Kevin Csolak shares his journey from growing up in his mom's New Jersey dance studio to starring as Tulsa in the Broadway revival of Gypsy. Kevin also reflects on what it means to approach each show with intention and curiosity—even months into the run. He takes us behind the scenes of his whirlwind audition for Steven Spielberg's West Side Story, including the surreal moment of dancing in front of the director himself. Plus, he recalls the unexpected overlap between his commercial dance career and Broadway—like performing at the Super Bowl with Justin Timberlake just hours before starting Mean Girls rehearsals. Throughout, Kevin shares insight into how rejection can fuel reinvention, and why staying creatively sharp is non-negotiable. In this episode, we take a fascinating journey behind the scenes with Adam Brand, the fourth-generation owner of M&S Schmalberg Flowers, the last artificial flower factory of its kind in America. Since 1916, this family-owned business has been handcrafting exquisite fabric flowers that have adorned high fashion, Broadway, Hollywood, and some of the world's most well-known celebrities and designers. You've likely seen their work without realizing it—on Hamilton, Boardwalk Empire, The Radio City Rockettes, Bridgerton, The Gilded Age, and countless other productions. Their creations have been featured by fashion icons such as Oscar de la Renta, Ralph Lauren, and Calvin Klein, and have been worn by stars including Beyoncé, Scarlett Johansson, and Prince Harry and Meghan Markle.Adam shares the rich history of his family's business, from its early days to the challenges of keeping the craft alive in an ever-changing industry. He also tells the incredible story of his grandfather, Holocaust survivor Harold Brand, whose resilience, perseverance, and sheer determination shaped the company's legacy. You'll hear how Adam found his own path to becoming the next-generation “flower man,” the artistry behind their handcrafted creations, and the game-changing events that transformed M&S Schmalberg forever.Episode Highlights:(3:15) Adam introduces his company and shares its deep history, which began in 1916 with his great-great uncles.(5:59) The remarkable story of Adam's grandfather, Harold Brand—a Holocaust survivor, a man of strength and perseverance, and someone who even survived being shot in the neck during an employee dispute. His resilience and work ethic shaped the company and remain an inspiration today.(16:40) How did Adam become the next-generation “Flower Man”? He shares his deeply personal journey and the pivotal moment when everything changed for him. He also talks about longtime employee Miriam, who has watched generations of the family grow up and whose presence in the workshop brings both joy and nostalgia.(24:35) Ever wondered how these extraordinary flowers are made? Adam walks us through the intricate, all-handcrafted process—an art form that is as meticulous as it is beautiful.(35:42) How long does it take to create a custom flower? The answer depends on many factors. A rush order can be completed in 24 hours, but Adam explains why speed isn't always the best approach.(36:54) In the early 1900s, there were hundreds of artificial flower companies in New York City. Why is M&S Schmalberg the only one left standing? Adam attributes it to luck, magic, and an unbreakable work ethic. He also reminisces about the days when “the streets were alive” with manufacturers like his.(45:20) Adam shares stories of unique custom orders, including how their flowers made it onto Bridgerton.(49:55) Can you recognize a Schmalberg flower when you see one? Probably not—but Adam tells you where to look.(51:28) The phone call they received in 2016 that changed everything—plus a few other game-changing moments that have shaped the company's future.(55:30) What's next for Adam and M&S Schmalberg? What's his vision for the future?(57:10) Is there a question Adam wishes he had been asked? Not really—but he again extends an open invitation for anyone who wants to visit and experience the magic firsthand.(59:15) Want to connect with Adam? Send us a textEpisode 508 "The Penguin" Actor: Louis Cancelmi One of my favorite actors working today. He was terrific in #ThePenguin #KillersOfTheFlowerMoon and #TheIrishman not to mention #Billions and so much more. He is very much like John Carroll Lynch, low key, usually fuels and steals the show or the projects he's in. Terrific talent. Old school look.Louis Cancelmi. You can currently find Louis in "The Penguin" as Rex Calabrese. He has an amazing filmography highlighted by Killers of the Flower Moon and The Irishman. Louis and I cover serious ground about life, acting, his roles and more. Louis also played undercover agent Mike D'Angelo on "Boardwalk Empire" (HBO, 2010-14), Louis also enjoyed recurring roles on "Blue Bloods" (CBS, 2010-), "Billions" (Showtime, 2016-) and "The Looming Tower" (Hulu, 2018-). Born in Anchorage, AK, Cancelmi studied Theater at Yale College before making his screen debut in dark workplace comedy "New Guy" (2003). He went on to play Balkanin in pre-WW1 drama "Si Laraby" (2003) and guest on "Third Watch" (NBC, 1999-2005) but initially focused on the stage, performing in productions of "Death of a Salesman," "A View from the Bridge" and "Love Lies Bleeding." But he eventually returned to the film world when he appeared alongside actress sister