In this episode of Oh! What a Lovely Podcast, Angus, Chris, Jessica, and returning guest Ann-Marie Einhaus discuss War-Time in Our Street by J. E. Buckrose. Set in a fictional Yorkshire village, these stories capture everyday resilience, humour, and quiet courage — from blackout chapel services and food shortages to romances and small acts of kindness amid wartime hardships. Buckrose, the pen name of Annie Edith Jameson, was a prolific writer who produced more than forty novels exploring domestic life and family tensions with gentle humour. War-Time in Our Street offers a fascinating glimpse of how ordinary people became part of the wider war effort. We continue HAHAugust 2: Double Take with an extremely underseen gem from the New World catalog, the Los Angeles set surf dramedy UNDER THE BOARDWALK, directed by Fritz Kiersch (CHILDREN OF THE CORN, TUFF TURF). Originally set to be released in 1988, New World eventually put this out at the same time as HEATHERS, the final two theatrical releases for the company. Featuring the endless struggle between the coastal "locs" (or "lawks" as Letterboxd might have you believe) and the San Fernando Valley "Vals," the film concerns two star-crossed lovers caught between the two worlds just as the two sides meet in a local surf competition (or "compo" if you're cool). How does Allie (Danielle van Zerneck, LA BAMBA) deal with her feelings for Nick (Richard Joseph Paul, OBLIVION)? Well, not by looking after her cousin Andy (Keith Coogan, ADVENTURES IN BABYSITTING), that's for sure! Helping us discuss this Shakespearean tale is our good friend and New World superfan Justin Grams, who has been with this film from the very beginning! Listen as we go through the film's history, share our thoughts on a potential sequel, have a discussion of the slang term "whease," and a whole lot more as we give this film the attention it deserves! Special thanks to Fritz Kiersch, writer/producer Matthew Irmas, and producer Greg Blackwell for their assistance with this episode! The next entry to the Local Selection Mix Series welcomes Kildare-based DJ and producer Cian Fox. For this installment, Cian provides us with an hour of no nonsense techno. Ranging right across the spectrum from stripped back to driving cuts within the genre. Cian Fox has begun to spark attention among the local and international dance scenes in recent years, with the 20 year old earning a slot on the acclaimed live-streaming platform Pattern Berlin, while garnering support slots for Dylan Fogarty, Jon10 and Puzzy Wrangler within a relatively short period. This success has led him to play for some exciting local parties such as The Shed Residents, Crush and Oblivion. These opportunities without a doubt, are linked to Cian's fine discography that he has built. Releasing multiple EPs on his SoundCloud, along with releases on Blurr, Fast Dogs and U-Traxx, has allowed him to express his vision for techno, while connecting with like-minded listeners. In particular, he has received notable support from Reformist and Remco Beekwilder, who has given his productions the seal of approval from playing at various gigs and radio shows. This mix further outlines his idea of techno, one that is rooted in the past that also takes aim at the future. Elegantly curated and mixed, this is an exceptional recording for any avid techno connoisseur. Even more so for an artist who is at the beginning of what could very well be a long and exciting journey in dance music. The coterie's captive, Torino, answered the call from the Genovese boss. They learned the mafia's farm was expecting a bus to return, so the coterie decided to find it and use it themselves to ambush the compound. While they planned, Genovese called again to demand the reason for the delay, and Torino panicked and claimed they had found gold on the property and were loading it onto the bus. How will the coterie deal with a large group of armed mafiosos now planning to greet them at the gate? Gio shared a story about a 76-year-old man with cognitive impairment who died after falling in a parking lot, attempting to meet a chatbot in New Brunswick. C-Lo provided sports updates, including the Mets beating the Mariners (Lindor on a 6-game hitting streak) and the Yankees sweeping the Cardinals. The hour concluded with a discussion about avoiding pickleball due to injury concerns and Jerry's refusal of a massage at Pebble Beach.
