valley. They moved past homesteads that had been abandoned only a day prior, but now the inhabitants were creeping back. Through the doorway of a single hut, they saw an Inyanga tending to amaQungebeni warriors who had likely fought at Isandlwana. The tension snapped; soldiers of the Natal Native Contingent opened fire and killed a man before order could be restored. A seething anger swirled through the British column, Trooper Fred Jones, one of the survivors of the Newcastle Mounted Rifles was not in a forgiving mood. “We saw red…” he admitted “ Exhausted and broken, the warriors shuffled forward, dragging their shields in the dust. The uThulwana were stunned—they thought no British soldiers were left alive after Isandlwana. For a long, tense moment, the two forces stared at one another across a distance easily covered by a bullet. Yet, neither side pulled a trigger. It was, as historian Ian Knight notes, a surreal conclusion to an extraordinary 48 hours: two armies, both feeling the weight of defeat, watching each other move silently into the distance. King Cetshwayo kaMpande did not get an accurate version of events at Rorke's Drift at first. Back at oNdini, Dabulamanzi reported that he had stormed and successfully taken the house… attacked again then retired…but admitted that he had suffered heavily …” It was to take another ten days before the warriors returned to oNdini and had been ritually cleansed .. only then did Cetshwayo address them in his huge cattle kraal. “If you think you have finished with all the white men you are wrong, because they are still coming…” he warned.

Jacob Savage, author of the ultra-viral Compact essay "The Lost Generation," was digital media's man of the month in December. Meghan interviewed him on December 26 for a special episode for paying subscribers, and here it is now from behind the paywall. Jacob's argument in a nutshell, is this: Starting around 2014, the push to diversify hiring in elite institutions, particularly academia, journalism/book publishing and entertainment, hit millennial white men hardest. Despite talent, hardwork, and even privileged connections, many were denied professional opportunities solely because of identity. Many were left stuck, sidelined, or quietly drifting. Jacob describes his path after graduating from Princeton in 2006 and sampling a few different fields before trying to become a television writer in Hollywood. Spoiler: it didn't work out well. Was his mistake his insistence that, as he writes, "the world treat me fairly, when the world was loudly telling me it had no intention of doing so"? Or were the systemic forces that conspired against him part of a larger movement that will have negative downstream consequences for generations to come? Housing is going well. Remix winding down. Noob Raid started up again after its holiday break. A new addon, XFaction for cross guild communication is working well. The last days of Legion Remix are upon us. We are in the final 7 days, so get those last minute runs done now. There is still transmog gear to grind, pets, mounts, and exclusive legion remix only housing items to grab before they are gone. If you ever wanted those legion artifact appearances, this is it. SWTOR In SWTOR, we closed out 2025 with our Winter Nights celebration which was 4 evenings of guild activities including a tour of World Bosses where we took a piece of armor off after each successive fight, stronghold tours, dressing up in our Life Day finest, a clothing drive on the starter planets, a parade of Life Day mounts, and a cracking good trivia night. Great way to spend the last gaming week of 2025. On to 2026! Next week is Total Galactic War! Again! This time we are ready for it. Mostly. We will be maximizing conquest points this week by doing group activities, crafting, and class stories. GSF and pvp are also good ways to rack up the points, if you are so inclined. Keep an eye on discord for any last minute group stuff that may pop up. ESO Nothing new really. It's been quiet due to the holidays. FFXIV Just had a new patch and things are going well. New MSQ, Savage raid tier is open and the world first race is already over. New trial with a train, new Unreal trial with everyone's favorite lady to hate and feel sorry for, Tsukuyomi’s Pain. The cosmic crafter and gatherer area has new updates, and crafters have pink heart themed items to make new. Hildebrand has more story, and the Air Force One GATE has a new place to fly around and pew pew.. The Strategy Board is live, and everyone is clearly using it for helpful raid explanations and mechanics demonstrations. Totally. Free login campaign has started. Up to 96 hours from when you start it. Ends February 9th. STO KDF fleet has made some big strides with the fleet holdings. The Starbase will complete the Tier IV shipyard in just about a week. Which means after that we can start tossing resources in for a tier IV Starbase. Also the Research lab is closing in on Tier III. What all this means is more fleet ships will be accessible. And once the research lab hits Tier III, the purchasable trait slots will be available. Fleet Action Report has been doing playthroughs of the missions showcasing accolades and recruit special tasks, while letting you know what rewards could be handy for your ships or on ground.
