American period crime drama television series
Opening or closing credits have become a key part of the cinematic or televisual experience. In just a few minutes, these mini masterpieces have to convey the essence of the film or TV show in terms of its vision, music, and characters, and they serve a legal requirement in listing its cast and crew. Joining Chris this week is Karin Fong, who tells the story of how she became title designer for an array of productions including Spider-Man: No Way Home, Cowboy Bebop, Boardwalk Empire, and many more. She delves into how titles fit into the production of a film, how she makes artistic choices, and reveals how credits have become a powerful marketing tool in the age of the internet.
Today on the Rarified Heir Podcast, we present an encore episode with Quincy Coleman, daughter of actor Dabney Coleman and actress Jean Hale. Ironically, this comes on the heels of our encore episode with James Coburn's son, James Coburn. Which means we have now spoken to the children of all-four leads from the film In Like Flint including Tony Cobb, son of Lee J. Cobb and Richard Duggan, son of Andrew Duggan. Weird. We spoke to Quincy about a variety of subjects from her dad's favorite Mexican restaurant, her own health issues, her singing career, her mom's criminally unheralded acting career, her parents acting classes in New York that featured many up-and-coming stars, her dads funny but intimidating on screen personality plus growing up in Los Angeles, attending the same college on the East Coast and much more. It was great talking to Quincy and we hope you will like our conversation with her because we sure did. Now if Josh only remembered that her dad was the Commodore and not the Commander on HBO's Boardwalk Empire that would have made this an ideal episode. Oh well. Take a listen to Quincy Coleman on this edition of the Rarified Heir Podcast.
In today's episode of Bingeworthy, our TV and streaming podcast hosts Mike DeAngelo, and Rodrigo Perez set their sights on the new mob dramedy from Paramount+, “Tulsa King.” The Sylvester Stallone-led show centers on Dwight “The General” Manfredi, a New York Mafia capo who just completed a 25-year prison sentence and is exiled by his bosses to start his own territory in Tulsa, Oklahoma. The series also stars Andrea Savage, Martin Starr, Jay Will, Garrett Hedlund, and Domenick Lombardozzi. Joining our co-host, Rodrigo Perez, to discuss the show is writer/showrunner Terence Winter, who made his name on other famous mobster shows like “The Sopranos” and “Boardwalk Empire,” also writing Martin Scorsese's "Vinyl" series and "The Wolf of Wall Street." The series is created by Taylor Sheridan (“Yellowstone”), who also wrote the pilot episode, but handed over the reins to Winter, who attested that he made the show his own with little outside input - even from Sheridan himself. Winter was super generous with his time and told us everything about the show, but two things stand out. One debunking a report earlier this summer that the show would tie in to "Yellowstone" and telling us just how much freedom he had from Sheridan who let him do what he wanted with the show after he had written the pilot. --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/theplaylist/message Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/theplaylist/support

How well do you remember high school? Chances are you are more likely to remember the big events that happened—prom, the homecoming dance where you spilled spiked fruit punch all over your crisp white shirt*, and graduation, but would you remember something as random as someone coming up to you and saying something off beat? Probably not, right? Well, my guest today not only remembered a random (and creepy) comment in crisp detail, it inspired her to craft a novel about it! *That totally didn't happen to me. “He knew how pain kept inside multiplies, and how pain shared subtracts,” writes podcast guest Jon Sternfeld in the opening bars of Michael K. Williams's haunting new posthumous memoir Scenes from My Life. Jon was midway through his work with the electrifying actor, known to television audiences for his career-defining turns as Omar Little in “The Wire” and Chalky White in “Boardwalk Empire,” as well as for his Emmy-nominated roles in “The Night Of” and “Lovecraft Country,” when Williams died in September 2021 from a drug overdose. It fell to Jon to complete the project on his own—an intimidating task the veteran ghostwriter was reluctant to take on at first. “I can't tell you how strange this is and has been,” he says. “When Mike first passed, I was just dealing with the shock and grief. I wasn't even thinking about things like deadlines or promotion. And now, I'm speaking about his legacy, and while I feel outmatched by the responsibility of it, I do accept it.” Join us as Jon Sternfeld reflects on his relationship with the late actor and activist, as well as on his other collaborations, including A Stone of Hope, with the noted residential care advocate Jim St. Germain; Crisis Point, with former U.S. senators Trent Lott and Tom Daschle; and the forthcoming Marked For Life, with attorney Isaac Wright Jr., who defends the wrongly accused in the same courtroom where he was sentenced to life in prison. The NC-17 Blonde has hit Netflix, and boy, are people fired up (“necrophiliac entertainment” wrote Manohla Dargis at NYT). At nearly three hours, the fictionalized version of Marilyn Monroe's life is tough to watch — unrelentingly bleak, a bit disjointed, with a camera that can be as vulturous as the vultures it critiques — but damn if that movie didn't haunt us both, and Ana de Armas gives an incandescent performance that has both of us thinking of cutting and bleaching our hair (which Sarah promised to do if we get enough paid subscribers). We talk about the fame trap, whether the film is “anti-abortion,” and if Hollywood will ever stop feeding on Marilyn's corpse. The fame trap came for Anthony Bourdain, the restless wanderer and beloved chef who gets the unauthorized biography treatment later this month with Down and Out in Paradise. How did the man generally regarded as having the best job in the world end up taking his own life? Can a book sourced only by the