Welcome to another season of our connected culture, this one focused on unmasking the past to imagine better futures. Join us in the coming days and weeks to explore how we can learn from hard human history while growing the community we need to grow a kinder world together. We are kicking off this season with audio from “Imagining a Better American Future: From Abolition to Science Fiction, and beyond,” an event we hosted with Rockbridge Regional Libraries on March 13, 2025 that featured many of our Spring fellows. That fellowship cohort included author Paul Park – who listeners may remember from our first season as a peer and close friend of the late Terry Bisson – who helped us with the future and fiction-focused elements of the conversation. Plus, the fellows were also joined by local black history scholar Dr. Nneka Dennie – an expert on abolitionist Mary Ann Shadd Cary, a key figure in the MidMountain produced folk opera “Save from Oblivion” that we'll discuss more at length later in this season. Also, speaking of community: if you're listening to this as it's being released you can join us in person for our MidMountain Masquerade on October 25 from 2pm through 10pm! There'll be opportunities to make your own masks and marionettes, a harvest potluck to share meals, a masquerade with costume contest, live music, and more. Find out more at midmountain.org/masquerade. As a reminder, Our Connected Culture is a production of MidMountain, a 501(c)3 nonprofit, arts collective, and agricultural project operating out of MidMountain Retreat, a five acre riverfront arts space in the Blue Ridge Mountains near Natural Bridge, Virginia. You can check our community calendar for upcoming events or other opportunities to visit, like residencies where we offer discounted stays for folks who want to work on creative projects. Plus, MidMountain Retreat is also available for rent out on Airbnb and VRBO for non-art stays!

We are again returning to Rockbridge Regional Libraries, which joined us in hosting a screening of documentary the indelible Appalachians and a virtual conversion with filmmaker Frederick Murphy. The film explores the history, present, and future of Black identity in Appalachia – and we're sharing our conversation with Murphy where we explore both the content of the film and his experience as a creative documenting difficult history related to slavery in the American South. The coterie gave chase to their fleeing enemies. Val's beast drained one and fully satisfied her hunger before she took another one captive, Martha subdued one by clouding his memory, and Everett captured a third. After Everett eliminated one to scare the others, Val interrogated a very cooperative prisoner who revealed that the mafia's farm was a front, they had been sent to take out Collins Farm, and the boss was about to call to confirm the job was done. Can the coterie deceive the Genovese boss? Featuring our Storyteller Ryan LaPlante (@theryanlaplante) alongside Tyler Hewitt (@Tyler_Hewitt), Del Borovic (@deltastic), and Pam Sparrow. Was ist da schiefgelaufen? Und wie sollte das perfekte Remake oder Remaster eigentlich aussehen? Braucht es sie überhaupt? All diese und noch viele weitere Sehenswürdigkeiten betrachten wir auf unserer Wanderung vom Oblivion-Parkplatz aus. It's our final entry in our 'That's a comic book movie?!?' series! And we're taking a look at an entry that's barely an entry, 2013's Oblivion. This is the first pairing of Tom Cruise and Joseph Kosinski who'd later reteam in the much more successful Top Gun: Maverick in 2022. Set in the apocalyptic future of 2077, there's a big triangle in the sky telling Tom Cruise what to do which you'd think would be fine but it might be bad actually. Here are the 3 Big things you need to know this hour— Number One— The investigation into a shooting at Fort Stewart yesterday is ongoing—the suspect is in custody and the 5 victims are expected to survive—details on the way— Number Two— The ex-CIA Democrat running for Governor in Virginia—has been taking money—lots of it, it seems from a company with direct ties to the CCP—seems she of all people should have known that— Number Three— The Democrats continue to slide into oblivion—I mean right now if the election were held—as we heard from Mark Mitchell—the Democrats would take back control of the house—BUT—and this is a very big BUT—they seem to want that to get torched by going all in on socialism and communism—
Alex Krainer doesn't believe the EU's march into economic and cultural destruction is a controlled demolition or part of some grand plan to control the population, he thinks the leadership in Europe is just incompetent beyond measure and their ignorance and arrogance will completely destroy the bloc as its citizens are sacrificed on the altar of vanity. After some initial investigation, Everett and Val got the impression that Nikgen Farms was merely a mortal operation, but Martha and Troy ran back, alerting them to armed assailants approaching from the corn. The enemies refused Everett's call to stand down and the sheriff gave the order to subdue them. What do we lose when every moment is recorded, every action scrutinized, and every past mistake preserved? Philosopher and author Lowry Pressly joins EconTalk's Russ Roberts to discuss why privacy isn't just about secrets or information control, the necessity of spontaneity, the importance of moral growth, and what we need to become fully human. From photography to forgetting, surveillance to selfhood, this episode challenges our assumptions about what it means to be seen--and unseen--in a data-driven world.