Annie Parisse in indie "First Person Singular" (2009). Roles in family dramedy "Gabi on the Roof in July" (2010), romantic comedy "The Ride of Tom and Valkyrie" (2011), love triangle tale "Green" (2011) and LGBT movie "Gayby" (2012) then followed, as did a brief spot in "The Amazing Spider-Man 2" (2014). Cancelmi then appeared alongside his real-life wife Katherine Waterston and father-in-law Sam Waterston as a theatre director struggling with impending fatherhood in "Please Be Normal" (2014), and then again in his brother-in-law Graham's short film "And It Was Good" (2015). Cancelmi's profile grew considerably when he was cast as undercover agent Mike D'Angelo in Emmy-winning crime drama "Boardwalk Empire" (HBO, 2010-14). A year later he enjoyed a three-episode stint as serial killer Thomas Wilder on police procedural "Blue Bloods" (CBS, 2010-), played a thieving zoo worker on "Elementary" (CBS, 2012-) and added indie movies "Funny Bunny" (2015) and "Manhattan Romance" (2015) to his filmography. After showing up in Doug Liman's virtual reality drama "Invisible" (2016), Cancelmi played violent criminal Jimmy in NYC drama "Tramps" (2016), eco-criminal Owen in "The Blacklist" (NBC, 2013-) and successful trader Victor Mateo in three episodes of "Billions" (Showtime, 2016-). Cancelmi then landed supporting roles in art world satire "Fits and Starts" (2017) and comedy thriller "Green Olds" (2018), shared the screen with Robert De Niro and Al Pacino in hitman biopic "The Irishman" (2018). Welcome to Multiverse News, Your source for Information about all your favorite fictional universes. Last week, mere minutes after our Tuesday evening recording session, we were both delighted and disheartened when Marvel Studios dropped its “Look Ahead | Disney Plus'' trailer, which not only provided release dates, but showcased our first official look at footage, for a whopping 8 streaming projects. Here's what we learned: Box office juggernaut Deadpool & Wolverine will be available to stream on the platform beginning November 12, 2024. We already knew Daredevil: Born Again is set to begin streaming March 4, 2025, but the trailer, which was intercut with footage from the other shows, gave us our first look at the villain Muse, the return of Jon Bernthal's Punisher, as well as Bullseye, and perhaps most surprisingly the inclusion of Ms. Marvel's dad, Yusuf Khan What If Season 3 will begin streaming this December 22nd, with no word as to whether that will be a weekly or daily release, like last year. Your Friendly Neighborhood Spider-Man will begin airing January 29th, 2025 Riri William's Ironheart makes her return beginning June 24th, 2025 Eyes of Wakanda, the animated anthology series is set for an August 6th, 2025 debut Marvel Zombies will premiere sometime in October 2025, with the live action Wonder Man series starring Yahya Abdul Mateen II arriving later that December. In a final marketing push ahead of its December 3 premiere, Lucasfilm released final art, a poster, and a new trailer for Star Wars: Skeleton Crew. The series, which is helmed by Spider-Man filmmaker Jon Watts, is an Amblin Entertainment-inspired coming of age tale that follows four youths who embark on a swashbuckling adventure with unexpected revelations. The trailer is in keeping with what we've seen from the series thus far, which is to say it feels tonally divergent from anything we've seen in Star Wars before, including new species, planets, and a synth-pop heavy score. According to The Hollywood Reporter, Warner Bros is gearing up to bring the world of George R.R. Martin's Game of Thrones to the silver screen with at least one film in early development. And that's pretty much all we know – there's no creative talent attached yet, meaning no writer or director, much less any word regarding a potential time, setting, or characters that might be involved. Amazon MGM Studios is testing actors for the role of Lara Croft in Phoebe Waller-Bridge's upcoming Tomb Raider series. Sophie Turner and Lucy Boynton top Amazon's wish list, according to Deadline. Scary Movie creators Marlon, Shawn, and Keenen Ivory Wayans are reuniting after 18 years to develop a new film in the franchise for Paramount and Miramax. Kelly Macdonald, known for Boardwalk Empire and No Country for Old Men, has joined the cast of DC Studios' Lanterns. Amazon MGM Studios is developing a Jack Ryan film, continuing the series storyline with John Krasinski, Wendell Pierce, and Michael Kelly. Andrew Bernstein will direct. Early box office projections show Wicked opening at over $80 million domestically and Gladiator 2 at $65 million, both debuting on November 22. Universal Pictures and LEGO have partnered to develop three live-action LEGO films, directed by Jake Kasdan, Patty Jenkins, and Joe Cornish. Toho has officially greenlit a new Godzilla movie from the director of last year's Oscar-winning Godzilla Minus One. Amazon MGM Studios has acquired American Speed, starring Tom Holland and Austin Butler as the scandal-ridden Whittington Brothers, with Oscar-winning producer Charles Roven attached. Ridley Scott revealed to The Hollywood Reporter that he's working on a new Alien movie for 20th Century Studios, though it's unclear if it's connected to the Alien: Romulus follow-up or a standalone project. Tom Cruise is in early talks with Paramount for a Days of Thunder sequel, according to The Hollywood Reporter.
