As a journalist working for the anti-corruption website Tiger Eye Private Investigations, Ahmed Divela helped expose a multi-million dollar corruption scandal in the national soccer association of Ghana. The exposé led to resignations and criminal proceedings, and it implicated a powerful Ghanaian politician named Kennedy Agyapong. Agyapong denounced the team at Tiger Eye as "troublemakers" and indicated that he wished his supporters to attack or kill Divela. A few months later, the journalist lay dead, gunned down on a street in Accra. To find out more about the people and music featured in today’s episode, visit the Assassinations Podcast website. In 1954, Nurse Catherine Cooper (64) lived and worked in Limerick city as a home sister, visiting the ill and infirm at their bedsides. She was originally from County Clare, but had spent much of her working life in London, until the outbreak of World War Two. On the night of November 19th, 1954, she decided to walk back to her hospital from her last home visit. On the Dublin Road, she was spotted by a 24 year old carman, Michael Manning, who had been drinking all day. He attacked her, and she was killed on the roadside. But was Manning legally responsible for her death? Hollywood is famous for it's outlandish, over-the-top scripts. This week's episode of Nordic True Crime resembles one of those scripts. Neo-Nazis, a famous playwright, car chases, arson, war crimes and murder - this case has it all. “As you read this sentence, a social worker somewhere is making a decision that will protect a child. As we look back across history, it is clear that the effort to protect children is not a story of failure, but a story of progress and hope. The child protection system is far from perfect, and much remains to be done, but, at the same time, much has been accomplished. “ (John B. Myers, A Short History of Child Protection in America) This episode is more research, less true crime, but it's something listeners have been asking for! The law is not going solve child abuse, but we have very few ways as a society to respond vigorously to abuse, and legal endeavors seem to be a logical effort. When we speak of legal changes, there are a few different main ideas. First, we’ll talk about the shift in penal codes, in which child abuse became a felony in many states. Second, we’ll discuss the revisions to CAPTA (Child Abuse and Prevention T Act) in 1977, third, we’ll cover the reassertion of juvenile courts over social services, and with that we’ll feature one of the most important changes (in my opinion) of children having court-appointed advocates.