Idaho Four murders didn't just expose the evil of Bryan Kohberger—they revealed the sickness festering in the true crime community. From the moment news broke, self-proclaimed sleuths and content creators swarmed like vultures, exploiting the deaths of four students and dragging survivors Dylan and Bethany through hell. These people weren't seeking justice—they were chasing clout, spinning conspiracy theories, vilifying traumatized witnesses, and accusing grieving families of lies. They cloaked their cruelty in faux concern and turned unspeakable tragedy into profitable spectacle, smearing the names of the dead and hounding the living for clicks and engagement. In doing so, they inflicted a second wave of trauma on those already devastated by loss, proving that some of the worst wounds are carved not by knives, but by the internet's insatiable thirst for drama. And then there's Kohberger himself—a hollow, attention-starved coward who slaughtered vibrant young lives to feel significant. He wasn't a genius or an enigma—he was a bitter failure who targeted joy because he couldn't stand its reflection. He thought murder would make him matter, but all it earned him was a concrete tomb and eternal contempt. He will live out his days in silence, stripped of control, stripped of myth, remembered only as a disgrace. Meanwhile, the victims live on—beloved, mourned, eternal.to contact me:bobbycapucci@protonmail.com

Microsoft ended the sale of Movies and TV shows via the Xbox platform this week, which for a company that put a lot into multimedia at one time came as quite a surprise. We talk about why Microsoft pulled back from these sales, and if other gaming companies involved might follow suit. Also, what's up with the large entertainment companies that can't seem to work with better with the different sub companies? Could gamers be getting more value? We discuss this and much more on another week of the longest running video game podcast, Orange Lounge Radio! The least-well-known title we'll be covering in this month of mirth-filled movies is Tom Di Cillo's sharp satire about the stresses of independent filmmaking. But those who aren't aware of it should know that Living In Oblivion will bust some guts. Steve Buscemi and Catherine Keener are terrific in the lead roles as the director and his temperamental star, but James Le Gros hilariously steals the show, essentially playing Brad Pitt. As we analyzed this story filled with compromises and dream sequences, we were able to talk about our own backgrounds in the media. So slip your screenplay to the star who's slumming on your set while others fantasize about slinging crappy burgers at a dive diner (and eating them) as the 677th edition of Have You Ever Seen spends time Living In Oblivion. This week's sci-fi picks come from friend of the pod and frequent cohost Tim, who sent us straight into Cruise chaos with War of the Worlds and Oblivion. We dive into Spielberg's intense alien invasion vision, Dakota Fanning's elite scream acting, and the many ways Tom Cruise sprints through disaster. Then we shift to the sleek, lonely world of Oblivion, where Cruise plays a clone technician with memory issues, drone problems, and a suspiciously perfect life. Are these movies smarter than they seem? Do the twists hold up? And as always, are they better stoned? Tim insisted. We watched. Let's talk.Give us a follow on Instagram and TikTok: @high.expectations.pod on both platformsReach out with comments or suggestions at podcast.highexpectations@gmail.comMusic courtesy of Vince Sasso of the Vince Sasso Trio(check them out on Instagram! @vincesassotrio)

Chilling Tales for Dark Nights: A Horror Anthology and Scary Stories Series Podcast
In this emotionally charged episode of Chilling Tales for Dark Nights, host Steve Taylor invites you to confront the most terrifying vanishing act of all—the erasure of self. Tonight's story doesn't lurk in the shadows or drip with blood. It aches. It lingers. It asks: What if the price of healing is everything that made you who you are? Crafted by CTFDN founder Craig Groshek and brought chillingly to life by Otis Jiry and a powerhouse cast, this episode will stay with you long after the final word. Memory. Identity. Love. Loss. This time, the darkness doesn't chase you. It slowly unravels you. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit podcastchoices.com/adchoices
The next sequel we'll be discussing is Transylmania. For it, I chatted with actress Musetta Vander, whose other sequels we've already covered — Oblivion 2 and Mortal Kombat: Annihilation.Musetta shared her unique journey from South Africa to Hollywood, which began with her early work as a dancer in music videos, including one for Tina Turner. From there, she went on to appear in Murder, She Wrote, and continued booking multiple projects every year. She had some great stories about growing up in South Africa, filming Oblivion, working on Wild Wild West, meeting Mike Ditka, and so much more.
Mitzi & I sit down to discuss her recent trip to the hospital, playing the new Oblivion Remaster, crazy news, & more
Narrator Wen Ross joins us to share an excerpt from Manhandled by Cari Quinn & Taryn Elliott, book 2 in their steamy Hammered rockstar romance series. Faith “Keys” Keystone is the lone woman in her band, surrounded by protective bandmates, a meddling manager, and now, thanks to one small incident, a broody, growly bodyguard named Quinn Alexander. He's infuriating, overbearing, and maddeningly hot. She hates him. Or at least she's trying to… Set in the Oblivion universe, this story brings the heat, the heart, and the backstage chaos you've been craving.