Send us a textEmmy Award-winning and Tony Award-nominated actor Bobby Cannavale called into promote the release of "Jumani: Welcome to The Jungle," out now on digital, and coming to DVD and Blu-Ray on March 20th. We also discussed Boardwalk Empire, how we're both members of the "old dad's club," and unfortunately ended on a down note with a chat about the Jets and the Bears. (From 3-12-18)
David Stenn has a good “day job,” writing scripts for television (like The L Word and Boardwalk Empire) but his passion is film history. He has funded restoration of films long thought lost or unavailable, including a recent “find” featuring Clara Bow. He is also the author of two definitive biographies, Clara Bow: Running Wild, first published in 1988 and Bombshell: The Life and Death of Jean Harlow. They are both “must-read” recommendations, along with his passion project, a documentary called Girl 27 that is now available free of charge on YouTube. In this week's episode of Bingeworthy, our TV and streaming podcast host Mike DeAngelo is putting out a hit on other shows to discuss “Tulsa King.” The Paramount+ series follows a former Mafia capo exiled to Tulsa, Oklahoma, where he builds a new criminal empire with a group of unlikely misfits. The crime dramedy series stars Sylvester Stallone, Andrea Savage, Martin Starr, Garrett Hedlund, Jay Will, Frank Grillo, and more. READ MORE: ‘The Old Man': Jeff Bridges & Amy Brenneman Discuss Their Spy Drama, ‘Tron: Ares', ‘Heat' & More [Bingeworthy Podcast] Joining Bingeworthy to discuss season two of the hit series is writer and showrunner, Terence Winter (“The Sopranos,” “Boardwalk Empire,” “The Wolf of Wall Street”). Winter took over the show early in season one's development for creator Taylor Sheridan (“Yellowstone,” “Wind River”), who was overrun by all things "Yellowstone" and its related projects. After season one rumors began spreading that Sheridan and Winter butted heads over the direction of the series, Winter quit the show, but was ultimately convinced to return for season two. During the interview, Winter cleared the air and explained the situation in his own words. --- Support this podcast: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/theplaylist/support

With Magic Hour relocating to an expanded downtown location on East Matilija Street, adjacent to Rainbow Bridge, it's a good time to repost this fan favorite from 2022: Zhena Muzyka is an acclaimed author "Life by the Cup," a social entrepreneur, teacher, executive coach, public speaker, and former publisher of Enliven Books, a new Mind-Body-Spirit imprint from Atria/Simon and Schuster. Most recently, she is the creator & chief formulator of Magic Hour Tea & Transformation (www.ClubMagicHour.com), based here in Ojai. Magic Hour was founded in Ojai, where, Zhena describes, "the sunset and sunrise create an electric pink Magic Hour, where the light illuminates the landscape and reminds us that through nature everything is possible." Zhena began hosting tea events on the back porch at Nutmeg's Ojai House more than 25 years ago. She founded Zhena's Gypsy Teas, which she sold after it became a national sensation. Her latest venture brings all of her expertise together as an entrepreneur, author, speaker and transformational leader. When she started her business, she was a single mother with $6 to her name and grew it into a multimillion-dollar company revolving around the idea of "fair trade," sourcing her teas from small, committed tea growers in Sri Lanka. Life by the Cup chronicled her experiences and is in development for a TV series by Mark Wahlberg's production company, creators of HBO shows Boardwalk Empire, Entourage, Ballers, and In Treatment. Besides the fascinating role of tea in purposeful living, we talk about living in Ojai, the changes we've seen in our decades here, the challenges of self-employment, her innovative and healthful herbal tea blends, and how life gets better when we slow down and share our time with our friends and family. We did not talk about the second Opium War, Australian rabbit-proof fences or the electoral college. You can learn more at ... zhena.tv clubmagichour.com

NOTE: This is an updated replay of my amazing chat with #1 New York Times bestselling author and screenwriter-producer Dennis Lehane. His latest novel, Small Mercies, was an instant NY Times Bestseller named an Amazon Editors' pick for Best Books 2023. Stephen King said of the book “Small Mercies is thought-provoking, engaging, enraging, and can't-put-it-down entertainment.” Enjoy! New York Times bestselling author and screenwriter-producer, Dennis Lehane, spoke to me about what he learned from Clint Eastwood, working on "Mr. Mercedes" with David E. Kelley, and his new Apple TV+ show "Black Bird." Dennis Lehane is the bestselling author of 13 novels including four adapted into films of the same name: 2003's Academy Award-winning film Mystic River, directed by Clint Eastwood; 2007's Gone Baby Gone; 2010's