people left behind by “the Tony train” possibly give a full account? We talk addiction, how journalism can turn ghoulish, and the very complicated figure of Asia Argento.A kiss on the hand may be quite continental, but don't you think it's better to become a free or paid subscriber?Episode Notes:Friday Night Lights on Hulu and Bloodline on NetflixGratuitous photos of Kyle Chandler and Taylor Kitsch (Ed: What is this, Tiger Beat? Stay tuned after the play for a high spirited conversation with the cast, director, and Playing on Air founder and consulting director Claudia Catania. Dennis Lehane grew up in a storytelling, bar culture. For him, storytelling was in his blood. Family would gather every week, telling stories of the Old Country. “I think I just grew up in the thrall of that,” he told me. “I wrote my first novel when I was 15.” As an author, Dennis is known for Mystic River, Shutter Island, and The Drop, all novels that have been turned into films. In addition to novels, he's written for The Wire, Boardwalk Empire, Mr. Mercedes, The Outsider, and most recently, Apple's Black Bird. In this interview, the author-screenwriter talks about being exposed to violence, what it means to be ceased by an idea, why he outlined Shutter Island but none of his other novels, his friendships with Stephen King and David Simon, and why good television can actually be trickier to write than novels. Tony-nominee Jared Grimes joins The Art of Kindness with Robert Peterpaul to discuss Funny Girl on Broadway, acts of kindness from Beanie Feldstein, why he loves auditioning and more. Jared Grimes is a quadruple threat, making his mark on the entertainment world with singing, dancing, acting and choreographing. Though he is now a bonafide Broadway star, Grimes started out tap dancing on the New York City subways at the age of 16. As fate would have it, years later he wound up getting paid for that passion, choreographing at theaters around the nation and notably being cast as a dancer for icons like Mariah Carey, Salt-n-Pepa and even at Barack Obama's illustrious Kennedy Center Honors. Jared's got to flex his acting chops over the years as well, getting recognized on a wider scale for his television roles on Netflix's hit series Manifest and HBO's Boardwalk Empire and in films like Paramount's The Marc Pease Experience starring Ben Stiller. Of course, he never strays too far from the lights of Broadway. Jared's glowing stage career includes After Midnight which is performed and choreographed in, A Soldier's Play and, most recently, Funny Girl where he plays Fanny Brice's upbeat dancer friend Eddie Ryan. The television industry is changing, and with it, the small screen's potential to engage in debate and present valuable representations of American history. Founded in 1972, HBO has been at the forefront of these changes, leading the way for many network, cable, and streaming services into the "post-network" era. Despite this, most scholarship has been dedicated to analyzing historical feature films and documentary films, leaving TV and the long-form drama hungry for coverage. In History by HBO: Televising the American Past (UP of Kentucky, 2022), Rebecca Weeks fills the gap in this area of media studies and defends the historiographic power of long-form dramas. Dr. Weeks is a lecturer in the Bachelor of Art and Design Programme at Media Design School in Auckland, New Zealand. By focusing on this change and its effects, History by HBO outlines how history is crafted on television and the diverse forms it can take. Weeks examines the capabilities of the long-form serial for engaging with historical stories, insisting that the shift away from the network model and toward narrowcasting has enabled challenging histories to thrive in home settings. As an examination of HBO's unique structure for producing quality historical dramas, Weeks provides four case studies of HBO series set during different periods of United States history: Band of Brothers (2001), Deadwood (2004–2007), Boardwalk Empire (2012–2014), and Treme (2010–2013). In each case, HBO's lack of advertiser influence, commitment to creative freedom, and generous budgets continue to draw and retain talent who want to tell historical stories. Balancing historical and film theories in her assessment of the roles of mise-en–scène, characterization, narrative complexity, and sound in the production of effective historical dramas, Weeks' evaluation acts as an ode to the most recent Golden Age of TV, as well as a critical look at the relationship between entertainment media and collective memory. Thank you for joining us for Don't Know Her?. To mark the upcoming Emmy awards, we're doing a miniseries on performers who have garnered a lot of attention for their TV roles yet somehow feel underappreciated when it comes to their big screen work. And we are kicking this off with the marvellous Jeffrey Wright. In the world of TV, Jeffrey is perhaps best known for his Emmy Winning turn in Mike Nichols' Angels In America (2003), an adaptation of Tony Kushner's celebrated stage play. Television actors and actresses have transitioned to film roles quite successfully at times. One way to start is to do independent cinema. And to be noticed, sometimes it is best to be daring and courageous in the roles you choose. Dianna Agron, after her run on the TV series GLEE, got notice for her role in BARE (2015). The role was a co-starring performance alongside BOARDWALK EMPIRE actress, Paz de la Huerta. Sarah (Dianna Agron) is a young girl living in a small town in Nevada. She feels ennui as she spends time with her longtime boyfriend, her high school friends, and working her boring job. When she visits the closed business of her father (who died some years ago), she finds Pepper, a worldly and free-spirited woman, that had broken in to crash on the couch. Soon the two begin a friendship that will change Sarah forever. The film was written and directed by Natalia Leite (M.F.A. (2017)) and played numerous festivals including Tribeca among others. The film got buzz more so for the first-time nudity from Dianna Agron but also got notice from the arthouse crowd too. Your co-hosts take a look at this movie during our June Pride month and give their thoughts.