Shutter Island directed by Martin Scorsese, and 2016's Live by Night directed by Ben Affleck. His latest is the limited Apple TV+ series, Black Bird, described as a "...fascinating, ripped-from-the headlines story [and] true-crime drama..." based on the 2010 memoir by James Keene and Hillel Levin, “In With The Devil: A Fallen Hero, A Serial Killer, and A Dangerous Bargain for Redemption." "Jimmy Keene (Taron Egerton), cuts a deal with the FBI to enter maximum-security prison for the criminally insane and befriend a suspected serial killer, Larry Hall (Paul Walter Hauser)." Black Bird premieres globally with the first two episodes on Friday, July 8, followed by one new episode weekly every Friday. Humorist/writer Shalom Auslander's new memoir is a satirical look at all the ways a sense of "feh," which is Yiddish for "yuck," has made its way into his psyche and every aspect of his life. Auslander has written extensively over the years about growing up in a dysfunctional ultra-Orthodox Jewish family. His new memoir, aptly titled Feh, is about a journey to write a different story for himself. We'll also hear from Julianne Nicholson. Proud to call herself a character actor, she's appeared in dozens of films and TV series, from Ally McBeal and Boardwalk Empire to August: Osage County and Mare of Easttown, where she earned an Emmy. Nicholson is starring in the new film Janet Planet. And, Ken Tucker takes us back 50 years to Stevie Wonder's album Fulfillingness' First Finale, which he says is an underrated treasure.Learn more about sponsor message choices: podcastchoices.com/adchoicesNPR Privacy Policy

David Stenn was hired by the TV series Hill Street Blues immediately after graduating from Yale, becoming the show's youngest writer ever. David then wrote She Was Marked For Murder, an NBC movie that earned an Edgar nomination from the Mystery Writers Guild of America.David returned to television as Producer of 21 Jump Street, then Supervising Producer of Beverly Hills, 90210. David's first biography, Clara Bow: Runnin' Wild, which was published by Doubleday and edited by no less than Jacqueline Onassis, became a national bestseller. Variety raved, "Only rarely will you find a book that is as total a winner on every level as Clara Bow: Runnin' Wild." His second biography, “Bombshell: The Life and Death of Jean Harlow, again, edited by Jacqueline Onassis, was cited by the New York Times as one of the year's notable books.“It Happened One Night…At M-G-M,” David's discovery for Vanity Fair of Hollywood's best-suppressed scandal, brought vindication to rape survivor Patricia Douglas after sixty-six years in hiding and is now considered an historical progenitor of the MeToo movement. The story was adapted into Girl 27, a documentary film that David directed. I've read David's excellent book on Clara Bow and seen Girl 27. Both are powerful pieces about Hollywood's long history in how power players treat both celebrities and those who wish to become celebrated.David then served as Co-Executive Producer of The L Word and Supervising Producer on the HBO series Boardwalk Empire. His most recent screenplay assignments have been for Martin Scorsese; Leonardo DiCaprio/Warner Bros.; and Working Title.David is a passionate supporter of film preservation. He serves on the Film Committee of the Museum of Modern Art in New York and Board of Directors at the UCLA Film & Television Archive in Los Angeles.

Nick Roth comes from a filmmaking family and did a “blood oath” to not pursue that path, until he went with his father to China to make one wild crazy flick in 2013 called “Chronicles of the Ghostly Tribe”. The movie was a nightmare to shoot, but it jumpstarted Nick's interested and drove him to become a film professor at Cal State Northridge as an adjunct professor in cinema studies and eventually leading to his own film, “Hanky Panky,” a horror comedy about a man and his napkin friend saving the world from a dark evil in a cabin. If you're not doing so already, please like and follow Classic American Movies on Instagram and Facebook. In TODAY'S EPISODE OF 10,000 NOs Podcast , a solo riff, I talk about the social experiment known as The Metro Experiment, where world class violinist Joshua Bell was observed playing his $3.5 million dollar Stradivarius in disguise on a subway platform, wearing a hoody as commuters waited for their train. The results were astounding. And they shine a light on artists who have been devaluing themselves, or giving up, because gatekeepers (those who have the power to move said artists' careers forward) haven't recognized their talents... yet. I talk about past guest Terry Winter's crazy journey to the top of Hollywood, as well as Taylor Sheridan's meteoric rise in Hollywood, pointing out that had they listened to the gatekeepers early on in their careers, we wouldn't have such films and shows as The Wolf of Wall Street, Wind River, Boardwalk Empire, Yellowstone, Tulsa King and many, many more.
